T460s Thinkpad battery issue

Q: T460s Thinkpad battery issue

Hello,I have a user here who has a T460s laptop who's batteries are no longer holding a sufficient charge. Pretty sure the laptop has 2 (internal) batteries. When the use takes the laptop out of the office, it's losing power afterabout an hour, maybe an hour and a half. After an hour, I was able to open a chat session with a tech, who said if we clicked on the battery icon down in the sys.tray, there'd be an indicator if the battery/batteries were bad. However, we did that and there is no such indicator oralert. Clicking on the same batttery icon and then clicking on Battery Settings, there are no notifications posted in the windowthat opens giving any indication of any issues with the batteries. Despite that, the batteries no longer retain the charge they once did. Is there any onboard diagnostic that can be run to determine which, or both batteries are bad? Or any other locationwhere there might be helpI need to weigh the cost of replacing the batteries vs. having the user get a new laptop. Thanks very much! Jim

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After upgrading the BIOS, I am having an issue with my battery. I finally got around to troubleshooting an outstanding issue with my RAM (It was maxing out at 10 of my 20gb of RAM), I found that updating my BIOS resolved the issue. I purchased the laptop in May 2016, and this was the first time I had updated my BIOS. I used Lenovo Solution Center / Vantage to run the updates. I updated my BIOS to N1CET68W (6/20/18). While troubleshooting I ran battery report, and I don't think it is a coincidence that the date I updated the BIOS on is also the date at which one of my batteries stopped working - Attached with a line drawn for when I updated the BIOS. My battery now caps out at 62%. Battery 1: 68% and charging. Battery 2: 0%. Battery 2 will not charge any more. Battery 1: 00HW022, Sanyo. Design Capacity: 23510 mWh, full charge capacity: 17840mWh (Acceptable degradation for 2 year old battery)Battery 2: 01AV406, SMP. Design Capacity: 26060 mWh, full charge capacity: 1770mWh (Significant drop-off once BIOS updated). I have already performed laptop surgery and made sure both batteries are connected. Unplugged both of them, and hard reset my laptop (holding power button for ~2 minutes with batteries out). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and then updating them. Windows 10 x64.

Hello, dear community. Yesterday I got this message when turning on my ThinkPad E560:"The battery installed is not supported by this system..."Therefore the laptop does not turn on without a power cable attached and shuts down immediately if I unplug the cable after it booted. The thing is that I only have a genuine battery that was delivered with this laptop. I bought this laptop only 2 weeks ago, and it worked perfectly fine until now. Any suggestions?

Hi all, It has been about a month since I received the new X1 Extreme, and it has been quite good so far, but today, for some unknown reason, I've run into some apparent battery issues. I charged my computer overnight yesterday, and when I tried using it in class today, it wouldn't start. The red light on the ThinkPad logo wasn't flashing at all, so something was off. I tried turning it on many times, but nothing happened.  When I came home, I plugged it in and it allowed me to turn it on, but it was stuck at 46% charge and wouldn't move (even after an hour - a period of time sufficient to charge the computer up to 80%). Then, as I was writing this post, a loud 2 bell ringing sound came on and the computer shut down. When I started it up again (connected to the AC adapter), the Lenovo Vantage battery icon displayed an "X" and the Windows battery appeared empty. I made sure to back up everything and updated BIOS and other drivers just in case, but nothing seemed to work. If I disconnect the AC adapter, the computer immediately dies. Like this, the computer is no longer useful to me since I need it on the go.  I'll contact Lenovo support once my schedule frees up a bit, but if this has happened before and you've found a solution, I'd like to get this back to normal as soon as possible. Thanks,  Reilly

I'm supporting T460s and T560s for my job and in the last month have had 3 battery issues occur out of no where. I'm using Windows 10 64-bit. I'd like to find a solution from the forums or at least a way to find what is causing this so I can plan for other laptops to go bad.  In the last month, I've dealt with 3 Thinkpads that have had a sudden change of heart about finding Battery #2. Nothing special happened. I booted, looked at the system information to see if this one has the specs to setup for a specific user and BAM - "Battery 2 not found". I was really hoping to get this all setup and out to a user who's using a 5 year old laptop.  I've ran Lenovo's System Update; I've updated Windows; I've downloaded the Power Management software from Lenovo yet still this battery is not found. I took it apart to ensure the battery was seated correctly. I re-imaged it from an image from last summer. Nothing.  Are these faulty batteries? Does that battery recall need to be expanded again? Is it the Motherboard? Is this a string of bad luck? How do I identify what the cause is? I refuse to believe this is coincidence.

A:ThinkPad (T430) battery compatibility issue

HelloThe batteries for T410/420 are not compatible with T430, even Lenovo genuine ones. Because of T430 features hardware authentification of the battery installed. The batteries for old laptops like T410/420 don't have such features (authentification chips inside). This chip missing causes the battery being installed in the T430 can't be charged. So, you have to purchase Lenovo original battery for T430.

UPD
Lenovo original batteries for T430 are backward compatible with T420

Hello, I have an issue switching on my laptop since two days ago and I am not sure if the problem is with my laptop's external battery, the motherboard or the power charger. My laptop model is on the list of laptops affected by lenovos battery recall so maybe the issue is with the battery. But then theres also this:- With the external battery in the laptop and the charger plugged in, the laptop powers up and displays "Error 0190 : Critical low battery error" and then switches off.  I looked this error up in my laptops manual and it says that I should replace the system board-The laptop also doesn't run with the charger plugged in and the battery removed, so does this mean the charger is broken as well?

My family, myself are long time Lenovo Thinkpad T users.  I currently have a T 520.  It's fine as it always has been and quite pleased,  but I would now like something much lighter and it has developed a little glitch that doesn't seem reparable.  I will still keep it as a second, back-up laptop.  I just ordered the T460s that is to my liking and right in my price range (got the basic one new from Lenovo for under $800).   But to my dismay and amazement, I keep reading and hearing about lousy battery charge times ranging from 4 to 7 hrs when it is suppose to be at least 10 hrs.  And about all kinds of efforts and ways to increase it with apparently little success.   I have searched several times in this Thinkpad T forum (and elsewhere) on the latest, up to date info and experience regarding the battery and maximizing, extending battery life for the T460s.  I have not found anything beyond around 10/16/16.    As of 2/12/17, I am wondering what battery is now going into T460s, like the one being built for me.   Is it the same as always or something diferent, new, improved? Are T460s users still having the same problems and issues with the length of the battery charge? Has anyone found something, anything that really does maximize, improve or extend T460s battery life? Thanks, Randy

I have a T460s with 2 batteries per the attached status.  Battery 2 is discharged first, then battery 1. Issue: When battery 2 depletes, instead of switching over to battery 1, the laptop powers off without warning.  Just... POOF.  I have updated BIOS and am running Windows 10 Pro. BIOS is at N1CET58W 1.26 I have Lenovo Vantage loaded, but when I run it to check for updates, none of the 'System Update' buttons results in any action being taken.   I have done some searching but have not found any information on why the switchover from Battery 2 to Battery 1 would cause an instant power off.

Hi,I recently purchased Thinkpad X1 yoga (1 Gen) machine with 16Gb Ram, 512GB SSD & WQHD IPS (Not even OLED) display with windows 10 pro 64 bit OS.My laptop battery is draining fast and only last for 4 to 5 hours with normal browsing & usage with 60-75% brightness (even reducing it to 50% doesn't give much improvement) and in Power save mode. As per Lenovo it should last for 9 to 11 hours but in reality it is no where near to it. I had also looked at similar issues that has been raised in this forum by other users as well. But I strongly feel that a top brand like Lenovo/Thinkpad doesn't cheat customers by giving false promises for the battery life of  9 to 11 hours without their internal testing, also I feel they would have not be claiming this (9 to 11 hrs) battery life by keeping their screen brightness to dark i.e. less than 50% or 25%. So i thought i could dig deeper to find out the problem. After my initial analysis using powercfg.exe command tool for sleepstudy, the report (i.e. https://ibb.co/hzob7F) shows me some a Ghost application called "Unknown [None]" which comsumes more power and I guess this is the culprit that cases the battery to drain faster. Looks like this Ghost appid takes around 60% of the power compared with all the other appid.  But not sure how to identify this Ghost appid. I have also posted my query in Microsoft forum but yet to get an reply.https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-othe... I have a ThinkPad T460P. Some time ago it fell off to the side of couch while plugged in and bent the adapter / end of charger insert upon impact. After i would receive a "plugged in but not charging" message. I could still get this machine to charge if i closed it and inserted the charger, let it sit, and then open. Somewhat inconsistent but it worked. Finally the other day i was running a video and the battery drained completely without realizing it was not charging. I received a critically low battery message. Charger no longer worked and machine would not turn on. I bought a new 90W charger to see if it would do the trick. When i plug this in, the light above the thinkpad sign and also the light in power button flashes 3 times but then nothing else. Normally this light would strobe. The charger appears to work as the light near the port has gone from yellow to green. But the machine no longer turns on. Sometimes i can get it to flash when pressing the power but nothing. Also tried a number of tricks like taking the battery out, holding the power button for a while, putting all back in and trying again. Machine will also not turn on when plugged in without the battery in. Thoughts? Am i cooked here?

I have a Thinkpad T460s since a couple of months. It's the i7 edition with 20GB/1TB edition. The device has been working fine so far, although the CPU fan had to be replaced shortly after I got it (rattling noise). Since a couple of days, the Thinkpad is spinning up the fan very often. Just a simple interaction such as opening Chrome triggers the fan to blow quite loud for some time (20-30s at least). When compiling using Visual Studio, the fan almost spins to the loudest it possibly can. The thing is: it didn't do that all of the time I've had it.  Even when it's completely idle (say 0-2%), the fan still humms a little bit (it didn't do that before either). Could this indicate a hardware issue? I have NBD support but should know whether this could indicate some failure. Thanks for any advice.

Hiseems T460s (20F9) is wors than my previous laptop T420s, I can't move it so freely as before. At certain point the mouse cursor just stops moving and have to use force with a finger to make it move anywhere. I noticed the cap hole is now much smaller than f.ex. T420s, perhaps this is the reason for it. I found a link on the net to make the movement possible better;http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/thinkpad-t460s-trackpoint-mod.790347/In addition, previously there came several Caps with the laptop, now there is not a single extra one. So I don't dare to try the fix above link before I have at least one extra cap in case something goes wrong. So the question is what is the product code for the Thinkpad T460s Trackpoint Cap collection? I tried to look in the net, hard to find.  I used Lenovoguickpick and the possible code might be this;ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set (Part # 4XH0L55146)Then again googling that with amazon produces no results so can't get those anywhere. Any help appreciated, Thank You.

Hi, Since this morning, my 3 week old ThinkPad T460s started making some weird fan noise. When spinning up and also while slowing down (so not on higher speeds), there's a rattling noise coming from the laptop. Sounds a bit as if the fan is brushing against something or perhaps some trembling/interference?Also at really slow fan activity, this is audible quite heavily. Up until now, that noise wasn't audible at all. Should I be calling in support (I have on-site support for this machine)? I don't assume this is normal for a new machine to happen? Thanks!

I have searched all forums including this one and have been unable to find a resolution to my issue.I have had my laptop (Thinkpad T460s) for just over a year now and use it for work daily. I was using it with no issue at lunch, but when I opened the lid around 3 hours later - the screen was black and the laptop seemed to be stuck in sleep mode. I tried a hard reset and now I can not even get the Lenovo post menu to show.If I press the power button, the keyboard momentarily turns on the backlighting and the power button stays illuminated, after about a minute the power button turns off. This entire time the laptop screen is completely black, I don't see the Lenovo post menu and therefore have no acces to the BIOS or OS.I have tried using the hardware reset button on the bottom of the laptop, removing the 2 discreet batteries, removing the CMOS battery, removing all batteries and resetting the RAM. None of this has gotten me any headway on resolving this issue. I am going to try contacting technical support but am hoping someone may help me find a quick and simple resolution to this issue.

Hi all,  I recently purchased a T460s with some upgrades on the specifications (RAM 16 GB, GPU GeForce 930M and etc.). The initial operating system was set to Windows 7, so I upgraded to Windows 10 64 bit. I manually downloaded all the drivers required for this laptop and windows 10. While everything else runs pretty well, the keyboard backlight does not seem to work. I haven't checked if the backlight works on the previous operating system, so I am unsure if the problem is actually from the hardwares or if the OS was updated wrong. I am pretty sure that this model supports the keyboard backlit function since the space bar has that little image on the left side that (I'm guessing) indicates the function of backlit keyboards.  I'm wondering if there are actual drivers that I must intall prior to pressing the (Fn+Spacebar) keys to turn on the backlight, or if there is a problem with my computer. If it's the case of the latter, I am thinking about resetting my laptop (reinstalling windows 10). Being aware of how long it takes to download and install all the necessary components, once I do, is there any method of backing up the computer and after the reset just using that backup to go back to the original state where I have all my programs and data?  Thanks.

Hello, community My name is Taveres Harris and I am new to the Lenovo support community. Please help me make my first experience successful. I have been tasked with deploying new Win10 PCs by the EOY. My company purchased Lenovo ThinkPad T460s(s) and Lenovo ThinkCentre M900(s). I didn't have any trouble creating the image and uploading it to the WDS server, which is Server 2012 R2. However, I am having no luck deploying the image to the PCs. Here's what is known: *Each PCs MAC address has been added to the 'Allowed' filter on my DHCP server*Each PC has the same ethernet LAN drivers (Intel 1219-V 64-bit Windows 10)*WDS is configured correctly (I have no trouble deploying images to my Windows 7 machines)*Boot.wim for my Windows 10 machines is correctly added to the WDS server Here's the issue: When I boot a PC, press F12 to initate a PXE boot, and choose the NIC adapter to boot, I have no trouble. From there, I get to my boot options listed in the WDS server and choose the Windows 10 boot image. From there, WDS goes to the setup window, and eventually, I get a message stating the following: WdsClient: An error occured while obtaining an IP address from the DHCP server. Please check to ensure that there is an operational DHCP server on this network segment. I have researched the possible reasons for that error, and have narrowed it down to the LAN driver not being provisioned for Windows Server 2012 R2. For my Windows 7 machines, I ca... Read more

Good day Everyone, I was just provided with a 'new' laptop at work to replace my old one and when wanted to check the specs on the Lenovo webiste, I noticed that the following message popped up:Sorry, this product is no longer available This pop-up message really called my attention because even if I know that certain products may have shorter support or sale life span, I think this one is not too old not to be available anymore.I am now a little concerned that this machine may not be that good a product and will be able to perform as expected in the years to come. I don't have the luxury to exchange my designated system too often so I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing. The upgrade is made now because I am having problems with my current T430s, but those are mainly software issues, I just want to kill two birds with one stone by getting a new image with an upgraded machine.I read some of the comments written and most of them are good. So, even though I am the one who would decide whether to upgrade or keep working with the current machine, I am still puzzled by the fact that the new one is no longer available for purchase. So, does any one know why this model is now discontinued?Thank you!Moris

Just got my new lenovo Thinkpad T460s, so far everything is going perfect. I just ran into an issue. When connecting an external screen via a standard HDMI cable to my Thinkpad T460s, the notebook does not detect the second screen. All the information on the lenovo website sugests that it should atomatically detect external screen via HDMI connection. Is there something I am missing? * Restarting does not work* Updating the display driver does not work* Cable does work on other notebooks Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen in another forum post that the battery is replaceable... Is there any manual that explains how to replace it  and which battery models are allowed? Thank you very much.

A:Battery dying in my T460s

Hi, You can see any information regarding your batteries by doing the following: type:  "CMD" in "type here to search" bar in windows 10Then right click on it and run as administratorThen copy and paste the following line:powercfg /batteryreport /output c:\Energy_Report.html  This will generate a Battery report in your c:\  folder, something like this:  You will get the model, and serial number of your batteries and also the design capacity and the full charge capacity, this way you will be able to see how much life is remining in your battery. And regarding the way to replace the battery, all you need is to remove some screws to have access to your battery. you can find some good tutorials in youtube. Any comment or doubt please let me know Regards!

I'm looking at buying a T460s or T460p. I looked at the T460s hardware manual, and it seems like the batteries are not user-replaceable. Is this correct? If the battery life is not long enough for my requirements, I would want to carry around spare batteries. If the battery is not replaceble on the road, how about when the battery reaches end of life (after 2-3 years). Is it possible to replace simply by ordering a new one from the website? Also, can anyone from Lenovo tell me why the T460p and T460 are not available on the Japanese Lenovo website? Since Lenovo USA does not ship outside of USA and I am located in Japan, it seems that I am stuck with ordering from whatever selection is available in Japan, and they do not have either the T460 to T460p on their website.

Hi, Laptop: lenovo ThinkPad T460sOS : Windows 10 64-bit(Upgraded from windows 7) fully updatedDrivers/BIOS/Firmware : Fully updated with Lenovo VantageWarranty/Support : Yes The Laptop screen goes off randomly. The Laptop is definitely on and only the display is off. I need to do a hard power off (keep pressing the power button) to to swithc off and on to get the display again. after each power off, windows eventlog ( System) will show ->The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Checked the system for any issues with Lenovo tools and all OK. Anybody facing this issue ? Any help is appreciated. The Latptop is with business support/warranty but I dont know what is cusing this issue or how to reproduce it if I log a case Catherine

I´m sorry! I don´t know why but language was automatically changed to English! T460s on ThinkPad Pro Dock, external monitor (4k) connected via display port to dock.Sometimes the external monitor got black and reports "no signal". This happens sporadically, I am not able to reconstruct this. I´ve red, that an old firmware of the Pro Dock can cause this error, but the Verison 2.33.000 seems to be the newest. I also checked the AC-supply (I´ve red, that a wrong supply can cause this "blackout", this is the 90W / 20V supply which should be okay).Win10 Pro, i7-6600U, 4k monitor via DisplayPort (connected to ProDock), AC-supply: 90W, 20V (Rev: D, Rev: 400)Any suggestions?Thank yo... Hello, I've been having this problem for a while and can't seem to find any solution for it.I'm running a Thinkpad T460s in dual boot, with Windows 10 and Ubuntu. The problem is that the windows instalation doesn't have Digital Audio Output listed in the sound output devices and as such I can't hear any sound from my TV when I've got hdmi plugged in. I've tried everything, reinstalling drivers, updating with other drivers from intel, even resetting windows but noting seems to work. I'm not sure what details I can provide here in order to help solve this issue so I'll edit as requests come in. UPDATE: It might be a windows issue, since one of my friends has a T460 that had no problems untill he opened it one day and the digital audio outputs suddenly disappeared. Also HDMI audio works for both of us on Linux. Any advice would be really appreciated.
