Unable to activate System File Protection in purchased MalwareBytes

Q: Unable to activate System File Protection in purchased MalwareBytes

I bought MalwareBytes because I had been using the free version for so long and swore by it. But now I can't enable System File Protection. I've been going back and forth with their Tech Support department and so far there is no resolution. They had me run various software (like mbam-check- and ComboFix), as well as do virus scans outside of Windows, but still the 2 checkboxes just will not be enabled. Does anyone have any idea about why this might be happening?

Preferred Solution: Unable to activate System File Protection in purchased MalwareBytes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know if this was an issue before installing SP1, but afterward I happened to notice it. I went to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > System Properties > System Protection. The list of available drives looked like this:

(F: ) Iomega HDD
(C: ) OS (System)
OS (C: ) (Missing)

The "missing" item is a little odd, but I then did the following:
Clicked (C: ) OS (System)
Clicked the Configure... button where it says "Configure restore settings, manage disk space, and delete restore points"
Chose "Restore system setting and previous versions of files"
Moved the "Max Usage" slider to 12%
Clicked Apply
And this error popped up:

There was an unexpected error in the property page:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Please close the property page and try again.

I rebooted and tried again, with the same result.

Any idea what's going on?

I have a Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate trial which is about to run out. I have been receiving all the Windows updates as per normal so its a fully functional version of Windows. I have now purchased the official Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate dvd from a computer supplier, but to save cash I have purchased the OEM version. My questions is simply whether I will be able to use this OEM product key to activate my windows 7 trial as both are 64 bit Ultimate. The version currently running is a vanilla Win 7 64 bit trial, not an OEM version. This is urgent as I have 4 days left of my trial and I am concerned if I open the packaging of the OEM DVD and it does not work then I will not be able to return it as the packaging will be opened. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

A:Activate Windows 7 Trial with purchased OEM Product Key

if there was another operating system on the computer before you installed the ultimate trial then you are not eligible for oem. win7 oem is only for a newly built computer that never had an operating system installed.

Few days ago my computer got infected with av.exe malware. I ran malwarebytes (free version) it did detect the malware and said that it fixed the av.exe issue but the problem was still there. Subsequent runs of malwarebytes did not detect any problem even though the annoying popup for av.exe was still coming. I reran malwarebytes today which didnt detect anything but now I dont get any pop up for av.exe (also i dont see av.exe in my task manager anymore) but a new problem is occurring. Whenever I try to run any exe file it complains that " Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file." I am unsure if the malware created this new problem or the anti malware created it.

Pls help I need my laptop cleaned urgently

Do you still require help for this issue? If so, try to do this

lease do this:

Save both reports to your desktop.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Rename it to a .com extension. You may need to ensure file extensions are viewable.

* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.
Double click the renamed .com file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked Sections

Help!. How do I get round this to run Malwarebytes please.

A:system tool and unable to run malwarebytes

Some types of malware will target Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other security tools to keep them from running properly. If that's the case, please refer to the suggestions provided in For those having trouble running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for using RKill by Grinler or downloading a renamed version of mbam.exe. Important: Do not reboot your computer until after performing a scan with Malwarebyes'. A scan must be completed immediately after running RKill..Note: You may have to make repeated attempts to use Rkill several times before it will run as some malware variants try to block it. -- If you get an alert that RKill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software which attempts to terminate tools that try to remove it. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen and then run RKill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself so that RKill can perform its routine.-- Some security tools may flag RKill as malware when renamed to iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe, etc because they have definitions in place that flag reserved file names used outside their normal path. If you encounter such an alert when running Rkill, you can safely ignore it and continue to allow the program to run.

I posted another thread in this forum about my website being repeatedly hacked. I also mentioned that I couldn't run a scan with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, because the program would close just a few seconds after starting a scan.

The first reply to that thread was from a user suggesting that this might be a sign that my machine might be infected, and that I should run a scan with HijackThis! and post the log here. I decided to do what he/she recommended, so here it is:

Hi, My cat has given birth to 4 beautiful kittens. Woo-Hoo.

Obviously i have taken photos of the cute little critters and transfered them to a folder on my pc.

I used G6 Utilities to rename and enumerate all the pictures. When i look in the folder now there are several pictures missing. Fortunately i have found them. Unfortunately i found them by showing Protected Operating System files.

After googling for a while i have only managed to find out how to disable the File System Protection for all of Windows. Before i attempt this i would like to know if it will allow me to recover the pictures or if it is just better to delete them and take new ones.

Or does anyone know of another way to remove this protection? Any software that may help?

Thanks in advance.

So just yesterday, a strange computer protection application called "Privacy Center" found its way onto my Windows Vista system. It informed me, like a normal computer protection system would, that I had numerous cookie, viral and spiral infiltration into my system due possibly from visits to adult, explicit sites. I had visited no such sites.

It continued to hassle me from my sidebar, constantly telling me I had this dangerous situation on my computer. I finally accessed the system, and it looked fairly legitimate. It scanned my computer and than told me it could clean my system only if I updated my licenses for their protection on the internet. It would cost a significant amount of money to renew these license. I had never bought these "licenses" in the first place.

By now I was suspicious of the legitimacy of this protection (I know, took me long enough) and decided I would quit the program and deal with it later. When I tried to "x" out of it, a window popped up saying that it would be dangerous to not fix this now. Than a weird female voice came though my speakers and in a strange possibly Russian accent, told me that my system was under threat and that I needed to fix it right away.

Again I was rather alarmed and decided to check my own fire wall and system protection, but it found nothing on the system that was wrong. I found that my system, my internet, everything was working as normal, so I continued what I was doing. The "Privac... Read more

For the last week I've been in the midst of a gruesome malware infection that I had been trying to rid from my mom's computer.

I sought help as it was outside of my level of knowledge with dealing with viruses and other sorts of trouble, and thus arrived here.

In the process of cleaning this system I was advised that the computer has problems with its windows file protection system. I had a problem with my system file rundll32.exe. It was deleted by ComboFix in the malware removal process; that issue was fixed but I guess the system was not working as it should to replace the loss of a file or something?

I'm not too sure. BTW Is this a severe issue? Where can I get to/go to in Windows to see more about this feature?

Less than a month ago I build a new rig, installed Windows 7 on my SSD and at a later time I attached my old 1TB large disk with still had XP installed on it.

Windows is protecting this drive, all folders are flagged read only and I'm unable to remove the read only flag, each time I try, and check back after processing a job to un flag it, there still there.

I'm able to delete files and folders after accepting the UAC popup, however, there are several folders I want to remove but am unable to, /Boot, /Documents & Settings, /Windows and some root system files, but windows doesn't let me.
(I need to run programs with elevated rights in order to be able to modify those files)

The /Boot is from an older Windows 7 install and it should be safe removing it, because I installed windows 7 on a SSD with out any other disks attached, so no dual boot stuff.

But worst of all, many files are also flagged read only, along with my project files that I'm now unable to modify.
What buttons do I need to press to get windows to understand he should not be protecting this disk and there ain't no windows installed on it so I can clean up get rid of those read only flags on the files

Please help if anyone can, and I'll owe you one. This isn't the first time I've made progress with tweaking Windows, only for functionality to give out.. having to restore to previous working builds as latest started suffering firewall over-protection issues, but that's another story..

These are the instructions I found googling my problem:

1. Type services.msc, and then press Enter.
2. In the list of services locate Software Licensing
3. Right-click it, select Properties
4. Change ?Startup type:? to Automatic, then click OK
5. You may then need to select Software Licensing again then click ?Restart the service?
(from Windows Activation Error, Error Code 0x80070426? - Microsoft Community)

My problem is I can't start the Software Protection. A few minutes later, it just turns itself off. So without starting it, I can't even change the Startup type.

A:Error 0x80070426. Also can't activate Software Protection!

I found a way to change start-up type by editing regedit.

Here's how:
ctrl + r
Double click 'Start' key to change value
Do the same for 'DelayedAutoStart'

Change accordingly:
Automatic (Delayed Start)
DelayedAutostart = 1

Start = 2

DelayedAutostart = 0

Start = 2

DelayedAutostart = 0

Start = 3

DelayedAutostart = 0

Start = 4

Now, my problem is that the service turns itself off automatically, after a few minutes. Someone please chip in.

Hi all,

I've got a bit of a complex problem. Over the years I've custom built all my PCs. I went from Win ME to Xp to Win 7, and now upgraded my entire computer... I didn't think to check the old DvD drives, which were on an IDE cable which brand new motherboards don't have, so my new machine currently doesn't have any optical media installed. It will be a few weeks, the next paycheck, when I can buy a SATA drive.

I also purchased a Win 7 Pro key to upgrade my Win7 a little further, and ready for trying Win 10 perhaps later. Here's where the real fun starts.

After a few weeks of the key being valid, it suddenly appeared as not Genuine. Under System there's no listing of the Win7 key. Wondering if I'd been sold a pirate copy, I tried to validate it; but using the legitcheck.hta or the online verification process either simply hangs, or gives me the following message.

Windows could not be validated as genuine

The validation service couldn't determine whether the copy of Windows that is running on your computer is genuine. Please try to validate Windows again. If you keep getting validation errors, try to again later or contact support.

Attempting to validate again also fails.

As I don't have optical media, I'd downloaded an .iso of Win 7 to do a clean install from bootable USB, and ma... Read more

Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But... Read more

 Good evening all I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 3 earlier this year in Australia and have since moved to the Cayman Islands. The Yoga has a standard 2 prong Australian charger which is 100V-240V and 50-60Hz. I have purchased 2 different international adapters which I have plugged into 2 different outlets at the hotel but my lap top does not charge.  My dad suggested that I try plugging it into the hairdryer outlet in the bathroom as it may have higher voltage and that worked. I was also able to charge it by plugging it into an open socket that comes out of a clock at the hotel (pics attached). I'll be leaving the hotel shortly and am worried that I will not be able to charge my lap top in my new home. There are limited computer/electronics stores here. I'm not a very technical person so need your help, please! The notebook is under warranty but Lenovo said there is no issue with the laptop or charger because it works in the hairdryer outlet and that they have not heard of this issue before. However, I understand that the charger is designed so that it can work with various voltages and it doesn't seem to. Does anyone have any suggested solutions? The only one I can think of is to order a US charger as I understand they are the same shape and voltage as the Cayman Islands. Many thanks in advance for your assistance! Gemma

Cayman islands use US type plugs, but I would expect an Australian charger would work with a simple plug converter.

I keep getting pops from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware that there is and infection and it keeps giving me different IP addresses. I have malwarebytes anti malware on my computer and it pops up with things that say ip protection. I looked up the ip's of what it says in the log and they are 66.com, 67.com, 69.com, 75.com, 77.com, 95.com, 212.com

All the ones besides 69.com are Chinese.

Don't know if this matters but I am downloading a series of files from Arizona (not China) but it seems malwarebytes started freaking out then. I have scanned each incoming file with Mcafee and Malwarebytes and they are clean. I only mention it because that is all I am doing online besides looking at my mail and some websites I have always looked at without a problem.

Peer Gaurdian 2 only sees my downloads and allowed http traffic.

All comments appreciated.

Starting in version 1.40 the developers of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware introduced IP Protection:...IP Protection provides an additional layer of security for your computer, by preventing access to known malicious IP addresses and IP ranges...What does this notification mean?This notification means quite simply, that an IP address has been blocked. It does NOT necessarily mean you are infected, it simply means a program on your computer (e.g. your browser, IM program, P2P program etc), tried accessing a malicious IP address...I received a notification on a safe site, why?How do I disable this?I got an alert for an IP or website I think is safe, how can I report it?Does the IP Protection replace my firewall?Where do I find the IP Protection logs?How can I add an IP so it won't be detected and can access a site I need to?Malwarebytes Anti-Malware IP Protection FAQs

I find it very frustrating that all of a sudden I am unable to burn to CD-R songs which I have just purchased from Wal-Mart. I've burned numerous audio CD's before and have never had a problem like this.

For what it's worth, I have Win XP PRO and Windows Media Player 10.

Whenever I click on Start Burn I get the following message:
Windows Media Player cannot burn some of the files. To investigate the problem, click the icon next to the files in the burn list.

Then I see:
Status: An Error Occurred

Finally, I get this message:
Windows Media PLayer cannot play, burn , rip, or synce the protected file because you did not have the appropriate rights.

I just ran Belarc Advisor and see that I have the following programs installed:
Windows Media Player Format 11 SDK
Windows Media Player 10

Can someone please tell me what is going on?!! Why is it that I all of a sudden "do not have the appropriate rights" when it's obvious that I've always had them in the past. What must I do in order to get "the approriate rights"?

I read somewhere about "rolling back" to an earlier version of WMP, but that doing so might cause me to lost my "digital rights," or something like that. I don't understand the implications of "rolling back."

At this point I have absolutely no clue as to what to try next.

Note: My PC crashed last week and I had to do a complete reinstall of Win XP Professional. Could this somehow h... Read more

This is a problem I've had before but can't remember how to resolve it. As of today MB flags a message saying that Real Time Protection layers are turned off. These are Web Protection and Malware Protection.
What I've done: switched both on only for them to go off again, or Real Time Protection shows starting but doesn't go any further. I've also uninstalled my previous version and downloaded version 3.1.2. I am Premium user.

Can anyone shed any light on this and tell me how to resolve it please?

I recently had a problem with a constant popping sound and started a thread here for help: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/top...ml#entry1400691It helped me identify the source of the sound. It was suggested I post here to see if an infection is at the root of my problem.To sum up, I was hearing an almost constant bubble popping sound which ended up in fact being the Windows XP Balloon Tip Sound. After some trial and error with the advice given I found my registry had been changed to not show the balloons. Once I changed it back I began receiving the following balloon - "IP Protection Infection Detected" from Malwarebytes. Many IP's have shown up from various spots on the globe and it was suggested perhaps this forum could help me find if an infection on my PC is "calling out" to these IP's known to be associated with malware, etc.The people on the other forum were awesome and helped me get this far. If anyone can help from here it would be greatly appreciated!

An SSD has no moving parts so there's no need to run APS. If you don't have any HDDs inside your T420, e.g. in the Ultrabay or mSATA, you can just uninstall APS altogether.

Hello, I read the below post about using MSE + Malwarebytes and thought that seemed like a good option for my father-in-law's new laptop. It came with Windows 8 though and looking around on the internet I read some things that indicated MSE is not used on Windows 8 because it's been incorporated "into" Microsoft Defender.
1. Is that correct?
2. If so, doesn't that mean the computer is already protected automatically?
3. If 1&2 are correct would Malwarebytes still be needed or does Defender cover it all?
4. If Malwarebytes is still needed, are there any conflicts to be concerned with between it and Defender (i.e. does Defender need to be disabled before running Malewarebytes)?

P.S. His computer was the first I've seen w/Windows 8 and I actually didn't like it much. It took us 30 min to figure out how to select "shut down" but that may be a personal problem..lol I dread being forced into Windows 8 down the road with a new computer that will most likely have it pre-installed...

As I've said before, I always taken extra steps to insure our systems are protected.  I helped a friend about a month ago, which included installing Malwarebytes.  During the process, I backed (created a ZIP file) of (Windows 8):C:\Users\All Users\Malwarebytes\
Well, my friend got the message "Malware Protection Enabled, Malicious Website Protection DISABLED" last night.  Numerous reboots didn't help.  He brought his computer over, I took the ZIP file, and unzipped the files into the original location (after a full scan with AVAST and Malwarebytes), rebooted, and all was fine.  Then another scan (AVAST and Malwarebytes) was done, after Malwarebytes checked the updates to make sure they were current.
This is an idea to consider.  I've seen a post here, and on other sites, with the same complaint.  I know that this won't help a current problem, where a person hasn't backed up C:\Users\All Users\Malwarebytes\, but it will at least help you next time.
For people is the current problem.  I suggest that you uninstall MB, make sure that the above folder is gone, then reinstall and try it again.  If it works, then backup C:\Users\All Users\Malwarebytes\.  On other OS's, it up to you to find the proper location.
Have a great day!
