Windows 2000 wont start because file missing or corrupted

Q: Windows 2000 wont start because file missing or corrupted

Hello...thanks for your help...

I have a laptop that wont boot up message says: windows 2000 cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupted <windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. It asks to reinstall a copy of this file.

I can't do anything because screen is black and frozen just message appears. I tried putting windows 2000 cd in but nothing happens.

Thanks again for helping.

Added: problem may be due to a freeware program i used (EasyCleaner) to try and clean registry. It deletes duplicate files or files that point nowhere etc. and maybe that deleted something i needed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an old desktop with XP home on it. It refuses to start with the message: system 32\drivers\ntfs.sys. It is missing or corrupt and I need to insert the original disc, which I do not have. Is there a way to download the file to my other computer and load it onto the one that will not start? I have tried everything I can think of to fool it into starting. No dice. Thanks.

A:XP file corrupted or missing. Wont start up.

You will need an XP CD to fix your computer.
You can try downloading the XP Recovery Console ISO image. Burn the image to CD using IMGBurn in my signature and then boot off of the newly created CD. In the Recovery Console you can type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes and restart the computer. This will check you HDD. If it fails, the HDD needs to be replaced.

Whenever I try to start my computer, the bios loads as normal, but then I get a black screen with the message: Windows can not start because C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\system is missing or corrupted.
It tells me that I can try to repair the problem by loading the repair console on the Windows XP install disk, but whenever I try this, I get a black screen with a DOS console, and I don't know enough DOS to fix the problem. Help please!

P.S. If it is avoidable, I'd rather NOT have to reformat or wipe my hard drive.

There are a number of functions available in the Repair Console. The one most likely to help would be "chkdsk /r", but you can review this and other possibilities by simply typing "help" after logging in.

Boot in to Safe Mode and select Last Know Good Configuration

Turn your computer off through Shut Down.
Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
Once your computer's manufacturer logo (eg.'ACER') starts to show, start pressing the F8 key repeatedly.
Keep pressing it until the Windows Advanced Options Menu loads up.
Make sure 'Last Known Good Configuration' is selected, navigate to it by using the arrow keys.
Press enter, and your computer will start booting with the LKGC that worked.

Can you access the Advanced Boot Options by tapping F8 at boot? If you can, select System Restore and do a Restore just before the problem began. If you cannot access the menu via F8 do you have access to another Windows 7 computer so that you can create a System Repair Disk?

Edit: If you can access Advanced Boot Options then try Last Known Good Configuration before attempting a System Restore.

After only just having one problem solved on here I have encountered another and I think it is fairly problematic but am far from understanding it - please help!!!

I downloaded the new version of Internet Explorer (version 8) as this was an option when I signed onto the web this afternoon (I previously had IE 7 and am running Windows XP version 2).

But after downloading this I had trouble getting onto the net (though I seemed to be able to initially). So I restarted the PC. But, it did not restart.

Instead I get the following message on a plain black screen when I try to run my computer:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

What is this file? I have an Acer Aspire notebook which came installed with Windows XP Version 2 (I have no CD drive currently).

I have looked on the microsoft website (I am currently on a different PC) but dont understand anything that is posted on their about this problem.

Do I need to re-install a new operating system? Will this mean I will loose all my data that is on my computer? This is very precious to me as I am travelling and I have saved on my computer photos and diary entries - I would be very upset to loose them.

What is my best course of action? Should I take it to a specialist. Again I really hope I can prevent the information that I did have saved on there from being deleted.

Thankyou to anyone who can assist.

My old XP "Home Edition" computer can't boot up.

I get this error
"c:\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt."

And it never came with a bootable XP CD.

But I discovered later on that I can use something called
"Puppy Linux CD" to access my old files.

The good news is that I can access my hardrive using
"Puppy Linux CD" without any problems.

I think it was a virus/trojan of somesort that caused my windows from starting.

But I created this topic so that someone could actually help
me to MANUALLY recover certain files, like certain stored files in some directory, in order to restore windows.
Because, like I said, I don't have a cd. And I really miss my XP!

I also have plenty of blank CDs to burn and a 900GB USB hardrive that I could use.
Appreciate it!!!

A:XP won't Start up due to "missing or corrupted file" error and I don't Have a CD, either!

If the corrupted files were from a rootkit i highly recommend that you just copy your desired files over to another pen / burning a CD from the live distribution and re-install Windows from scratch.

A Windows XP cd you could borrow from a friend-friend or something similiar just hear around since you can't even start and we dont know what's in the system right now.

Every sys file you replace will be corrupted again if there is more files that are infected so most likely this is the end of your current partition

So my friend bought a non brand tablet from china with win vista on it. He turned it on and gave the error that a file is missing therefore it would not load the o.s.

I then though mayb I can pull out the hhd and plug it into my desktop and install winXp.

Well it ran well and it installed on the hhd and ran smooth. I shut off the comp and pulld out the hhd and placed it back in the tablet.

I turned on the tablet and it detected new hardware and askd if I should run it on safe mode, network, comand prompt, last good config or start off normally.

Well I try all amd nothing....

It would start but but then the xp icon would show with the loading bar and restart.

And back to the new hdwr detected screen....

What can I do??

There is no System32 file...there is a system32 folder which is full of different files.

My friend hasn't used his pc in a week, as he had brought it up to his dorm and was awaiting the arrival of his new lcd monitor. In addition to the monitor i helped him select new ram and a new video card. We went with the 2 gb of Corsair ddr2 pc5400 675 mhz and a BFG 7900 gt. We installed the ram before his monitor and gpu arrived. We plugged in the monitor to test out the pc with the new ram. This message popped up when we botted up, "RAM size has changed". We could choose to either "continue" or "go to setup". I wasn't there at the time, and my friend clicked continue.

Ever since then, with either the new or the old ram, when we try to boot, it says, "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWS-SYSTEM32-CONFIG-SYSTEM".

It then says "you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original CD-ROM"

and then "selet 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

Why is it doing this? Can anyone tell me how to fix this? We do not have the windows cd with us, so that won't do any good.

The pc is a Dell Dimension 8400. We are using windows pro with sp2.

For future reference: RAM and video adapter issues have to head the list as the most common problems on windows based personal computers. If you are upgrading a system, do only one upgrade at a time, not several. Install the RAM and test it thorough; something like this utility, for example: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

When all is happy with the first upgrade, do the second. Use it, test it. If happy, do the third, ...etc.

Hi
I need some help with my laptop! When I start to restart my laptop the following message comes up - windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupted and I can not do anything.
The system can be restored by using the Startup CD and pressing R for recover, but I do not have any cd. The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.
I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
Could you please boot your computer from Windows 8 setup media, start command prompt from there by pressing SHIFT+F10 after WinPE Setup wizard starts and try accessing your boot partition (this is where your efi boot file is located).
If am not mistaken, it's too late in Russia and my mind doesn't serve me well at this time, this error indicates that your boot code on your system partition is OK and BIOS successfully runs it, but after that, when it tries to access EFI file from your
boot partition to start Windows, it fails to do so because it cannot access the volume that is pointed by boot code (the volume where EFI file is located). For example, it may happen if your boot code is located on a NTFS system partition and your data partition
is formatted into ReFS file system. In this case, your system will be able to access the boot code, but the boot firmware will fail to access winload EFI file located on a non-supported file system.
In short, it looks like you have specified in BIOS to use 16-bit old BIOS (non-UEFI) firmware, but Windows Loader points to EFI file due to a record in the Boot Configuration Database (BCD) that points to winload.efi EFI firmware.
Could it be that you were installing Windows 8 on a UEFI-enabled PC and then changed BIOS setting and disabled UEFI in BIOS?
Could you please certify that you have enabled UEFI in your BIOS and you are starting Windows using old int13 (13 hex interrupt) access method? Do you see Windows Loade... Read more

Hello everyone!

Last week I got a nasty trojan on my laptop. I suspect that I got it while i was on a business trip to China, but that the trojan was dialed last week, so I was rather unprepared.

Anyway, the trojan wouldn't let me access the Internet so I had to improvise and remove it from the registry manually. I've done this many times before so it wasn't a big deal. I also ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware to get rid of the files that I may had missed.

Everything went pretty smooth after that, but I started getting some annoying pop-ups again and couldn't fint the cause. But since I'm not at home now, I decided to simply avoid surfing the net until I get home in a couple of weeks so that I could run a real virus check. Then I got a couple of bluescreens. I searched and searched and still couldn't find the cause.

This morning my computer wouldn't start at all. Vista tells me that the necessary system file "c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgkqoce.sys"
is corrupt. This file was created yesterday and I suspect that the virus created it. I can still enter the command prompt and it tells me that the file has a filesize of 0 kb.

I'm currently backing up important data on a portable harddrive so I'm prepared for the worst, but I can't help to think that there must be a solution.

Here is some info:

- I'm running Windos Vista SP2. No system backups are available.

But this is a Netbook with no CDROM drive. USB and SDcard drives, that's all. Is it possible to repair this without the CD? Even the onscreen message is the same message everyone gets, "You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original Setup CD-ROM." But no drive to do this.

Do you have or can borrow an external DVD drive? Then go into the BIOS and change the order so that USB is first boot option. Samsung and Lite-on do USB powered DVD RW drives made to use with netbooks, no doubt they could see a market for them with the millions of netbooks being sold ! Then you need an OS disc of the type you are using, and you can try a repair.

I have a Compaq Evo N200, which is an ultracompact notebook and has neither a floppy disk drive nor a CD one. Last week after a Windows update I rebooted my laptop and got this error message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced".

Having no CD drive I couldn't run the Compaq Quick Restore CDs that came with my laptop. I borrowed an external floppy drive from a friend and downloaded Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks from the internet. I attached the external floppy drive to my laptop. Luckily the laptop booted from the external drive and loaded the Setup disks. I got to the Recovery Console and rename system and system.alt files as directed by Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269075), but when I went to the c:\winnt\repair folder, I couldn't find a system file there and there's not a regback subfolder either as I had never run the Emergency Repair Disk Wizard (I'm really angry with myself for this).

There was, however, a system.bak file in the repair folder. I decided to give it a try and copied it to the c:\winnt\system32\config folder and renamed it as system.

Then I rebooted my laptop. This time I didn't see the error message but it started the Windows 2000 Setup process and asked me for the Windows 2000 Product Key! When I bought this laptop there was no Windows 2000 CD coming with it. There are two Compaq Quick Restore CDs, but there is no Product Key on the... Read more

Good Morning
Running win xp home w/sp2

When I turn on comp. get the mssg:
Windows couldn't start following file missing
<Windows root>/system32/hal.dll
Reinstall copy of file

Do NOT have install disks, sys. recovery does not work. Tried to boot from a cd (changed BIOS to cd as 1st boot device) with win xp setup boot disk downloaded from MS site. Get same error mssg. All the threads I searched, the folks had disks or could boot from the cd drive, so that didn't work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It seems as if my problem is pretty common here, but I havent seen much about Windows 2000.
I'm running Windows 2000 Professional, and encounter the problem: "The file hal.dll is missing, please replace it or reinstall it". That shows up when i try to boot it up.

Thank God I sttill have this harddrive with an OS on it. I tried using a certain program, and it crashed, which resulted in a file thats missing or courrupted (as it says on the win2k bootup).
When restarted, it looks like its about to load windows 2000, then it stops and says " The file Hal.dll is missing or corrupted, ,please reinstall to replace it" .
I wanted to go to safe mode, but it wont load because of that corrupted file.

I hooked this HD up as Primary IDE (im using right now) and hooked the HD that im trying to fix, as Secondary IDE. So then I triied to copy that file from this existing win2k that im currently using right now and replace it in the original harddrive but i couldnt cuz i cant even access it. My system dectects that the harddrive exists, but when clicked on it in Windows Explorer, it says "This harddrive is not formatted, would u like to format it now?"

This is very frustrating!! I dont want to reformat it cuz i got files in that harddrive that are important, even if i need to format it, at least i need to copy out my files first.. which i cant even do because it isnt accessable.

I also tried to boot the computer to A:\, which is the flippy disk, hoping... Read more

As of yesterday, my pc just shuts off before it really has a chance to load up> It was working fine 5 days ago- After i turn on pc it showed this once," We appologize for the inconveninece but windows did not start up normally due to a software change, etc".... NO blue screen- just white text in black backround. After attempting several ways to boot up, it stopped showing that error & started doing showing something else;"Windows couldnt start because the following file is corrupt or missing. Please reinstall a copy of the above file, windows root>\system32\hal.dll I tried to go into safe mode, and last known configuration, and it still shows the above missing file alert. I was hoping to use my XP CD to fix things but when I chose to boot from CDROM, nothing happens. I am not very pc saavy so I would need easy terms please. My Dell is about 4 years old and I have been the only owner.thanks in advance

You most likely have a problem with your boot.ini, you will probably find that you cannot run the recovery console or re-install windows (without using another PC).These could be a little confusingFirst try the Microsoft support Here If you have the PCs side by side it would help to do the Guide step by step. This is the easier optionOrKellys-Korner XP Tutorial (The top half probably isn't relivant to your situation.) This requires pulling out the hard drive and using as a slave drive on another pc. Don't attempt this if you don't feel up to it.

My daughter has been working on a major final year high school project for several weeks using Word 2000 XP. She has consistently saved the file to floppy disk so as to swap between home and school PC but neglected to save to the HDD. Upon completing the project she attempted to load the final saved file from the floppy. To her great distress the file loaded in an apparently corrupted form with lines of text interspersed with numerous blocks of blank squares. The file seemed about double the original size, text was in an italic font and seemed to be randomly scattered and/or missing sections. She is naturally distraught at the possibility of having lost most of the data she spent weeks compiling and the deadline for submission looming. Can the file be reconstituted or recovered in the correct format. Why would this happen?. Any help/advice would be greatfully received. As a not so computer savy mum I am helpless to assist her.

Hi All

Ok, last night I was trying to update my creative sound card drivers. I went to the creative website and downloaded the latest drivers for my sb audigy 2 zs. During the install of the drivers, my computer said that there were older drivers installed, and asked if I wanted to delete the old drivers and restart the computer. I clicked "yes", the old drivers were uninstalled, and the computer restarted.

When I entered windows, the driver installation resumed, but a screen also popped up that said something about opening the trouble shooter for my sound card, or something like that, I wasnt really paying attention. When the trouble shooter screen came up, the computer bsod and restarted. I didnt catch the error message.

Now Windows wont load, it says
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\system32\c_1252.nls"
and that I can attempt to repair using the original setup cd-rom.

I did some searching around the internet and found this site

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830088

However, I dont have the original windows cd that came with my computer, as I dont believe they sent me one. I do have a recovery DVD that came with my computer.

I have a product key sticker on the side of my tower, and I am running Windows xp Media Center 2004.

I just tried to boot up using a windows xp mce 2005 cd, but my version is 2004, and the results were the same as before.

I saw some screen shots of the recovery console online, and it should look like
"C: \WINDOWS>"

however my screen shows
"C:\>"

Everytime I type something here, it just says "There is no floppy disk or cd in the drive."

It doesn't ask me which windows installation I would like to log on to, or ask me for my administrative password.

Does anyone know anything about this, or have any advice at all?
I really dont want to mess up my computer any worse than it already is by changing things I dont understand.

Hello,
I've broken my desktop pc and I've tried to sort it but my skills are pretty minimal so it would be great if anyone could give me a bit of advice or point me in the right direction.

Here's a description of what happened:
After using my pc I went to turn it off as normal but I switched off the socket too soon, as the pc hadn't finished shutting down.
When I went to restart it, it seemed to be ok but before it booted up properly i got this message.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Unfortunately I dont have the original setup CD-ROM, but I do have a copy of windows xp home.
I booted the pc from this disk and I pressed 'r' which took me to the recovery console, I'm well and truly stuck here, I dont know how to operate the recovery console.
Does anyone know how I can repair my pc from here or is there anything else I can do?
Many thanks in advance,
Martyn

I cannot take the computer back to the place i bought it as it has gone bust, can I fix this myself?
I also own a laptop, is it possible to connect the 2 pc's? I have alot of documents on the desktop that I'd like to recover.
Cheers,

I downloaded Kapersky internet security 7.0. It was working good for a couple days, and then it identified some file that was named something like win32/winlogon.exe, as behaving suspiciously. So I quarantined it, and then the computer shut down, and when it restarted, it went throught that initial Windows loading page, and then right before I get to the part where I choose which account to log into the computer with, the computer restarts. I have tried to run the computer in safe mode, and done like all the options in that screen, like restoring last known settings or whatever. The only thing I didn't do on that menu was something where you type commands, and I dont know how to do that kind of thing, nor did I even know my password to start the process lol..

Some people have told me to try fixing Windows with the Windows Recovery CD that comes with the computer.. but I lost this a couple years ago when I moved. My computer is a Compaq Presario SR1135CL, I have Windows XP Home, with service pack 2. I contacted HP to try to get a new recovery cd but the person I talked to said he couldn't help because my warranty ran out. But he said if I paid 59 dollars, he could connect me to a technician who could solve the problem in a matter of seconds.. So I don't know if the problem is actually something very easy to fix or if he was just trying to scam me into paying for a service..

sorry so long, thanx for reading

A:windows wont load b/c missing system file

Winlogon.exe is used to facilitate logins/logoffs and is a necessary file. If you could find another XP Home disc you can repair the OS and that should fix it. Other than that you could try copying that file from a working computer and put it in the folder where it is supposed to be although i don't know if that method will work or not. And the HP guy was probably going to tell you to use the CD to fix it in a matter of seconds.

So, I was playing a game called Battlefield 2, and it was a little laggy, it was pissing me off so I restarted my computer. I don't know if this screwed something up, but instead of re-booting up, my computer told me that a file in the system 32 folder or around there (It's called system, I think) was corrupted or missing.
Whoop dee doo. I've had like this happen way too much, and I'm incredibly tired of re-formating. I do NOT want to re-format and re-install it, PLEASE, GOD, NO!

So, it told me to put in my windows CD and push "R" to repair it. So, I did, but that gives me a nice command line, and I don't exactly know what to do.

I tried restarted, and now without any error it just brings me to the blue windows XP screen before the computer goes to your desktop, but it just stays there without actually..going to my desktop and letting everything function. So, what do I do now? Is there any way to replace this file, or am I gonna have to re-format?

A:Computer does not boot up, A file in my windows folder is "Missing/corrupted"

hey there killaer

they only thing thing that comes to mind is (F8 ) and useing the (The Last Good Configuaration ) option

when you use thr repair dose it not tell you wich drive your software is on / profile ??

it should give you the option as in ( 1 c;/win) or something to that affect , maybe you need to slow down and read what the options are

i know this can be very frustrating but sometimes good things come to those that stop and smell the pc chips and stand back, look, read ,and reread

i have learned this lesson many times !!!!!

hope things work out

I cant get windows XP to load at all

Here's the problem......... On boot up I get a black screen and then a error message saying <WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPTED < WINDOWS ROOT>\SYSTEM32\ ntoskrnl.exe> please re-install a copy of the above file.

Windows wont load so I can not use system restore or even go into safe mode.
How can I get around windows and get this file " NTOSKRNL.EXE" into system32 folder without windows being able to load ???

Also I have a HP computer which did not come with a windows XP CD. XP is hidden on a partition on the hard drive.
So that kind of leaves out being able to use the CD to repair windows and using the Repair "R" key during bootup.

So how can I get into windows long enough to be able to repair the NTOSKRNL.EXE file ??
Any and all suggestions would be so much appreciated !!!!
