Metal on Metal Short Circuits?

Q: Metal on Metal Short Circuits?

I've got a really strange problem.. My computer will randomly shut off or not turn on sometimes. Once it "short circuits" it won't turn on again for a while - sometimes an hour, sometimes all day. At first I thought it was overheating, but when I was messing around with it, I found that if I unplug the HDMI cable after it shuts off, and sometimes just touch the metal of the HDMI cable to the metal mount (not the actual port) of the HDMI port it will turn back on, but not all the way. The fans will start going, but if I then plug the HDMI cable back in, it doesn't show anything on my monitor.

Can anyone explain this strange behavior?

Preferred Solution: Metal on Metal Short Circuits?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Metal on Metal Short Circuits?

Firstly did you bench test everything before installing into the case?

Are the standoffs in the correct place on the case and are you sure that no extra standoffs are under the motherboard causing it to short to the case?

Something is obviously shorting I would disassemble the machine and reassemble it paying attention to where you install the standoffs and for foreign objects that may have fallen behind the mobo. might be worth bench testing it first to figure out if anything in particular is causing the problem.

Your psu should grounds the case and motherboard so you want to ensure that your wall socket isn't damaged and has a working ground.

Hello, i had bought the XPS 15 laptop approximately 5 months ago from philippines and right now i am in india. When i am charging the laptop i get electic shock when i touch the metal parts of the laptop.
But recently i discovered when the laptop is charging i get current from other parts of the house as well such as metallic bathroom taps and metal grill of my house.
I tested it using tester so its not some assumption but real current.
So please provide some guidance on why is this happening and why is the current flowing in different parts of my house when laptop is charging.

Alright I'll keep this nice and short.

I'm helping a friend upgrade his board due to his old one not supporting graphics cards at all despite having a pci-e slot. When his board finally came, we performed the replacement and stuck all wires in their appropriate places, and from there on when we turned on the computer there was absolutely no activity. The power indicator on the board lights up, but the led power indicator on back of the PSU turns off when the system is turned on. So from here I decided to place all bare minimum components on a table and try it out from there. And yes it turned on and everything, it was a success. From here we put the components back in testing out with the extreme bare minimum first, and yes it the problem occurs again. Here are my questions: Could it be the power supply? Or could it be the case itself? And on an additional note, this issue with the case also happens with the old board.

Thanks for looking at my thread.

A:Short circuitry with metal case?

This sure sounds like the case. Try disconnecting the power lead(s) and start it by shorting the appropriate pins.Disconnect other case leads one at a time to pin this down.

I recently (meaning last night) fixed my Toshiba Tecra 8100
by installing various new parts I spent over a year trying to find.

RTC Battery, LCD screen, Motherboard and inverter board.

Once installed I still found myself having trouble booting until I thought of switching the laptop memory card from one slot to the other.

The computer finally booted up but had trouble staying on. Various software error messages about Windows confirming licensing or errors in reading and implementing .exe and .dll files.

After another half hour of reboots; another idea came to me.
Maybe there's a shorting going on between the metal casing of the laptop; the metal casing of the heatsink fan and the CPU.

Replacing the metal cover with ordinary scrap paper to make sure the "air" still flows out the vent remaing constant.

For all you Toshiba Tecra 8100 users; there's my notes on a successful repair job.
(p.s. before coming up with the idea to remove the tin casing from the heat sink fan I still had trouble booting when it cut out seconds after pressing the power button and typing in my password in the pre-windows/DOS like prompt - disconnecting and reconnecting the CPU along with the RTC battery helped guide me from A to B.)

well i dont think u can check.. but id like ur input and tell me the odds of messing up the system.

heres a picture of what I did. Wrote text in it xplaining whats what.

just a closer look at the connectors:

I used staples to connect the wires together.

A:pls check my modding for possible short circuits

So you're connecting the new case's fp audio connector to the old case's fp audio wire, which fits on the board correctly?
As long as you got the wires connected to each other properly it should work. How well does it stay together? If they don't stay together well, consider possibly electrical taping the connectors together.

Hi all,
I am looking for a metal case router (wireless 802.11b with 4 port switch and at least NAT, but would like SPI, MAC and other security features if possible). Many of them are flimsy plastic and I want a better quality wireless router than that. Also some of them have a strong plastic odor that gives me a headache. Sure they will outgass in time, but I prefer not to breathe that if I can advoid it. Most product descriptions don't list what the case is made of. Any assistance is apprecated.

I have Verizon lte wireless internet and have a metal shop building about 125 ft. away from the house. I want to be able to use a wifi tablet inside the building or at least the office. My tablet gets a good signal and works fine just outside the building , but when I go inside the metal blocks the signal. Is there an inexpensive way to get the wifi to pass through ? Is there any kind of small antenna that would be on the outside of the metal building and pass through the wall to another small antenna or would I need a outside antenna then a router on the inside ?

A:wifi into metal building

You have to define inexpensive. When you say Verizon LTE wireless Internet, what exactly does that mean? Are you using a MiFi/Jet Pack?

Hi, I have a wifi problem that I need help with if anyone could please?

I have sky broadband and run my pc and laptop wirelessly off it.

We have recently erected a metal shed in the garden, just outside the kitchen so not far from the house.

The intention was to have it as a pc and games room, with a playstation set up and a laptop using the wifi connection from the house, but have now discovered that the wifi will not go through the metal of the shed!!

Can anyone suggest a way of getting either a wired or wireless internet connection to the metal shed?

I have a spare wireless router.

Help would be much appreciated. Thanks

A:Wi-Fi won't penetrate metal shed

Yeah metal creates an unpenetrable wall for Wireless connections, it bounces off it really easily.. Your options would be to buy a Directional Wireless Antenna and direct it to the Shed, point it at a Windows or an Open Doorway..

Wireless Antenna's:http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicati...c.asp?CatId=374&name=Antennas and Accessories

The signal needs somewhere to enter, once inside that metal shed it should bounce around and find what it needs..

Other then that you would need to dig and place a wire under ground that connects to a splitter/hub, and branch off to each device from there.. however that is not generally a convient way at all, since you would need protective cover over the wires as well as it to be decently deep in the ground, then you have bugs and anything that digs that could damage the cord..

Hope this helps.

When u tried compatability mode which one did u use. For some games running in XP mode wont work either so you have to keep going and try each one. I've had to run a game in Windows 95 compatability even thought the game officially only runs on XP. Go figure.

I have both addons running fine but it was so long ago that I installed it I cant remember if I had any problems or not. If I get chance I'll have a go at reinstalling them and seeing if anything happens.

I'm trying to play Metal Fatigue on Windows 7 and I'm haviong severe graphic errors with both OpenGL and DirectX drivers for it, the game gives you a choice between the 2. I think the problem's probably driver related and I only really want help with the opengl one because the directx issue has been posted many times on the internet and never fixed.

Here's an image of the game with DirectX. Gameplay is displayed without errors, but the toolbar on the side is distorted enough to make the game unplayable. There is no lag, even at 1600x1200.
Here is an image of the game running with OpenGL drivers. nearly all textures are gone, a grid is shown on the terrain, and the game is extremely laggy, especially at higher resolutions. It's technically playable, but only on 640x480

I have a Dell XPS 410 with 2GB RAM, 2.4GHZ Quad Core, Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS with the latest drivers and dubious OpenGL support. OS is Windows 7, but the game shows the exact same problems as on Vista.

I understand that problems with Metal fatigue have been posted in many places online, but I haven't seen and solutions to the problems yet.
Help would be very much appreciated, this is one of my favorite games of all time.

Hello everyone,
New to this and sorry in advance
I work for a Boiler Tube Co.
We use software Metal Trax, hand in hand with Pervasive 10.
Long story short, updated our software / data. on Friday, all good, etc.
Go in to use it and when I try to access my quotes, orders, PO's , etc. get a RTE 13 - mismatch, (names specific fields with errors , aka "amount paid in" - a field in our SO table, a new field at that which came with the update from software.
Exact message: MetalTrax
Error Number :13
Error Message: Error reading sales_orders_headers.amount_paid in
Type mismatch

I can see these fields etc in the Pervasive control center but not sure what is wrong / what to do haha.
Anyone familiar with this, again, I am OK with computers but no a wiz
ANy help would be appreciated.

A:Pervasive / Metal Trax - RTE 13 mismatch

Welcome to TSG!
First I think the best place for support would be the software vendor? The update should have 'retro fitted' the existing records in your data base to be compatible with the update.

In general a type mismatch error indicates you are trying to perform a mathematically function on Character or Null data. Also joins to tables with missing or invalid data in the join will produce this error.

Since you mention the field is 'new' I suspect the field is null or empty. If you can, populate the field with a 0 or something numeric on your specific quote and test to see if the error is resolved.

I can't recommend a solution, I know nothing about the application, but this might point you in a direction to specifically ask the vendor for a long term fix.

Picked this game up for $15 and installed it ok. After the opening sequence has completed, a loading screen appears instructing you to 'Press the start button'. Sure enough when you hit 'Return' you go to the 'Options' screen for 'New Game' / 'Settings' etc. However hitting any of the 5 option in the menu - and you get booted back the loading screen with the 'Press start ..'

This happens over and over. Have tried other keys but cannot get into the game.

There are no errors per se - its not a driver or DirectX issue.

The only patches released are for errors related to Radeon Cards - which does not apply to me.

No other faults that I can determine.
Can anyone shed any light on what I may have missed here ?

Have a good week all.

A:Metal gear solid BIG PROBLEMS!

Well your machine is right on the minumum's for the game so I would suspect a memory issue. Make sure you close down everything running in the background before playing. Scan and defrag hard drive. Probably turn off some of the options to see if it helps the problem. Worse comes to worse it is a D3D game, update your directx. Make sure sound is set to low or most compatible.

I just bought this game and it's giving me no end of trouble - main problem being sound.
During the intro video, during the 'death music', during conversations on the Codec, all I hear is sort of super-loud fuzzy interference through my speakers. Sound effects and Background music are fine. With the nature of the game this has made it basically unplayable. My sound card is nVidia nForce 2 onboard sound by the way.
The graphics also seem to be jerky and not all that detailed, no matter what settings I choose. Now I have the original game on PS2 and it looked fab on that, I fully expected a brand new 2GHz machine with GeForce4 and 512 megs of RAM to handle it as well as my PS2 did but unfortunately it seems it doesn't.
There's no readme or documentation of any sort to help me out, the game has 'poor console conversion' written all over it really and I'd bring it back to swap for PS2 version only the PS2 one is double the price.

Im looking for some advise. I work for a small company that runs SBS2008 as a server for user authentication and file shares and that is it.

I preformed a backup of the entire system to allow for a bare metal recovery in the case the server crash and burned. I was trying to test the recovery by restoring to a VirtualBox VM. Obviously the hardware is different, and after the restore, the VM continued to Blue Screen and reboot. So Im asking for advice on how I can test the backup, or ways to test recovery so I know if our server does die I can be back up in a short about of time.

Purchasing third party software is out of the question here. I know all about explaining to the powers that be, that the cost of being down for a length of time is far greater than the cost of a third party software to allow backup and recovery to different hardware. Still being approved to purchase software is denied.

So I am left with the tools at hand, The SBS2008 Disk, The Backup Made from inside SBS2008, and any free tools on the net. Can someone help me work through this so I can be sure I can recover my data? Putting files back where they were is easy enough for me, but Im talking about restoring all the users profiles, Active Directory, Group Policy, etc. If I cannot restore this to different hardware ( and this might be the case if the server hardware dies and wee need a new server) than I need to be able to reload all our settings. I am running Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 Enterprise. I migrated my laptop's Windows 7 OS to VM and was able to boot to it in Hyper-V. I cloned my laptop first then sysprepped it with an unattend script and a batch file. The unattend install works
and the batch file runs during Windows setup on my bare metal laptop. When I do the same in Hyper-V, the batch file never runs.

Here's the process I took to migrate my laptop to VM and what I did to get it to run in Hyper-V to see if something along the way I messed something up:
-Used dism to capture the image.
-Applied the image to a vhdx.
-Attach the vhdx in Disk Management.
-Copied my unattend.bat, unattend.xml, and setup.bat scripts to the C: drive of the vhdx.
-Loaded the SYSTEM HIVE from the vhdx in Regedit.
-Changed the "Start" DWORD from 3 to 0 in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/test/ControlSet001/services/atapi", "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/test/ControlSet001/services/intelide", and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/test/ControlSet001/services/msahci"
-Unloaded the SYSTEM HIVE and detached the vhdx.
-Used Hyper-V to create a Generation 1 VM. Used the vhdx as the disk.
-Booted the machine up with error, but got rid of it by running a repair on Windows.
