Adding Subtitle with Handbrake

Q: Adding Subtitle with Handbrake

Hello,
Recently downloaded some full movie (mp4), and found a Hebrew subtitle. Located both files in a folder,
opened the subtitle with Notepad, made some minor editing, saved it (encoding UTF-8) srt file,
movie and subtitle same name.
Played the movie in any player on the system, the subtitle rans perfect, no need to adjust timing.
Then I loaded the movie in "HandBrake (0.10.5.0 - 32bit)", imported the subtitle, selected Hebrew and
utf-8, made a small preview file - subtitle was not added.
Note, I used the same procedure several times ago with other movies - results were good.
Do not know what happened, I would ask for some help please.
Thanks
Motim

Preferred Solution: Adding Subtitle with Handbrake

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I am trying to add subtitle to a movie (mp4 format), seaching the net found some, each one has to be installed first.
One of my tests is "Videpad video editor", found a subtitle file in Hebrew, .srt format. First I located both movie and subtitle in one folder, both same name, to chk the subtitle I opened the movie in 'MPC-HC' player, started to play - the subtitle runs correctly (synchro) with the movie. Then started the "Videopad", loaded the movie and the subtitle. The subtitle as said above is Hebrew, on the preview the fonts are giberish, the window of text selecting fonts, size etc. is Gray - disabled, dont know why.
Almost the same happens with "HandBrake", there I could select Hebrew and utf-8, but in preview its giberish.
Is someone familiar with the both programs, or recomend a program to do the job.
I tried also virtualdub, but first have to convert the srt file into ssa format.
Well, any answer / help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Motim

Recently dumped my iMac for a Windows 8 POWERHOUSE from Dell. Unfortunately my Handbrake app will not copy commercial DVD movies, although this is easily done on a Mac running Handbrake. Any suggestions? Any FREE Handbrake styled alternatives for Windows out there?

A:Handbrake and Win 8

you need to bypass the copy protection before you can get handbrake to transcode it. how did they get around that on the Mac???

once you've ripped the movie to the hard drive sans copy protection, you can easily use handbrake on it.

Slysoft is well-known for a slew of great products. Check them out. Also DVDFab.

the free stuff is kind of antiquated. stuff like DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, etc.

Hey guys, I have to rip a DVD for my class assignment and splice two clips together, so my professor told use to use Handbrake to do it. However, when I click "open source", my dvd file isn't there. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum.

If I own a DVD purchased out a shop and I want to place a copy on my Hard Drive, is it legal in the UK to do this? I tried Handbrake to rip a music dvd (owned [personally]) but it wouldnt play the file back. Tried WMP and VLC but neither could read the file. Is this an ordinary occurance and all i need to do is try again and hopefully the next time it will work?

A:Handbrake and DVDs

I can't answer about the legality, but I can tell you that you skipped a step. You need something to remove the protection first. The most common and easiest method is to use DVDfab HD Decrypter (which is free) to rip the movie to your HDD, and then Handbrake can take that folder and turn it into whatever type file you need.

have you tried handbrake yourself?

have a look at dvdshrink - it can rip and backup. it's pretty basic, but it's free.

as far as commercial software goes, dvdfab is very good and can convert to h264, but it costs unfortunately.

I rip my DVDs for playback on my Xbox360. I accomplish this by using Handbrake 0.9.3, since it contains a nice, neat profile for my 360.

The two newer versions of Handbrake do not support profiles, and I'm unaware of any way to export the profile and add it in to a new version. I've found plenty of strings online to try in the newer versions, yet none of the outputted files will play back on my 360. Ones done in the older 0.9.3 with the 360 profile work just fine, on my computer and the console.

Is there anyway around this, or anyway to get the original profile settings into 0.9.5?

The only thing i can think of is Taking note of what your 360 profile settings are in .9.3 and re-creating them in .9.5.

Also, the AppleTV/AppleTV 2 profiles should work on your 360.

sorry, but we cannot assist with this, unfortunately.

from the rules page:

Circumventing Copy Protection - While we believe it's reasonable to make backup copies of CDs and DVDs that you own, a lot of people break copy protection for the wrong reasons. The law is still vague, at best, as to if it is legal to break copy protection in order to make such a backup, even for personal use. (The DMCA, for example, seems to make it illegal.) As a result, we do not allow discussion of how to break copy protection at this time. If we can find a nice way to draw the line, we may reconsider this in the future as laws get sorted out.Click to expand...

I recently got into ripping Blu-ray movies and encoding them. However I have recently had a few blue screens with restarts. I use MakeMKV and it usually runs fine and doesn't give my problems. However, I have had problems encoding the MKV files with Handbrake v0.9.5. Here are my system specs:

Windows 7 64-bit Pro SP1
Intel Core i5-2500K (overclocked to 4 GHz)
8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B)
ASRock Pro3 Gen3 Mobo (latest BIOS update 2.30)
Mushkin Chronos 120GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HD
Nvidia GTX 560TI graphics card (slightly overclocked, can't remember speed)
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU cooler

The case also has plenty of fans (7 to be exact). 2 intake fans in the front, 1 intake in the side, 1 intake on the front of the cooler, 1 outtake on the rear of the cooler, and 2 outtake on the back and top. So the tower is staying cool. I'm running AXTU Hardware Monitor during the encoding and temps are staying steady around 50C, which I've heard are normal. The encoding is about 50% now and so far no crashes or spikes in temperature.
I thought the memory may be the culprit and I ran MemTest86. It returned one error after a few hours of running. I have not taken the RAM out to test each module or clean the slots. The timing is set at 9-9-9-24 and I dialed down the speed to 1333 from 1600.
That's all I can think of now but if I forgot something, don't be afraid to ask. Please someone help me!

I get the aforementioned BSOD, only in one specific situation, and it happens 100% of the time. Otherwise, I never get BSODs in this computer. The problem happens only when I open Handbrake, and drop an mp4 on it to use as a source. The moment I do that, boom BSOD. It's extremely strange. I have tried reinstalling Handbrake of course to no avail. For now my only solution is to have a Ubuntu VM with Handbrake and run it that way. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks.

Hey,

i'm getting a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE BSOD shortly after or by execution of the win10 version of handbrakeCLI (uses x264 encoder).
In compability mode (win7) it seems to work.

I updated the drivers before the last bluescreen (from the Lenovo homepage) but that didn't do the trick.

Laptop was upgraded from Win8 to Win10 some while ago. Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?

Could you explain to me what this handbrakeCLI software is? I'm unfamiliair with it.

Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?

Most of the crashes show some stuff of the DirectX Kernel graphics (dxgmms2.sys) what points to the display drivers usually.
The ntoskrnl.exe is Windows Kernel, simplified it is never the true cause unless you experience a hell lot of problems (much more then only bluescreens).

Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

Uninstall Daemon ToolsDownload the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
Double click the executable to open itClick on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

Hi. Until yesterday, I had Handbrake 10.2 installed. On launch, a message appeared (within the GUI) inviting me to click for 10.3. Which I did. I can't recall the exact sequence of events but it appeared to have gone smoothly and I was left with a popup saying Do you really want to uninstall 10.2? I said Yes as that seemed logical.

I then went to open up 10.3 ? nothing there. The only Handbrake related file I could find was a defunct link to the shortcut I had on my desktop. Ah well, so off I went and downloaded the 10.3 installer. But before I ran it, I used regedit to delete all registry entries referring to Handbrake. That way, my PC would be 'clean' right?

After the install, 10.3 launched and immediately showed a message about my previous presets and there it was ? 10.3 had the custom preset that I'd made with 10.2! Not only that, but 10.3 was able to load a DVD with DRM protection. To do that with 10.2, I had to copy a 'special' dll file into Program Files/Handbrake.

It seems I was mistaken then. Uninstalling a program and then deleting registry entries doesn't 'clean' your PC. Otherwise, my Handbrake 10.3 wouldn't have known about my old preset nor would it have the 'special' dll file.

So how DO you completely remove a program?

What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Some generic advice.

If you are overclocking STOP. Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

Hi there

Converting 1080p MKV files encoded in H264 to H265

What's the best setting to use keeping original quality as much as possible -- a 2hr film currently with my H264 encode is around 4GB for MKV file.

The source is full HD 1080p captured from SKY Q minibox. Quality on playback is excellent but I want to store a lot of these on an external HDD so want to compress the size down a bit.

(note you need to use an HDMI splitter to get stuff off the SKY Q minibox otherwise the capture device won't see anything (DRM).

The capture device doesn't unfortunately capture in H265 which is why I need the conversion step.

I would like to get about 50% of that size with H265 - but not sure of the settings in Handbrake I should use.

Any video editors here --help please !!!!!

I'm not bothered if the final container is MKV or MP4 so long as it's encoded H265 and quality is very similar (preferably identical) to original file.

Cheers

Have a subtitle (.srt file) which is not synchro with the movie (.mp4 format).
I tried two editors, one "SubTitle Editor 3413" and "SubtitleWorkshop_6.0b_131121", in both list of playable files, there is mp4 format also, however got error mesages they both cannot play mp4 files. In settings I browsed to MPC-HC as default player - the error was still there. This mp4 file plays very well in mpc-hc player and in smplayer, So I understand all needed codecks are installed.
The .srt file opens well in the editors, but cannot play the movie.
Is there some way to make it go ?
Answers will be appreciated.
Thanks
Motim

I frequently download video files in .mkv format, then copy them to DVD using ConvertXtoDVD 5 or 6 (I have both versions). The .mkv files usually include hard-encoded subtitle files that display on my HD TV at the bottom of the screen, so low that they are mostly cut off. I have tried the subtitle-editing features of ConvertX to try to get them higher, but nothing happens (presumably because the subtitles in the .mkv files are hard-encoded). I have tried creating .both .srt and .sub files from the .mkv subtitle texts, using SubTitle Edit v. 3.4., hoping I could add then to the output from ConvertX so as to view the subtitles positioned higher on the screen. However, when I add the .srt (or .sub) files to the .vob files from ConvertXtoDVD, then burn the ouptut to a DVD, the added subtitle files are blank, showing nothing on my TV, nor do they show up on my computer using VLC Media Player. I'm using Windows 7 and a Philips DVD player (model DVP 642) that otherwise works fine. Any one have suggestions as to how I could encode subtitle files so that my DVD player and VLC Media player will recognize them?

I apologize in advance to the trivial problem I have. I am a member of Urusoft forum, but I lost my password, and I can't became a new one so easy. (long story). I reinstalled my operating system (XP SP3) and I forgot the settings in Subtitle Workshop 2:51. I instaled the latest K-Lite Codec Pack however, and maybe he is the cause of this anomaly

Hi everyone,

What software will convert my movies.avi + subtitle into vcd, mpeg, wmv, mp4 (either one of those format) with subtitle embedded?

Thanks

- I have dvdripper it can only convert dvd file not avi.

A:Avi with subtitle to VCD,MPEG, etc?

So basically you just want to embed subs?
anime fan?
Anyhow I would convert with formatfactory (to mp4) then embed with this

YAMB 2.1.0.0 beta 2 - VideoHelp.com Downloads

The easier route would probably be to convert straight to mkv and embed the subs as you convert.
There's a number of apps that will do that for you but it's not listed among your preferred formats.

Dear all,

I'm having a big trouble while trying to install "Subtitle Workshop". After downloading it and accepting the Licence Agreement, the installation always fails "Error opening file for writing" and then the operation is aborted. I have tried to download it from many websites, but the problem is the same with all.
I personally have already used it some years ago, and it was functionning perfectly, so as I'm not finding commentaries related to this same case, I wish I can find here someone for an advise. I'm needing it urgently.

Thanks a lot for your enlightments )

Anyway, I have the translation for my dvd in a text document, including the time, for the film. So does anyone out there know a program that I can merge my subtitle into the dvd file?

Hi AnukErinesh and welcome,

Do you have subtitles on if available checked? Right click up top on Library or anywhere on the top bar to get to all the options and go to play-Lyrics, captions and subtitles and click On if available.

Hello Boatdude and welcome to the forums

Remove all existing codec packs/software with Revo Uninstaller before doing this:

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

1. Go to: Free-Codecs.com :: Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 7.2.0 : The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative support and Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder.
2. Scroll down to find the link that will "Download [ K-Lite Mega Codec Pack X.X.X ]" where the X.X.X will be the version number
*If the link doesn't work then choose one of the links with "MIRROR" written next to it*
3. Click on it and save the file to your documents
4. When it finishes downloading, find the file and run it

Now we have to install the program:

1. Click Next
2. Check "Advanced Install" and click Next
3. Click Next
4. On the drop down menu, select "Profile 8: Lots of stuff (without player)" and click Next
5. Click Next
6. Click Next
7. Check the "Windows Media Player" box and click Next
8. Check both of the boxes:
-"Video file extensions:"
-"Audio file extensions:"
and click Next
9. Click "Select All" and click Next
10. Click Next
11. Click Install

Hi,

For ease of use, i want to make a folder available at my company network for people to drop any video files in, and then to make it output to a standard format (mp4) in another folder. That way no one will have to wait for a video to finish encoding or have to think about conversion at all.

I can use a computer that is always on and running, connected to the network and with free space and processing power, but i wonder if this is the right way. What i have so far:

Using Syncback Pro, I'm automatically watching for file changes in the folder, then syncing the changed files to a local folder (so not to directly encode from the network. Then, after each sync i have Syncback run a bat file for converting, which is inside the local folder. This is the code:

FOR /F "tokens=*" %%G IN ('DIR /S /B *.*') DO "C:\Program Files\Handbrake\HandBrakeCLI" -i "%%G" -o "%%G".mp4 --preset="Normal"

The problem is that it outputs in the same folder as it inputs, which makes syncing back to the network sloppy. The next step in the process, which would be to sync the output files back to the network can be easily done, but not if the original and converted files are jumbled together. =

My question would be:

Am i doing this the right way? (in the broadest sense)
and
Is there a way to output handbrakeCLI converted files to a different folder?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

I'm working on a computer that is having some problems with DVD Playback. The DVD plays fine, but only when sub titles are disabled. I need subtitles on as it is a sing along DVD.

This is a retail DVD that was bought in a store.

DMA Mode is enabled, 80 conducter IDE cable connected on the secondary IDE port. This is the only drive connected on this cable.

The model of the DVD drive is a LiteOn sohc-5232k DVD/CD-RW combo drive.

Hardware acceleration is disabled.

The computer is a Windows XP Service Pack 2, 256 MB Memory, 64 Megabyte AGP video card with a 2.6 GHZ Celeron processor.

I've tried the DVD in my Macintosh and it plays just fine with sub titles turned on.

I tried to update the Firmware for the drive but it told me the firmware that was already installed was the most recent. I updated anyway, and it didn't help.

I've also shut down every program (such as virus scan) that I can find to make sure that something wasn't hogging resources.

-------------
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have tried playing another movie DVD (Bruce Almighty) and turned subt titles on and it did just fine. Smooth as can be. Also, I have tried PowerDVD and Windows Media Player. They both stutter and pause....its like it has to "think" about it before it generates the sub titles.
-----------

If anyone could give me any info on what to try I would appreciate it as I don't know where to go from here.

Thanks ... Read more

A:DVD Playback with subtitle problems

Well I just changed out the cable, and hooked the DVD drive up to the Master IDE and put the Hard Drive IDE cable on the secondary.

Its working fine. Can someone tell me why that would make a difference?

Thanks for reading

Can anyone help me with this?

I have a film in French and I found the srt English subtitle file for it. Using a program called Subtitle Workshop all I had to do was load the srt file and run the film in the programs preview mode and the subtitles played with the film "Perfectly". In sync etc on the first try. Even though all of the instructions were extremely detailed and complicated and applied to editing the subtitles, font, size etc. I didn't have to do anything more than the above. BUT here's the catch. The program does not combine the two permanently. It doesn't produce a combined product that you can then burn and play on your dvd player. It only facilitates the playing of the combined elements in preview. Usually if I burn any downloaded video and attempt to play it on my player it usually doesn't work. It's out of sync. However when I take a video file and convert and burn it using DVD Flick it works perfectly.

SO! I need to find out how to "Simply" combine the above elements and burn them so that I can watch the film play exactly as it does in preview on this software with the English subtitle file I already have.
I would appreciate any assistance you might be able to offer. Many Thanks.

A:How to combine srt subtitle file and AVI?

The subtitle needs to have the same file name as the the movie...

For instance lets say the you have The Matrix.avi, the sub must be called The Matrix.srt in order to correspond with the video...

Now for combining the 2 I would recommend dvdflick or convertxtodvd...
