Stuck with XP laptop, speed it up

Q: Stuck with XP laptop, speed it up

Unfortunately I have a work laptop I have to use. I'm running Win7 to write this but I had a few BSODs and it's put me off. Anyway, I can't find the original install files to blank everything and start again (rosettaStone language pack discs & excel)

I've already upgraded the HDD. RAM is 2GB, CPU is dual ~2gb. Win7 experience is 2.2. I've also used TuneUp to check nothing I don't need is running on startup. I've defragged including the pagefile.

As you can imagine XP has got bogged down. I'm running TuneUpUtils and this has definitely improved things a lot but it's such a shock to go back to compared to fairly fresh install of Win7.

It turns out that this laptop isn't actually compatible with win7 and Dell offer NO drivers for it. All the drivers are from intel and microsoft. I guess I shouldn't risk it any more with this laptop on Win7.

I guess what I want to understand is why a reinstall every year or so has to be the only way with everything... just to hard to go the other way...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have rcently bought a - yoga-900-13isk, 16 GB Ram and 2.5Ghz processor.Running windows 10,Pro Edition.  64 Bit operating system. The CPU speed is stuck between .39 and .36Ghz - the unit is so slow it is unuseable. The BIOS is up to date according to the lasest BIOS I updated at Lenovo - (c6cn37ww.exe) and I have turned off all the power management.I have run a hardware scan and all that is good too. The unit is not running hot or overheating. There seems to be lots of comments on the forums and net in general about people having this same issue with the Lenovo Yogas - what else can I try before this brand new laptop gets sent back for a refund? Any ideas would be appreciated.I'm a develop working in  large microsoft environment, running visual studio 2015 Enterprise and SQL server 2014 and am the person in this office having the problem.  Lots of other developers running Lenovo Thinkpads without an issue - it is just this brand new Yoga that is having the problems.

I'm using Dell Inspiron 15R N5110, which has Intel Core I7 2630QM. I recently installed Windows 7 SP1, uninstalling Windows 10. I ran Windows Experience Index and CPU-Z,
and my CPU rating is decreased to 4.5 (previously 7 or above). I checked CPU-Z showing the CPU running at a low speed. At task manager resource monitor in windows 8.1 it show CPU speed always at 0.76 GHz and remains same even if I load CPU heavily up to 100% .
But I also checked in Safe Mode it Worked fine there and CPU speed goes above 0.76 GHz and even to Turbo as well. But I can't figure out what is the problem in Normal Mode where CPU always runs at 0.76 GHz. How to figure out what's going on. I also diagnosed CPU by Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool  and it passed everything. How can this be fixed.???

Says it in the title really, the temps at idle are a reasonably frosty 25 degrees, but the fan remains a constant 100%. My bios settings have automatic thermal control on. One feature of my asus board is "Q-fan control" which should allow the MB to control the CPU fan speed ive tried this setting on and off, no difference. The cpu cooler is the standard intel one connected to a four pin fan connector. I can use speed fan to reduce the fan speeds, but i'd rather try and get the bios to do it for me.

I've had the computer a while, but im not sure whether the problem is new as i had always assumed it was my GFX card making the noise.

My guess is a quirk in the bios that might be fixed by flashing, but thats a risky process so i don't want to risk it yet.

Hello people,

Couple of days ago i was surfing the web and this yellow bar on top of the screen popped up and said to download this file. So i clicked it and downloaded the file without any knowing of it and my computer started to freeze and eventually froze completly. I restarted my computer and went online and felt that the pages that i was surfing was slower. I tried downloading a file to test my internet speed and it was 25 - 40 kb/s unlike the original speed that was about 160 kb/s at max.

Bascically my internet has capped incredibly low and since hasn't increased.
I also have eset nod32 antivirus 4 and windows 7 64 bit compatibility.

Hi guys,
I own an ASUS K53TA. A few months back I noticed that my CPU was stuck at 800 MHz even at High Performance mode.
So I tried re-installing drivers, re-install windows, run Prime-95 but nothing worked.
I sent the laptop for RMA and after struggling to figure out what to do for 2 months (LOL!) they replaced my CPU entirely.
I checked at the service center in cpu-z that the CPU was working as expected giving a clock of 1.4 GHz with occasional 2.3 GHz turbo boost. But the battery was dying so it went to hibernation automatically. After I recharged it to full battery, I booted into windows resume and the problem appeared once again.
But the CPU works fine in linux systems so I think the problem is with hibernation.
The GPU works fine so there is no problem with the power supply.
How can I reset the CPU???
P.S. Re-installing windows didn't work.

Hello and welcome to the forums Uttaran.

Have you checked the power options in control panel? Under advanced settings, see how it's set.
I have included a picture of how mine looks.

I might be way off the mark on this but it's worth checking.

Preface: This is a solved issue, but may help anyone who comes across this bug in the future. I found a similar post in the forum, but there the solution was "fixed itself". Not very helpful. Problem: Both GPU and CPU fans stuck on high speed while the internal temperatures are very low (~30C). Solution: Reset the internal battery. Symptoms: During the boot process the fans spool up, then calm down until windows starts up. Then stay at high RPM, even when manually overriding. The fans stay on high even when in the BIOS menu. CPU, GPU, RAM and disk usage are all within normal idle values. SpeedFan and MSI Afterburner both report the GPU and CPU temps to be around 30 degrees, which is lower than normal idle. Using RW Everything, the Embedded Controller reports the following:  0x930x940x950x960x970x98847B7C047B7Cleft fan modedesired speedset speedright fan modedesired speedset speed Value 84 at 0x93 is certainly an error, as it should have either be 04(auto) or 14(manual).  Using NoteBook FanControl and overriding the settings results in the fans rapidly speeding up and slowing down and the "desired speed" values flipping between FF (min) and 7B (moderately high). The 84 at 0x93 also turns to 94. After resetting the battery idle temps rose back to ~45C and the fans return to normal idle speeds (F0/FF). They also properly spool up under load.

I have an issue with my graphic card very recently. My graphic card is a Sapphire AMD Radeon R9 280 with a core clock speed ranging between 300 and 940 MHz. Normally when my computer is idle it is at 300 MHz and when im playing a game like the witcher 3 it is 940 MHz, thats how this graphic card always worked and I think this is how this graphic card should work normally.

The problem now is that when my computer is idle the core clock speed is stuck at 501 MHz and when I play a game it is stuck at 850 MHz, it just doesn't want to go any higher or lower. I uninstalled my graphic card drivers using the developers uninstaller and installed it again, which didnt worked, and after that I used DDU to uninstall the drivers and installed it again.

When I start my computer for the first time after the reinstall the core clock speeds work normally again between 300 and 940 MHz but as soon as I restart my computer it is stuck betweern 501 and 850 MHz again.

Also doesn't matter if my computer is idle or on performance, the memory clock speed is always 1250 MHz, which bothers me a lot and causes a higher temperature and fan on my GPU.

I am really clueless and I hope someone here can help me.

Many thanks!

I received my yoga 730 15" just yesterday, and after installing a few games like fortnite and overwatch and testing them. They both run horribly even at the lowest graphics, in fortnite i get 20fps with huge stutters, and overwatch somewhat better, still almost unplayable though. Today, i found out that after launching the game and in about a minute or two the CPU clock speed goes down from 3.3 GHz to around 0.8GHz. When the laptop is idle, its speed is +3GHz but when gaming less than 1GHz, shouldn't it be the other way around? I've looked around the internet for a solution all day, but I cannot find anything that helps. Should I just return this and get a replacement or something if no solution is found? Anyways, feel free to suggest any solutions that may help. Thanks!

I seriously don't know where else to turn and could use some community knowledge. I have a new Carbon X1 Extreme that I purchased mainly to do some heavy Excel and Python lifting. (I work in Finance) Shortly after switching to this machine I noticed while calculating my workbooks the fans would no longer spin up and the utilization and speed were stuck at the rates below. (picture) I'm a pretty experienced PC builder and I've gone through every option in excel (Adv. options to set to multitask and use all logical processors), windows (process priority set to high, Affinity set to all logical processors, all power saving options turned off) and in the bios. (to disable intel's power states) No matter what I do this is what I get every time I calculate a workbook. Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.  (FYI office ambient temps are 72F and the computer gets more than adequate air flow.)

Starting about two days ago both my case fan and CPU fan have been stuck running at full speed  constantly. I doubt it has anything to do with heat because the fans run at full speed at boot up even if the computer hasn't been used for over 12 hours, and the room it is in is kept at 70 degrees F. I have already attempted updating drivers and updating windows but nothing has resulted in a fix, i'm not sure what else to do

First of all I'll tell you what I'm running:
Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel T7250 2.0 GHz
250GB Samsung Internal HDD

My old hard drive died recently, so this morning I switched it for a brand new replacement.

Upon reinstalling Windows it was clear that the computer was running dreadfully slowly, so I downloaded CPU-Z to see what the CPU was doing. CPU-Z says that the processor is running with an apparently unchanging multiplier of 2.0 (normally between 6 and 10 depending on what SpeedStep is doing) with a bus speed of 199.45 MHz, reporting a core speed of 398 MHz. Additionally, it's reporting a Core VID of 0.85V (the Intel website says that the range for this processor is 1.075V-1.175V)

When I boot into the BIOS it reports the CPU to be running at 2 GHz, and using ThrottleStop allows me to bring it back into normal range once Windows is loaded. The computer doesn't seem to boot any slower than before, but once it gets to the logon screen it slows down, which leads me to believe that it's somewhere there that is going wrong, perhaps? I've set ThrottleStop to load at startup, but isn't a foolproof solution and, really, I'd much rather have Windows manage the CPU than have to do it manually.

A second reinstall of Windows has not solved the problem.

If anybody has come across something like this before, or has any ideas for how to begin trying to sort it out then I will be very, very grateful.

A:Intel T7250 2.0 GHz multiplier stuck at 2.0x, Core Speed at 398 MHz

Hi again,

I've tried a couple more things.

Updating the BIOS (to the same version, so reflashing, I guess) increases the multiplier, according to CPU-Z, to 4x, but it doesn't go any higher than that.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the CPU drivers through Device Manager. When the computer restarts it runs to the full 10x multiplier (occasionally running up to 11x, which seems to be a kind of overrun that it's always done). This lasts for a minute or two then it drops back to 4x and refuses to go higher again.

All the while CPU-Z is reporting a VID of 0.85v despite the Intel website, and everything I can find online, saying that the minimum voltage for the CPU is 1.075v.

Using ThrottleStop is having the side-effect of overheating the laptop (because it seems to run at the high multiplier for a lot longer than it usually would) causing it to shutdown automatically at a certain point.

When I boot up the BIOS is still reporting the CPU to be running at the full 2GHz, which is the normal 10x multiplier, and it drops when Windows takes over.

Completely running out of ideas. I've never had a problem like this before with any version of Windows, and the computer was working absolutely fine yesterday.

I guess my next step is trying it with a copy of XP or something, to see if I can try and rule out the OS as a problem, unless anybody has any ideas at all for what to try before doing that?

Thanks again, any help at all is very much appreciated!

Bought a fully-loaded XPS 15 9560 about 3-4 weeks ago and am having issues w/ CPU clock speed, specifically after returning from sleep mode. It will get stuck at a particular ceiling and won't throttle higher, and performance is terrible. A reboot makes the problem go away. Frustrating, as I don't reboot often and like to keep applications running/open while working on several projects, simultaneously.
I'm having a hard time re-creating the issue consistently. It seems to happen most often when I let the PC sleep overnight and return to use it the next morning. I just tried triggering it by going into/back from sleep mode, both plugged and unplugged, and could not make it happen. I did have the problem this morning after leaving it in sleep overnight.
All drivers are up to date, as well as BIOS. I ran the full Dell Diagnostics and everything passed. No malware or viruses, and all unnecessary background services are disabled. It absolutely screams when running properly, after a reboot...no issues otherwise. I'd just prefer not to have to shut it down after every session.
Here's a good description, though I'm not able to re-create the issue the way this person was:
I contacted support but received a very Level 1 Support response (malware, too many background services, etc.) - nothing helpful yet. Will continue w/ them as well.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I upgraded the RAM on purchase to 1GB and im not sure of the full spec (im at work at the minute) I just wondered if anyone had any tips for speeding it up? Preferably cheap ones, though I may look at spending abit of cash if necessary.

Like I said, its an ASUS A6U with WinXP and an AMD processor (cant be sure which one till I get home)

Its at its most irritating when first starting up, when using the net (sometimes) and when downloading. (all of which I know can be down to several other factors. But if people have any ideas I'd appreciate them.

In many cases, slow starting and running of computers is caused by Antivirus and Internet Security programs (including Spyware programs)

What Antivirus program do you have?

Also you could download and run Startup Control Panel, and remove any unwanted startups happening

Note: there is nothing to purchase to speed up your computer. Even an extremely low spec computer (800Mhz 512Meg Ram) can be very fast on the Internet

How do I determine the chip speed for the laptop, and what is typically found on new purchases?

Does the op system matter? I am W2000; I think my co-workers are or have already been upgraded to whatever is more current (I don't even know!).

I have 500 meg of RAM. Does that matter?

A:speed up my laptop

First of all, you should add more RAM. 512 MB is a minimum for XP but 1 GB is more suitable.

You have too many Startup applications loading with Windows and too many processes running in the background. This can significantly increase your Startup time and affect overall performance.
You should definitely trim down your Startup list. Other than your security software, very few applications need to load with Windows at startup.

Click on Start > Run > and type msconfig.

Under the Startup tab, uncheck all unnecessary applications.

For more detailed information, you can also download Autoruns.

Run Autoruns and select the Logon tab.

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, you'll see all the applications running at Startup. Simply uncheck the items you don't need.

Use these three websites to help you decide which items to uncheck:

Simply copy and paste the .exe files you see at the end of your HijackThis log's 04 (Startup) entries one by one.

1- System Lookup (my favorite - for this one, you can paste the whole 04 entry)

2- PC Review - Startup Files Database

3- Startup Applications List

Remember, a lot of applications can be started manually when needed.

A list of names and files will appear. At the end of each entry, you'll notice a symbol:

Y = Normally leave to run at start-up

N = Not required - often infrequently used tasks that can be started manually, if necessary

U = User's choice - depends... Read more

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14 N4050.
The problem is why it stucks in BIOS and cannot go to windows after I tried installing Windows 10 last time. That time the screen showed "there is not complete drivers inside". After that when I shut down forcefully and turn it on back the screen appeared in blue color and saying please call technician.
These happened after I send my laptop to a Computer shop for reformat. Then backed home I downloaded the new Windows 10 OS and after completed the laptop cannot be used. I think maybe the shop that I send my laptop do not put all the drivers. and the result my laptop cannot be upgraded and now cannot use anymore. many files located inside and I cannot take them back. so sad. please help me.

First thing to do is run an extended hard drive diagnostic - the root of all the problems could be a bad drive.
F12 at powerup.
This system doesn't have official support for anything newer than Windows 8 -- though some have reported 10 will install and run (the audio is the part where the drivers usually fail).

A:Laptop has been stuck at this

I was confused that Factory install was Vista , but Boot Logo shows XP as you stated later , so you are running XP now ?
Either way , that error code usually happens within XP and can be contributed to the hard drive or actually booting fully.
Have a look at this other similar post answered by Hamluis previously that fixed the same issue , if it doesnt Post Back.

My mom was updating her laptop and it told her to restart her computer to finish updating. She restarted it and a message came up saying "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Do not turn off computer." It froze and she restarted her laptop again. It went back to the same message and is stuck on it. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

Try bringing up the Advanced Startup Options by tapping F8 as soon as the laptop is turned on.

Then highlight "Last known good configuration" and press <Enter>

Hopefully that will get you into Windows but it won't solve the update problem.
It could be caused by malware so please post on the malware forum as we aren't allowed to help with malware on the non-malware forums.

I feel a bit stupid really :/ I just took out my spacebar to clean under it since it was sticking and barely useable. I proceded to clean it and put it back, but now when i use it it stays down instead of springing back up. It's not really causing a problem (isnt typing repetitive spaces or anything) its jus kind of annoying. How can I fix it?

Thanks in advance

I have an incredibly beat-up laptop that I'm still trying to use. There a external parts missing (a few keys here and there), and the backlight's broken, but otherwise it seems to be in good enough condition.

My current problem is that the fn key won't turn off. It's bothersome when the 'L' key makes the page go down... Any way to fix this?

I was wondering, does anyone know how to manage a laptop's fans? I try to keep my laptop running at full speed (max power setting) and it sometimes gets quite hot, but I'm not sure if the fan is going at top speed. So, any help?

Specs: AMD Athlon II P320 Dual Core 2.1GHZ

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 series
Windows 7 Home Premium

Norton 360

My laptop seems to require frequent restarts before I play any games that require a lot of power (I play Left 4 Dead 2 and Vindictus). I have gone into Services and msconfig and disabled many services/programs that I do not use. I also noticed that I have 4 slots of memory available and only 2 are taken up. Would I benefit if I were to add another 2 or 4 GB of ram?

As well I noticed it said my ram is 667 instead of 1337. Does this mean my ram is only going at 50% of it's max?

I think the computer question actually is: how does the end-user determine the cause or causes for the slowdown, and deal directly with those causes? To begin the hunt, what was changed if anything in the startup & services portions? Program[s] and/or utility[s] was added or removed? Anti-virus/anti-malware shield[s] or operations changed? Windows 10 Prime changes?

Just before the slowdown -- was any sort of PC-fixerupper, tunerupper, driverupdater, softwareupdater, slimmer/trimmerupper, etc. run? I hope not, for such utilities almost always give more long-term grief than any short-term joy.

BTW, I ask about security/monitoring program changes because sometime ago, after I changed something in my set up, slowdown! I had to reverse said changes or tweak and tweak and tweak until smooth operations was restored.

A friend of mine has an old HP laptop that he never uses anymore as it's become slow. I don't think he ever took care of it. I don't think he had an anti virus just an old one that the subcription had run out. I said I will try to clean it up for him and just wondered if someone could tell me what order to do things and what to do. I.e do I run scans first? Updates first? I'm guessing it'll be pretty messed up so where should I start?

A:How to clean and speed up an old laptop

You haven't said what operating system it has.  That might be useful.  If it's really bad, it might be better if you backup all your friend's personal data and reinstall the operating system.
