Cannot type in fields/sys restore window is blank

Q: Cannot type in fields/sys restore window is blank

Hello,

I cannot type in any text box fields on this XP system. In addition, System Restore will execute but the calendar window to select the restore date is blank.

I've attempted to boot from the OS disk and do a installation recovery but the "R" option it not available.

I could use some help.

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Cannot type in fields/sys restore window is blank

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I use Windows XP. I installed the AOL Safety and Security with AOL 9.0 Security Edition. I had McAfee Security System already installed. I thought it would be no problem since AOL Safety and Security is powered by McAfee. After conflicts with the two security systems I unstalled McAfee then the AOL Safety and Security. Now my "System Restore" comes up blank and I cannot access "Help and Support" from the start menu. I also cannot print from the internet and I cannot reinstall McAfee nor AOL Saftey and Security.
I cannot download anything from AOL or McAfee and I can't figure out what's blocking it. I have Windows antivirus and firewall working at this time.

That was a little background. I really want to know how to fix the "System Restore".

Hi there, I just had some issues with my System Restore and was looking for some answers. I had just recently got help from Surgeon General JSntgRvr with a complete lock virus on the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs part of the forum and he was able to get me running back on track and my computer is running smoothly. Our only problem was after getting the computer clean and we tried to run a System Restore and the window would be blank when trying to access it.

The work we had done to fix it is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic413263.html but dispite all of our attempts we were unable to get a System Restore function going. We've checked the permissions and other options and still no luck. I was redirected here to see if anyone could help with this particular problem. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi,
Run a desktop with Win Xp SP3 as OS. After updating to version 9 of Avast Free anti-virus, a couple of my programmes stopped functioning.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the earlier version 8 made those programmes work again. However, in the process it consistently takes two efforts to open the System Restore window and on doing so it is blank.

I am reasonably sure that during uninstalling Avast some registry entries have been corrupted.

Short of reformatting and reinstalling XP, are there some specific registry entries I can check and correct to make the System Restore Window display correctly?

Thank you.

i have created a form in word, adn i want it to be read only for most of the form. However, i do want certain fields to allow users to type in. Is there any way that i can easily do this. i know that this may seem kind of vague, let me know if you need any other info.

Too bad there's not a strikethrough text format. Anyway, ignore the stuff in red.

This is a common question that has no easy answer. There is no way to permanently lock the text of a document while leaving the fields open. There are some workarounds, such as using a background graphic instead of body text.

I don't know what I was thinking about when I wrote that, but it wasn't forms. It might have been converting a PDF document to a protected Word form. Another of Dreamboat's articles.
[/edit]

If you search the forums for something like Word form protect text, you might get some hits. The question gets worded differently from time to time, so play around with the search criteria until you get a thread that works for you.

Here are a couple of similar threads (searching word form lock text):

And here's a link with some general info. Thanks to Dreamboat for that.

When using internet explorer and a site for example ebay. It will only let me populate the Username Field, But when i try enter the password the field doesn't allow any data to be entered. This happens for other programs outwith Internet Explorer too.

The OS is Windows XP

What would cause this to happen?

Thanks

Press Tab instead of enter when you want to move to a password or other field in a form. Pressing enter pretty much means that all fields are complete (like pressing "Send" or "Submit" yourself).

One of our office computers won't allow the user to type in the search fields or log in fields within IE on any website. Can't search on Google, Yahoo, can't log in on hotmail or other online applications that we use at work. In addition to this issue; when I open Control Panel I get a script error, the icons on Add/Remove Programs are very small with no description of what the icons represent and if I try to udate Windows it tells me that it needs to install addiotional files to update the system but it gets locked into a loop where it installs then tells me that it needs to install the same files. I can't run a Panda scan because it asks for my e-mail address and I can't type into the field. When trying to run a Kaspersky online scan it won't update the new virus definitions which is an automatic action. When I try to run HouseCall it tells me that there is another HouseCall running and closes the prgram. There is no indication in Task Manager of two HouseCalls running. Ewido found some problems corrected them but didn't fix my problem. Replaced the mouse and did a restart so those won't work. The computer was running fine one evening and when we came in the next day it was acting this way.

AVG, AdAware run clean. I downloaded a trail Kaspersky Security program and it ran clean as well. Suggestions are welcomed.

Using Windows 7 I suddenly can't type in fields of secure documents (opened with https). I have tried documents such as for paying bills and making reports, using IE, Firefox, and Chrome. I have searched the web for "can't type in fields of secure documents". I get lots of hits, but none are appropriate and few have solutions anyway.

Problem partially solved. Still have no clue as to why I could not type into form fields, even logons, google ... but a simple re-boot and now I can enter text into form fields. However, sporadically I lose control of positioning - sometimes the arrows stop working, and sometimes I cannot change position in the form by moving the cursor. What is going on?

I'm not sure what to do here...

After downloading Explorer 8 (and updating Windows) I am unable to type in any field below the top pane. (I can type text just fine in my google search field and the url field)

I un-installed Explorer 8 (which re-installed Explorer 7) with no improvement.

I noticed that after completing the Windows update (I have Service Pack 3) my Anti Virus (Zone Alarm) had been blown away. I had to re-install it. I've since learned that I should disable anti-virus software prior to doing Windows updates.

Is this a virus?

Thanks.

Hello,

My 8 year old son decided to download some Malware onto my computer while I was deployed the last few months.  Anyway Im running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and am having issues entering text into IE 11.  I believe the issue stems from PUP.Optional.MindSpark.

Im pretty sure I removed MindSpark completely by using MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and CCleaner to get rid of it.  I also have McAfee AntiVirus which didnt catch Mindspark.

So the problem now and when the PUP was on my computer is that I cannot enter text into text fields on IE 11.  Right now Im using Google Chrome and am having no issues with it, but I would like to get the IE 11 problem fixed.  Also as a note if I run IE 11 as an administrator it acts normal, but as soon as I close the browser and reopen it, it stops working again.  A couple of things I have done that wound up with no results include:  Restoring Internet options to default, turning off protected mode, and ran a Windows system performance scan.  Also Ive made sure everything on my computer has the latest and greatest updates.

So hopefully somebody here can help me out.

Thanks!

Hello, I use online accounting software (KashFlow) and part of entering invoices involves clicking into a date input field.  It is one of those where a little calendar shows when you click into the field.  You can also manually type a date into this field too. However. On my brand new Yoga 920 using Chrome and Firefox the date input fields are greyed out and a red 'no access' icon shows when you hover over them.  But you can still click it and the calendar pops up as normal.  The only difference is you can NOT type into them anymore. When the source for the page is viewed it looks like the fields have been designated 'readonly'. There is no such problem on any other computer I own, even when using Chrome or Firefox.  The date fields work perfectly well on these other computers - even on a Sony Xperia tablet I own. The only browser that works properly on my Yoga is Edge.  The date fields work as they should.  It's just Chrome (my main browser) and Firefox where they don't work. This seems like a Lenovo-based problem.  A little Google has revealed a couple of similar problems with other Lenovo users. Does anyone have any clue on how to fix this?  This is utterly bizarre behaviour and it's preventing me from working properly. I have attached a photo showing the problem when using Chrome.  These fields should never be greyed out. Thanks,Matt

I upgraded my laptop to Win 8.1 a few days ago and everything seemed to be working fine. I ran into an issue today using the desktop version of IE 11 where I can type text into the address bar but if I select a field on a web page, I am not able to type text into it. I normally use FireFox as my browser and it works fine (as does Chrome). If I bring up the Metro version of IE 11, I can enter text fine.

Anybody got any ideas how to fix this? It's not a big deal since I rarely use IE but it bugs me now that I know about it. I just checked on a netbook I upgraded and don't see the issue there.

I must be having a brain fade here but what i want to do is real simple, just can't get it right.

I have a field on an MS Access form and all I want to do is check if something has been entered into it.

Something along thw line of :-
if field is blank do then
do something
else if field is equal to spaces then
do something different
end if

of the life of me I can't get it to work :-(

A:Blank fields in Access

I'm presuming this is just pseudocode for a corresponding Vb project.

If so then i recommend:

Option Explicit

Dim wksp As Workspace
Dim db As Database

Private Sub command1_Click()

Dim entry As Recordset
Dim search_string as string

search_string = txt_search_string.text

Set wksp = DBEngine.Workspaces(0)
Set db = wksp.OpenDatabase(App.Path & "\DATABASE NAME.mdb")

Set entry = dbfacilities.OpenRecordset("SELECT * FROM [TABLE NAME] WHERE [FIELD NAME] = '" & search_string & "'")

If entry.RecordCount = 0 Then
MsgBox ("The field is blank")

txt_search_string.Text = ""
txt_search_string.SetFocus

Else
'unsure of what you wanted here...
End If

Hope this helps.

When I bring up Internet explorer many websites will not display correctly. For instance here http://xbox360.ign.com/ much of the page will display properly, but the headline story will not. Also when the advertisement/redirect page comes up when you first click on the page(sometimes it doesn't) the advertisement will not come up nor will it redirect to the main page. If I click on link buttons nothing happens, a regular link works fine, just not the button style ones(I guess buttons is a good description heck I dunno)

Also when I go to web based mail pages much of the page will display, but the body of e-mails will not. When I use IM, such as Yahoo messenger, I can bring up the program and type in messages but the message window that displays replies remains blank. I can neither see my message or the persons reply.

I know when this started I loaded a game and was asked to load some strange messenger program(something or other X) for chatting with other gamers during online matches. I loaded it by accident and un-installed and deleted it. Since then I cannot use messenger or internet explorer.

A friend was trying to show me how to use Access today and she said one thing I could easily do is create an access file with all my addresses in outlook (which I could later use to make forms). I have the addresses exported to CSV but there are businesses (of varying categories - legal related, business related, customer related, etc) and there are individual customers. The businesses, naturally, don't have any names filled in for the first name/last name categories in Outlook, and my friend said she *thinks* this may cause issues when importing to Access because it sorts alphabetically. Will this be a problem? She said I could create multiple versions of contact lists but that sounds a bit complicated (with some businesses falling into multiple categories, for instance) and as she said herself she's a bit rusty and she just thinks it might be a problem, I wanted to check before proceeding either way. Thanks and I hope this isn't too vague!

I am making a very basic spreadsheet to keep track of daily field production. I am keeping track of two line types (RCV and SRC) a total production in KM's and then ranking each employee based on total production (combining the two line types) and then ranking each employee's production (1 being highest) and the problem I cannot figure out after hours of googling is how to omit my blank fields so that my rankings will not include them. The function i've created is:

=RANK(F11,F$11:F38,0)

This works fine except my empty rows still have a ranking to them but I only want to rank the rows I am using.

Also, I would like the #1 ranked employee row to be shaded green and the lowest ranked to be shaded red. I figured out how to change the #1 ranked to be shaded green under conditional formatting but was unable to shade the lowest rank red.

I attached a screenshot of how I would like the sheet to look except that I left the "9" rankings to show where I'd like no value to come up.

Please Help! I've spent hours and hours trying to figure it out on my own!

I have solved most problems, however, I am unable to insert a field into the address of the link (to make the link dynamic) without utilizing the showfieldcodes command (which is very memory and time consuming since the documents I am working on are very large). Below is my code. I was wondering if there is any way to set the address as a field? Or somehow input an address and it would be understood by word to be field.

I use the following html and javascript in an <A> onclick() handler to always open a new window.
<A onclick="OpenMyWin()" target="MyWin" href="(url to htm page)">My Win Link</A>

function OpenMyWin(){
var  myWin= open("", "MyWin", "width=990,height=350,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes" );
myWin.focus();
}
I tried using the url instead of "" for the open(), but then it always opens only in a tab.
I've tried the various IE Tabs options.
This works on some systems (Win7, WS2008R2), but on a new install of WS2008R2 and WS2012R2 it always brings up both when I click the anchor link.
The doctype for the page is <!DOCTYPE html>
What I want to happen is that the link opens in the window where about:blank is opening, (and with the content displayed and not blank), and not in the tab. Instead I'm getting a blank new window AND the content in a new Tab.
Is this a problem with IE or the html/javascript ?

Hi all,

I?m really in need of some help from some Access experts! I?m a newbie to Access, but I got myself busy with quite a big project... I?m trying to map out the product supply to shops in the whole country. I?ve come quite far for a starter, but I keep having 3 questions, it would be great if you could help me with this!

I have, amongst other tables, two tables called Stock_counted and Reported_quantity.

The table Stock_counted has the following fields:
- Shop_number
- Product_code
- Quantity_counted

The table Reported_quantity has the following fields:
- Shop_number
- Product_code
- Quantity_in
- Quantity_lost_or_returned
- Quantity_out

1. What I would like to do is to make it one table based on Shop_number AND Product_code. So in one record I would like to have Shop_number, Product_code, Quantity_in, Quantity_lost_or_returned, Quantity_out and Quantity_counted. How do I do this, making sure that the quantities end up behind the right product and shop? It is possible that some shops don?t have all items, while other shops might not have all products reported, or both. On top of that, I have another table with a price for each product, which needs to be related to it as well.

2. It happens that some products are found more than once in one specific shop and therefore appear more than once in the table, with the same shop number and product code. How do I automatically SUM these quantities, so that this product only shows up once per shop?

thank you in advance... Raq.

A:can not type in a blank document ! WHY?

It sounds like you do not have the proper software installed on your computer to edit this document.

You do not mention what format this document is in, but if it is a .pdf file, then Adobe Reader will let you read it, but not edit it.

My suggestion would be to contact the powers that be in your organization for specific instructions or for info on what software is needed.

I was trying to get some help the other night with my router, and the Belkin associate told me to type 'cmd' in my RUN tool bar, and when the DOS window opened they instructed me to type something in the black window, but one of two things happen: 1) It does not respond to my keyboard (I've confirmed the keyboard is plugged in and working, 2) I get an alert pop-up that says "16 bit MS-DOS Subsytem" - C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.com - The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction."

I'm running a DELL Dimension 4500s with Windows XP. Belkin told me to get this fixed and then come back to them for help with the router ... can anyone help me?

Thanks so much!

A:I Cannot Type in my MS-DOS Window

cmd.com is not a legit windows file, see here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definition/cmd/

The correct name for the Windows file is cmd.exe -- type that in the Run box and you'll get the actual windows command line and should be able to type and do what Belkin wants you to do.
However, the infection may be what is causing your problems to start with, as any windows process that needs to run something in a command prompt window won't be able to function properly.
Go to Download HiJack This

Click the Download HijackThis Installer link.
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Click Install
Click the I Accept button on the License Agreement Window
The Main Menu window will open
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
It will scan, save the log in C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis, and then the log will open in Notepad.
In Notepad, click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire log.
Start a new thread in the Malware Removal Forum
Paste the entire log into the reply window below your description of the problem.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds is required or harmless.
Give as much information about the problem as you can. Be sure to note that the error message refers to cmd.com, not cmd.exe, and let them know if cmd.exe runs properly. Also give any other sympt... Read more

A:System Restore Opens @ Restore Window

One of the first things to do is eliminate the possibility of malware. Have you ran a full scan with your antivirus?

What you describe may be a trick of a virus writer to protect his work, since you can help remove a virus with system restore.

If no suggestion of malware:

Make sure that Volume Shadow Copy service is started.
Follow these steps:
a. Click Start, type “services.msc” (without quotes) and press Enter.
b. Locate "Volume Shadow Copy" service, right click on it and then click Start.
c. Start up type should be “Automatic”.

If that doesn’t work, then Perform System File Check to fix the corrupted system files and then check if this fixes the issue.
Refer the link "How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7" to perform System File Check.
Note: It may ask for windows DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

I'm not really sure if I can explain this properly.

Occassionally I will see appear very briefly a little 'window' on the taskbar of my XP system.
This window has the appearance of a MS-DOS type window, similar to Run/cmd window when minimised.
It has no title and only appears for perhaps 1-2 secs, certainly not long enough to open it or investigate further. It is also irregular in timing i.e. it appears when it feels like it. It does not appear to be related to any particular program or application that may be running. Although I have IE running nearly all the time (as I am writing this it has appeared/disappeared).
Is this some way to be able to perhap 'capture ' what is happening on my PC so that I could investigate it further?
[It may be coincidence but the PC appears to be running more slowly lately and this window may it's appearance around the same time. Or may I'm just paranoid? ]

A:Brief MS-DOS type window in taskbar

Hi

Well it certainly looks like something malicious, but just try this and see if you can tell:

The next time you expect it to happen, have Task Manager started up by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and have the Processes tab opened.

Make sure you can see everything on it (expand it) and click the "Image Name" tab to have it alphabetically assorted.

Now keep an eye on which process starts up at the same time as the window. You should be able to capture it.

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend. She's running XP and she's unable to type in Internet Explorer or Firefox. Any suggestions?

A:Unable to type in any browser window

I guess that I don't understand...type what, where?

You mean...unable to post, as at a forum?

Type on a webpage?

Can we get some more definitive specifics?

Error messages?

System and manufacturer?

No matter how many times I go to 'View' settings, every time I choose a new window (i.e. opening a folder) I am always met with a small-format window rather than a full-screen, full-size one. I also am met with random lists instead of 'medium-sized icons', which I have opted for and chosen as default in 'view'. Have I missed a colossally simple tick in a box?

A:'New window' selection is always the wrong size/type...

Hello James,

By default, folder views are a per folder setting, and will be the same as when last closed per folder.

In a library, the folder view is shared between all included folders in the library.

If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to set a default folder view for all folders.
Folder Template - Set Default for All Folders in Windows 8
Afterwards, open File Explorer, maximize it to full screen, and close File Explorer. Each time you open File Explorer it should now open full screen as it was last closed.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi this is my 3rd post on smitrem. i have already developed immense gratitude and respect towards this forum.
I am a doctor basically.i need to apply for a lot a jobs as part of my career. Most of the job applications will be in the acrobat format i mean they are pdf files.can anyone tell me is there anyway to type on the pdf files, like we type on ms-word.i can fill my application forms on the pc instead of taking a printout and printing on them with a pen.please help.

A:How To Type On Acrobat Format Window{pdf Files}

Hi doctorreddy28,

That depends on the permissions the author of the PDF gives you. Open the document - click on file - document properties - click on the security tab. A window will list the documents permissions. My experience is that you can type in the blanks of most pdf documents, but you cannot save the changes. Again it depends on what the author allows you to do.

*one side note and pat on the back for the IRS... They did modify their online forms to allow changes and saving of the form this year*

I hope this helps...

Hope this hasent already been addressed somewhere, but I could not find it:

When in a forum and making a new post, everything is fine when typing text in the text window until I reach the bottom of the text window. At that point, any additional lines of text will not show other than a brief blink as I type text. For instance - if the window will hold 10 lines of text, lines 11 on down simply do not appear in the window when I stop typing. The additional line appears breiefly as each character is typed, then disappears. Yes, I can scroll down and see what I have typed and the text stays that way until I hit another character, then snaps back up to show only the first 10 lines of text.
Only cure I can find is to do my post in notepad then copy/paste to the forum's text window.

Very annoying and should not act that way.

OS is Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
Have tried both IExplorer 64 bit and IExplorer 32 bit

Thought I would address this question now that I have found the answer.........

If you are ever faced with this phenomenon, go to the top menu of IE8 and click Page. Now from the drop-down, select Compatibility View.
The problem will now go away. This is an issue in IE8 and not with W-7.
By the way, Microsoft has compiled a list of sites to be viewed in Compatibility View and IE8 automatically switches to that view when you enter the site. You can tell if you are viewing one of these sites by clicking Page. The Compatibiliyy View will be greyed out.

DNSunlocker was put on my computer and I can't uninstall it; the message is, "this file does not exist." I would like to create a restore point BEFORE this was installed.  How do I do this??

A:How to type in my own restore point

Hello and welcome onboard ! Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. I'm afraid what you like is not possible - you cannot create a System Restore point now for a time in the past. That's because now is now and past has gone simply You cannot return it. You can create a restore point NOW which you can use in the FUTURE to get back system files to state NOW. But this is not recommended at the moment as your computer is infected. DNSunlocker is known adware/malware/virus. It is a nasty one. You can find more information about it here >> https://malwaretips.com/blogs/ads-by-dnsunlocker-removal/ Please, follow the instructions in MalwareTips website (skip Step 2 for AdwCleaner) - run the rest of the programs and steps to get rid of this pest. Please, let me know how it goes after that and if this helped.  For future protection, check how you protect yourself, what sites you visit and what you install. Use reputable security products (hopefully not free AV software). We could discuss this eventually once your machine is clean. You may also want to change your most important passwords for bank accounts, emails, social networks once you are clean.

As some know, I will soon have a new Toshiba laptop. I will be making the recommended restore DVD. What type of DVD should I use?

Also, will this type work well for backing up programs and data files? I will not be burning any music or videos. If not, what type is recommended.

Thanks, {redoak}

I have an ASUS Altec Lansing laptop which I am trying to repair. It was given to me by a friend as it was unable to load windows. It came with a recovery disk no OEM and I was able to run the repair successfully and it reinstalled Win 7 HP 64 bit. I partioned the hard drive into C and D. This laptop hadn't been used in awhile so there were many updates to install which it did with the exception of the graphics card driver. Occasionally, I would get the BSOD but was able to recover and launch Windows.
I have tried various boot up options (f8) in the list but wanted to use safe mode with command prompt it comes up as x:\windows\system32\cmd.exe but does not allow keyboard imput so that's a first for me. My first thought is that it's not seeing the c: drive where the OS was installed.
I changed the boot order in the bios to run from the cd drive so I could run the recovery disk again but it's not bringing up the system tools to allow me to do anything......actually it did a couple of days ago it didn't show a drive to repair that box was blank and it wouldnt let me reinstall drivers and just hung there.
Any suggestions would be great I'm using this laptop to learn with so even if I have to go back to the beginning its fine.

A:Unable to type in the command prompt window and other issues

I am not sure it will work on the laptop but download ASUS's diagnostic tool.

If not ASUS's tool you can run Seatools for Windows to check your hard drive and Memtest+86 to check your memory. Run the memory test for at least 6 passes and preferably overnight.

Hi,
Needed to system restore a few times to get all back to working. C drive went from 19 gigabytes to 29. Is this a concern I need or I can forget it. Still have more than sufficient space.
THANKS

A:XP sp 3 system restore doubled system fields

Hello and welcome to Bleepingcomputer.

You did a system restore and chances are you have more space taken up then you did before the roll-back.

You can go to My Computer right click your hard drive, choose Properties, click the disk clean up tab, then delete any temporary files, this will retrieve your disk space.

Bruce.

Hi,

I've recently noticed two entries at the top of the Task Manager which have blank "user name" and "description" fields. The first entry is about 1,300K, and the other is 660K.

When I right click on either, I can select "Perform Administrative Task". If I choose to do so, the blank entries disappear, and the "show processes from all users" box is checked.

I wonder if this is a security issue that Spybot, Windows Defender and AVG Free haven't picked up.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
