Preferred Solution: Blank icons in 2 apps

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On my Surface 3 Pro, in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 (tech preview), my taskbar icons are blank for any Windows Store apps. The icons are normal for other apps (like MS Office, Explorer, etc...).

I am betting it has something to do with a group policy. But I can't find anyone else out there with this problem. I've reimaged the device, upgraded from 8 -> 8.1 -> 10. Nothing has changed.
When I first got the Surface - it all worked great. I could see the icons fine. As soon as I joined the device to our corporate domain, that is when the problem started happening. I have tried connecting to the internet from home (thinking it was a network/firewall issue at work) but that did not solve it.

See the attached screenshot (it's a screenshot of Windows 10 - but the same thing was happening in Windows 8 and 8.1). It does this for any of the "apps".

Any ideas what group policies might affect this? Any other ideas?

On my ASUS N550, Windows 8.1, my taskbar icons are blank for any Windows Store apps. The icons are normal for other apps (like MS Office, Explorer, etc...).

It was working before and all of sudden, it stopped working! To start with, I thought it was the graphic card driver and I did all the updates but it didnt work.

In case you need to know; my computer is not connected with any business policy, I am just using my hotmail account.

Hello all,

I am new here, although I did come here quite a few times and many times found the solution :-)

My problem is (I am on 1511) that some icons of removed (by powershell) apps reapeared, and there seem to be no way to get rid of them. Nothing I have found had worked (like going to start menu folder and deleting the shorcuts).

Namely it's MicrosoftWindowsAlarms, MicrosoftZuneMusic, MicrosoftWindowsPhotos, and in Apps the name looks like this: @{Microsoft.WindowsAlarms_10.1607.1991.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwems-resource--Microsoft.WindowsAlarms-Resources-AppName-Text}

Moreover, few days ago some "new" apps have materialized - that was a shock........no update, nothing, out of blue I had about 10 unwanted apps in my all apps...............crazy.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Normally I deffer updates by turning the service off and/or metered connection. Now I have left it on by mistake...........still should not install against my will some unwanted apps..........and as I said, no update.....

A:Icons of uninstalled apps showing in All apps

Those left-over icons may be a result of deleting programs instead of using Control Panel, Programs and Features to uninstall the programs. When a program is installed the install routine puts the program files in either C:\Program Files [32-bit] or C:\Program Files for 64-bit or C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit depending upon which version of the OS is in use. It will also create the icons, write support files to C:\Windows or other Folders and create Registry entries so Windows knows how to run the program. The uninstall routine is supposed to get rid of everything associated, don't know if PowerShell can do it as cleanly.

Hi there

If you wish to create easily custom desktop Icons from images captured then you can use the LAST FREE VERSION of ICOFX (It Used to be freeware - everybody seems to be trying to Monetise every possible item now -but the last FREE version is still available and the paid version doesn't really have much to offer if you just want to create ICONS).

Last Freeware version: DiskDigger, Amic Email Backup, Mystic Thumbs, IcoFX, phpDesigner, Xinorbis

@Brink - I added a question in your tutorial about How to create the ICONS for Metro apps as you used Custom ZIP one in your example -- perhaps you could delete the remark or refer to the above program which does it easily

1) For Metro simply open the tile and press PRT SCREEN before the application starts
2) Paste to ms WORD / WORDPAD (Standard comes with Windows enter WORDPAD in the Start box)
3) Use Snipping tool to select a reasonable rectangle of the ICON and save as PNG file
4) Import into the ICOFX program - Will create Icon for you
5) Save as .ICO file
6) Now ready to use in Windows.
Cheers

Run the unhide.exe utility. (i think it has been updated to handle this, but:

After running the unhide tool you may still be missing most of your start menu shortcuts? They can be found in a folder named smtmp inside:

(XP)- C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
(W7)- C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp
These will be there unless you have removed temp files / folders

There might be three numbered folders inside C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp folder. The folders will be numbered 1, 2 and 4.

Inside the 1 folder is a folder named ?Programs.? This folder should be copied / pasted to (using XP) to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu, which will already have a folder named Programs but it is safe to overwrite it since Windows will replace the subfolders without creating duplicates.

Inside the 2 folder are the quick launch items specific for the user. Select ALL of these shortcuts and copy / paste to (using XP) C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Inside the 4 folder are the desktop items that should be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop.

For Windows 7 users, the all users start menu is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and the all users desktop folder i... Read more

Hi everyone,

I have an issue with some icons in windows 10, some of them are not being displayed by windows.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

A:Missing icons in some apps

Are the icons only problematic in the start menu or is the same problem for these particular icons showing on the executable on your C: drive? I'm not in front of my Windows 10 machine right now but if memory serves correctly you can right click these short cuts and select 'more' and then 'open file location'. I wonder how the icons look in here. If they are wrong try right clicking and properties and see if you can change the icon from there.

If the icons look ok in file explorer you could also try to pin the short cuts to the start menu again.

It could also be a problem with the icon cache. One of the more educated gurus might be able to advise better but I believe the default icon cache is set very low by Microsoft. A meagre 500 kb - God knows why so low in this day and age. Sometimes if the upper limit of this is reached it can cause icon corruption. There is a registry edit that can increase the icon cache to more acceptable level. Hopefully someone can back up my ascertion and knows the correct registry path.

Sure, you can. Anything that you "Pin to Start" from another location will not be added to the Apps screen. It only pins to the Start screen.

If you like, you can add and remove items from the Apps screen though. Be sure to read the warning in the tutorial below though.

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite U840W-10J, have had it for around 20 months with no problems until now. Without warning and seemingly at random times, my laptop loses its ability to launch any application. If I select an application icon from the start menu/desktop or a file in a folder, nothing happens. Applications that are already open when the problem hits work fine, if I close them I cannot reopen them. My desktop then goes black and my desktop icons disappear, all except the recycle bin.

I can only restart the computer by either holding down the power key or using CTRL + ALT + DEL. On restarting my laptop it will then work as normal for a time before the same thing happens again. I am running Windows 8.1 and have McAfee Internet Security installed. The problem started about 2 weeks ago.

Any ideas or support would be much appreciated.

Thanks

A:Satellite U840W - Clicking icons/apps - nothing happens

Hi iwan_imp

According to your message the whole notebook problems could appear due to some software/system malfunction... I think that nobody will be able to say what’s wrong with the preinstalled system but you could try to solve the issue cleaning the registry and the operating system.

How?

I could recommend you one, freeware tool called CCleaner… this software was already mentioned in different forum threads and it helps you to clean the registry and to remove the temporal stored files…

In case this software does not help you, try to repair the system using the Windows 8.1 repair solutions: http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2A03ES0000R01.htm
The “Refresh” option could be the key here…

But in worst case, if you would not be able to solve the problem using the “refresh” option, then you could try to recover the notebook using the Toshiba HDD recovery… so “Reset your PC” would be the next possible step…

If you have one you can try a system restore to a time before this happened. You could also try down loading the ISO from MS and doing a in-place repair install. Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums
To do the in-place repair mount the ISO by double clicking on it. Then look for the install.exe and clicking on it. This will repair Windows 10 without you loosing anything and hopefully fixing your problem.

Hello!

I just bought a brand new 23" Asus VH 232H Monitor. My desktop is a Dell Dimension 3000, with a Visiontek Radeon 9250 graphics card, 2.8ghx Pentium 4 and 2GBs or DDR2 ram.

My problem is, whenever I try to open any sort of 3d application, like a game, or even boot Linuz running Compiz, the new asus screen goes black. The secondary monitor in my dual screen setup still works, but anything 3d makes the new monitor shut off, if it's running at a high resolution. However, if I set the desktop resolution on the asus down to around 1024x768, it works, but that defeats the point of having a big monitor. It also comes back to life if I minimize the 3d application. Even if I have the game running on my other screen, the asus goes black.

I assume this is a problem with my video card. I've run Windows Update, and downloaded the latest drivers from ATI and the problem persists. I don't want to spend the money on a new gfx card, but if I have to I will. Could that be the problem?

Thanks for your help in advance.

-Tru7h

A:Brand new monitor goes blank when running 3d apps at high res

Before doing anything else, go test the monitor on a PC that you know to work perfectly. Also, have you ever tested with only this new monitor?
If you can make it work with another computer, or alone, then yes, it's the graphics card bugging out. Nothing you can do to fix it really. Yet, no point buying a 9250, neither can your old machine handle anything much better without a power supply upgrade, and probably a improvement in its cooling would be needed too.

I have upgraded to windows 10 from 8.1 and been using it for the last week now with no problems.
Today, during a mandatory update my pc went blue screen and said it had to restart.
Once it restarted it updated and booted fine.
However after the update I realized that my start menu stopped working.
If I press it nothing shows up. It is the same with my search menu.
Also none of my taskbar icons will work like the volume and notifications.
I have searched the internet and tried all the solutions provided like windows powershell and uninstalling antivirus and restarting explorer but nothing seems to work for me.
I can't reformat and clean install at the moment because it's really inconvenient for me and have some important files and big programs that I can't back up.

Can anyone please provide me a solution for this bug?
Is there anyway I can reinstall the last update again manually?
Or if I revert back to win 8.1 would this problem still persist?
I can't afford to lose anything since I am away and need my computer for work.

Hi folks,
When I booted up my computer this morning, more than half of my desktop icons were missing, the sound didn't work, many apps weren't available (like Windows Media Player), and startup items were missing from the task bar.  A message balloon popped up in the task bar area telling me that spybot had blocked an attempt to add a toolbar.    In addition, my homepage was changed to isearch.fantastigames...but I was able to change it to something else and it appeared to stick.  I looked for toolbar addons and didn't see any unusual ones, but I noted that the default web search was for the fantastigames and the live search was something else.  I removed the live search option but it won't let me remove the web search.  I am able to use my AVG search and it works for the most part, but I have to watch that the isearch.fantastigames....doesn't pop up and take over.  I couldn't restore back to an earlier date either, although I attempted twice to go back to a time I knew it worked.  It went through the process but told me it was incomplete and no files were changed.  I also looked in the add/remove files but didn't see anything that didn't belong.

I have run a full antivirus scan with AVG and also Malwarebytes (5 hrs. later).  I don't appear to have any malicious issues or viruses, and I am using Windows XP.  I ran the RKill and it found no issues (however it did terminate two proc... Read more

I have this issue from today. Filetypes .htm and .html which I associated with Firefox lost their icons. Firefox icon is ok, no any change, and when I change association to Chrome or IE the htm and html receive the proper icon of Chrome or IE. But when I return to FF the icons become blank again.

On Vista I have a shortcut on the desktop to a DOS Program. It's a blank icon and I can't seem to change the icon's appearance. It's a blank icon with the shortcut arrow through it.

When I hit change icon, to choose a different icon,
nothing happens to the appearance of the icon on the
desktop.

I can change other shortcut icons but this one shortcut to the DOS program. Has anyone run across this before?

Thanks,

David

Hello.

I have a MAJOR problem. I recently uninstalled a program and after i re booted, all my desktop icons was white / blank.
Clicking their properties shows where they are located and their target, but they do not run. I can run the software from their locations - though some reinstalled. Like Ableton live loaded and all my settings was gone for it. It also loaded 64 bit when i always had 32 bit running because i have a lot of 32 bit VST.

Everything, even the toolbar ikons are blank. And my start menu is also showing everything in white. Even worse, i could not get online because i could not find Google Chrome. When i did, i selected to send to desktop and it did so - but showing in white like the others and will not run from there.

I recently changed my PC name, but after re-boot i did not have any issue that i found.
I un-installed Protools demo step by step and it has a PACE ilock that needed to be removed. After i did that with Iobit uninstaller it searched for left over issues and found thousands of registry entries and i selected to remove them.

I do not think it was this because i have installed Pro tools once before and after issues, i removed it and tried again (This time) and the registry entries was in the thousands at that time. Iobit has a select tab and everything was from the Pace Anti Piracy that was being removed and unless something went wrong, it was just as it had been when i removed it previously.

I have no idea ... Read more

A:Blank Icons - no program associated with it

This may work but as you stated, you removed thousands of registry items which is problematic.

Try rebuilding the icon cache.

You might see if doing OPTION TWO in the tutorial below may help.

Plus, downloading and merging the folder .reg file in this tutorial.

When I switched on my laptop today most (but not all) of the desktop icons have turned into what looks like a white blank page of paper.

I tried logging out and back in ... no success.

I tried rebooting ... no success.

I googled the problem, and it said I needed to delete iconcache.db and restart ... no success.

Then I found something which said to delete all files beginning iconcache and thumbcache in the explore folder ... no success.

I tried a couple of the batch files available on the web ... no success!

Does any one have any suggestions, please?

John

Hello,

My girlfriends computer is really old, I know it's a pretty old Dell with 1GB RAM; I don't have the rest of the specs in front of me, I'm at home right now.

She has plenty of problems.
First, when she logged on to a username it would just load a blank screen with no icons or no start menu. Of course I would hit Ctrl + Alt + Dlt and then run a new task and type explorer.exe to bring it up.

That solution worked, but I am looking for a temporary solution, so we don't have to keep doing that each time.

Another problem is that now whenever she logs in and selects a username, it instantly logs off and it's a repeating process, she can't get on. That is for one of the usernames, if we choose the second username then it works fine and desktop items show.

For some reason that one Windows XP username is messing up a lot.

I know the smart solution would be to upgrade PC's but unfortunately it's not mine, so I have to work with what they have. Is there anything I can do?

Any tips for speeding it up would be great too. I ran a defragmentation, and I downloaded CCleaner and fixed up the registry and stuff but anything else you can suggest?

Thanks!
