After critical Lenovo update, ThinkPad L540 is bricked

Q: After critical Lenovo update, ThinkPad L540 is bricked

Running Windows 10. TYPE 20AV-CTO1WW After having performed the Lenovo update (as advised by the software, done this many times before) the laptop is now in a state in which it will continually restart, with the message "Configuration changed - restart the system" shown during the cycle. I have tried to break this cycle by pressing various keys, but no luck there. I then removed the main battery, AC power, and CMOS battery, and all this did was add the warning "0271: Real Time Clock Error - Check Date and Time Settings" to the above message. It won't boot from a recovery USB drive I made months ago for this computer. Long story short, a Lenovo update bricked my computer. It was working just fine before the update, and now it's a doorstop. I've seen that this error has plagued many ThinkPad owners, and the usual excuse is a motherboard problem. I really don't see how that's the issue. Anyone got anything?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First of all, let me explain the problem from the beginning. When everything is normal on the computer in the morning, when I run the computer in the morning, the screen is black, but I noticed that the computer is working. When I look carefully, the screen is black, but I saw it. I saw the screen is distorted. I put the screen back on the screen and I saw that it was black. The screen was showing for fifteen minutes before but now it has not. The screen that I removed from the working computer is black screen and when I look carefully, something appears.

Hello, For the last couple weeks my T530 has been nagging me to do a "critical system update" from Lenovo. Today I caved and ran the update. Turns out it was a bios update. After the update it said "Bios update successful" and then my screen went black. My laptop won't boot at all now the screen just stays black, no pre/post screen or anything.  I don't have access to another computer here so I can't make a recovery disk for a week or so. Any ideas on what I can do to try and resurrect this beast?  Ive tried many hard power offs to no avail.

Hi all, Need help on my Lenovo G40-70 that I've just bought 6 months ago where I accidently bricked the laptop after BIOS update. It seems during the BIOS updating process it when well but after 2nd reboot there's some message on the screen that the BIOS failed to update factory setting and it freeze on the message for quiet sometimes. After a long wait I decided to long press Start button for hard reboot. Then the scary part comes in where it seems the laptop can't longer shows the Lenovo logo & cannot even boot to Windows, just black screen. Hope anyone can help me on this and give some advice on what I'm going to do. I would like to tried myself first before ending up with warranty claim since I'm worried I've brick the warranty due to wrong BIOS update procedure....

A:Lenovo G40-70 Bricked by BIOS Update

hi mahdhir2005,

Im sorry to hear that.

I would suggest you call the Lenovo Technical Team regarding the Issue. If it is the BIOS that's causing the issue then there maybe no source or option to have it fixed without they're help or service.

If the BIOS software you downloaded was from a legit Lenovo Site and correct model, then I think It will be ok to Just report them what happened and ask for possible option.

Hope this helped
Thanks!

Hello,  I got an update from lenovo system update and I accepted the update. After the reboot, it went into the bios and I just selected "exit without saving". Then everything's dead now. The computer powers on, but it doesn't even show the Lenovo logo. When I try to go into the bios with that small button, the same thing happens. Is there anyway to recover the bios with a flash drive somehow? I found an instruction to recover the bios using the USB drive, but it needed a BIOS.PWH file which I don't know how to get for Lenovo Z510.  PLEASE HELP ME! I'm freaked out

Hi, I have a new Lenovo ideapad 120s which came with Windows 10. My daughter got a popup for a bios update and clicked without knowing what it was. After the bios update the screen is dark after reboot so I suspect the computer is now bricked. I found a tutorial for resetting the bios by disconnecting the battery, but that didn't work. I was wondering if this model has a way of overwriting the bios via usb (I've seen descriptions of such a solution for other Lenovo models)? Full name / model: Lenovo ideapad 120S-14IAPModel name: 81A5

Hi, i?ve update the laptop to te latest BIOS version due to the latest Intel amt bug. After the restart it showed the progress and finished it.An auto-restart was initiated and the screen stayed black. The system would not boot anymore in the normal way. After reading on the internet keeping the [Fn]-B pressed during boot and cycling power again (keeping the keys pressed) it boots windows normaly. The fault is in the startup of the computer during the 'boot-loader' I think. After that its possible just to boot and enter the BIOS-menu. Is there a way to restore the boot to normal functionality ? Some things I als tried;- Used wincrisis restore process with BIOS.WPHhttps://www.bios-mods.com/bios-recovery/phoenix-bios-recovery/I?ve managed to downloaded the BIOS but it?s a multi file bios, think that the wincrisis-fix won?t work because of that.- Reflashed the bios, initiating from windows. Regards, Arno

Hallo!

I'm considering building an external GPU setup for my laptop (thinkpad L540), wanted to check if anyone had done it. I saw it listed on techinferno's list of candidate systems, so I'm assuming it is possible. Does the L540's PCI slot allow for this sort of thing (or might there be another way of doing it?)? I guess my main concern is that there's some aspect of that connection that won't support an eGPU and this whole thing would be a waste. Whether you've done it or not, any insight is appreciated!

I am trying to 'dual display' my L540 to my TV. I have a mini dvi port (or whatever it is!) converter plugged into that port with an HDMI lead plugged into that and then into an HDMI socket on my TV. I assumed this would then be dead easy to just select dual monitors or similar and the laptop output would be duplicated on the TV. However I'm not getting anything on the TV. Is there some other setting I need to change other than in Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Display>Change Display Settings? Under Muliple Displays I select Duplicate these displays and Apply but all that happens is that the display resolution on the laptop goes really big ie nothing appears on my TV. It feels like the laptop is not even detecting anything attached to the mini DVI port - would this be driver related or is there something else I'm overlooking? Really want to fix this as I'm hoping to be able to play Youtube vids (with sound) from the laptop through the TV and maybe also Amazon movies. Any help gratefully received!!

I have a thinkpad L540 and I did a function (fn) and control (ctrl) key swap in Bios and use with a function lock on. Whenever I have both of these on, certain function hotkeys such as mute, lower volume, settings, and the signal/wifi hotkeys don't work. When I set the fn and control key to original, or don't use function lock, all hotkeys work fine, but I find it quite inconvenient to use my laptop without these features. I've tried to download the hotkey integration, or the power management driver, but they haven't worked. Has anyone else had these problems?or Can anyone give me any possible solutions?

I recently got a used thinkpad L540. The previous owner apparently had to redownload windows 10 while trying to change start up setting for using linux. I'm using windows 10 on it.I did the function (fn) and control key swap in BIOS and everything was working fine for a while, but one day, most of the hot keys stopped working whenever I have the function lock on (which I like to keep it on to use the usual function keys). For hot keys such as mute and lowering volume, whenever I press those keys with the function key (which is originally the control key, since I did fn-ctrl swap), to use the hot keys while on function lock, I get a beep sound and nothing happens. I have swapped the function key and control key back to how it was, and it wasn't a problem, but I really don't like the function and control key position in this laptop, and use the usual function keys often enough that this problems bothers me. Oh and there is no problems when I have the function lock off. I've tried downloading the keyboard driver for thinkpad, which it seems like this computer was missing, and this problems still continues

I've had my L540 for a couple of years, and it was starting to show its age. I copied my necessary files onto a hard drive and started a full factory reset just to clean the thing out. It started out all fine, but the progress has frozen. The screen shows the startup "Lenovo" logo and "Resetting this PC 99%", but it's been stuck like this for about 12 hours. The loading wheel animation is still going. Not sure exactly if or what I should do about this, but the fact that it's been stuck for so long is a little concerning. Any advice? I'm a little scared to mess with it too much because I know it's in a delicate state during factory reset.

Hi Lenovo Forum,I wanted to ask for help and advice on whether there is a need for my Flex 4 laptop to update its BIOS.It's my first time opening the Lenovo companion app that came with the laptop and I noticed that there is one critical update.  Here is the installation history: Here is the system info from the companion app Now my question is, do I have to update this or simply ignore it?Just to clarify, I'm not really a tech savvy person. I am unsure if this is safe or not. I read from other sites that updating the BIOS may have risks of bricking the laptop and make it unusable. So, I really need help if I should proceed with the update or leave as it is. The current situation right now is, everything seems to be working fine. I am near my warranty expiration. The only complaints that I have is that whenever I leave my laptop and set it to sleep by 11PM, I open it the next morning and the battery is all drained to 1%. This does not happen all the time, but for it may happen quite frequently. Here is my battery information And one other complain is that, even if I set it to sleep mode, sometimes, I do hear the laptop fan go really loud. I am also not sure why that happens. But I hope all my additional information would be helpful on determining if my computer has issues and if I do really need to update the BIOS. Any type of help would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is quite confusing.

I've been getting the PXE-E61 "Media test failure. Check cable" problem for a while now. I bypassed the problem by installing Ubuntu through a flash drive. With ubuntu installed the computer runs ok, but now I'd like to get Windows 10. There's a few problems.  1. My flash drives doesn't work anymore with the comp. It can't seem to finish copying files so it can't copy the windows 10 flash drive installer.  2. I thought the problem might be my hard drive. I bought a new hard drive and it fit fine, but now I get the PXE-E61 error again. Maybe it's because there's no OS on the new drive. I could really use some advice. It seems like I need to fix my comp before I can figure out how to install Windows 10.

I restarted the computer and it beeped as it was loading, giving a message that said "Keyboard not detected." Once windows booted up, same problem. I shut down and restarted, same problem. I then unplugged everything, took the battery out, put it back together, and now it works fine. I'm a little concerned about this. Is this an indication of a possible hardware failure, or could something else more innocuous be causing it? Thanks in advance!

Hoping that someone on this forum can help me. I have a 1 yr old thinkpad T460p which is refusing to boot at all after setting Intel AMT to be disabled in BIOS - its bricked. After making this change, laptop rebooted and displayed message "unconfiguring..." After that, it went to just a white cursor in the top left corner that doesn't flash. I left it for5 minutes or so before trying to reboot and now... I can't get anything except this white cursor. The machine still seems responsive - I can turn keyboard locks on and off and if I do control alt delete I see the screen flash and then come back to the cursor so it is definitely rebooting. I've tried rebooting and holding down F1, F8 as well as pretty much every other key on the keyboard. I've taken out battery and AC, held power for 30 seconds then plugged back in and its still stuck! Does anyone have an idea how to get this laptop to boot again? I can't enter BIOS at all, just this white cursor in the corner of the screen.

A:help! thinkpad t460p bricked after disabling intel AMT - no BIOS/UEFI

First, do you have warranty remaining?  If yes, call for service; don't take it apart.

If no, do the same thing you did (remove battery, etc.) plus disconnect the coin-cell (CMOS) battery.  You remove the back cover and it is to the lower right.  Let it sit for 30 seconds before putting it back together.  This will reset the BIOS to default settings.  DON'T DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A SUPERVISOR (BIOS) PASSWORD THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW.

Hello Everyone, I am considering the purchase of a specific power bank for my L540 laptop. The product is the Vinsic 30000mah. I can't seem to get clarification on whether my Lenovo laptop will successfully hook up with the PB and take the charge. As far as I can tell, the PB has a lot of muscle and is well-recommended. The PB comes with 8 adaptors; for Lenovo products it lists a  7.9*10 mm adaptor. It says it has 3 output ports: 1 DC output up to 19V 3.5A, with a max output current of 4.5A; and 2 Smart USB outputs, with output up to 5V 2.4A.  It also says it has 2 Input ports: 1 DC input and 1 Micro USB input. I am uncertain if the specs on my L540 make it compatible with the features listed shown above. Can someone with expertise advise me if I'm Ok to go ahead with the purchase based on the features? Many thanks!

Hey folks,

New user here. Just updated my laptop, a Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon, to 1.26/1.19 bioses, from the Lenovo website. After the BIOS updated, my PC rebooted and immediately BSODed with 0x0000009C (0x0000000000000006, 0xFFFFF880009EEB30, 0x00000000FE000000, 0x0000000000801136).

I am unable to do anything- system repair, safe mode, etc. I also do not have a CD drive on this machine so no OEM repair either! I am typing this from my phone.. Also got a new job where I need this baby and majorly worried now. If anyone can please help, I would be greatly appreciative.
Thanks in advance.
