ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen X1C6 Blue Screen and SSD Disappears

Q: ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen X1C6 Blue Screen and SSD Disappears

ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th GenPurchased March 2019 from CostcoBIOS N23ET63W 1.38Windows 10 Home 64 Bit 1903 (problem occurred before 1903 update)All drivers and firmware are up to date using Lenovo VantageSee CrystalDiskInfo below for full SSD details.I've added a Western Digital (SanDisk) 512GB in the open PCIe slot. I'm using this only to store photos, music, etc and no system data or applications. While using my X1, I'll get random BSoD's. The error messages have varied, but all seem to relate to the kernel or OS not being able to read/write to the disk. This has happened at least a half dozen times now and averages probably once every two to five hours of use. It's gotten to the point where I can pretty much predict I'm about to get a BSoD a minute or two before it happens. Apps stop responding, web pages refuse to load, then ultimately even the mouse cursor stops responding. The BSoD appears and shows 0% gathering info. It never progresses. Eventually, Windows reboots the laptop. However, Windows won't load. When I load the Lenovo BIOS diagnostics utility, it doesn't even show the main SSD! The WD drive does still show. Turning the laptop off then on fixes this issue every time and then Windows boots normally. CHKDSK (including full offline scan), SMART, everything I can think of comes back normal. System runs flawless until it doesn't. Anyone have any suggestions or experienced a similar issue before I deal with Lenovo? My next step is going to be removing the WD SSD and see if the problem persists. I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

For some reason, my computer sometimes spontaneous gets hit with the blue screen error page with the sad face on it. This is happening more and more often. What's more, the computer won't start correctly on it's own: it will display "running PXE over IPv4" then say "timeout." Then it will swap to "IPv6." Those two statements alternate as they both continue failing to launch the computer. What I end up having to do is use the physical power button to shut down the computer and then press [ENTER] to open the Boot Up Menu before exiting and THEN I can finally get to the start screen. Has anyone had any similar incidents? I'm not very sure what to do.

Hi Lenovo I have purchased 2 new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (Type 20KH006JMD) in December, and both laptops have problems with Blue Screen after wake up from sleep/hibernate mode. I doesn't happen every time, but very often. Both laptops have been updatede with the latest firmware and drivers, with Lenovo System Update. One laptop have been reinstallede with Windows 10 Enterprise, and the other  has the preinstallede Windows 10 from Lenovo. Is there a known Blue Screen problem with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen ? Regards,Lars

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Greetings fellow Thinkpadders. I received my X1C6 about two weeks ago, and all is well except the fingerprint reader. I am patched up to date according to both Windows Update and Vantage, and that has included two BIOS updates since I first unboxed it. The fingerprint reader does not come back after a sleep or hibernate. That is, if I Restart, I can log in with my fingerprint -- the white LED is on and so forth. But if I suspend and resume, no white LED, and fingerprint doesn't work at Windows Logon -- I have to use my PIN or password. Vantage's hardware scan shows nothing wrong. Any hints or advice appreciated. Serial# PF0YSFED, Product# 20KH002KUS, BIOS N23ET37W 1.12, Windows 10.0.16299 (Build 16299)

Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... My screen is dying slowly, it freezes and turn to a grey color. It happened 10 times already, After I restart the computer, it's back to normal. I feel like it only happens when the computer is not connected to the sector, starting 2-10m after I open the computer. I would like to know if it is a common problem and if there is an easy solution. I have 66 days left on my warranty, I'll probably have to change my computer pieces before.

Hello, yesterday I have put my computer to sleep, but when I tried to turn it on today, the screen did not turn on. The adaptive keyboard works, I can even change the lightning of the keyboard, so I see the computer is "half on", but the screen remains black.I tried to push the power button for 20seconds, push the reset button (which is the hole to the right from fan, I suppose),  put the AC in and out, nothing works. The screen won't wake up. I have updated drivers two days ago (even BIOS), but the computer worked yesterday normally! What should I do? I'm quite desperate as I need it to school. Thank you for any advice.

A:Thunderbolt(TB3) NOT found in device manager for X1 Carbon 6th 2018(X1C6) in Windows 10 (Wx)

I didn't read all of your post, but I assume this is part of what you're looking for.Under "System Devices"Also, AFAIK, the TB3 controller itself is responsible for regular USB-C functionality on those two ports (though not USB-C PD [charging] that is handled by a seperate PMIC). So if the USB-C ports work with a flash drive, for instance, then the TB3 controller is working at some level. Charging is handled seperately (even though they are using the same ports), and I don't remember what the TB3 controller's exact relationship with USB-C DP Alt Mode was, so I don't dare comment on that. EDIT: for clarity, I should note I have the charger plugged in right now, along with an USB-C --> DP cable, driving an external monitor. When I briefly unplugged both devices, the TB3 controller seemed to still be present in the device manager, though I cannot guarentee that's an accurate assessment.

Unit fully charged; worked fine when last shut down. On first power up, screen is snow only, all horizontal lines. The bottom 2/3 of the screen is white, while the upper 1/3 is black.  When left on for a minute, the screen gradually opens to full but changes from white & black color to multiple shades of Gray/purple.  Also, the centre of the screen then develops a vertical line 1.5 cm wide, while the far right hand side of the screen (1/4 from right border back toward centre) shows multiple shades and varying widths of vertical lines.  All the while, the screen is in constant flux, flickering, going lighter then darkening, similar to a TV station going off air when the power goes out.   Looking for any help you can provide.   -- Unit was not dropped, or the screen did not have anything heavy placed on it.  On time out and shut off due to battery saver mode, hitting the enter key to refresh the screen there is no change except, for a brief 1-2 seconds, a greenish, horizontal line, approx 2.0 cm wide, appears at the very top of the screen and then disappears.   Unable to read anything on screen.  Hard power up makes no difference.   Model 3444 CUU  S/N xxxxx.

Hi all, I would like to share my recent experience of Thinkpad X1 carbon (4th 2016) screen brightness problem, and how this problem been solved. The laptop cames good and the F5 and F6 function for screen brightness adjusting is OK. Other methods, like in the setting menu and battery menu,  to adjust the brightness are all OK.After one hour or one day or some short time, you will find you cannot adjust the brightness. Even the battery & power options are not working. The problem comes from the driver. First I thought it is the problem of driver of monitor (wide viewing angle high density flexview display 2560x1440 driver). I uninstall, update, change...but none of them work. Finally, I find it is the problem of intel hd graphics 520 . There is another evidence that during the time only this driver of intel hd graphics 520 has been updated automaticly to the latest version! So I uninstall and roll back to the version 20.19.15.4331 and the problem is solved.I did not check the lates version of this driver. But I am sure that the latest version of intel hd graphics 520 has conflict with the lenovo driver for screen brightness! I am sure there are other people face the same problem after the update of hd graphics 520 driver. Any engineer please check it!

Dear readers, This morning I found myself clenching the rear for all that is dear to me when my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen's Full HD Touchscreen started to misbehave. In this thread I will describe the symptoms and finally the resolvement, as well as log anymore occurences of the behaviour it showed today. The symptomsAfter recovering from sleep on my Linux installation, I had to go back to real work and reboot to my Windows 10 Home partition. During the whole recovery, reboot and log-in process, no abnormalities where observed. A few moments after logging in however (it can't have been more than 20 seconds), my display showed an image like this: (recreation made in photoshop)  I was shocked to the core, however immediately assumed it must have been some kind of Windows 10 problem, and rebooted the system swiftly. The computer did not power off immediately, but merely showed a black screen after Windows said it was "Restarting", and blew its fan to pretend it was actually very busy. After two minutes I forcefully shut it down and waited a couple of seconds before turning it back on. The BIOS screen showed no abnormalities, but as soon as the spinning circles were done chasing eachother, I was objectively horrified by what my lock-screen, and subsequent desktop looked like. Here is a GIF that simulates what I saw: (best viewed on a 60Hz Monitor)   It was quite the shock! To be clear, this isn't software or video output causing ... Read more

Hi Everyone,  I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th (windows 10, 64 bit) purchased last year, and this month it started giving black screen at start up every time I try to turn it on ..  Keyboard lights up and then there is nothing on the screen.  It also made an alarm sound/music for the last few times I tired to turn it on. Once I hold the on/off button for 20 seconds and hit the reset button, the screen goes back to normal, not sure what actually worked since I hit on/off quite many times to make it work.   Any idea what is wrong with it ? When I did the Lenova Vantage scan for hardware, everything looks fine. But it is not normal for the screen to go black on every time I try to turn it on .  Many thanks in advance!

I've just updated my X1 Carbon 3rd Generation to Windows 10. and there are three problems. I'm posting them in one message because they may be related. The Intel Chpset Driver from the support website will not install. It geest as far as the Intel branded installer then says it can't find "setupchipsetx64.msi", even if you browser to the file location.Intel Management Engine 12 appears to install without error messages but every time I run System Update it says it needs to be installed, so either it hasn't installed or it has but System Update doesn't recognise it.The cellular connection option has disappeared from Windows 10 and the Lenovo Wireless Power Settings app. My Sierra Wireless EM7345 appears without error in Device Manager under Network Adapters, it also appears as a GNSS Sensor undeer Sensors, but Windows cannot start this device because its configuration information is missing or damaged in the registry (error 19). It appears in Network Adaptors with a strong signal and is enabled but there's just no way of using it.I have of course installed ALL the updates from th support website apart from the two I've noted which won't install and the two enterprise updates which I don't need.. Windows Update also says the system is up to date. Very disapointing because the 4G adaptor was an expensive option to add to this laptop.

Greetings, Forum members. I recently bought the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th Gen from Lenovo's official website during their black friday sale. However, upon receiving the product and setting up Windows, I was faced with an irritating stuttering in the display. A quick Google search lead me to update my drivers and BIOS (which were outdated at that time). After updating every outdated drivers, I was delighted to see that the amount of stutters has drastically reduced, but still present during some time. Afterwards, I left my ThinkPad alone for one whole week, and was disappointed to see that the problem came back. As expected, my previous effort to update the drivers and BIOS were insufficient to solve this problem. And so, I seek help and advice from the forums. For additional details:- There were no stuttering when booted in Safe Mode. I even tested out different hinge angles and moved the ThinkPad from one place to another, there were still virtually no stuttering.- When not in Safe Mode, the stuttering would usually happen after logging in using the fingerprint scanner. What's more, the screen would not stutter when the computer is sitting still. Once there is just a slight movement, the screen would suddenly stutter.- Using the ThinkPad for half an hour after reduced the amount of stuttering, but it is still present. ThinkPad specs:- BIOS Version: N2HET43W 1.26- Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8265U CPU @1.60GHz- Display Adapters: Intel(R)  UHD Graphic... Hi,While I'm awaiting a reply from their support -- and in hope someone here might be able to help me out.  This mail regards my X1 Carbon 6th gen:1 month ago, my X1 would boot all the way to the Windows splashing screen, and then go fully black (there was no mouse etc), The laptop would still however show signs of life and response (hardware: caps lock led, backlight on/of, etc),  Booting into safe-mode worked, the black screen was gone, however upon rebooting outa safe-mode it once again was. What I then learned was that hooking the laptop up to an external screen worked, although the laptop its lcd stay fully black and powered off. Eventually after hours of trying different things it somehow disappeared (no idea what it was at last that solved it) Yesterday however it returned. What I couldnt do the previous time (being system recovery) I did yesterday, which solved it for 2 minutes. Again, the screen went fully dark. I tried to use said recovery as again, but without success this time:  Eventually I gave up and found peace that I had to completely wipe said laptop. Therefore, today at work I booted the X1 with an clean install in mind: it somehow booted without a black screen.  Then a few hours later the black screen was again. Did the usual troubleshooting, all NOK. So I started wiping the drive (by reinstalling windows) which went well until I got to the part where I could setup Windows Hello. It again went fully dark. After recent updates (early July 2019) through Lenovo Vantage and Windows Updates, my screen color/tone flickers constantly, especially more so when it is connected to power. Here is a video of my laptop demonstrating the flickering: https://youtu.be/FW1WvNMW3FM I have scoured through screen brightness, night light, screen contrast, energy saving options, reinstalled Intel HD Graphics driver, etc etc through control panel trying to troubleshoot it myself but to no solution.  Please help!

I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon and take very good  care of it and keep it in a laptop bag with padding. Today I used it, closed the lid and put it back in my bag. When I went home and wanted to use is I took it out of the laptop bag and opened up the lid and there was a black block at the top left of the screen.  I noticed a crack but is in the inside of the screen and not on the outside and I can't feel anything with my finger or I can't see any scratch or mark. There is a vertical pixelated line from the top of the bottom of the screen. The only thing I can think that could have caused is was when i opened the lid I used the top left corner to  open the screen. All I can think of is that because the lid is so thin and  flexible putting pressure on one part of the lid caused the problem. If there is zero external damage cause will the warranty cover fixing the screen?

I always tell people that it is best to use 2 hands or, at least, to open from the center.  I agree that the lid is thin and flexible.  I suggest taking it to a dealer and talking to a person.  With screen problems, it is best if both parties are looking at the same thing.

I have a ThinkPad Carbon X1 6th gen. Just recently, full screen video keeps minimizing every 10 minutes or so. Is this a Windows 10 issue or a Lenovo issue? How can I fix this?
