Solved: Disk Drive E doesn't work -- not recognized

Q: Solved: Disk Drive E doesn't work -- not recognized

Disk Drive E doesn't work -- not recognized.

Recently I went to a repair shop had a new hard drive put in my five-year old DELL desktop. When I got home and powered up, I noticed that nothing happened when I inserted a CD into my Disk Drive E. (The disk drive right above it, Drive D, works fine.)

Also, Disk Drive E does not appear in My Computer under Devices with Removeable Storage.

Next I went in to Device Manager and saw that Disk Drive E is listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives, but that there was a red "X" next to it, apparently indicating that the drive has been disabled. I attempted to update the driver but was unable to locate my disc.

I called the repair shop and was told by the tech that there are no drivers for Disk Drive E, that there is nothing to update. When I told him about the red "X" he told me that the drive had been disabled. He said I could try enabling it, but he added that it might have been disabled for a reason. I tried to enable it but got a message stating that Windows was unable to enable the device. The tech then told me I could bring my PC back in and he would install a new drive for approximately $100, including labor.

Is there anything else I can try at home to get my Disk Drive E working again? Would it possibly help if I were to use my DELL installation CD? It should be fairly easy to find. Or should I follow the tech's advice and just buy a new disk drive?

Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,

Firstly.... I cant seem to download anything to my laptop (ASUS F3E Series) Downloading music through LimeWire works fine and WIndows seems to be able to Update but when i want to download games, toolbars etc it wont work. The box comes up to Install or Run which i click on then nothing happens! It looks like it does it with the progress bar but i cant find anything i'm suppossed to have installed.

Secondly..... My disk drive has suddenly stopped working. It wont recognise anything. In Device Manager, There is a yellow ! on the drive icon which says the following:::

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

When i click on 'Check for soloutions' nothing happens.
When i try and update the drive, this appears.....

Hello to all,
I have an HP pavilion dv7, windows 7 OS, SP1, and recently I tried to defragment my hard drive, but it doesn't come up as an option. (see attached img) It does, however, show up in disk management. I have read some forums, but I can't find the answer to my specific problem. Since this is the first time I tried to defragment it, I cannot tell you if it's related to anything I have done in the past, such as disk partitioning, or anything weird like that. I think there's a possibility that a friend partitioned my disk back in the day, but I don't remember exactly. I would really appreciate any feedback.

Cheerios!

It appears I can't run my disk defragmenter anymore. Every time when I'm trying to analyze the disk, it shows 0% although it's been about 3 months since I last time defragmented it, so it must have some kind of fragmentation. Also, when I highlight for example "system" and click defragment nothing happens. Before when I highlighted system and clicked degragment, the % number would show up and start going from 1 to 2, etc........ Now it just acts like it is turned off. It doesn't work on any of the 4 category choices (OS, Recovery, system, and my external hard drive).

A:Solved: Windows 7 - disk defragmenter doesn't work

Unless you've changed it, Windows 7 will automatically defragment itself every so often (I think the default is Wednesday nights). It's therefore entirely possible that there's no problem after all.

If that doesn't seem likely, I suggest you pick up another defrag tool (such as Piriform's defraggler) and see what it makes of your drive. Bear in mind that it over-reports some things, such as including the page file in the analysis even though it can't do anything to it.

Had similarities on my pc.

Goto BIOS, there you have 4 options.

Primary Master
Secondary Master

Primary Slave
Secondary Slave

Set it as follows:

Primary Master -----> Main Boot HDD
Secondary Master -----> EMPTY

Primary Slave -----> CD/DVD RAM
Secondary Slave -----> Secondary backup HDD
Hpe it helps!

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should also work for windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

I have a system running Windows 2000 Professional; I assembled the computer from fairly high-end components (back in 2002). Mostly it's been fairly easy to get good service from.

The CD-ROM drive does not usually recognize data CD's inserted into it. If I insert one it says, "please insert a disk into drive D." Installing drivers for new hardware is impossible.

I have installed a new CD-ROM drive; I've tried uninstalling the drive and letting Windows locate it; going into device manager and changing the drive letter from D to E; and now I understand the best way to fix the problem is to delete the IDE controllers.

Final note: all drives on the computer are IDE (as opposed to SATA). Additional note: I need to resolve this problem in order to access the internet, since it does not presently have a wireless network interface card (NIC).

A:Solved: CD-ROM/DVD Drive doesn't recognize disk

This problem has been resolved.

The computer's motherboard was by firm called Soyo Electronics (now defunct). When the computer is booted up, one hits "delete" to enter the setup menu. In the main menu, I selected "optimal defaults" and resumed booting up. The CD-ROM drive worked fine after that.

Still, I am interested in other people who encountered this problem. A web search of the error term, "please insert a disk in drive" [D] came up with several hits with advice, but not a lot of evidence that anything worked.

Hi,

I am not sure whether I should be posting this in the Windows forum or the PC Hardware because it involves both.

I have an external 320 GB Transcend Drive with a lot of important data.
Recently, I unplugged it from my PC and took to another to get some files.
One the other machine (Vista), it didn't show up as far as I can remember, thought that was strange so i brought it back to my Laptop (Win 7, Dual Boot with Ubuntu 10) and it only showed as Local Disk, I have tried to find useful information on the net but some is very vague and some is outright stupid and irrelevant.

The fact is that the HDD is not broken. When in Ubuntu I can view the contents fine and everything is there, no freeze ups or anything, but in windows the drive shows up as Local Disk, I don't think it is a drive letter conflict.

The Device shows up fine in the Device Manager.
I'm sure some of you have solved this problem as it seems many on the Internet have.
If so please tell me in a few steps how you resolved it.. I am not formatting as I do not deem this necessary since I can access my data fine in Ubuntu.

Kind Regards

Hi TSG(s) -

Newbie, first post.

Firstly, I have read all similar posts. My USB port is working, my cable is working, all drive letters are visible, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver does not help, ..., all suggestions from the posts do not apply however my disk drive (Maxtor One Touch II 250GB) is not recognized. It is not recognized in either the One Touch enclosure or a third party enclosure. It is not recognized when attached directly to the computer. It does not work when jumpered as either CS or Slave. Etc, etc.

When I activate the drive (either by plugging in the USB cable or powering on the drive) I get the bubble "Device can perform faster ...); I click on the bubble and I see the "Select a better port" stuff. The "Remove Hardware" shows the drive. In all these cases a drive letter is not assigned and Windows Explorer, My Computer, etc does not see the drive. Disk Management does not see the drive.

"Drive fried throw it away" is unacceptable. I have critical unbacked up data (I know, I know but I can't back up every nanosecond or afford RAID 1-5) so maybe the answer I'm looking for is pointers to some good data recovery software. I could send the drive to a data recoverey outfit but living in Costa Rica I might never see the drive again (upon return, customs is notorious for enjoying early Christmas at the expense of the addressee) and these guys charge an arm and a leg which I will pay if necessary but only as ... Try this on the work computer, reboot and see if it then recognizes the USB drive.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- cut here --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- cut here --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Hi

This is very bad situation now. All you can do is to try again. Make second DVD clean and try it again.
I really hope this will work somehow. If not, you have a big problem.

Before recovery image installation starts whole HDD will be formatted so there is no chance to start HDD recovery installation from the HDD (using 0 at start-up).

I have a Simple Tech Pininfarina 320 GB external hard drive that is no longer recognized by two different PCs, even under disk management. When plugged into the USB, the PCs do try to install the driver, but fails. The troubleshooter searches for a driver, but does not find one. Basically I get the information that "There is a problem wiht the driver for USB Mass Storage Device. Reinstalling the driver might fix this problem." But I cannot find a driver for this hard drive.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

A:External hard drive not recognized in Disk Management

The system is telling you that there is a problem with a USB driver, check in the Device Manager for any yellow warnings. Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers you will see a driver for USB Mass Storage Devices, right click and uninstall it then reboot, Windows should reinstall it, or go to the motherboard's manufacturer's site and download and install the latest chipset drivers..

There are two other possibilities, the hard drive has failed or the circuitry in the enclosure has develpoed a fault.

Remove the hard drive from the enclosure and (if you have access to one) hook it up to the internal connections of a dektop PC. Or, purchase a USB Hard Drive Adapter (about ?10) from a computer store or eBay and then plug it into the USB connection on any computer and see if you can then access the drive.

I have a 2TB Seagate GoFlex Desk external hard drive that works fine on my previous Windows XP computer (I know, very old) but is not recognized at all on my less-than-a-year old Toshiba laptop (S55-C5274) running Windows 10. I have been through support with Seagate, Microsoft, and Toshiba, with each of them point the finger at the other with no resolution. According to Seagate, the drive is compatible with Windows 10 and should work.
Unlike other users' problems I've read, my Windows 10 PC does not recognize the external hard drive anywhere - no sound recognizing something is there when plugging in, nothing in This PC/My Computer, and nothing shows in Disk Management or Device Manager. So unlike many others, I am unable to just do a partitioning to assign a letter via Disk Management - the computer doesn't even recognize it's there. The Seagate drive, however, does light up when plugged into the Windows 10 computer, and as I mentioned, still works perfectly on the Windows XP machine, where it is accessible via My Computer.
I have tested every USB port on the Windows 10 machine, and all work fine with other drives and peripherals, so it's not a hardware issue. Also, I have moved all my data from the Seagate drive onto a 2nd external drive, so losing data is not an issue. I even reformatted the Seagate drive (NTFS) via the Windows XP machine, but that did not change anything. I want to report a very unusual virus, I think.

Dispite all attempts to clean the virus using traditional methods recommended on this site, CCLEANER, AVG, trojan removers, Spybot, on line scans, panda, HijackThis...etc...I just couldnt rid my computer of this virus.

My computer kept showing repeated disk activity which woudlnt stop - even in SAFE MODE. The activity slowed my computer down to a slow crawl, which prevented any use at all.

I rebooted with a BART'S BOOT disk, and ALL my hard drives were reported as not installed. YEOW! My main c drive was reported as empty. I went into the bios screen, and my hard drives werent detected.

So - I couldnt even REFORMAT - heaven forbid...because no matter what I did, the hard drives werent even seen by my compiuter. That was my first clue. Second clue, was that while even running BARTS BOOT disk, the repeated disk activity didnt stop.

Humm...I stopped to think...ok...shut down computer - unplug it - that worked once before - maybe it will work again. NO!
So...I opened the case, removed the BIOS BATTERY - restarted and VIOLA it worked...a quick ccleaner just to be sure and I was back!

Hope this helps someone.

One assumes you replaced the battery ?lets just make sure you ARE clean? Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your Desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.

The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. I'm having a hard time with this computer, basically the mbr got messed up and apparently the windows drove locked and csnnot be accessed. I tried the dispatch command as you can see in the attachment and you'll see a ten gig drive I created as partition eight. Forgive me I'm new St this but this was the only drive I created so dell shipped it with so many partitions?
Anyways if you can assist I'll appreciate it, I tried the dispatch and no luck inget a error stating can't open bcd file which after giggling means the drive is still locked and cannot be opened
Also the mbr is just bad.

Is this one of the uses for this disk?

I have never had the need t use this disk till now but as I am getting problems starting up I tried System Restore and it didn't work (I have tried 2 restore points).
Can I use the repair disk that I created on my HP desktop to mend the system or to restore it to an earlier time ?

When I open the repair disk on the computer it just shows a couple of folders (boot ,sources as well as a file called bootmgr but I can't see a hrep file to let me know what I can do...

A:Using the repair disk when system resore doesn't work.

A system repair disc allows you to start (boot) your computer system so you can access different recovery options to help recover your Windows 7. The disc is usually used if you don't have a Windows installation disc or you can't access the recovery options provided by your computer manufacturer. A system repair disc is not able to install Windows 7. In order to use the disc your computer BIOS must be configured so the CD/DVD optical drive is the first boot option.

The various recovery options include startup repair, system restore, system image recovery, memory diagnostics and command prompt.

System Recovery Options

Yes, you can use the repair disc to access your restore points, but the restore points must have already been created and saved. The disc can't restore to something that isn't already available.

If you're having startup issues you could certainly use the disc to access startup repair. This tutorial explains more about the procedure. It's recommended that you run the startup repair 3 separate times and reboot the computer after each scan.

Startup Repair

If still having issues, one of the Forum experts prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides with some additional suggestions.

Or you could use this opportunity to do a complete clean install of the operating system and get rid of the HP factory bloatware that slows the machine down.

I've been having this problem for a few months now. I recently built my own computer, having been on a lap top for a couple of years, and found my old external hard drive. I plugged it in to the new computer, and it said something about needing to be formatted, which I promptly did due to nothing of importance being on it. I went to sleep, and woke up to see that it couldn't be formatted.

This is where my issue begins. It no longer appears in Computer, or Disk Management. Disk Management won't even load if I have the drive plugged in. There seems to be no way at all to format the drive, since Computer, and Disk Management both don't load when the drive is plugged in. Any help?

A:External Hard Drive is Not Recognized in Computer or Disk Management

I have a similar problem. I have an old external hard drive and it wont showed up or open under my computer or disk management. I tried to open it under disk management but there is no way to be found. The files F, G, H, etc are empty. I really appreciate an extra help here since I am not a computer expert. Thank you!!!!

Recently I decided to upgrade my hard disk storage space so I bought a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB SATA hard disk drive. Upon installing the drive I entered the Bios and went into "Intergrated Peripherals" section and set the BIOS to recognize P-ATA + S-ATA drives. When I reboot the new Maxtor drive shows up in Windows Explorer and functions normally. Also in Windows Explorer, my CD/DVD drive appears. However when I put a cd in the drive and click on the drive in Explorer I get the message to "Insert a disc into drive F:". The drive will not read the disc. When I went into Device Manager the CD/DVD drive shows up and says that it is functioning properly. Strange.....
So, I rebooted and reset the BIOS to the setup defaults (ie. P-ATA Drive Only) and when the computer boots up now the CD/DVD drive functions normally but the Maxtor drive is now not recognized. I understandObviously the Maxtor drive is not recognized because the BIOS is set for P-ATA drive only, but why when the BIOS is set for P-ATA + S-ATA is the CD/DVD drive not recognized?

My computer specs are as follows:

Processsor: Intel Pentium4 3.2C GHz (478pin/FSB800)
Motherboard: MSI i865G ATX
Bios: AMI Bios
RAM: DDR SDRAM 1GB (512MB x 2 / PC3200)
Video:nVidia GeForce FX5700 128MB AGP
Sound: CREATIVE SoundBlaster Audigy2ZS Platinum Pro

Hard Disk2:Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB SATA
OS: Windows XP PRo

Sorry in advance if this is in the wrong section. I just got an Alfa AWUS036NH USB adapter, I followed the instructions and things load but nothing happens when I plug it in? I don't get the "found new hardware" message and it doesn't show up in my computer. I did notice that one of the steps in the install doesn't "come up" when I work through the installer. That step is number 5 "choose the Ralink Coniguration Tool". My install goes from the step "install the driver and Ralink WLAN utility to choose "finish". Thanks in advance and BTW I'm a complete novice so go easy.

Hi,

I had posted similar entry in "Operating Systems" > Windows XP Home and Professional. Refer to this link - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic392025.html.

I was referred to post in this forum instead.

In summary, I am facing the following problems:
1) Right-click on "Properties" on Desktop -> there's no context menu popup. Just an hour glass and after around a min or so, it's just back to normal.
2) Disk Defragmenter doesn't work -> When I click to Start Defrag, there's a popup box, stating "Disk Defragmenter could not start".
3) Can't seem to Empty Recycle Bin -> Whenever I double-click on "Recycle Bin", there're no files inside the folder. But when i click "Empty Recycle Bin", system prompted "Are you sure you want to delete all 54 files?". Upon clicking "Yes", another error popup box stated "Cannot remove folder bases: The directory is not empty".
4) Popup box error: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Temp\C31F31E6 is either corrupted or unreadable.

I had tried to run AVG Anti-Virus scan, but it had only captured cookies.
I had also used the Malwarebytes' Anti Malware on 2 occasions. 1st time: it had not completed successfully. It had ran for more than 7 hrs (on quick scan) and then just hanged there. 2nd time: Same thing. Quick scan, but also hanged after around 2 hrs or so. When I looked at the f... Read more

Hey,

I got new Desktop recently, Lenovo K450e, and when I went to plug in my external HD, Seagate 500GB, it didn't show up in either My Computer or Disk Management and there are no exclamation points next to the drivers suggesting that I would need a driver update. I plugged it into other ports on my computer with no luck but when I plug it into my laptop it works fine. I have read so many different forums with no luck. My computer is a Windows 8.1 intel core I7 processer.

Thank you

Hi,

My laptop is currently running on windows XP Home Edition.

I have been facing numerous problems:

1) Right-click "Properties" on Desktop does not work. It doesn't bring up the window for the wallpaper/screensaver.
2) Disk Defragmenter cannot start.
3) Although I have deleted all the documents in the Recycle Bin, the icon on the desktop still shows that there are documents in the folder. When I re-click into the Recycle Bin folder and click "Empty Recycle Bin", the number of documents still remain the same. I cant seem to clear all these unwanted documents at all.

Any solution out there?

Pls help.

Regards,
Tracy

A:Right-click "Properties" on desktop doesn't work & Disk Defragmenter cannot start

Are you saying there is no context menu at all when you right-click on the desktop?

Do you get any message when you try to run the defrag app?

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

My problem is that I cannot access the internet through my LAC. I enable the connection and it will connect and send packets, but will not receive any packets. I have no problems enabling my wireless connection and connecting to the internet. The wireless does like to disconnect and reconnect about 3 or 4 times an hour which is another problem I have. I believe this LAC problem started around the same time I was trying to get shared music between my computers on iTunes. I was trying to allow for connection on port 3689, but everything I did was unsuccessful. Any suggestions for any of these problems I'm having?

I have a hard disk that I want to clone my C drive to, and I connected it via USB external; it showed up fine, I formatted it. However, since XP doesn't recognize boot drives through USB I wanted to attach it internally before I cloned my system drive over for when I do a boot test.

However, the drive that showed up just fine through USB isn't showing up when I plug it into the MB. It is recognized and is powering up, because when the system posts, the initial screen shows it is connected, and it gets warm after a few minutes, so it's working and the system can detect it, it is just not showing up in Windows.

I checked, and it's set to Slave.

What's the problem?
