Q: "Application cannot be executed. the file hpqste08.exe is infected. please activate your anti-virus software."

I'm typing this from my laptop.
The house PC got infected with that sorta virus and I want to know how to fix it.
I noticed a lot of users have this sorta virus but idk if each case is unique or if its a general sorta case.

I'm going to try this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic229334.html

But I want to make sure that it won't kill my computer if it isn't exactly the same xD And if it doesn't work I'll come back here.
A lot of users have the same case as me I think - malware trying to make me activate some sorta anti-spyware program or something, random lewd internet pop-ups, warnings, also the task bar has like 500 windows update icons. There are two windows that I can't move - one says ATTENTION! SPYWARE ALERT! with a shield and all that, and the other says Antivirus Software Alert and is in the bottom right hand corner. They both have that windows shield on the bar where theres usually an X and all that, and both bars are red. Also that little windows error thing that has the "application cannot be executed..."
Task Manager won't start either.
:3 please help. In the mean time I might try that forum's suggestion cause we're kinda restless and we're not sure if it gets worse the longer you wait or whatever (also the task bar is freaking me out/making me mad. too many icons eating my start bar).

Preferred Solution: "Application cannot be executed. the file hpqste08.exe is infected. please activate your anti-virus software."

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

And mozilla saves the MBAM install file wherever it wants so when I want to go to the file location the folder closes before I can do anything -_-Edit: Yeah apparantly 'explorer.exe' is infected. The right corner where the time is and stuff on the start bar keeps having that speech bubble saying the same thing as the error notification, but the .exe file is different each time. Like every second, the previous bubble only disappears cause its being replaced by a new one. I guess all my files are being consumed by this malware demon. Or its a lie, but idk.Edit: Ok, so the house PC is Windows Vista anyway xD and Ima cry. o_oEdit: I'm gonna try that ComboFix thing o_o From here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f100/problems-with-viruses-and-antivirus-software-391140.htmlSomebody stop me now. Hello all

First time here so please bear with me. I am trying to fix a friend's Vista laptop. When booted up shortly after it receives the following popup (in the middle of the screen):

Security Warning: Application cannot be executed. The file xxx is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?

In the bottom right of the screen above the system tray two more popups. 1) same as above 2) Antivirus software alert stating "your computer is being attacked by an internet virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan - dropper or similar. Details: attack from IP-address xxx, port 60552. Attacked port: 55557. Threat BankerFox.a Do you want to block this attack.

In normal windows mode, nothing can be done (well minimal). I can't get any webpage to load. However, if I let the above messages stay up, shortly after tons of web page windows will come up - all with various porn/viagra sites.

This laptop does have an OLD version of Kaspersky security suite. I tried to manually update the definitions but it wouldn't let me (I believe because the trial version it was on expired). I tried to remove Kaspersky but nothing happens when I try. I can't pull up task manager.

I can get into Safe mode and don't receive all these popups, but not alot I can do in safe mode. I can't remove Kaspersky there, says I must do in normal mode.

I did download Microsoft Malware tool on a thumb drive from another computer and run it... Read more

Hello there, my name is Elliot and I am running a relatively high powered laptop on Windows Vista. Recently I have had an issue, by which every time I go to open an application - other than Mozilla Firefox(?!) - it tells me that "Application cannot be executed. The file (programshortname).exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?". I then am greeted by a "Windows Security Alert" balloon, that reminds me that the computer is infected. Further, I then get a "Antivirus software alert" from a program I have, for a fact, never installed called Security Suite that tells me of an Infiltration Alert, and alleged 'details' of it such as the IP I am being attacked from and a port number. Furthermore, I receive another Antivirus Software Alert from the same program I have never installed in the center of the screen, headed in "vunerabilities found." Then, rather weirdly, if I leave it long enough without closing these "security alerts" I am brought to an ADULT website, I pray you understand. Please help me to fix my computer, I am desperate! Thanks,Elliot

A:"Application cannot be executed. The file *.exe is infected."

Anyone?

I got some kind of virus that would not let me access Task Manager, nor would it let me start up in safemode with f8 at boot. It kept a small red dot with a white X on my system process bar and constantly asked me to download antispyware. It also sucked my computer to a standstill. I couldnt access the internet on the computer because it was at 100% in processes. So I went into msconfig inside windows and set my boot to diagnostic so I could get into safemode. But i couldnt get onto the internet from there nor could i use my usb ports to transfer files. So i downloaded the GMER scan file and the Combofix scan file onto a usb chip from another computer and rebooted into normal mode and drug the two files onto my desktop then went back to msconfig and got into safe mode again. This is the only way i could scan anything because of the performance. the gmer scan still took 3 hours and the text file is attached. then i tried the combofix scan but couldnt install the resolution console because i couldnt access the internet. so i perfomed the scan anyway. it also took 3 hours and rebooted several times on its own. this text file is also attached. now my computer is almost fixed. it boots fine, accesses task manager, doesn't have popups but...it is still running at 100%. thru task mgr i found two files using 50% each. they are "Transferagent.exe" and "IntuitsyncManager.exe". once i stop these processes everything is fine until i reboot. Hi guys! I'm having a terrible time with this virus I've got on my computer. I cannot open any programs other than firefox... well as far as I've seen without a pop up saying "Application cannot be executed the file soandso.exe is infected, do you want to activate your antivirus software?" Clicking no does nothing as does clicking yes. I'm not all that great with computers... obviously or I wouldn't be asking for your help! ;) So if anyone can help me with this I would be so appreciative! Thanks for your time.

Running Windows XP. I suddenly started getting Windows "bubble" pop-up as follows:

Windows Security Alert - Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan you computer. Your system might be at risk now.
I'm pretty certain this is a bogus message due to the grammar errors and such. I have not "clicked here" as the prompt suggests.

I had AVG previously installed and running regularly, but when I attempt to run it I get the following:

Application cannot be executed. The file xxxx is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?
Again, I'm confident this is a bogus message. I have always clicked "No" in response to this.
I downloaded Malwarebytes on another PC and installed from a USB stick it onto the infected one. It installed, but when I attempt to run it, I get the same message.
I attempted to call up the Windows Task Manager to see if anything rogue was running. When I press control-alt-delete, the Task Manager pops up for a second, then disappears and I get the "Application cannot be executed" error.
Looking for suggestions as to how to best proceed.

Thanks.

Two days ago, the symptoms began. First "Google Installer has stopped working" would pop up every five minutes or so. Upon starting the computer "MSAScui cannot be initialized" (or something like that) and "Windows Defender User Interface Has Stopped Working." THEN I started hearing advertisements. I couldn't see them, and no programs seemed to be open. But voices discussing everything from Longer Lasting Cough Medicine to Madagascar Tourism would begin to chatter every so often. Then fake anti-spyware warnings would pop up in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then links to pornographic websites would pop up on the desktop.

This was bothersome, so I downloaded and ran SpyBot S&D and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The problems stopped for an hour. THEN Google Installer Has Stopped Working came back. And the ads! Plus a DIFFERENT anti-spyware warning. "Antivirus software alert" is the heading. It informs me that:

INFILTRATION ALERT
Your computer is being attacked by an Internet Virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan-dropper or similar."
....
Do you want to block this attack?

And bigger red boxes periodically pop up, saying "Spyware Alert! Activate Your antivirus software." What's more, while pornographic shortcuts no longer appear on the desktop, pornographic websites (and erectile dysfunction sites!) keep opening in new internet explorer windows.

Hello,I was just doing some programming on my Vista laptop and suddenly a number of windows popped up, including three or so UAC dialogs, a Windows security dialog and something from whichever anti-virus I have (McAfee I think, oddly I can't remember). I clicked cancel etc. for the UACs. At some point Explorer, Opera and the dialogs closed, and I now have:Microsoft Security Essentials Alert, with "Potential threat details" and a huge list of virus scanners, each with an empty progress bar under the heading "scan result"Security Suite, an unbranded window suggesting I have a number of threatsMessages saying "Application cannot be executed" as I said in the thread titleThe space key being `pressed` repeatedly - meaning that the occasional pop-up (other "Application cannot be executed" ones I think) gets closed immediately, except for some reason not the one mentioned aboveI believe this means I can't run any .exe files, but I can't do anything at all anyway because the space key is being sent to Windows continuously. Task manager certainly won't start. What to do? Restart in safe mode? Thanks very much for any help.

Hello, lets see if we can get in and at it like this. You are correct about Safe Mode. Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking How to enter safe mode(XP)Using the F8 MethodRestart your computer. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. Select the option for Safe Mode with Networking using the arrow keys. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode. >>>> Download this file and doubleclick on it to run it. Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.

Hi

I have a netbook, a Samsung NC10, which has been working fine for around 4 months. Today, I was browsing google results for "studio xps 16 reviews" - I am getting this laptop delivered in 3 weeks time if that explains - and almost immediately my firefox, note not i.e, freezes up, and I start getting windows security alerts pinging themselves at me.

As you can see by the pictures, there is at least 20-30 identical icons bottom right of screen.

http://s629.photobucket.com/albums/uu14/Goldeneye175/

The message is "Windows security alert. Application cannot be executed. The file wscntfy.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now."

Periodically, it also automatically boots up a firefox new window and goes to some horrendous site, porno.org or viagra.com - you get the message.

I can open firefox, but I havent been able to get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to start once installed.

---

If anyone could please help me - I would be indebted to them!
Many thanks

I've been getting constant pop-ups on my toolbar saying everything is infected. My internet still seems to work fine, but opening things on my computer is impossible. I've got lots of icons in the bottom right of the toolbar, all yellow, all saying that a file is in infected and every now and again I get a pop-up, a loud trumpet sound, and it says along the lines of "you are infected. do you want to open your anti-virus software?"
I have been looking around some forums and used an Rkill.com file which immediately stopped all these pop-ups but I'm sure it hasn't just killed all the infection.

I've tried running Ad- aware in safe mode- ( I can only run things in safe mode. It will not allow me to run smitfraud for some reason. The other issue is that she has dial up so I'm going to have to download stuff here and run it at her house.

Hey all,

First, let me say how glad I am to have found this website. You guys are so generous to give your time to help us non-tech savvy folks out.

Earlier today, my laptop was hit with a virus (I think it may be something to the effect of Win 32/Nuqel.E, if that is a virus.) I kept getting the error message "Application cannot be executed. The file rstrui.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"" The .exe file that was infected would change, but rstrui is one that popped up a lot. If I pressed yes, it would automatically open up this virus software in my Internet Explorer (AVS, I think), and it would block all other webpages, saying "This site may cause harm to your computer."

I haven't gotten the "Application cannot be executed..." error message for a while now (probably due to the scans I performed listed below), but am still having issues with my computer:

-Internet Explorer and Google Chrome are both not functioning properly, although Mozilla seems to be doing OK (knock on wood).
-If I go to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, I get a message that says "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog." and "Failure - security options.
-Randomly, my printer's, HP Deskjet All-in-One Series, installation series will pop up and say "Fatal error during installation" though I wasn't trying to install anything related to my printer - it actually isn't even hooked up. The t... Read more

Download OTL.exe to your desktop.
Double-Click on OTL to run it.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

netsvcs
%USERPROFILE%\appdata\local /s /30
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
CREATERESTOREPOINT
%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

First off, I CAN NOT run dds.scr or GMER Rootkit Scanner. Please continue reading.

I'm currently staying at my Mum's house interstate, and their home computer (Windows XP, SP3) is pretty much unuseable at the moment. Trying to run much else other than Firefox gets an error message of:

"Application cannot be executed. The file xxxxx.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"

Clicking yes opens a IE window to purchase antivirus software.

From time to time a red and white pop up appears in the bottom right corner:

"Antivirus software alert
-----------------------
Infiltration Alert
Your computer is being attacked by an Internet Virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan - dropper or similar."

and after that it lists some details (unsure if that is safe or relevant to post here?) and asks if you want to block the attack.

Additionally a cream coloured speech bubble comes up off of an icon for "Antivirus Live" which reads (as written below so yes the grammar is poor):

"Windows Security Alert
Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan you computer. Your system might be at risk now."

Clicking this bubble runs an Antivirus Live scan, that can't resolve any of the issues it finds unless you buy the program.

Other symptoms include random IE pop-ups goi... Read more
