No dialling tone

Q: No dialling tone

I am using Windows XP Home. I recently had ADSL installed and activated for internet access. Access is by landline provided by the telephone company. However since installation I am unable to obtain a dialling tone or connection for analog dial-up or to send faxes. My analog telephone service (via the same line) is OK and the analog line computer connection also OK. The original analog modem remains as previously.
I have spent hours going through the various checks, installation wizards etc via Control Panel and everything is reportedly OK and in working order. Nevertheless I can get no dialling tone and consequently no connection.

Any suggestions or answers? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been trying to dial-up on a PC (Windows XP). I was able to get on-line yesterday using a telephone-line elsewhere, but I cannot get on-line today using a different telephone-line. I know that this telephone-line works, because my MacBook dials out on it perfectly -- I am using the MacBook on this line to write this message.

When I listen to the PC's attempts to connect, there is silence until the modem dials, then there is a continuous rather high tone behind the sound of the dialling, until finally there is a message that 'the remote computer did not respond.'

When I listen to the MacBook, there is what sounds like a short dialling-tone, then the sound of dialling, then the usual white noise associated with the hand-shake, &c., and a good connexion every time.

Can anyone help ?

My computer keeps dialling up by itself. I have updated and run spybot and adaware but it still keeps trying to dial up every 5 minutes. What do you think is going on?

Wendy

A:Dialup keeps dialling by itself!

Hi Wendy.... Dialup connections will try to connect, if you are offline, whenever you click something that uses the Internet...and it could be something that wants an update, too that starts the dialup... and as you know it could be something bad, SO:

Post a Hijackthis log, it's a way to spot these spyware dialers that could be on there...

Download the program below, it is free, small, and will hopefully show us if anything needs to be removed.

When the File Download box comes up, click Save, then when the Save As box is up, for Save In> use the drop down arrow there on the side to set it to Desktop, download hijackthis.exe to Desktop, and run it, use the "Scan and save a log" button.....open a Reply to this thread, go to your opened and saved log in Notepad, and at the top click EDIT> Select All and click EDIT> Copy, go to your blank reply and click once inside the white space then at the top of your browser window hit EDIT> Paste.

When I start Windows Media Player 10 and select the "Library" tab the computer automatically starts to connect to the internet (I am on dial-up) and as per the item next to the little globe at the bottom I seem to end up at "sib1.od2.com". I don't want this to happen. If I select "File", then "Work Offline", I get a message saying "The WebPage you have requested is not available offline". I wasn't aware I was even requesting a webpage.

If I have selected the "Work Offline" option in WMP 10, the next time I try and connect to the internet normally, without even going near WMP10, I can't until I correct that setting.

Is there a way to stop WMP10 trying to connect to the net automatically without upsetting the applecart for normal internet connection?

I'm using Windows XP Home SP2 and IE7.

A:Windows Media Player 10 - Why dialling internet?

In WMP, click tools, options.
On the player tab make sure the 'connect to the internet' box is unchecked.
On the library tab make sure 'retrieve additional information' box is unchecked.
And for good measure on the privacy tab make sure the first 2 boxes (display media information' and 'update music files') are unchecked.

Hello
I'm posting about my weird problem (potentially) with PC and girlfriend somewhat xP
So few days ago, we were watching a movie on PC with my gf, somewhere in the middle I went to WC, she paused movie and after about 3 minutes when I came back, she told me that there was something weird with PC and that it "was making dialling like sound (three signals) and after that emitted some small green light on the left side".
After that PC was operating absolutely normally like always, no problems.
I was like WTF, is that even possible? I heard about some beeps on older mobos when there were some problems in PC (with RAM for example)but that occurs in POST screen, and I never heard about any sound given by PC while working PLUS some green light on top of that...

My question is - is something like that even possible on PC? I think she may have heard something other (outside the window/ from neighbors living upper floor) and just misplaced that sound came from PC actually.
More bothering would be that green flash, my mobo is ASROCK H81M-ITX and I don't think there are even any LED's on it.

Could be anything... model, age, setup, operating system... need for a re-installed or upgraded driver, hard drive failing, defective component... defective wireless modem... wireless device that is too close to a wall or other interference...
First, you might try downloading and re-installing the drivers... then try installing another hard drive, if you have one handy... That will be one way to test your current installation...

Currently my system works fine. Desktop box runs XP PRO; cisico ip phone 7965 ;outlook 2007. I can dial directly from outlook. There was a download from cisco which linked the two systems.

I will need to upgrade my desktop which will run windows 7 [possibly 64 bit]. I will oad outlook 2007.

I am advised that I will not be able to link my new desktop to Cisco system using that download and Cisco have not [and are unlikely to] update the download.

Is this true? It seems unlikely that a company the size of cisco would want to offend their users like that.

I've had a scout around the forums here to see if there's already an answer here, but haven't found anything, so here goes my first query

I've just set up a laptop for a friend, Windows XP SP2 and Office 2003.
When we load Outlook, it insists on immediately bringing up a dial-up connection window - and I've definitely unticked the "Send and Receive at start-up" box (options / E-Mail Settings).

Can anyone think where else there's a setting for this I might have missed?

hi yall i am having a mindblowing time with a series of two-tone beeps which starts straight after
boot-up. the only way I can describe it is (that it sounds like the old police/ambulance/fire engine) sounds.
the only time that it stops is when WINDOWS DEFENDER goes into schedule scan. back to the sounds thinking back to the good old days was that it was described as a DONKEY giving out HEE-HAW-HEE-HAW.
anyway back to the problem, hope someone can help! silver surfer

A:Two-tone?

Hi big-gw.
That two-tone alarm sound at boot is most likely a cpu overheat alarm, though why it would stop at a defender scan is a mystery. Making sure the cpu fan is clean and running would be the very first thing to check.

I had my laptop serviced by the manufacturer. I had the hard disk restored from
backup and I ran into a problem with the fax which had not existed before the
service. I am trying to establish whether the problem is with the hardware
which requires to send the laptop back.

I have one phone line which I split into two by inserting 2 RJ11 cables into
a dual connector: one goes to the phone, one to the laptop/fax. I use one
device at a time, of course.

When I try to fax from the laptop I don't get a dial tone. I also noticed that
as long as the fax line is inserted into the connector, the phone does not get
a dial tone either; when I disconnect the laptop fax cable, the phone tone comes back.

A:No fax dial tone in XP

Welcome to TSG!

If plugging the phone line into the laptop's RJ-11 connector kills the dial tone then it's a hardware problem. Check to make sure the wires in the socket are not bent/crossed. Could be plugging in the cable is shorting the pins together. In that case it will happen even when the laptop is shut down.

If they look OK, I'd be contacting the manufacturer.

A:no dial tone

The most common reason is that the phone cord connecting your modem to the wall jack is plugged into the wrong jack on the modem. To check this, look at the back of your modem (if it's external) or at the back of the computer (if the modem is internal) for a slot or pair of slots that a phone cord fits into. If there are two jacks that the cord can fit into, try the other one.

if not help try reinstalling it goto controlpanel>phone and modem options>modems>remove & add new

When I try to connect the phone to the modem, I can hear a dial tone but when i use bitware or even express dial to make a call, the message appears that there is no dial tone and I can't make a call.. I hope someone can help me.. thanx!!

I've noticed on some of mine, you'll have to load the drivers for the modem to enable the sound on the computer's speakers.

I have my modem set to redial automatically after a disconnect from my Internet connection. It used to work fine but suddenly began having a problem a few months ago. Now, whenever the Internet connection is lost (whether by a ping timeout or intentional disconnect), there is no dial tone when I try to reconnect (and I get a message "opening port" then "no dialtone"). I have to physically unplug the phone cord from the back of the computer or from the wall and plug it back in, sometimes several times, before there is a dial tone.

A phone company technician has been to my house and says the connection to the outside of the house and inside to the computer is fine. They can hear a hum coming from inside the computer when they hook up some phone techie instrument to the phone slot, though. The technician admitted he knows nothing about computers, so maybe this hum is insignificant.

I have the same problem when I use an external U.S. Robotics modem or the internal BCM V.92 56k modem that came with my Dell dimension 8200 Windows XP PRO computer. Using the XP troubleshooter, I notice that the internal modem is attached to COM3, located at PCI Slot 2 (PCI bus 2, device 8, function 0), but Com 3 does not show up under Device Manager Ports (only Com 1 and LPT 1 are there). I do see PCI bus under System Devices, and the status says "working properly." The external modem uses Com 1, which is also "working properly."

Since the problem occurs wi... Read more

A:no dial tone after disconnect

It really does sound like a problem with the phone line hardware as it occurs with 2 modems.

Do phones hang up OK on the line? What happens if you unplug all other phones in the house?

I wonder about "ground loops" in the electrical system? Unsure of the US power system and grounded outlets, so cannot advise furter on this matter, but it's something that would be common to both modems connected to the PC.

You should not expect COM3 to show in device manager, it is a software generated "virtual Comport".

When I turn the pc off, I still hear a high tone pinch sound, I'm not sure where it comes from. And only when I turn off the power supply as well, the sound dissapears. So what is this sound and what part does it come from? The videocard has already been removed.

Newbie to Windows 7x64. I'm getting a regular alert tone of chimes for something through the headsets. But I see no indication why. The Action Center is empty. Nothing seems out of place. The other possibility is also new - Kaspersky ISS 2013. But it too is not showing anything amiss.

Is there some sort of system log in Win7 that I can read to see what is happening at the same time I hear an alert?

My guess: because she's talking to you on the same phone line that her modem is trying to use.
