I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Go into your BIOS and verify that the hard drive is listed as the first boot device. If it is, it sounds like your mbr is corrupt, or your hard drive is damagedI'm still learning Vista, not quite sure if fixmbr is the same or not. Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel Pentium DualCore @ 2.80 GHz, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 650GB HDD SATA2, ATI HD 4770 512MB DDR5 Graphics Card, American Megatrends Inc. 0502 BIOS. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

First, i restarted my stupid computer
Then, i got that grub error.
I happily fixed that.
However, when I restarted it again,
I got stuck at black screen with stupid blinkking white dash.
So I use the Recovery Disc thingy
And i clicked that first option.
Then it says, something like
unable to fix it.
Then it says that the stupid missing boot thingy is missing.
Googled for solution.
Tried those command prompt like
Fixmbr or scanos
(it says theres an installation
I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)
Remove hardwares (wait whats a hardware is it those usb thingy?)
Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.
So any suggestions or explain with more detail?
Because I have no idea about these computer stuffs.
Help me !

My computer is about a year old now, built by me and my dad. Recently it's been having some issues though-- for a while I think it was over heating, causing it to reboot. At least I hope it was just overheating. One time when I booted up my computer it told me overclocking failed, which was odd because I hadn't messed with any of the settings (all still defaults).

But heres the major issue: If you boot it up, after the BIOS it'll give you a black screen with a blinking underscore up in the left corner. If you're quick enough you can get it to go into safe mode, etc. You can also choose which drive to boot from--- I found that it only gives you the black screen with certain drives. But, I did notice that its very slow when you have the "loading" screen for windows-- it'll slowly fade in and start loading, then it goes to a normal speed.

Specs:
IntelCore2CPU [email protected]
Nvidia 8800 GTS (640 MB)
4 GB RAM (although I can't use it all...)
Don't know much about my mobo except its a P5K

A:Black Screen + White Underscore in Upper Left Corner

I could be a memory issue. Try removing RAM one stick at a time and seeing if any of them are causing it. Then try them individually in each slot. It could be the motherboard if only one slot is faulty.

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.

Dear mods, I have noted a faint white dash (about 3 inches) in the middle of my P51 Screen which appeared a couple of days back. It looks somewhat like a stuck/dead pixel case. As possible solutions, I have tried the following : i. Battery Drain for 30 mins, and re-checkii. Disable/Enable the Graphic Card Provided that there are no easy solutions, I wish to know whether the replacement of screen of my product (which is still under warranty) will be covered or not? Regards,B.

Hi.

I have a problem with my computer that started about a month ago. The computer hadn't been used for about a month.

Most of the time, probably 19 out of 20 boots, my screen displays a black screen with a white underscore in the top left hand corner before i get to the BIOS. This is before any manufacturer logos appear. It is the usual flashing underscore which has obviously frozen.

I have re-seated all hard drives, my graphics card, removed all cables from my PSU and plugged them all back in again. Problem still existed.
I then unplugged all hard drives and tried to boot and the same problem happened again which rules out HDD failure.

It's going to be a problem with the PSU, graphics card or motherboard but i don't know which.
Before i start replacing parts, does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Like i said, it doesn't happen with every boot. Once the computer is on, it works perfectly. Putting the computer to sleep rather than shutting down has been working for a while which is how I've still been able to use the PC.

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

Hi,

I have an issue with a white rectangular box appearing in the top left corner of my laptop screen.

It covers the icons behind it and renders them 'unclickable'.

Nothing happens if the box itself is clicked on.

It does not stay on top of other windows, just the desktop.

It appears after the laptop has been to sleep and on occasions, just seems to appear randomly.

I believe it may be a problem with Display Link drivers i use for a universal adapter for multiple monitors. I have asked around on display links forums but i am yet to find a solution (updated all drivers, uninstalled, re-installed, etc.), so i thought I would ask you guys if you have any ideas.

Other places i have found similar issues:

I have attached a screenshot of the issue.

I just recently rid my laptop of viruses with the help of boopme. However, I'm having some issues when starting it up. 3 things will either happen:
1)Stay stuck at the "Compaq" screen
2)Go passed the "Compaq" screen but then to a black screen with a blinking dash at the top left corner (If I wait long enough, like 3 long minutes, Windows 7 will eventually start up.)
3)Or go passed the "Compaq" screen, to the black screen with dash, but eventually instead of starting up, it will say something like "Operating system not found"

A:When I restart, it still goes to the black screen with the dash for like 3 full minutes

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with an upgrade to windows 7 from vista. Yesterday my computer was really slow so I reset it to try and speed it up. I got passed the Vaio screen but then came the black screen with the blinking dash on the top right corner. The only thing I can enter is BIOS with F2 nothing else works. I can't enter safe mode or anything else. I've tried a few things, but nothing works.

1. Reseting default values in BIOS
2. Removing everything but internal Hard Drive in boot menu.

I have a windows & start up disc

3. Ran Startup Repair: Says couldn't detect a problem if recently attached device then remove it. ( Nothings Connected)
4. System restore ( was successfull but still no go)
5. Ran chkdsk & chkdsk/r from command prompt option

I also contacted Sony Support and with the 15 minutes alotted

6. Reseated memory

I just want to be able to get into the computer one more time so I can transfer my music and some other important files to my External Hard Drive. Please HELP!!! Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

So I just got my new Dell studio xps 16" laptop on Saturday. I reinstalled using my own Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit disk and have had absolutely no problems.

However today, I noticed that there is a single bright white pixel in the top left corner of my screen exactly at the (0,0) position.

It seems to only show up on the desktop, because running pictures over the corner where it shows, it does not show up. I also have run several programs to check for dead pixels, and it does not show up.

I know it is not a dead pixel because it shows up in a screenshot which I have included.

My video card is the Radeon 4670 1GB.

I have found a few threads online where people have the same problems but none of them really gave any soloutions.

I have found that if I terminate the wdm.exe (Windows Desktop Manager) process it disappears. However, that stops my window peeking from working.

Another thing, it does not appear right after I log in, maybe about 10 seconds after windows has loaded.

Any ideas?

hello, Hoping you can help

I have a Asus running Windows 7.. recently its been lagging quite a lot..
a week ago I started having issues even just getting to websites like Youtube, and it would freeze up..
I ran a disk cleaner, defragment (which said only 3 % fragmented). I also ran 2 virus scans. both Microsoft Essentials, as well as Malwarebyes cleaner..

last night again I was lagging horribly.. when I checked My Computer. it showed my C Drive was in the Red, and veryyyy near full. Yet my Partitioned D drive showed near empty..

This morning I rebooted the laptop.. as soon as it powered up to show *Asus*. from that screen it goes to a black screen, with a dash. that's all I get..

Ive tried to remove the battery and unplug.. nothing seems to help.. im at a loss. Im hoping to get into the lappy to I can transfer and delete filoes from C drive..

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

?? Is My laptop dead in the water?? or can I fix this..

English is not my native language, but hopefully I can explain this well enough despite not knowing the technical terms.

I have been googling like crazy trying to figure out what this can be, but to no avail. It started after the Windows 10 anniversary update and it might be related to either chrome cast or spotify, as after resetting laptop to factory settings I did not see this problem again initially until I started using these again. However, when the white square pops up can be completely unrelated to using these, and uninstalling Spotify did nothing.

The white square isn't always visible either, but is still there as a large unclickable area. If I right-click on it, a menu comes up that says back forward and reload, but clicking these does nothing. The only way to get rid of it is to restart, but it will come up again pretty soon. Any ideas?

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

Not sure what this is, but it won't go away. I've tried shutting down & re-start, ( still there ) i've checked in task manager to see if any application process was running ( nothing ) & then i did a Mc Afee scan that said 1 file infected & 1 file fixed. But the black window is still there. Only thing i've downloaded was free mmo game, that i've been playing for 3 days with no problems, but when starting the game Mc Afee window comes up saying "[game name] wants to make changes to you compter" so i click the allow once & game loads i start playing. Not sure if that's just a coincidence or bad timing, but i'm stuck & could use some help. Another strange thing, when i did a prt screen, the black window did not show up on the image so i used a phone to take the snap. Os is windows 7 64 bit.

Ok, let's run one more malware scan just to be sure, but I think something was changed in the registry. Maybe a System Restore to a date before the game was insyalled will help. I f these don't help we'll ask in WIN7.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab... Hey guys I have a Song Vaio RBG-53 (I believe) with XP. I was using google images when I clicked on a picture and got a fake anti virus pop up. It wasn't the normal one I've seen quite a few times so I alt f4 closed it and immediately ran my AVG virus scan. That found nothing so I ran Malwarebytes which found 4 infected files. Two were in the registry and two were in my temporary internet files...I believe. Then I had it remove them and it said I needed to reboot to safely remove the files. I did that and when the computer started back up, it showed the initial Sony Vaio screen and then it goes straight into a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. The fan in my computer will run pretty loudly for about a minute and then slow back downto normal. At this point I'm not able to do anything. None of the F keys do anything. I tried ctrl alt del and that has no effect either. I can't get into safe mode or recovery console or anything like that. I've been researching google for the last hour on this and all the fixes involve just going into safe mode or using a repair cd, which I do not have. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi, Before anything, I would like to apogolize for my bad English, I?m like so many french guy bad at other languages ! I got a problem with my Thinkcentre 7635-W1n. It?s a computer I bought with W10 OEM pre-installed on a HDD. However, I wanted to replace this HDD by a SSD. So when I receive the computer I make the replacement and I erase the HDD for using as a save HDD. After create an USB boot with Rufus, the screen displays  Error 1962, no operating system found . After many tries :Convert the SSD in GPT format and create an USB boot UEFI compatible (yes, I was able to use Gparted from live USB) ;Change thing in the BIOS : but there is no thing about Secure Boot/Legacy in the settings. But this recent tries don?t lead to boot on USB. Now, after try booting on USB, I have a white dash sign in the top left corner. I read that there is a problem with the Lenovo with an OEM OS but can?t find the solution myself. Thank you for reading my post and have a nice day

I got my Radeon 6570 today and I installed it, but now Windows won't boot it just gives me the blinking white dash. So I removed the card, switched back to onboard from BIOS and it still didn't work. I tried a lot of other stuff but it didn't work so I reinstalled Windows with the graphics card removed (Hoping it would reinstall the drivers for the onboard video) it didn't. So then I tried booting from an old Linux disc I found and it worked (how I am typing) but Windows still won't. Any help? I ran a diagnostics text and everything is working, and I can even access all my personal files on my old Windows install from Linux so I know that it's active.

check inside your case for connections to your harddrive. also check your bios boot settings and see if the os drive is first.

Use Vista DVD or the HDD recovery partition to boot into Recovery Environment.

Hi, I have an Acer laptop - Aspire 5315-2470 and when my son turned it on it goes to the Acer screen and then goes to black screen with cursor in the left hand corner.

I have tried to reboot in safemode but all I get is beeping noises. I also read in the manual on how to restore the computer back to day one we bought it, by holding ALT and F10 upon turning on . All I get is the same beeping noises.

This computer is only 1 year old , so if someone can give me any advice on how to fix this I would be very happy.

Thanks In Advance...

Look at your BIOS settings. The Acer screen may tell you how to access the BIOS (boot) settings with a function key - probably F2. Press that F2 or whatever it tells you when the Acer screen comes up. When the BIOS screen displays, make sure the "boot from" setting is your hard disk. If not, change it.

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this question. My daughter was using my MSI laptop and when she tried to start the computer all that came up was a black screen with the cursor in the upper left corner. She selected the restore option which came up because the other options would not do anything.

Is there any possible way to recover my files, pics, etc. or is it just gone now? I'm really upset because I had five years of photos of my grandchildren. =(

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

It's not booting to your Hard Drive. You can set the boot order in your BIOS. It is either F1, F2. Delete, F5, sometimes F10. HP usually uses F10, try that first.

Then set your boot order as follows:

CD/DVD first, Hard Drive second, then it does not matter after that.

Also, in your BIOS you will be able to see if your Hard Drive is being detected, if not, try unplugging the power and Data cables and plugging them back in, HP's are notorious for dropping the Hard Drive, you have to buy new SATA cables constantly. You may need to do this.

I have seen this problem once before [posted in a different forum on this site] but it was a problem someone had on a laptop and it was for Windows XP.

I am using a desktop PC [Windows 7- HP] in a nutshell.

Anywho...The Problem.
I was minding my own business, listening to music and editing on a photoshop program, when suddenly my computer shut off on me. So, thinking that I might have accidentally pressed the power button with my leg, I restart it. Only to get a black screen with a little white flashing line at the top left corner of my screen.

I've heard people say to try to load it in Safe Mode. But I honestly don't know how to do that with Window's 7. I'm at a bit of a loss really. I've tried numerous things. I'm close to giving up...and so I'd really really REALLY appreciate any help given. I have a lot of files and etc...on this thing, and I really don't want to hear that there's nothing that can be done to retrieve them! :(

A:Help: Black screen with flashing line at top left corner

Press F8 at boot time to get the mneu and choose safe mode.

Try connecting it up to a different monitor and see if the results are the same.

Bit of a long story but here I go.

I have 2 Radeon 6950 with the crossfire thing set up, it's been working well for over 2 years.

Over the last few weeks I've been having issues, mostly while watching videos (usually HD and/or full screen). The video will freeze, the audio will loop, then eventually the screen goes black and I get an error message saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered".
Sometimes it didn't recover and I have to turn the computer off.

What's now happening is it will freeze at the windows start up. Then after resetting I will get to windows in very very low resolution and in black and white.

So I 're-seated' the cards. I couldn't notice any obvious damage to it except the fans were very dusty so I cleaned them.
Boot it up and I still get the black and white.
I checked the device manager and it said one of the cards was having problems, I uninstalled both drivers from that menu (not quite sure if I should have done this) and for whatever reason it's now working.

However it now seems one of my cards is not being recognised. Only one display adapter is shown in the device manager and AMD catalyst only recognises one card too.

What's the best course of action to determine what's wrong with what card (still not quite sure which one it is).

Hey guys, here I am again with another failure.
Today morning I woke up to my windows refusing to boot. It just does the white dash blinking in the top left corner (it jumps down a bit at first, then just keeps blinking endlessly). I'm aware that this can be a result of a poor shutdown or a crash or modified system files or program installation, or whatever. The thing is last night I was using the computer fine and I didn't install anything, modify anything, and it shut down correctly (as far as I know - after I clicked shut down I shut off the monitors and went somewhere else, and just when I came back it turned off so I assume it was fine).

I've tried a number of things already. First, I'm booting from an Ubuntu CD right now and my files are all fine and intact on the C:\ drive. Second, I tried running my Windows 7 CD to go into the recovery system and tried a bunch of things.

The recovery thing doesn't detect my operating system, first of all, but I've had this issue before. I remember that I got it to work somehow, but I don't remember how. I think it might have been a disc that I burned with a modification that allowed it to detect the system (I used some tutorials over at sevenforums.com, can't remember which ones now though). I'll look for the CD, I might have it somewhere.
EDIT: I found what I presume is the CD but it doesn't even want to boot. I'll try looking for whatever I found before and make another one, I guess. But if I could get it to det... Read more

A:Help - Windows won't boot, white dash blinking endlessly.

From what you have written, this should be impossible but I suggest you to press F8 right before booting into windows, and select 'Use last known good config'.
This issue sound really hopeless, but if you could manage to boot into any windows which is on another partition (if you have any), you could rebuild the MBR manually (master boot record) which stores the OS information.
Do you have another disk/partition?
If yes, the best would be to install W7 on it (takes 20mins) do the above things (I will explain it further if you have another partition) and then boot back into your original OS and would be able to delete the 'blank' windows 7 installation files from the orher partition.
