Windows 10 Tamper Protection Security Feature

Q: Windows 10 Tamper Protection Security Feature

Article on enhancing Win 10 security

Nifty new feature that comes with Win 10 1903

How to Enable the Windows 10 Tamper Protection Security Feature

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tu...indows-10-tamper-protection-security-feature/

With the release of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft introduced a new security feature called Tamper Protection that protects security settings for Windows Defender antivirus from being disabled by malware or third-party programs.

When enabled, Tamper Protection will only allow Windows Defender related settings to be changed when done through the Windows Security settings screen. If a program, such as malware, or even PowerShell tries to change security settings or Microsoft Defender preferences, Tamper Protection will block the settings from being modified.

Due to this, Tamper Protection is an integral part of the Windows 10 security environment and should be enabled by all users for increased security and protection from malicious programs. Click to expand...

Directions follow in the article on how to enable.

edit: I just checked mine and found it was already enabled.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello TopicRunning NIS11 and no prob Disable Real Time via rt.click ICON....Disable AutoProtect, Disable Smart Firewall, and for good measure Turn On Silent Mode. My query is about Norton Product Tamper Protection. Does Norton Product Tamper Protection need to be OFF... Does Norton Product Tamper Protection need to be disabled as part of Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs.Posted same question back in June....no answer. So, I'm trying again. Thanksbjm_

A:Norton Product Tamper Protection

Norton Product Tamper Protection (included in Norton 2006 and later products) is a security feature enabled by default that prevents outside programs (unknown, suspicious, or threatening applications) from making changes to the Norton software. NPTP protects NAV processes so other processes cannot access them (inject code or modify thread execution), it doesn't matter that current user has permission on them he won't be able to access Norton Anti-virus processes. This security feature can prevent Windows System Restore from changing Norton files, resulting in a "Restoration Incomplete" message and you may need to Temporarily turn off Norton Product Tamper Protection.Disabling your anti-virus programs is sometimes necessary when using specialized tools in order to ensure they do not interfere with the fixes they are designed to perform. It is also necessary to prevent the detection of those tools as a threat by the anti-virus which may attempt to remove them. If you are following instructions to disable a Norton product in order to receive assistance with malware removal, it would not hurt to disable this feature as well. Most security fix tools do not modify an anti-virus program but this feature may detect certain actions by the fix tool as suspicious and prevent it from working properly.

I'm getting a Symantec Tamper Protection Alert each time I reboot my computer. When I try to click on the Symantec icon in the taskbar, it states that the file is infected. After a while, an alert appears on my screen and it begins to flash non-stop. When this happens I can not do anything on my computer. I also get a security alert in the taskbar that states that the following files are infected (1)savui.exe, (2) symcorpri.exe and (3) rundll.exe. I have been unable to catch all of the information within the prompt that flashes on my screen but I have been able to make out some of the info.

Hello there guys, I just to start this topic because both Lenovo Support and the store where I bought this laptop didn't still answer as today. even though my laptop has still full warranty? My problem was that I activated Device Guard in BIOS which automatically activated a lot of other options, like the Supervisor Password, but the "funny" thing about it, is that it didn't asked me anything at all... so I had to type no password. Not knowing Device Guard so well I thought this was a normal behavior and indeed it worked as always for like 3 weeks! Then since I wanted to try to boot Clonezilla to make a full backup of my system, I tried to boot my USB-Stick which didn't work because of Device Guard. Then I decided to deactivated that in BIOS, but for the first time ever the BIOS really asked me for this Supervisor Password, which I didn't know, so I tried 2 times something random (to try if there was a default one active) and nothing worked, then I gave an empty password and strangely enough it worked out... but all the options to change something connected to security were grayed out. So, since I though this was a wanted security feature from Device Guard, I went on and searched online for further solutions. There I found out that one can also use this Lenovo BIOS app from the Desktop to modify the same settings one could normally just through the BIOS. But guess what? To all tries to modify anything, I got the response "Access Denied" even to settings... Read more

It sounds loke you had a power-on password and a supervisor password.  You unplugged the CMOS battery, which reset the power-on but not the supervisor password.  Now you need to supply the supervisor password to start  There is no master or backdoor password.  The only choices are to remember the password or replace the motherboard.

First off - warranty is out apparently.  Even though I remember checking the box for a 2 year extension, I am now being told I didn't and that I am SOL.  So that's one thing I'll deal with later...When trying to access the BIOS, I would only see a black screen.  I tried hooking an external monitor up to it, nothing, the monitor doesnt register until after the initial boot sequence. I then figured something must be up with the BIOS.  Went to Lenovo.com and found the updates, updated the BIOS along with everything else.  Still broken.    So I opened the bottom, disconnected the battery and the CMOS battery, held down the reset button on the motherboard for 10-15 seconds, did the same for the power button.  Put it all back together.  Hit the power button, see the Lenovo logo and then: System Security:  Bottom Cover Tamper DetectedSo now I am assuming it is asking for the password and the date, but the screen is blank.  I am now left with a completely bricked computer.  Whats even more awesome is that I noticed this when I was trying to fix the suddenly inoperable fingerprint scanner, tried updating the drivers/uninstalling/reinstalling/etc, then I was going into the BIOS to make sure it was setup properly in there....and thats when I noticied the BIOS only provided a black screen. The diagnostics screen did work before I opened the bottom cover, I ran a full diagnostic on everything anf found no... Hi,

I'm wondering why Microsoft persists not to include an easy right-clic feature to protect folders and files in Windows?
Like in user's accounts protected with password, why we can't do the same for folders and files to protect them?
Right-clic on a folder (or file)> protect>set password>OK! it is done!
Easy, handy and secure feature!
Where can we suggest to MS?

Hi there! I'm not very talented when it comes to computers, but I did recognize that something was not quite right. I was on the web, and all of a sudden my browser shut down, and then this thing called "Security Protection" started running a scan on my computer. After I clicked "cancel scan" it wouldn't let me open anything. I was able to open "task manager" and close the program, but it says that everything on my computer is infected.

I shut it off and booted up in safe mode and found out that it is actually a new rogue virus that has started. When I booted up this morning in normal mode, it wouldn't even let me open task manager. It's like it has completely taken over my computer.

McAfee never registered that something was wrong, so I just switched to Norton which isn't picking up on it either. Which I completely don't understand. I also haven't been to any new websites within the past few days. Just facebook, netflix, and e-mail. Where could I have picked up a virus?

Does anyone know anything about this virus? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I start school in a few days and I really need my computer. Thanks!

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good anti virus app. You might want to supplement it with the free versions of MalwareBytes (use it to do periodic scans manually) and SpywareBlaster (remember to update the definitions every week or so). And there is NOTHING more important than "smart computing" (don't open email links unless you are absolutely certain you know what they are, don't go to questionable websites or download potentially harmful items from the web, etc).

Don't worry about it, as long as you know that McAfee is running correctly, disregard Windows Security center. It is probably a bug. I had that problem when I first installed Avira.

Note: The scan just finished and the infections were moved to the vault... what exactly does this mean?

For some reson, Windows Security Center says that Virus Protection is not found even though I have my antivirus on. My AV is Microsoft Security Essentials.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling MSE and Windows Security Center still keeps saying that I don't have an AV on even though I do. I just got done doing full scans with MSE and with Super AntiSpyware and the both came up clean. I don't know what's going on.

Another thing I might mention is that when I tried to do a system restore, I couldn't do it because apparently it had been turned off, even though I swore I had it set to on before.

Could anyone help? Thank you!

Hello. You have an active rootkit on your machine. With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team. Please read the information about getting started. After you have followed the steps in that guide, I would like you to start a new thread HERE and include a link to this thread. It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. The HJT team is very busy, so it could be several days before you receive a reply. But rest assured, help is on the way!Due to the nature of this infection it is likely that you will be unable to run traditional scanning utilities or run a full scan with RootRepeal as directed in the Preparation Guide linked above. If this is the case, you should still create your new thread in the HJT forum, but instead of DDS and full RootRepeal logs you should post your partial RootRepeal log (the one you just generated for me), as well as a log generated by this special utility. Note that the utility takes some time to run, so don't worry if it appears that nothing is happening.Sorry I couldn't do more for you here; they'll be able to help in HJT.~Blade

Hi,

I can no longer find where to access the Security Essentials that is built in on Windows 7. I've tried searching on Google but it keeps claiming it needs to be installed when I know it's built-in as I used it a little over a month ago.

Also is their any difference between the built in client and Microsoft Security Essentials. Thanks

A:Microsoft Security Essentials (Built-In Windows 7 protection)

The built in version is "windows defender" (just search for defender and you will find it) and although it uses the same virus definitions as Security Essentials I don't think it offers the same level of protection or options as MSE itself. Installing MSE automatically disables windows defender.
I would go ahead and install MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

In today?s world, the market for cyber-attacks on businesses is wide-reaching and attacks are increasingly high-profile and successful in execution. We?re seeing network breaches resulting from techniques as simple as username and password theft. In a couple of recent cases, hackers infiltrated Fortune 500 companies using stolen usernames and passwords which gave them access to point of sale systems and the credit card data being processed with them. The attacks resulted in the theft of millions of credit card numbers which quickly ended up in the black market. Recently, the New York Times reported that 1.2 billion... Read more

Hello thrax44, and welcome to BleepingComputer.com! I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. The TDSS Trojan Horse is a backdoor/rootkit trojan. Such a piece of malware allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.Rootkits and backdoor trojans are very dangerous because they compromise system integrity by making changes that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes. Rootkits are used by Trojans to conceal its presence (hide from view) in order to prevent detection of an attacker's software and make removal more difficult. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. They can disable your antivirus and security tools to prevent detection and removal. Remote attackers use backdoors as a means of accessing and taking control of a computer that bypasses security mechanisms. This type of exploit allows them to steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which is send back to the hacker. Guys - can someone please help me!!!!===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it ... I already have a license and am about to install it, but would like to know if there is an ideal configuration (I read something about it it doesn't provide the best protection for 0-days and you need to change the HIPS settings). I've been using Eset products for years and presently have Smart Security v8 installed. Operation is smooth with a low resource impact and I have never been infected. That's about all I ask for in a security product.

As far as a "best for you configuration" I suggest you present your question on the Eset user forum

 Hi
I am using Windows 7 Professional on a Precision T3610 desktop machine.
Some time ago I spent time uninstalling the Dell software which came with the computer.
However not all has been removed, as some folders remain in C:/ ProgramData/Dell. These are:  CommndUpdate. Dell DataProtection. Digital Delivery and Drivers.
There are eight files in the Dell Data Protection folder, which is the one causing the trouble.
When I boot my computer, first up comes a box saying Dell Data Protection/Security Tools.. Please Wait.
Then after about 3-5 minutes a box comes up and says: “The Biometric Functionality Is Not Working” and two options are given: “Log On Without Biometric Functionality” or “Wait 30 Seconds and Prompt again.
I choose The “Without Biometric” option and then the normal Windows & startup proceeds.
It has become a right pain. Anyone any ideas how I can rid myself of this problem?
Thanks

Hello:
I got this problem for a long time I tried to reinstall my dell m4800 three time still does not change anything.
I am having Dell M4800 Precision Workstation, I recently install windows 8.1 on it. I installed the Dell data protection | security tool, it's running fine. I can login through fingerprint and password fine every time. However, whenever windows 8.1 install an update that requires restart to finish install, right after I restart, I input my password, swipe my fingerprint, but system keep saying login is incorrect, I just can not login. I use restart, the laptop won't restart, it shows restarting for 1 minute or 2 and goes back to login screen, not power off and on at all. I have to press power button to power down my laptop and power on again in order to logon, and after that, windows just running slow, I have to reboot several times in order to recover its speed. And I tried resinstall windows and everything 3 times the problem keep showing up, and I pay attention to windows update, I notice that as long as the windows update requires a reboot, the problem will showing up, there is not particular update causing this problem, anyone have any idea?

A:Dell Data protection | Security tools prevent me from login after windows install update

Looking at how old this post is and the fact that there are no answers from Dell's "finest", I doubt my issue will be addressed either.
My issue involves the same POS software. I can log into the laptop just fine and enroll a finger for my domain admin account, HOWEVER - this software is preventing me from using MS Remote Desktop.  RD client loads and I can supply my username and password, but the client locks up when I click connect.  I'd like to be able to log into my laptop with my finger, but I can't have this software installed with this problem that it causes.  When I uninstall it I can log into Remote Desktop without a problem.  This has to be fixed.  I am running Windows 8.1 Pro x64.
