Microsoft Works 2000 vs Works 4.5

Q: Microsoft Works 2000 vs Works 4.5

I have been using Microsoft Works database function for many years. I am a secretary at a sportsmens club and I have the membership developed in a database that contains name, address, zipcode,ss#,drivers licence # etc.

From this databsae I create labels to be used to mail out our club newsletters. We currently have over 1400 members that we store pertinent information on.

Using the label program in Microsoft works in previous versions such as 4.0 or 4.5 has been a breeze and always worked wonderfully.

We upgraded our computer system and now have the microsoft works version 2000. We were able to load our databse in this version and have been using it quite regularly. We are continually adding to this database daily.

My problem is, I have yet to figure out how to develop the labels for the mailing addresses. You would think this would be an easy process but when I try to do this I get an error message saying I have characters such as periods etc and cannot produce these labels. That would be quite a bit of extra work to remove any of those special characters and before I would do that I would want to make sure if that is really what the problem is. Why would it be a problem in works 2000 and not works 4.5

Right now I have the program loaded on a laptop with works 4.5 just to devleop the labels. I really do not want to convert to using just 4.5 because of the dates that I use in the databse and with the newer version it recognizes dates in the year 2000 and greater.

Why has this become such a chore and that I am unable to do this. I cannot believe that I would need to go through my database and take out any periods etc. I do not have to do that for 4.5 - why would I have to do that for the 2000 version.

I have been playing with this for months and still have not figured out the way to do this so if there is anyone that can help me with this dilemma I would appreciate it.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

On the new Dell PC (XP software) I am planning on buying, it comes loaded with Microsoft Works 8.

My existing PC is running on Win 98 2nd Ed with Microsoft Works 2000.

Question: Is Works 8 capable of reading files that were created on Works 2000?

I recently purchased microsoft works 2000 after having microsoft office. I uninstalled office and put on 2000 because I use a laptop and was trying to conserve space. I installed works 2000 using the least spaced installation. Very few or no templates. The task launcher appears immediately, but to go to any application takes forever. Office was much faster. I can't figure out why. Any suggestions. Thanks Leo

This occurs often when your hard drive needs to be defragmented. Hard drives particularly ought to be defragmented after uninstall/reinstall or after deleting or adding lots of files to the hard drive. Have you defragged?

I recently did a total restore on my computer and have had quite a few problems. I think I have fixed most of them. Except, when I download Works 2000, I get the message after restarting. "Windows can not access one or more required files. The files may have been renamed, deleted, or moved. Try installing works, then starting the process again." Okay, I have tried that and it still doesn't work. I have done it over and over again. And still no luck. I had it on my computer before I did the total restore. So can anyone help?

I had the same problem, but i called my product support number and the walked me through it. Unfortunatly I can't rember all the steps. I know it is frustrating, but they solved the problem in 5 minutes instead of the 5 hours I spent trying to correct it myself. Give them a call! Good Luck!

I have installed Works 2000 on to my PC which is running Win 98 se. The original install worked fine. I had cause to uninstall it and then re-install. However, upon re-installing the following message very quickly appears. " Install was interupted! You may not have sufficient memory or Hard Disk space for the install process to work succesfully or may have an antivirus application running." There is 18gig of drive space available and ample memory.

I'm wondering if there is still components of the first installation resident which are some how halting the re-installation.

I would appreciate guidance on this.

A:Microsoft Works 2000

I notice you did not comment on the third possibility listed. Did you forget to turn off your virus checker before the installation? A good idea with troublesome installations is to close out everything except Explorer and Systray by using Ctrl+Alt & Delete. That process not only frees up memory but turns off any program that might interfere with the installation.

Before I begin, a HUGE thanks to Big-K in directing me what to do with the dll. files! Thanks a million!

Ended up it needed two dll. files. Placed them both in my system32 folder and then the error message came up as something along the lines as "please reinstall to add missing components".

But I can't. Whenever I try to reinstall or unistall an error message comes up toward the end of the loading saying "Setup unable register tasks". Then when I press "Okay" it goes to the installation screen and says, that it was interrupted and my program may not work properly. Then an error message pops up saying, "Fatal Error in Installation".

How am I supposed to fix that?! LOL

Is there no hope for my poor Microsoft Works 2000? =(

Any help with clearing this matter (hopefully for once and for all) is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

PS. When I tried to open the processor this error message popped up: "The application failed to initalize properly (0x0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application." Before that it said something very similar to "cannot find missing files. They were either removed or moved. Please reinstall program to fix it."

I've tried to reinstall it and repair it and unistall it - but then I run into the problem described above.

The new computer did not have 'Word' on it, so I installed microsoft word from the 'works suite' disk I had that came with my old computer. My problem is, I didn't have the case with the CD number on it. I have the works suite (that word is included on) product number, but to open word on the new computer, it says I need the CD number. Does anyone know any way around this? It is not a 'life or death' situation, but it is a book I have been working on. Couple things:
Open Office can read WORD files-- and is a free Office Suite--- download it, use it, give it away---- all legal, all Open Source. Suite includes a wor4d processor that will read and write .doc files (as well as many other formats), as well as including a spreadsheet, and presentation software.

Second option is AbiWord--- another free alterantive to WORD. This is not a full suite, but a great little word processor which can read and write .doc files (& a whole lot more)

good luck.

Quick guess without researching but any time I've received ODBC errors, it usually meant something was corrupt and reinstalling MDAC resolved the prob.
Try downloading and installed <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/data/download_250rtm.htm">MDAC 2.5</a>.

Also, what OS? Could be a restriction on your login.

I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer.  I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.
I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel.  However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish.  I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.
I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC.  However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).
I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem.  I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... Hi there,
I have had this error for about 1 week after I installed/uninstalled several VPN services.
I have "internet access"  on both Local Area Connection and WIFI but, none of my browsers are

settings to get online with Chrome).  On Chromes start page it even shows my name as logged into
GMAIL! (before I switched to the TOR proxy settings.)
Here is what I have tried
Flushing the DNS
release/renew ip
reset winsock
disabled/re-enabled both adapters
Unistalled/reinstalled both network adapters
shutoff the firewall
booted into safemode
removed my antivirus
Ran a few scripts
winsock repair
windows repair (all-in-one) tweaknow
mini toolbox
Run MBAM scan
and MSE scan
Reset IE to default.
Cleared proxy setings.
Re-installed the adapter client, service and protocols,
This is driving me nuts! Its got to be something easy that I am missing!
Any help would be appreciated!

I did not suspect that this was a virus.  But while Google-ing for a solution I came across a post here that resolved the issue. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/511425/virus-scan-failed-in-chrome/
Nasdaq in thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/541399/chrome-reports-virus-scan-failed-on-all-downloads-ie-works-firefox-works helped me remove all the viruses and malware, but I still can’t download with Chrome with the virus scanning turned on.  Nasdaq also believes that there is a problem with ‘Security Center” because FSS.exe run as Administrator cannot report on multiple security features.  The last FSS.log will be posted shortly.
Is it possible to get Chrome to download and scan these downloads?  Or will I need to reimage this machine?

A:Chrome reports Virus Scan Failed on all downloads, IE works FireFox Works

The fact that Internet Explorer and Firefox aren't exhibiting this problems makes me suspicious of Google Chrome being corrupt.
I would try uninstalling Chrome in the Control panel under Programs and Features.
I would then type regedit in the Search programs and files box and press Enter.
When the registry opens click on Edit and then click on Find.
In the find search box type Chrome and then click on Find next.
This should show up as highlighted in blue, right click on this and choose delete.
Do the same with Google Chrome.
Now download Chrome and install it and see if the problem still persists.
Warning:  Do not make any other changes other than those I've suggested.  A wrong change in the registry can result in your computer being unresponsive.
Edit:  I will not download anything to my computer unless I know exactly what it contains.

I did not suspect that this was a virus.  But while Google-ing for a solution I came across a post here that resoved the issue. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/511425/virus-scan-failed-in-chrome/
Based on Chrome support forums suggestions:
1. Even though IE and FireFox can download files I have tried to disable the scanning of download.  via a registry change under MS\policy key.
2. Disable Anti-virus
3. Renaming AVG8.dlls and rebooting.
4. Running Malware AntiBytes
5. Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome.
My futile attempts to clean the machine:
1. I have tried to disable any toolbars (AVGSafeSearch)
2. Uninstall all AntiVirus appliactions.  I found traces of AVG8, AVG9, Advast, and AVG2104.
3. When that failed I loaded MS Security Essentials
4.  Check for multiple firewalls running
5. Installed new copies of IE and Chrome
6. Ran windows update, just to be up to date.
7. Ran SFC /Scannow
8. Ran SuperAntiSpyware
9. Ran Spybot S&D
10. Ran TDSSLiller
11. Ran HitManPro 3.7
The registry has strange random numeric entries that I believe came from a virus.  I am in over my head and need the help of a professional volunteer.

Before I describe my problem, I want to let you all know that this is my work laptop.  My work IT people have already tried a lot of things such as combofix, malwarebytes, restore points, etc for THREE DAYS.  Therefore, I apologize in advance if the work that they did make it more difficult to fix.  I am coming here as my last resort before they reimage my computer.

At the beginging of this week (2/25), I noticed that I cannot access any website via Chrome.  Chrome shows a circle animiation in the upper left hand corner of the window.  I have no problem in accessing the same website with IE.  One interesting observation is that all icons (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Search, etc) show "color" when I bring up Chrome.  This usually mean that they can access their associated services.  Chrome can still access my gmail setting, including my bookmarks etc.  I looked and did not notice any redirection in my proxy settings.

I contacted my IT guys then an they tried every which way possible to fix my problem.  They noted that Chrome would work in "no sandbox" mode but that's not safe.  They said I had some malware infection and they took care of them.  However, even Malwarebytes show zero infection, Chrome never works.  IE never has any problems.

I hope that I can find some help in this forum.  Here is the DDS log.

I'm having a similar problem to Chris Chu - http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/888744-need-help-have-wireless-but.html

I just upgraded from Qwest DSL 1.5 Mbps with an Actiontec GT701 modem to the 12Mbps service with the Actiontec Q1000 modem, set up with just the default options.

I'm having a very peculiar problem. I can see the Q1000's GUI control panel ( and browse the Internet from a computer connected via wi-fi. However, a computer connected viaEthernet doesn't see the web or even the Q1000 control center. A ping from the Ethernet-connected machine times out. However, the Ethernet-connected machine CAN see the other machines connected to the Q1000 - I played an MP3 file from one of the other machines. So the router function for the LAN is working, but the Q1000 doesn't respond to a ping or let me see the external 'Net or even browse to the Q1000's GUI panel.

I've tried this with just one machine connected directly via Cat5 and none of the other Ethernet ports on the Q1000 used. I've done that from two different PCs, using 4 different Cat5 cables, and trying different ports on the Q1000. I've also tried it going through a D-Link switch with the same results from 4 different PCs.
All of these connections worked with the GT701 and the 1.5 Mbps service, but not with the Q1000. We even tried replacing the Q1000 with the same results. (Firmware versions were QAQ01-31.00L.34 on the first Q1000 and QAQ01-31.00L.33 ... Read more

Probably this is something simple in IE7 options/settings but I failed to figure it out.

This is happening on my desktop (am writing this on my laptop). It's failing to connect, with the exception being "secure" sites - https://....

Email is working fine.

PS this happened after we did Microsoft livecare free scan and implemented corrective actions (malware/virus deletions); it then prompted us to reboot, then indicated new Windows updates to install, and then it prompted us to re-install IE7

Microsoft Office 2010 is installed on my PC (Dell Studio XPS8100, Windows 7). Another member of the household has asked whether she can install Microsoft Works 9.0 on my PC, now that her PC is on its last legs. (She greatly prefers Works over Office, for its simplicity and because of her long-term familiarity with Works.) If Works 9.0 is installed onto my PC, would this cause problems for Office 2010, Works 9.0, and/or my PC? If so, are there workarounds? Thanks.

A:Microsoft Works 9.0 and Microsoft Office 2010 compatibility

The official "word" from Microsoft (pun intended) is that Office & Works can co-exist on the same PC.

Provided you do not intend to share documents between Office & Works (ie both suites will be used separately), there are no "workarounds" or special procedures you need to remember when using them.

We have a Windows 2000 computer, I just restarted it, and before it was working perfectly. When it came back on, explorer.exe didn't load, and I can't get the Task Manager up to start explorer. I tried safe mode out in a number of combinations, and safe mode does the same thing, it doesn't start explorer. It's really strange.

Anyone have any suggestions? I could try creating a boot cd or floppy, but I'd have to go somewhere else to make a floppy (no drives here) and I'm not sure if this computer will boot through cd. I'm willing to try though.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

I received an e-mail attachment from a friend who used MS works ME Word to create a document. I am running office 2000 premium with Word installed. Whenever I try to open the file it displays gibberish. I installed an additional text and graphics converter add on for office 2000 that I downloaded from the MS site, but to no avail. Now it just gives me the error message 'Word cannot find the converter Works632'. Can anyone tell me how to open the file?
Thanks in advance.

Try this I don't know if it will work but down load it again, I am guessing you still have it in your email. That way you know you will be working with a clean file. Open word and click on the open folder and in the window that opens at the bottom where "Files of Type" use "Recover text from any file" and see if that will open it. I am using office 98 with office 2000 and that works most all the time.

Do you mean you don't think you're doing it right?

(I don't have Works installed but) it should be something like File > Save As, followed by selecting from Save As Type.

I have office 97 on my computer and am considering putting works 2000. How will this effect my office? Do I need to remove anything first? Will word combine or will they stay separate? I'm lost!

A:office 97 with works 2000

If you know what you're doing, it's fine. Choosing "customize" or its equivalent during the installation will allow you to keep 97, once you create a separate folder for Works 2000.

But expect some problems; I run 97 and 2000 (both office), and from time to time something blows up. Such is life with micro$oft.

Any ideas what would cause this. I have 2 identical windows 7 pc's that I just setup. They are both running windows 7 pro x64. I installed office 2000 small business with sp1. One one machine word and excel will launch just fine. On the other machine, excel will launch but word hangs. I tried starting word in compatibility mode and as an administrator. That didn't work. I lauched it from the run command using the /a and it would start. I looked and there are no startup macros that run. I don't see why it would be fine on one but not the other since they are identical machines with the same config.

I'm using Works 2000 V.5 on 98SE. Want to retain grid lines when printing Also would like to create a custom form- none of the examples are useful.

A:Works 2000 database

I have that version, there's doesn't seem to be that option. As an alternative, try selecting the records and applying left -- right -- top -- bottom borders (via Format -- Border).

EDIT: my mistake ; File -- Page Setup -- Other Options.

By "custom form", do you mean an input form, like Access? Don't know, will look it up.

I use microsoft works suite 2000. Now when i use parts of it , like word 2000 or Task launcher , it says i need to put the cd disk in. But when i do it does not work. It says files may be lost or corrupted. Other programs like database and spreadsheet work fine without putting the cd disk in. What is going on?

A:Works suite 2000

Sounds like something became corrupt. Try doing the repair install of the works first.
