I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

WHEN I DAILED UP MY MODEM WOULD CONNECT BUT INTERNET EXPLORER COULD NOT CONNECT TO A SERVER. I REINSTALLED W98 AND IT WORKED AGAIN FOR ABOUT A WEEK. AFTER I DID THIS THE MODEM DIDNT WORK AT ALL, BUT W98 NEW IT WAS THERE AND HAD INSTALLED THE DRIVERS FOR IT, BUT IT COULD NOT DETECT A DIAL TONE. I PRESUMED THE MODEM WAS FAULTY AND HAVE FITTED A NEW ONE , WHICH W98 DETECTED BUT WOULD NOT LET ME INSTALL THE DRIVERS . I TRIED AGAIN THE NEXT DAY TO INSTALL THE DRIVERS BUT IT THEN TOLD ME THEY WERENT THE PROPER DRIVERS. IM SORRY IF MY EXPLAINATION IS UNCLEAR, IF YOU NEED ANY OTHER INFO JUST ASK. I have had an unusual problem with my modem and can not seem to find an answer that will fix it. My OS is a P4 3.00GHz, 512 MB of RAM, 100+Gig HD, with SP2 installed, and running a MS Windows XP Professional. I think that is all the information you will need. On to the dilemma. My wall plug, (yes I am still on dial up because they have not run lines this far out as of yet) namely the phone line is the same one that I have used for the previous units. I have had no problems like this before. When I disconnect from the web, (Lucent Win Modem, which is now Agere Win Modem after the update) the modem re-opens a phone line. It does not dial out or anything, but it is the equivalent of leaving your phone off the hook. When it is plugged in, I have to unplug it in order to use the regular phone line, or in order to have an open line. I have no idea why it is re-opening a line. When I check my phone, it says in use, so apparently the modem is in the beginning phases of dialing up a number, but it never does. It simply leaves the phone line open so if I do not disconnect it, then everyone that calls in obviously will get a busy signal. Is there anyone out there that can explain this odd dilemma and how I might fix it, short of buying a new modem? I am hoping to keep my computer connected to the phone line, like I have in the past, without any problems. Any information will be truly appreciated, and thanks.

Hi guys just wondering if there's someone out there who can actually clear up this problem once and for all !

I bought a Coolermaster 460W extreme power plus PSU from ebuyer. They have sent me the PSU and a EU type cable to plug into my UK wall !

On the PSU it has no switches to select voltage, but it does have a sticker on saying "AC INPUT 230V ONLY"

Am I right, therefore, in presuming that if I took a UK cable and used that with the PSU it would not blow up my house and/or my newly built rig ?!

Help appreciated !

A:EU / UK PSU dilemma

I assume and remember knowing that UK wall sockets give 230 V AC power? Therefore yes, it will work with a UK cable and will not break anything. Or then get an adapter instead of a new cable.

Guys, just days ago I purchased all the components needed to make a gaming rig.Well, most of the components[except my PSU] have been delivered. As I was talking to the guy who is going to assemble my CPU,he gave me a suggestion to use my old HDD with the new one,as it would give me and my family more space to put in new stuff in the new HDD.Well,I liked the idea and told him we would go through with it,but then, many questions popped in my mind as soon as I had finished my conversation with him.Well, first let me give you the specs:-
1)OLD HDD:-Western Digital Caviar Green-WD10EZRX-00D8PB0[ASIN number,I guess] and here is the link http://www.amazon.in/WD-Caviar-Desktop-Internal-WD10EZRX/dp/B00769WETS. Reason,I provided you guys the ASIN number is because when I saw the price of this HDD now,it is 12K bucks....I don't believe I paid that much amount in 2011-12,so check the ASIN number that i got in my devices list in the control panel.
NEW HDD:-Toshiba 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD.Link:-http://www.amazon.in/Toshiba-Internal-Hard-Drive-DT01ACA100/dp/B00A0KXK7U?_encoding=UTF8&keywords=1tb%20hdd%20toshiba&linkCode=sl1&linkId=b476891eb75940ea155299da093c4c89&qid=1481107684&ref_=as_li_ss_tl&ref_=sr_1_3&sr=8-3&tag=curse0d-21.
Now,here are my queries:-
1)I am intending to install win 10 pro 64 bit version[in my new HDD],will it somehow clash with the win7 OS in my harddisk.
2)I just do not have applications installed in the C drive, but also in other drives.Eve... Read more

A:Dilemma of using old HDD in new rig..

3)As the drive is like 3-4 years old[already reached its expectancy],would it be wise to have all the data stored in it?Click to expand...

Any data you want to keep, you make backups. If this is the ONLY copy of said data, you should expect to lose it at some point. ALL drives fail; it is only a question of when the drive failes.
4)As the old HDD is of Western Digital caviar series and the new one is of Toshiba, will they clash with each other?Click to expand...

No.
Here is what I would do;
1 First and foremost, make at least two copies of whatever data you want to keep. Do this on separate media; ie two external drives, two flash drives, NAS, whatever.
2 Build the system and install just your new drive. Do the windows install, updates, drivers, etc, etc.
3 Once completely finished with the windows install, shutdown and install the old drive. Windows will assign the next available drive letter to your old drive ie E, F, whatever.
4 As for access to your old disk, you can edit permissions to make it unavailable to some users.

Your link to your drive on amazon does not work.

I've tried locating the setup.exe on the CD but it says 'invalid command'.

How did you setup the two machines IP addresses? If you let Windows do it, try this.

Setup the machine as follows:

PC1:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

PC2:
IP Address: 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Leave the other settings blank. See if that allows you to connect.

The first one with better timings - for only 3 squid extra, it's an easy choice

Basically they are exactly the same RAM modules, except the CL7's are 'better binned' (higher individual quality) than their CL9 counterparts. Modules that can't tolerate tighter timings / voltages are sold as the 'slower' sets.

I have a customer of mine who is an aged farmer who lives out in the sticks.
The problem I'm having is that he lives in an area that has no broadband and no mobile internet access.
He recently purchased a new PC from me as he has to log his livestocks passports for travel purposes to and from the market. This has now moved to an on-line process hence the reason for him purchasing a PC.
So he has no choice but to use dial-up (which also disables his use of the only phone line he has)
The thing is windows updates are causing his internet connection to time out as the files are so large and this also causes his mail to seize up.
He uses MSE for security, and MS office for a simple excel spread sheet that needs to be updated and emailed. And he has to log on once a day to the internet to check a few things on his livestock sales etc.
Is there any way to disable windows updates for office and windows but allow MSE to update automatically or does he have to update MSE manually each day ? (remember the poor bugger struggles to turn the PC on and for the first month I was there daily to fill in the 10 or so lines into the spread sheet and mail them, but he seems to have got the hang of it now)
I don't mind bringing his PC to my office to do monthly windows/office updates, but I would prefer for his anti-virus to be daily updated automatically as 3 other Farmers in the same area have been infected recently via email so I just wanted to keep the costs down of me going out to ... Read more

A:Bit of a dilemma with MSE

G'day Nick,

I wonder if this might work?

Turn OFF ALL updates, but setup MSE as shown in the image below - setup a schedule scan each morning, and also check the option to run an update of the spyware definitions.

My understanding is that MSE will still update its defintions, as it runs separately from Windows Update.

Hi, everybody. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject I am asking about. As far as I know, you are not able to set up WPA encryption on your laptop in a wifi hotspot(unless of course the owner tells you the router's MAC address and passphrase). However, I was wondering what exactly the WPA does. I read that it supposedly encrypts all the so-called "data" that you send out(specifically for web browsing, downloading, etc.), and makes anyone trying to connect to your computer(and therefore your network) need to input the correct passphrase. If this is the case, isn't there some sort of software that could also encrypt your outbound data in the same way on a hotspot, but without actually setting up an encrypted network between your computer and a router(or access point)? I am guessing that if there is, then it would probably only encrypt outbound "data", and not protect you from people trying to access your computer. I have read about VPNs, TOR, etc., but as far as I can understand, these only try to mask your IP/identity. They also say that they "tunnel data," but doesn't all web traffic have to make "hops" anyway? So how would they "tunnel data," unless that company had a physical line running straight from your computer to their server? I welcome any number of responses on this subject, and I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you very much!

Q: Dilemma

Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/393442/windows-xp-freezes-at-mupsys-in-safe-modeno-administrator-passowrd/ - Hamluis.

Hello Everybody
An old XP PC we were using as a Minecraft server was having a printer driver installed when Windows unexpectedly rebooted. Since then it has been stuck in a boot loop. We get as far as the Windows startup screen then it reboots. In safe mode it hangs at the Mup.sys stage.
We have a Windows XP disc which we always used to use to get back to factory settings and I'm pretty sure we used it on this one when we acquired it but it tries ( I think!) to boot from CD but ends up booting from HD. It would not boot into Puppy Linux from CD so I did a Puppy boot from memory stick.
This worked up to editting the registry as described above but Windows is still stuck in the reboot loop.
I should say that I did ntfxfix on Windows partition 1 in Puppy as advised here: http://www.winhelp.us/recover-files-using-puppy-linux-page-2.html. On first reboot it did do chkdsk before the rebooting loop started again.
What else could I try?
thanks
Les

A:Dilemma

I am quite happy to do a clean Windows install if there is something in Windows I can edit with Puppy to force this. Nothing on PC I need but so far I cannot get Windows CD to run (or Puppy on Cd, that hung up as well hence memory stick used)

This is my dilemma:

Also, I cannot 'right-click' to access any functions associated with that, nor can I use any DOS commands such as Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V to copy or paste. And all drop down boxes are gone. Clicking on hyper links will not load any page in another window.

I have tried writing registry values as found in various forums, deleting other values, changing the binary code to 1 in D-Word entries to make sure that the toolbar menu is active...tried Alt, Alt+Spacebar, Alt+T, or any other combination of keys, and none of them work. A tip on buying a laptop,Buy what you want now and what you might want for hardware later.Becayuse a laptop is not easily upgraded and has strict guidlines as to what you can and can't do. So if your looking to buy a laptop for gaming or video editing or just making letters and such for trips.make sure you buy a laptop that can do that now and suit your needs for the next couple years.

We were given a Pentium II motherboard with the processor and are trying to fix it up as a backup computer. It can run WinXP so it should work out good. The problem is that it came with some memory (PC100) but there are no markings on any of it to say what size they are. I can't decipher what the stickers are trying to say (see screenshots below). I tried to load each stick one at a time to see what it would list them as under System, but one stick by itself and the computer is unreadable (the screen is too fuzzy). Not sure why the memory would effect the video cards resolution.

If I install two of the sticks at the same time then the screen is readable. One stick has "PC100 8x64" on each of the 8 chips, so I figured that must be a 512MB stick. The other stick has no real markings on it. Now here comes the confusing part - when I install the (presumably 512MB) stick with one of the other sticks, it says 96MB under System. How can that be? The smallest stick of memory for this processor is 64MB. How could it possibly have 96MB with two sticks (one if which is 512MB)? Shouldn't it have more than 512MB, if one of the sticks is 512MB?

With the upcoming release of Windows 10 and the fact that Microsoft are allowing free upgrades from 7 through 8.1, I'll be in a dilemma as to whether or not to upgrade as Vista still has a couple of years of extended support left.
I realize I multi-boot so already have 2 chances at it so could theoretically have all 3 boots as 10's - which I would continue to utilize as I am now, for testing different versions of security software.
I'm not a huge fan of 8/8.1 I'm afraid, despite heavy modifications to make it behave and look (mostly) like 7.

I do have Vista & 7 virtual machines but I prefer/use Vista more. As for a triple boot with 7 I'd say go for it. I once had 6 versions of windows installed on 2 hard drives so it can be done. Like you I can't stand 8. I'd have to buy it and not even a free upgrade to 10 would encourage me to get it.

Hi,

Having thought hard buying a new PC to upgrade my existing one I have come to two choices. Each one has exactly the same spec apart from the processors. One is an Athlon 2200+ and the other is Pentium 4 2.2Ghz. Both have 512mb of DDR memory.

The thing is is that I've heard the athlon 2200+ performs much better than the pentium 2.2 even though it runs roughly at 1.8Ghz. I even seen the 2.2 Pentium being compared with the Athlon 2000+ which makes me think that the 2200+ is far better than 2.2.

Help I'm a bit confused about all this!!!!!

I was hoping if anyone could help me decide which is the better one and to tell me if I'm talkin rubbish or not!

Thanks
John

I wasn't sure where to post this, but since it's mostly about my lusting after Synthetik's Studio Artist software, I decided to post it here.
Digital art is basically my life. I know, I should get a life, but I love it, and over the past 10 years, I've accumulated some great software for Windows, including
PhotoShop
Corel Painter
PaintShop Pro
Gertrudis
Virtual Painter
Buzz Pro
ArtMaster Pro Gold
PhotoGraphic Edges
etc.,

I've always had a pc, and my current one is set up nicely with 2 monitors, a CRT & an LCD, and it works great with the software sliders and palettes on one monitor and the canvas on the other.
But darn it, Studio Artist is only for Macs, and..........it's AWESOME!

My computer is 2 years old, and though it's running great, I'll be needing a new one before long. If I decide to switch and buy a Macintosh, then none of my other software will work on it. I've considered an emulator on my pc, but I'm much better at digital art than at tech support stuff, and from what I see, emulators have a ways to go.

I keep hearing how Macs are the choice of many digital artists, but I'm not sure why, since I know nothing about them. I thought about buying a PowerBook with Studio Artist and using it here beside the pc, but I would need my Wacom tablet, which is connected to the pc.
I know there are bigger problems in the world, but I seem to be stuck. Any helpful suggestions would be welcome.

Before going in to the actual topic at hand remove from your mind the likes of DX11 (I don't have any DX11-compatible games yet anyway). I'll be putting together a new rig sometime later this year (probably around Christmas time) and by then Southern Islands will be on the market, so I want to upgrade my aging 4870 for, get this, two 4870 X2's for the price of one 6950 (1GB). It sounds a bit backwards I'm aware as I can't think of a way to explain it...at least not the way it's making sense to me. In any case anyone know of any places other than online auctions where I could find X2's (preferably two, but one will suffice) for around or cheaper than I've found them?

Oh, the price of the auction I'm mulling over is $225. The single X2's are around $150-180. For the single cards it makes more sense as I can't think of a single card that's faster for the price.

A:Moral Dilemma...Or Is It?

I'm not really impressed with the 6XXX series, but they do scale better than the 4XXX series..... That said if you get the 4870X2's they may or not work well with your games... resale value will be low and worse when the 7XXX's come out. Depending on your game(ie GTA4) you will not see much improvement due to CPU/hard drive bottleneck..... maybe instead a single 4870/4890/4870X2 with your existing 4870? At least till something new catches your eye

Have you considered the 5XXX series? Prices should fall soon....

Hi,
I've been trying to learn to upgrade a laptop, so I got my fathers old laptop. He says if I can fix it, he'd like to use it to get online. Anyway, the thing is my brother in law called himself fixing it and messed it up. somehow, it won't boot from any drive except for C drive. I doesn't acknowledge the floppy drive, and the CDrom, it acknowledges, but won't boot from it. I've been trying to get to the BIOS screen but when it comes on, it goes straight to windoze, even when I push pause. Oh it'll stop, but it will just stop until I let it go on to windoze. The laptop is an old Toshiba Satellite 205cd with 100mhz on it and 24mb of memory. I figured I could bump up the ram some and change out the drive but... I think the guy did something to the BIOS or.... well, if anyone can help, I'm all ears. Thanx! The triforce is with you.

This is an Australian Silicon Chip project that I have successfully built, but I'm intrigued as to why this device -- connected to my local area network -- cannot be PINGed successfully nor is it visible in 'My Network Places' (WinXP Home Edition with SP3) yet the website partly developed on the 4 GB SD card plugged into its socket on the WIB's printed circuit can be fully accessed via any of the three browsers I have tried (IE8, FireFox and Chrome). What I would like to do is be able to amend/add files/folders on/to that SD card and I thought that if I could see it in My Network Places I would be able to do that, as an administrator.

Maybe I'm expecting too much with this and I realise, of course, that this is not a typical computer problem. .

The WIB's IP address, by the way, is 192,168.0.34 and is included in the Gateway.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi All.

I am so sorry for being a pain, but I am trying to rid my computer of malware, and was following the instructions well until almost at the bottom of the sheet of instructions and was told to back up my files onto a dvd. Okay, I chose the free Vista program suggested here and proceeded to follow instructions to back up. I was told the dvd needed formatting first, so pressed format, and that was almost 3 hours ago. It is still trying to format and warning me not to remove disc or turn computer off. I am sure something must be wrong. Please can any of you tell me what to do now having gone this far? which has already taken me through the wee small hours and I am shattered and stressed.

Thanks in advance,

Maureen.

A:Please can anyone suggest a way out of my dilemma?

Hi again.

Just to let you all know that I ended up turning off the PC, and everything does appear to be okay now thanks. Off to find out how to format in a quicker way now.

Kind Regards,

Maureen.

PS A great site. Well done to all involved here.

Being accursed with a best buy gift card of ~$75, I chose to peruse their selection of CD/DVD RW, since my desktop lacks one. Unfortunately, their variety is meager; a HP 1260i and a LG GH24 are the only internals among the plethora of externals. Both have similar price, ratings, and + & - CD/DVD compatibility, which most are superfluous to my needs. The LG, however, has lightscribe, which is superfluous as well. I haven't had enough experience with either company's hardware to winnow the choice to a singularity, so hopefully you guys might know. On the other hand, should I look elsewhere if both prove to be inferior? Thanks for your consideration.

A:Internal CD/DVD RW dilemma

Good, but loaded question. I'll try to address some points.

I've never seen or heard of any DVD burner having any problems reading/writing cds. So if that was of any concern I'd dismiss that.

Not sure if HP builds their own or if they rebrand others (likely rebrand, but I don't know), but LG drives IMO are pretty decent (I actually had one die, but I've known several other people that swear by them). HP pretty much started or was a frontrunner on Lightscribe though, and I think if you plan on doing any of that having an HP drive might be better. I recently saw a video review of an older Lightscribe drive (one I have) and apparently, at least for CDs, the media you lightscribe onto makes a big difference in the quality.

$75, if either of those drives (I didn't check BB) are close to using up your gift card, maybe you should spend the money on bluray disks or something. You can buy a cheap burner from Newegg for less than $30 that will work great. Maybe spend the gift card on the lightscribe capable disks which are expensive everywhere.

My system is Windows XP with SP2.

When I right click on my desktop, then click "NEW", I can create a new
folder, Wordpad, Rich Text or Text documents and I can open several
programs. A photo editing program I use nearly every day is not on
the list, yet a similar program I seldom use is on the list.

On my old 98 system, all the Works 4.5 documents were on the list;
database, spreadsheet, etc. I want those on the XP list, but Customer
Service says it is not possible to add or delete anything from that
list. I have asked several different Cust. Serv. people and they all
say the same thing, but they can't tell me how those programs got
onto the list. Those two photo editing programs are ones I have added, so
they are not part of the Windows XP system that came pre-installed.
The logic (or non-logic) of it escapes me.

So the question is, can that menu (or whatever it is called) be edited?
BTW, what is it called?

Hi... I am looking to get the T460p because it's lightweight, has 2K screen and Quadcore.  However I've still wondering if I should get the SSD and RAM from Lenovo.  Been reading a bit about the different types of SSD and RAM and also the type of SSDs and RAMs Lenovo uses for the T460p.  It's only making me more confused.  The laptop is for heavy Photoshopping and video editing. The three scenarios would be, do I get:  512gb Sata SSD (US$180) and 32gb 2133 (US$195) from Lenovo  or256gb PCIe SSD (US$115) and 32gb 2133 from Lenovo orCheapest 1T Sata SSD (US$200) and 32gb 2400 (US$150) from Amazon? I'm confused because the 512gb SSD Lenovo uses is similar to the Samsung 850 Evo.And the PCIe is actually Sata Express. Is the real world speed that different?  Or should I save the trouble and get everything from Lenovo? Please advice!  Thanks!

I have recently installed a Linux Samba file server on my home network. All is well with it. All "obvious" settings seem to be correct.

Hi,

I could really use some direction on this dilemma. So I am here to explain the situation and hopefully as in the past I will receive great assistance from this forum.

I am in an area where high speed is NOT available and I am currently using Bell dial up!! I will do whatever is necessary to have any association with BELL removed from my home. Bell has instituted a version of Hotmail called Bell Mail. This is attached to my ISP with my Bell email account. I also have Windows Live Mail that I use as my mail program. Both have the same email address. The reason I use the resident email is due to the fact that I belong to a number of committees and I need to retain the email correspondence in separate folders I have created.
I was told that I cannot transfer these folders from WLM to a web based email? I can however as of today create new folders in Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo etc. I really do not want to maintain two identical email platforms! As it is now with Bell Mail all of my mail first comes into Bell Mail and then when I sign on to WLM it downloads to that program. I am constantly maintaining the two platforms! I have no idea on how to cancel the Bell Mail account?

Bottom line here is that;

What mail program would best suit my needs, Web based or resident?

Is there a way to transfer my current folders and contacts from WLM to a web based email?

What dangers are to be considered in having all of the detail stored on a web based email in the event of a crash. I know I ... Read more

Ive recently replaced my router and modem due to internet problems (Getting disconnected every 15 minutes, losing connection for 2-3 hours - even power cycling and resetting didnt help)
I have a wireless router, ive been using it for almost 2 weeks now, and the new modem for 2 days, and there is a big improvement.
Now though, i have wireless internet but cable internet doesnt work! i have 17 computers connected, and when i connect the cable from the router to my laptop - it works, but when i connect it to the hub to be distributed, there is still no internet!
Can the hub be the problem? Im not sure if it is the hub, because we can still play LAN, and computers can still see each other, its the internet that is the problem...
(Every IP and DNS is manually configured)
Thanks!

A:Network Dilemma

I don't know your level of sophistication so bare with me if i say something outside your knowledge base (higher or lower).
First off, make sure you bought a router and not an access point - I suspect you did if the computers can network through the LAN
Second, make sure the modem is being plugged into the WAN port on the router and not a LAN port.
Third, try connecting and resetting both the router and the device
Forth, log into the router settings via the router IP (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1), and configure the WAN settings to reflect your specific service provider.

I've just formatted the hard disc on my old Dell Latitude D600 and re-installed Windows XP. All went well until I tried to set up an internest account and discovered my Network administrator driver had gone. I went to device manager, found that a number of other drivers had also disappeared, so went to Dell Support (on another PC) and downloaded all the drivers indicated for my service tag.

I went back to the Latitude and tried to install the drivers through the device manager, but got the good old "Windows can't open this file" message. I've tried to install via DVD and also by copying the driver files to the Lat's C Drive via USB, all to no avail.

The files are called "click once application" files and, if I click on the original downloaded file (on the second PC) they open. I'm flummoxed--why would the files act differently and what do I need to do to install them in the Lat?

Thanks in advance

A:Driver Dilemma

i am a bit confused at what you are doing. so are you just copying the driver files from one computer and trying to put them on another or are you using acutal driver install disks?

if you are just copying them then it is most likely not working because you do not have all of the driver (due to the keys being made in the registry). your best bet is to download each on from the internet if you can. if they are dell drivers you should be able to get them from the dell website or failing that there other manifactures that made the parts you need drivers for. this way you will know you have up to date drivers that are not corrupted and should be openable by your computer

hope that helps

Hey guys
I recently installed Win 7 Pro that I got as a student. It is the upgrade version. Everything went smoothly.

I want to upgrade my HDD as the old one is too slow. Is there anyway I could install it on the new HDD seeing that there would be no operating system to upgrade and thus it won't accept the upgrade Key. Also I used the key once, would I be able to reuse it with the new install?

Thanks guys

A:Got new HDD, installation dilemma

Welcome to Seven Forums, mackdaddy187.

See this tutorial and the note under Option One - basically, you CAN install to a blank HD - Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

If there is a problem activating it, just call Microsoft and tell them what you did. They will be able to give you a new key.

Hi Folks

Haven't been here lately but I know there are a lot of smart people who might help me with a curious problem. I have Comcast "Blast" internet service and all last year my average download speed was 30MBs. Starting in January it went down to 10MBs on my "main" desktop and on a second desktop also connected to the router. Both IE & Firefox give the same results.

I have a second hard drive in my "main" computer and when I boot to it, I get the 30+ MBs download speed on IE & Firefox.

I have a wireless laptop which gets 35MBs on both Firefox and Chrome. The operating systems are Win 7 on the "main" computer & laptop and XP on the secondary desktop.

I've done scans with Malwarebytes and my Kaspersky Internet Security 2012. I've disabled ad-ons in the browsers for the slower speeds. Any ideas why I'm getting these results which just started after the first of the year? And why the same computer has different results based on which hard drive I boot?

Thanks for any input.

A:Speed Dilemma

Problem solved. The issue was caused by my adding RAM to my Dell XPS which can handle 24GB. I went from 15GB to 18GB but I didn't know Win 7 Home Premium could only handle 16GB while Win 7 Ultimate can actually handle 192GB of RAM. The fact I had too much RAM for Home Premium caused the slow speed while the Ultimate still showed a fast speed. I went back to just 16GB of RAM and all is well.

I just thought I'd report this in case anyone else has an issue which could be caused by too much RAM for the OS on a computer - who would have thunk [sic] that?
