Burning content - disc drive not recognising blank disc

Q: Burning content - disc drive not recognising blank disc

Hi All,
I know this is 'against the rules' as I have posted this in another section as well but I got no replies so thought I would try this instead.

I have a toshiba satellite L750 running Windows 7 home premium, when trying to burn anything onto a blank disc I get as far as selecting my items and asking it to burn but it keeps telling me to insert a blank disc (which obviously I have). I have tried several different types of blank disc but it dosnt seem to recognise any of them.

Would be very greatful if someone could help.

Many thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Burning content - disc drive not recognising blank disc

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hmmm tricky are you sure they are blank? your drive also may need a firmware update.

I have a HP laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have a DVD+/- R/RW with Lightscribe drive.

After I burn any type of CD or DVD, either in iTunes or using the default program that came with my computer, no CD or DVD will be recognized by my computer until I restart the computer.

If I go to My Computer after inserting a disc it will show an icon for "CD-Rom" (i put in a audio cd) and if I double click on it will prompt with "Insert a Disc" and eject my drive.

The fact that if I restart and it works is alright, but it's stupidly annoying if I'm trying to back-up my computer and I have to restart every time I want to burn another CD.

What can I try to do to fix this?

Every time before when I put a disc into the disc drive on my computer it would auto-play and ask me what I wanted to do with it. If it didn't auto-play I would be always able to find the disc in the My Computer menu but now it doesn't do anything, I can hear the disc being spun inside the machine but windows doesn't recognise/realise that it's there and clicking on the drive in My Computer will just get a message that I need to insert a disc into the drive.

This doesn't just happen with blank discs but with regular movie DVDs and audio CDs too.

I have no idea what to do to resolve this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance - P

Hi there,

I have an Asus Notebook N53SV series computer which I use to play games mostly but yesterday my disc drive has stopped working. It was working just fine the night before and I don't understand how it could just stop working. I uninstalled a game as I have brought a new game and I didn't have sufficient space on my hard drive to run the new game. Once the uninstall was complete I restarted my computer and placed the new game disc in the DVD drive and the auto run window didn't come up. I clicked on the windows Icon and checked in Device Manager and it states that it is working properly. I put a DVD in and it worked so I tried the Game disc in another computer and it worked so its not the disc. Its like it just doesn't recognise that there is a disc in there or something. I have searched the net and tried every thing it suggested and nothing worked. I have uninstalled the BD drive program and re installed it and it still isn't working. There is no reason the disc would not work in my computer so I'm stuck and have no idea where to go from here. Please Help.

A:Asus BD-ROM Drive not recognising certain disc's

Device Manager only reports whether a device has a driver installed or not. So your drive could be malfunctioning (not reading any disks) but still be seen as working properly by DM.
If you are still covered by warranty reach out to Asus Tech Support.
If not, start checking ebay for a replacement drive.

I've been having this rather annoying problem for nearly 2 months now and have tried several things to fix it, as mentioned in some simmilar old posts on here.
Basically my CD drive suddenly decided not to recognise blank lists so I can't write files to CD. I tend to use itunes but it doesn't work in WMP either.
The message displayed is "Please insert a blank disc"
I am using a Sony Vaio VGN-NS20M / Windows Vista Home Premium
The disc drive is MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ880AS

So far I have tried uninstalling and rebooting, checking for updates, doing a system restore to before the problem started... none of this has worked and it's driving me mad!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a newbie here, and am hoping somebody can help with this issue. I have a hp pavillion dv6000 laptop with vista 64, and a built-in cd/dvd burner. Recently, no matter what software I use to burn discs(data, audio, mp3 etc) the process completes normally, but the disc remains blank. I've looked all over the forums, and searched google for answers as well, but came up with - pardon the pun - a blank. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A:drive is not capable of burning disc

Hello redhat

If you are trying to burn a DVD you will need software to do that.

If you are trying to burn a CD
To make sure that the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive is recognized as a recordable drive, make sure that the Recording tab appears in the CD drive properties:
Click Start, and then click My Computer.
Right-click the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive, click Properties, and then look for the Recording tab

If it is not that
Go here and try
Method 3 in the "General troubleshooting" section
and Method 1 in the "Advanced troubleshooting" section.

Just upgraded win98 to XP and added a harddrive and now I cannot get my cd rom drives, R or RW, to see files on my backup cds in Windows Explorer. CD drives do work for installing software and they do see some bmp files on one cd but nothing on the others. Shows them as blank or corrupted even tho we've always used them as backups before. Everything is still installed on original harddrive but with new os. Is something goofy with XP that I don't know about or did I just miss something in the upgrade??

I am new to the forums on this web site, and hopefully someone can help me. I am very literate with computer lingo, but I am but in high school so dont take offense to some of my questiosn. I am running a HP computer ( I know minimal about it, it was passed down to me and rebuilt, it used to be a small server for my fathers buisness and our home network.) The only think I can think of that has been done to it is new RAM and Hard drives like no other. But I run Itunes, Songbird, WMP, and Quicktime for my media usage. My disc drive (not sure what it is, but can find out if it is a needed piece of information) will play anything (sometimes has a hard time with it.) But for the most part it will not burn CD's , and a fan of music myself (being a musician and a fond listener to everything) love to mix and burn my own music. Should I go ahead and buy an external disc drive that will play and burn. Or should I just try and fix it with a new driver, or get a new internal drive. I can install all of this myself, but am clueless as to what to get. Any response would be greatly appreciated speaking I have not a clue. Thank You

I've spent hours and hours trying to fix it, and have found nothing really worthwhile online. I'm coming here in the outside chance someone else may have experienced something similar.

Basically, my Windows 7 laptop will no longer allow me to play dvd/cds (burned or store bought). The drive shows up in My Computer, is enabled, bios look good, etc, etc, but if I put a disc in it never autoruns or shows up with the disc name in My Computer,
and if I double click the disc drive I get a "please insert disc" dialogue box and the drive door pops open. I've tried absolutely everything I can think of, and (for what it's worth) I don't think its a hardware issue because after I sent my computer off
to Samsung for this same repair it came back completely reformatted the disc drive worked for a second. Then I started getting rid of some of the bloat ware in here (bought it at best buy... big mistake) again, and it shut down.

Here's what I've done or tried so far:
- Uninstall, reinstall the drive
- Updated the drivers
- Updated dvd/cd drive firmware
- Ran Microsoft's "Fix it" utility
- Cleaned the lenses/laser
- Remapped the drive to a different letter/path
- Checked registry to ensure filters weren't an issue (the upper and lower)
- Restored the laptop back to just after I received it back from the Samsung repair people (didn't work)
- Undid the restore
- Checked BIOS (I'm by no means BIOS-savvy, but it appeared that everything was in line with ... Read more

So I have an bit of an odd and I think unique problem (as many searches came up with no solutions). Simply put, my boot manager is missing, but only when my windows install disc is not in the disc drive. It started several months ago and I just left it be, let the disc it int he disc drive and it was not that big of a deal. But just did a clean install couple days ago I re-installed windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on my computer (using an upgrade disc if that makes a difference). I formatted the drive with what I guess is a quick format (the option the install disc gives you). I have tried doing a repair with the install disc but no problems are found every time I try.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this problem? Or I guess another way to ask, how do I get the computer to look for the boot manager on the hard drive and not in the disc drive?

EDIT: Also sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didn't really see a section that fit this problem, but if there is a better section for it, could a moderator please move it.

I have just reinstalled windows but the problems are still there

Problem 2

I'm having an odd problem on two different PCs. Both are WinXP and clear of spyware. They share very few other details, making it odd that they have the same exact problem.

Once I insert a CD into the optical drive (a Pioneer 108 DVD+-RW on one machine and a LiteOn DVD ROM on the other), the computer reads it and then ANY OTHER disc I put in after the first one seems to go unrecognized. Not only that, but bringing up "My Computer" shows that the drive is saying the FIRST disc's directory.

The only program I have on both which I suspect is CopyToDVD. Any suggestions? (I've already tried uninstalling it and it didn't solve the issue).

Working on a spiffy e-machine with Windows Vista Home Basic that runs pretty well.

After reading multiple posts where the advice usually begins with suggesting a 'boot disc' or a 'recovery disc', I guess what I'm looking to find out is:

A:Boot Disc, Recovery Disc, Frisbee Disc

1) what is the difference between a boot disc and a recovery disc?Boot disk vs recovery disk. Let me see if I can phrase that in a way that makes some sense.A recovery disc is a generic term for the disk or media containing a backup of the original factory condition or a specified condition of a computer as configured by the original equipment manufacturer or an end-user. OEM supplied recovery media is sometimes shipped with some computers to allow the user to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and pre-loaded software as it was when it was shipped. This is not as common a practice today as it was in the past. I won't confuse the issue, but google recovery partition for more information.A boot disk is a removable data storage medium, i.e. DVD or flash drive from which a computer can load and run 'boot' an operating system or utility program. The computer must have an installed program or application which will load and execute a program or application from the boot disk. This will enable you to boot an otherwise unusable machine to be able to troubleshoot the OS or non-working application as necessary.Hope that gives you a better idea of the difference. As to how to create a boot disk? I will let more knowledgeable staff or members assist you.

If your machine won't read CDs (but can eg, play DVDs) and gives a "prepare this blank disc" error message, there is probably a driver conflict. After several warranty calls to Dell, much good advice, updating drivers and firmware, and installing a new CD Drive (Optiarc) it would work for a bit then crash again.

After a bit more research - see the closed thread at 'Prepare This Blank Disc' Problem, which is useful but failed, I decided to uninstall Roxio 9, which unfortunately came preinstalled.

Make sure every reference to Roxio is deleted. Search the computer and registry. Maybe uninstall the CD drive and reinstall, reboot, then it may work. Mine did! I then installed ImgBurn which does a fine job of copying CDs.

All other options (eg, relating to upper and lower filters) failed in my case. I think the problem started with Vista Business SP1 install. Good luck.

A:Disc burning problem

Photos and videos are just data files with different filename extensions. They should burn to a DVD data disc the same as any other data files. Are you trying to covert the photos into a slide show and/or make the video files into a video DVD that will play on a standard DVD player?

Can you expand a bit on, "it doesn't work"? Does Nero report an error at any time or does it go through all the motions of burning the files but nothing is on the disc?

When I use Windows 7 to burn data or jpgs to a disc, the list of what I?m going to burn always includes ?desktop.ini? ready to be written to disc.

I just burned one driver file to a CD-R and when I look at the disc directory it lists the file I want plus ?Files Ready to Be Written to Disc (1)? and ?desktop.ini?.

Why does ?desktop.ini? appear when I want to burn a disc?
And why does it show up when viewing the burned disc?s directory?

It can be deleted because it did not get burned to the disc, but why does it keep appearing?

I want to submit a picture I took of my dog into a photo contest. They are accepting pictures on CD. My husband said he would burn it for me but he is taking too long so I am attempting to do it myself.

We have a program called Roxio on our computer. Is this what I would use?

I have the dogs picture saved and I opened it up in this Roxio program but then I could never find the button that say's "Burn to disc" so I am stuck.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

I am trying to burn recovery disc on a new HP A6130N. Every time, it goes through the process of copying files and when it is done comes up with a message saying recovery failed, try a new disc. I've tried 3 disc all with same results. Same message for backing up files. Could it be the brand of disc I'm using? (HP DVD+R 8x) Please help as I just got off of the phone with HP and couldn't understand half of what he was telling me. They are going to send me recovery disc but this doesnt help with backups

When I tried to burn a disc today, while the programme was calculating disc etc, the screen went blue and the following came up;

STOP; 0x0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X806FF94F, 0XA5EOA798, 0X00000000

I didnt have the internet on, so nothing interfered with it.

I was using E drive with a CDRW blank disc

I swapped drive to drive D, and rebooted and tried again but exactly the same thing happened.

Finally, I swapped the disc to a CDR disc in D drive and it finally worked.

Any ideas?

Burn software...has a driver.

I'd try the uninstall/reinstall routine to eliminate possible corruption.
