I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-3190ee and since i bought my laptop i had the original windows 7 Home Premium x64 installed and the sticker is on the back of my laptop.

Yesterday I had to format my laptop because I have been infected by a virus.

As I don't have a Windows 7 DVD so I downloaded a copy of windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

When i was installing the windows asked me for my product key, I entered they key I have on the back of my laptop.

After installation is done, I "right click" on my computer>>properties and I see in the bottom of the window saying that i have a trial time until I activate my windows !!!

Why my key didn't work and do I have now to buy a new Windows 7 license ?? or is there anything i can do to have back the original key i had on my laptop!!

Thank you

A:Why my original key isn't wokring when I formated my laptop !!!!

Hello Anthos, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, use the tutorial below to re-enter the product key number. Be sure to double check that you have entered each character from the product key correctly.

It's not hard to mistake an 6 for a G or O for a 0 for example.

Hope this helps,

It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally going to buy a laptop. Running/learning Photoshop is one of the primary reasons for the purchase, so I'm looking for minimum specs that my laptop should have.

I'm not talking the minimum specs that Adobe requires, I'm talking about minimum specs to get reasonably good performance from Photoshop.

Thanks all.

A:What are some minimum laptop specs for running Photoshop?

Laptops are quite cheap these days - to get a machine with 1GB of memory is quite common - staples in UK had a deal just before xmas for a machine for £399

I use photoshop on 512M of memory editing 27MB files OK
my laptop is a HP dv5094ea
1GB of memory
seperate 128M graphics card - few have seperate cards - most are intergrated
AMD Turion64 and it works great with PS

however, I do prefer a big monitor when doing detailed work - so you may find this the limitation

hope that helps

Hi everybody!

I've been trying to figure out a problem on my girlfriends laptop for some time now but I haven't found the reason for why it acts as it does. Therefore, I'm now hoping for a little assistance from the champs of this site :-)

Problem: For no apparent reason the HD of the laptop, an Acer Aspire 5052 running Vista Home Basic (1GB, 120GBHD), starts working excessively, making the the computer slower and slower for in the end to ... well... crash and restart. :-|

I've been trying several angles to find/solve the problem:
* Turning off applications that are not needed via msconfig
* Using SpyBot SD to check and fix the system.
* Made full scans with AVG free antivirus.
Furthermore, I've turned off and uninstalled toolbars and such other stuff she might have gotten by downloading software (Yahoo toolbar etc.) Basically, I've tried as much as I can to bring the computer to a "zen" state with nothing else but necessary things on it ;-)

Nevertheless, without any warning, the HD sometimes just starts crunching and renders the laptop unusable. I've tried to wait it out, to see if whatever task its performaning might come to an end, but after 45 mins of waiting we went out to take a coffee. When we came back, the computer had restarted! In other words, when left to run to the end it seems to swamp itself until it commits harakiri! Normally we get impatient before that and just turn off the laptop the hard way :-)

When it started crunching earlier... Read more

Usually I would just stick to my desktop but since moving away from home 3 months ago I have found that my old laptop is much more convenient for doing college work etc.

The Laptop was running fine when I began using it back in July but over the past couple of weeks I've been experiencing lots of problems.

Basically, when I run any piece of software on the laptop, it immediately begins to slow down and my CPU usage creeps up. It has become impossible to watch videos (both on and offline) on my laptop as within 30 seconds my CPU hits 100% and the playback and audio become extremely jittery and laggy.

The problem seems to get worse the longer the laptop is running, for example when I'm working on assignments in Microsoft word it seems ok at first but within 10 minutes I start getting input lag and missed characters when I type.

At this point the laptop ... Read more

ok, so at my college i go to, most computers used are macs. a lot of the times i will need to access my teacher's "dropbox" (a folder where u turn your homework files into), by going to Window(i think)>Go. remember, this is on a mac. Whenever I click "Go" , a screen pops up asking for the server name, so I type in "aiafs00". It then asks for a username and password, so I type that in. finally a window pops up asking which part of the server I want to access, so I click dropboxes, and the Dropboxes icon pops up on the desktop. My question is, how do I do this on my Vista laptop when I am at school. Im pretty sure I can't do it from home because I think I have to be connected to the schools internet/network to access this server. Anyone know how to do it on vista? thanks.

I know there is no virus, and it does not list an error message, it just turns black and shuts down. Can someone please tell me waht to do, I am computer illiterate and desperately need the computer for college, any help would be wonderful, thankyou!!!!!

Hello. There is not much we can do to help you here on the Laptop Audio discussion board. I suggest that you go to Dell_Robert P's profile page and send him a message. (Click on the link which should take you to his page. Then send him a message if you see "send a private message" link on the right side of the page. If not, then click the Add as Friend link and include your message.)
Robert P is the chief forum moderator, and will probably try to help you, although there may be a limit on what a moderator can do. You should include more concrete details about what happened than you put in your post here. It explains what happened but is a bit sketchy. Also include your laptop's service tag number, so he can look it up.

My computer in school (desktop) has a Windows Experience Index of 3.3 but it seems to perform better than my 4.4 WEI laptop. Maybe WEI is not a reliable measure of how fast the computer is but just to give you an idea. I don't know the exact specs of my school pc but i think it has almost the same specs as my laptop in terms of ram and clock speed. Here are my laptop specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Acer
System Model: TravelMate P243
BIOS: InsydeH2O Version 03.72.02V1.05
Processor: Intel® Pentium® CPU B970 @ 2.30GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 1878MB RAM
Page File: 3348MB used, 1230MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)

Anyway, my laptop freezes a lot of times, especially when I haven't turned it off for a long time. This just doesn't happen with my school pc even if it's on 24/7. I was the one who installed windows 7 on both computers so they have almost the same programs installed (except maybe Connectify app in my laptop).

Now i'm wondering if I can still make my laptop perform faster or should I just buy a new one? My CPU usage meter indicates 87% of my ram is used. this is usually the case when i'm working. Do you think this will get faster if I upgrade the ram? i ... Read more

A:My 3.3 WEI computer in school is better than my 4.4 WEI laptop. why?

Do you think this will get faster if I upgrade the ram?Hello and Welcome -Most updated Windows7 computers will run about 4G RAM, rather than your current installed 2G RAM, so it would not hurt to upgrade this -If These TravelMate P243 Specs are the same / similar to yours, it includes Memory "Base RAM size 4 GB" -Part of Acer's business lineup, the TravelMate P243 features an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, 8GB of RAM, an HD webcam, and a 14-inch 1366 x 768 display. Availability date: Aug. 14, 2012 Also This Review says "Basic RAM is 4G" - So I would look at 4Gig as a standard setup.my laptop freezes a lot of times, especially when I haven't turned it off for a long time. << I would turn the computer off at least at the end of the day and save your work Personally only, I turn my laptop off every day (night) as it may be 2 or 3 days between using it, and I like to start fresh each time - Your choice there -Desktops and laptops are a bit different with shutdown times etc, but I still believe in turning them off when totally finished, and it only takes about 1 or 2 minutes to restart them for each session - Try this for a while, and clean out unwanted programs on a regular basis also -Regards -

I'm thinking of getting a Laptop for school, but since Ive only ever brought/built desktops before, I'm not really sure what laptop would be best, only what I want from it and can afford...

-I can spend around £500.
-Needs to be powerful enough to run Visual Studio 2008 without any problems (VS08 is probs the most demanding app I'll use at school)
-At least Dx9 with pixel shader 3. Dx10 would be nice if possible
-If possible without spending too much I wouldn't mind being able to play games at decent settings (eg HL2:Episode 2) without lag

Ive had a look around but couldn't realy find anything useful to tell me if a laptop is capable of what I want or not...this looks like it may be more than capable, but I'm not really sure if thats the case, nor if it's actauly a good deal for £499...

Hi ya angelpalm

I apologize for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, I will be glad to help.

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

I notice that you have more than one anti-virus programs on your machine (Avira & Symantec ). That's not a good idea!!

This messes up the machine pretty badly. Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them.

ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall## Do NOT proceed with the rest of the fix until you have resolved the dual antivirus programs ##

I can access all shared files from my main PC via the wireless network....which is just what I want. Have set Sharing on everything needing to be shared....BUT - my brother MFC 240c printer will not print from my laptop. I have tried everything I can think of, have downloaded drivers onto the laptop (vista ones) etc....I can plug the usb from the printer direct into the laptop and print from both the laptop and the main PC via wireless network...but it just won't work the other way round. I have tried installing the vista printer drivers onto my PC - but for whatever reason it won't allow me to....can you please help me.

Thanks in anticipation

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Hello all I am writing as I am having a problem with my HP Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premiun, Everytime I leave it alone (either on or off) it has the hardest damn time rebooting like it'll get to the HP initial screen and then restart and it takes about 10-12 times to get it back up but then I end up having to re-install everything as when I purchased the laptop I had recovery disks made. But I am not sure what to do and this is something that has just recently began to happen. I dont have hijackthis log or anything just yet as I am currently recovering everything from the discs. But I will post those as soon as I have them. But any initial ideas on what it may be. Having real issues and school statrts soon....

Thanks in Advance

A:Windows vista not booting and school starts soon!

Is it under warranty? If so contact HP about the issue, it sounds like a hardware problem.

Some HP laptops have built in hardware diagnostics, read the user manual on how to use it.

Haven't posted in a while. Well college is coming around and i NEED a laptop, I'll use it for notes, papers, projects, and homework, but that's not what I'm worried about

I'm very OCD about what I buy. I have around 1200-1500 to spend, and i want the best bang for my buck. I want a gaming laptop, that's at least somewhat solid, what am I looking at with that price range?

A:buying laptop for school/gaming help?

You're going to need more money for a good gaming laptop.

Ok I did a little searching and I found a list of mobile video devices.

Nvidia GeForce Go7600
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700
Nvidia GeForce 8400M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7700
Nvidia GeForce Go7600GT
Nvidia GeForce 8600M-GS
Nvidia GeForce 8600M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7800
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800
Nvidia GeForce 8700M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GS
ATI Mobility Radeon X1900
Nvidia GeForce Go7800GTX
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800XT
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GTX
Nvidia GeForce Go7950GTX

Look for a laptop that you can afford with at least one of the above, 2GB of memory for Windows Vista and the mobility processor of your choice. The farther you go down the list the faster and more expensive the video will be. All the recognized brand names I saw where $2000.00 and up.

I'm going to buy a laptop for school use in college, but I'm not sure how to choose the right laptop, I know that the minimum amount of RAM should be at least 2GB and I also heard that i3, i5, i7's are good to use too. My friend also told me that Lenovo is a very good and trusted brand for laptops but what else should I look for? What other brands/manufactures for laptop are trustworthy? main question is what to look for so that it isn't going to be 'OUT' in a few years. Thanks a lot!

I am trying to install Windows 7 on my laptop because it was nearly crashed so I decided to reinstall it. When I press "Install now" and finish editing my HDD settings so Windows is going to install it finish the "Copying Windows files" step and it just stucks at 0% at "Expanding Windows files"

I have tried with Windows XP aswell and it does not work. I have taken out the HDD and deleted everything on it from my other computer but it seems to still not work so I guess it is the BIOS settings.

I have full access to the BIOS but I have no idea what to do...

Any ideas?

How do I go about getting it to work? He said there is a network card so it should be able to work, but he's not sure how to do it.

Is it even possible with the Home edition or do I need the Professional edition?
If it's possible what do we do?

So lets say I know that security is a joke in a way. I have a basic firewall. I have a router (with built in firewall) I have anti virus.

But... it slows my computer down so .... if I want to keep my computer safe when downloading files, browsing websites, this is a laptop so it will be going places at some point.

What do you rec. website or downloads for basic security? Is

Microsoft security essentials, windows firewall, and malware enough? In cunjunction with a router at home with a firewall?

I read about sand boxing and I do have avast (but I disabled it for speed issues) so what about running commando and so forth. I mean... it seems silly to install a ton of programs if it makes it so I can't even use the internet. Also is crome a safe browser or should I be using Firefox?

My fear is simply a virus that messes up my computer, someone getting into my email account and sending virus's out.. that kind stuff...

:P hehe just curious if there is a good website to read up on this stuff for.

If what I got will keep me safe from bios passwords and highjacking software im cool. I don't got anything worth stealing I don't order online or anything... so any info be great. (computer will be used for school soon though) don't want people messing with it for sure.... but at the same time important It doesn't get bogged down

A:so what if im parnoid? Keep my laptop safe at school

Heres my answer..

If you are not really sure if the a website is infected or not go here http://www.virustotal.com/ Using this website, you can check and verify if the website that you are trying to visit has a malware, rootkit, trojans, adware and spywares.

For some reason you need to delete your prefetch and temp files so that it will not cosume your computers memory (Performance problems.)

Click start, type on the start search or run "%temp%" without the quotation mark
Select all then hit delete. Noticed that some you can't delete all of them. Its fine. Just press skip.

Click start, type on the start search run. then on run type "prefetch" without the quotation mark
Select all then hit delete.

Hey guys.

I want to get a laptop to use for school projects (like slideshows and videos), gaming (H2V, CS:S) and surfing the web (do people still say that?) and I'd like to hear from someone who knows more about it than me about how mush it would cost.

Here's an extensive list of what I'd like it to have:
- Windows Vista Home Premium (there's $300 already)
- At least a 3Ghz CPU
- Mid- to high-end graphics card (GeForce 8600 maybe)
- A good sound card (nothing fancy)
- At least a 120-160GB hard drive, reasonably fast (say 7200 RPM, is that fast?)
- At least 4GB of RAM
- A relatively small screen size (18-21") so I don't have to be carrying around a huge bag
- Decent networking capabilities (good enough to download stuff, play games online and use my school's wireless)

I hope I didn't miss anything. I don't know much about laptops so any advice or insight is helpful.

On Apple's website there's a thing where you can play with upgrades and a few other settings to customize your computer, and it tells you how much it would cost. But Macs are lousy for gaming so I tried to find a thing like that for PC laptops but had no luck.

A:How much can I expect to pay for a laptop for school and games?

Dude, how much are you planning on spending? Those are some pretty heavy specs for a lappy. I really don't think you need quite that specs for basic gaming (though definitely get someone else's opinion, I only know from what I've looked at and such). but try Dell, they've got some pretty good deals. however, if you really do want even higher specs, you might wanna try something like Alienware.
Again, I'm no expert, but for a lappy those are some pretty high end specs.

Oh yeah, lol. BTW, if I understood you right...you're talking 4-5 grand.

Hi, so I'm in the process of purchasing a laptop for University and was hoping someone could help me out with a couple questions I have.

1) How does the AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 (1.8GHz/1MB), perform against the Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3500+? Would both perform well for a school laptop?

2) How much better is the ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory? than the ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory? Would both be good enough for basic office and internet use?

3) Is the AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 (1.8GHz/1MB) with the ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory? worth about 150$ more than the Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3500+ and ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory? Should I not bother with the upgrade for 150$?

Thanks in advance for helping me out. Most of this stuff goes right over my head!

2. Any laptop is capable of graphics for basic office and internet use. Even cheap ones.

3. yes. Ensure you maximize the RAM on any laptop you buy. It would also be wise to buy a faster rpm hard drive.

4. Please post in the correct forum next time. (mobile computing)

A:Kid needs a computer for school... should I go with a laptop or desktop?

Given a choice, I vote desktop

1) You usually need pay more for laptops
2) Laptops will also need to endure more wear and tear as they're mobile and will be probably be dropped or slip out of hand some time and ya need worry more about damages
3) And importantly, i think it's easier to keep an eye on what kid's are doing on a computer when it's a desktop!

Hi. I have Sony Vaio Laptop running Vista Home Premium SP2.
I recently had a nasty virus, a rootkit trojan, which I believe I fully removed with the help of your great forum(s). However. During the time the virus was present, I started to get this problem: When trying to wake my laptop from Sleep mode, it would restart and take me to the 'windows did not shut down properly' screen. I could 'Start Windows normally' and it would go back to full functionality, running perfectly smoothly.
Today, I had the same issue of it restarting from Sleep mode.
I ran sfc /scannow and it revealed that 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them' (When I try to open the CBS.log I got the message: Access is denied).

I set my laptop to run chkdsk on the next startup. Restarted, and now it wont boot, even in safe mode. I just get a black screen when trying to boot normally; & when attempting to boot in safe mode, the system hangs at "crcdisk.sys"
I've tried running Startup Repair but receive the message: Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.
In the Startup Repair 'Diagnosis and repair details:' log, under 'Root cause found:' it states:
"Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem."
I tried a System Restore, it did not work. Repair Action: System Restore | Result: Failed. Error code = 0x570

The PC tools firewall is compatible with vista. I had put it on my sisters dell for her and was working good. hi all this is my second post on here only just done my first but that was in XP section, anyway.......

i bought an advent laptop about november last year but the other day while i was on the net it got really slow for some reason and would not do anything i wanted so i managed to restart it after about 20 minutes and it came back on and it was fine so i done the usual virus check, defrag, disk cleanup etc. and everything was fine so i turned it off not thinking any more about it, the next day however when i turned it on it was really slow and wouldn't load Vista so i tried everything and it still would not load so i decided to put the recovery disc in and try that still nothing just the first bios screen after leaving it for about an hour i got a message "check disk drive connection cable not connected C:/ " so i removed the panel on the back and checked where the hard drive plugs in its fine nothing wrong, tried loading again same thing happens and now all i get is a message to say the hard drive is not connected or the is no operating system on system disc.

i dont know what has caused this and the hard drive only had 12GB out of 100GB used.

does anyone know what this is and can it be repaired/ sorted without buying a new hard drive ?

thanks for reading and look forward to hearing and meeting some of you

A:advent laptop running vista seems to have died

hello jay, and welcome to the TSF forums :)

well, theres really only two things that are going to effect weather your computer sees the hard drive or not. One of course is the hard drive, you can be sure by putting another drive in the laptop, if it sees the drive, then you need to replace yours. If it doesn't see another drive, then its time to replace the motherboard.

But to answer your question about causes - hard drives go bad, its a fact of life, and the main reason all IT people stress backing up data. Brand new hard drives can be bad right out of the box, or some can even last for over 10 years, but they will go bad.
