Scanning Slides: Slow when scanning high resolution

Q: Scanning Slides: Slow when scanning high resolution

When I first bought my CanoScan 8800F and set about scanning my old slides I was a bit enthusiastic and scanned at the default resolution. The resulting images, when printed, were poor quality. I have now started re-scanning all 124 slides at 4800dpi (or is it ppi?). The trouble is that when I enhance them or change their sizes Photoshop takes ages to complete the operation. Should I scan at 4800 or 2400 then resize the images to 600 before doing any enhancing? Is there some way to scan slides so that they print at an acceptable resolution but do not involve hours of waiting? I also want to burn the scanned images to a DVD.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I want to scan a lot of color slides (some are glass if that matters) and I did a Google search and there were 2 ideas offered by several people. One used a fluorescent flashlight placed over the slide which was placed on a sheet of dark paper which had a square cut out for the slide.
The second used some sort of folded paper triangle - I printed out the pattern for it but I've got no idea how it works.

I use Irfanview and using the flashlight pressed to the slide I scanned one several times but all I see is white. I chose "picture" on my scanner and on Irfanview.

Is there a better way of doing this? One that really works?

Thanks!

A:Scanning Slides

Some scanners may depend on being able to control their built in light source for proper operation. They may not work correctly with an external light source shining through the slide.

Assuming you are talking about typical 35 mm photography slides, have you checked to see if there is any kind slide handling adapter you can purchase for your particular scanner. If you have a very large number of slides to scan in, you might want to consider getting a dedicated slide scanner.

Hi,

I have recently brought an Epson RX640 so that I can scan in my old slides, negatives etc. So far I can scan them in successfully and I can review them on the printer but I want to get them from my scanner to my laptop which I seem unable to do. Grrr!! I have managed to get them onto an old memory card but again I cannot get them from the card to the laptop. Clearly I am being very dense. Can anybody out there help me please?

I have a five-year old DELL PC and a NIKON CoolScan V ED film/slide scanner. I've been scanning slides for several months and editing them with ADOBE Photoshop Elements, and the results have been satisfactory.

Now I have my aunt's huge slide collection to go through, a project which I figure could take a year or two to complete. At present I'm considering replacing my PC with a MAC. I'm wondering if a MAC would make my slide-scanning in any way easier, faster, or better. Since I've had only PC's for 12 years and I've never used a MAC before, I'm sure there'd also be a learning curve to contend with. I'm leaning toward getting another PC -- unless I can be convinced that, in the long run, it would be worth getting a MAC, especially if doing would would facilitate my slide-scanning project. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer good advice. Thank you.

A:Any advantage for Mac or PC when scanning slides?

This will have a lot more to do with the scanning hardware/software than the computer used. You're right about the learning curve, which wouldn't be very steep in any case. My guess is you'd be using the same hardware in either case.

Does anyone know how to scan 35mm microfilm using a flat bed scanner where the picture is larger and clear without having to reinvest in another special scanner for this?

A:Scanning film/slides

Sorry I can't be much more help that what I'm about to give you.

I had the saem question a while back and the best I came across was a scanner from (I believe Microtek) that included a 35mm slide adapter (net searches for the scanner/adapter yielded a few sites showing some VERY good images).

I don NOT recommend the HP 35MM slide adapter. I have that one and (in my experience) it is a TOTAL waste of time and money.

There are a number of scanners made specifically for film/35MM slides available out there, if it is something you are going to be doing a lot, invest in one of those, being made specifically for that use they will work a LOT better than any kind of adapter you can get for a regular scanner.

Another option is to invest in a digital camera, you can project the image on a screen, snap the picture with the camera and then convert it to whatever format you need/want (and digital cameras are cheaper than 35MM/film scanners).

Hope this info helps at least a little.

I am scanning and burning old photos (not digital) and slides onto cds/dvds. Your forums have helped me before, confirming that cheap dvd players will play slide shows of photos, but more expensive ones will not. I now have an LG DVD burner so I can burn them direct to a dvd. I am using pro show gold or power producer gold (have both). I am trying to find a way to burn them so that they will play on ALL dvds. I think this is asking too much.. questions:

1. Having burned my little slide show on DVD thru Nero, using pro show gold, with music and photos, My pc won't play the show, saying "disc with unsupported format" I used a blank DVD+R (sony).
2. My cheap dvd players which played the CDs perfectly, but would't do music as well or play pro show gold file - will not play this one at all... "no disc" is the message.
3. Is there a list of DVD players anywhere with the formats they will play? I may need to check each person's player before burning their CD/DVD.
Thanks.. Bevie

I am trying to start a powerpoint slide show. On showing them on a large screen they didn't look that sharp. It was suggested to me that I up the resolution. I went from 300 to 600 and that jump made a big difference--sharpened the photos very well. But after scanning over 100 slides, 4 of them would not print the whole side, ending up with slices down the middle. I tried everything many times, and finally went into "help". I got one statement about size having to do with the resolution. But why only 4 out of the bunch. Any other ideas to help. I'll probably just leave those 4 out of the slide show, but if there is any solution I'd like to know about it. Thanks, lilart

Hi guys,

I understand the difference between dpi and ppi. I get the concepts of digital imaging. However, getting things to work right with my scanner is another story. So let's just see if you can't walk me through this specific problem.

I have a website where I post little drawings I do in my sketchbook. Originally, I was drawing them in my sketchbook, redrawing them with in painter with me Wacom and then posting them. Well, now I have a scanner, so I want to cut out the middle man.

My problem is this: I get the scanned images to look right. They are either too big once in IE, or I shrink them down in size and the image quality goes to hell. The images are roughly 2 inches square. I want to scan them in, have them be approx. 8 inches square when displayed in IE at 1024x768 and have them still look good (not pixel-y).

There are about 10 images to a page when I scan them in, then I just crop each one. I am trying to enhance work-flow, so I want the scanned-in image (8.5 x 11) to be the right size/resolution from the beginning, so that once cropped, the images are ready to post.

There is another issue: file size. When I was drawing them in painter, they were coming out at about 14 kb. For some reason the images I'm scanning in, even when cropped down and at the same resolution are equaling 150 kb in size.

Can anyone help, I can't seem to get it.

Thanks!

I hope this is the place to post this question. The digital photography/imaging was a possibility but was not sure.

I am running Windows XP - Home. I received an HP Scanner/Printer for Christmas and yesterday I scanned in some medical reports for my mother. I then e-mailed them to her for her records.

The problem comes in when I view them on my computer the resolution is horrible. It looks very blurry. When I printed a copy out from her computer - it came out of the printer real fuzzy and not crystal clear like the original report from the doctor.

How do I rectify this problem?

The HP software that you have installed may not be Vista compatible or you have it in Compatibility Mode. Go to Programs and Features in the Control Panel and uninstall all the related HP software, then reboot as needed. Make sure the printer is disconnected.

Then download and install the latest software from HP: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&lang=en&product=3737195

My wife's laptop is taking over 10 minutes to boot, and web pages load very slowly. I use AVG Antivirus (purchased version) and noticed there were no test results for any scans that should be running regularly. I re-installed AVG (version 8.0) and it removed 2 worms (Generic_r.P)and a registry key pointing to an infected file.

I went through all 5 steps on TSF, and additionally uninstalled Windows Defender since Panda said it wasn't running properly (even though the program said it was working fine). I also used StartUpLite to disable unneeded programs at startup, and ran Windows File Protection successfully. I trid to run Chkdsk c:/r but it didn't seem to run successfully after rebooting. My drive doesn't need to be defragmented.

In view of previous comments about the inadvisability of simply deleting anything in the AddData folder I am wary of doing so but can't believe that this number of files serves any useful purpose . Hello, and thanks for being there to help. I've followed all the steps in the Prep Guide, leaving out the Micro Trend software due to the recent flaw they discovered. My computer is now scanning clean with Microsoft Live One Care, Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware SE, AVG Anti-Spyware, Bit Defender and Stinger 260. I deactivate the Live One Care at start up so I don't have duelling firewalls and will likely uninstall it altogether as I prefer Zone Alarm. The AVG Anti-Spyware is also not running at startup, just being used as a back-up scanner. I'm wondering, though, if all the scanning programs on my computer are slowing it down. Also, Zone Alarm is regularly recording blocking outgoing messages to station6k.dscga.com, with the destination IP as 198.79.88.6:445. Obviously, something is still going on. My computer originated as a work computer on which I issued insurance policies remotely, logging into a remote desktop. It was given to me when I left employment with the company, and I have administrative rights. However, Zone Alarm is also blocking outgoing messages to my former company's website. They did monitor me, so I suppose this was how they did it. I'm wondering, though, how I can turn this off. Another thing I'm wondering, is what I need to do to reconfigure the computer as a stand-alone. It is not attached to a network at all anymore, and I just learned that the way it is set up made it vulnerable to Trojan attack. My computer techie skills are not up to par, I'm a... Read more

can i scan a .exe to find out if it is safe to run?

A:scanning .exe

If you asking if you can scan an exe program, then yes, if your antivirus allows it you can use the right click to do an on-demand scan of an individual file, whether the file is a .txt, .pdf, .avi, .jpeg as long as the file exists, seeing as avs can scan corrupted files it will be able to scan it, and if you have an av like comodo or avast, or norton you can run it in a virtualized environment called "sandboxing"

hi,
I ve got an average, run of the mill scanner
it gives great results, but Ive noticed
sometimes the skin tones come out a bit redder than
I would like.

Maybe the paper has something to do with this
eg magazine or newspaper.

Anyway, Im wondering, is there better equipment out
there, maybe more professional.

I want top quality scans, or as good as possible,
If you re going to the trouble of scanning pics it s silly to accept second best.

Looking at my scanner , its so basic, I can t even
see a name on it

The controls via scanner and camera wizard are very
basic too with just colour and brightness to adjust

on slideing scales.

Surely there must be something better out there

It would be interesting to get an opinion or
advice from someone who is into scanning and getting
top results

thanks in advance

Hi I am just needing a bit of help on this matter. I have AVG to run my scanning but I am wanting to know if it has to scan all of my files on my pc or just the ones that are downloaded through IE and temp internet files. Does this make sense to anyone? When my pc does the scanning it takes like 3 hours to complete because I have many files on here. I'm not advanced enough in PC lingo to understand it all but I am assuming the only things that can get "infected" are either the ones downloaded or loaded on pc from another source like zip drives, etc. Any help or links to check much appreciated. Thank you.

A:AVG scanning

Any file can be infected - you need to scan it all

do this before scanning

DownLoad EasyCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download414.html

Use the clear files and Unnecessary files buttons – I do not recommend
using the Duplicates files button as many dupes are there on purpose.

Not all files will delete – that is normal.

In the unnecessary button I check the top 4 entries

Empty the trash and then scan

When carrying out a scan I always opt for using Malwayrebytes Anti Malware in Quick scan mode or Full scan mode because Microsoft Security Essentials is so slow. Will this be equally effective at picking up any nasties. I still have Security Essentials as my first defence.

I have windows vista 32 bit and a Brother all in one printer and can't scan more than one page to fax. I also seem to be having a problem with OR software. When I bought the all in one I was using windows XP. Can anybody help me?

A:Pc-fax scanning

I had similar problems (and a lot more) with my Brother multifunction. The scan would not work properly and the OR S/W was for the birds. I fought Brother for 18 months and they finally agreed to take it back for €120 (I paid €340 for it). Their support was completely useless too.

PS: For the OCR problem you might try this program:

Hello,

I have run every "anti-anything" to try to solve this. I have a laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate and for a while, about 5-10 minutes after booting a scan begins. I can see the HD running non-stop. During this, the laptop is unusable.

Today, it started freezing with no HD light. It took almost an hour of rebooting to get it running. During the day, the scanning has happened 4 times. It is driving me crazy and I have checked everything I can think of. I have no scheduled scans of any kind set up in my anti-virus and anti-malware software.

As an example of a symptom, if I'm watching a YouTube video, it starts with the video and sound going out of sync. The HD starts running constantly. If I close Firefox, it will take a while to close but the sound from the video keeps playing for several minutes. If I pull up task manager, it will show Firefox as still running but there is no window. I end the task and again it takes several minutes to drop from the task manager window.

Any suggestions as where to start to solve this before I check into a mental health facility?

PS I have two other drives (One with XP and one with Vista) that if substituted for the above drive run just fine. I'm at my wits end. HELP

Hi all,

I have a scanner HP 5300 that until recently would scan to MS PP without difficulty. It will scan to every other application possible but not PP. I reinstalled the scanner software. I used "repair" to repair office. No change. I get a variety of error messages. The general gist is...

HPScan.exe encountered an error and will close. Please restart the program.

The errors are not coming from MS PP.

I uninstalled the scanner and installed another HP scanner. The 5400 series and the problem remains. This pc is running W2K.

Any ideas?

How can I scan a text document into Word, Works, or Word Perfect as text?
Iuse XP and HP printer/scaner 1315.

You need an OCR ( Optical Character Recognition ) app like Abbyy Finereader.
You might recheck the software that came with your scanner to see if something like that was included. It came with my Epson scanner.

I am not familiar with that scanner. Here is the Manual, which will answer that question and any future questions, if you save the PDF file to your documents or print it.

So... hi
It's been a while since I've really posted. Had nothing to contribute really. But recently I've had something in mind; what if~ I'm scanning with my usual stuff (antivirus, malware scanner and others), and it's all clear from there. But I feel like there's something wrong with the system? (A few hints of lag here and there where it shouldn't, I just visited a new site, I just downloaded a program from the internet)
What should one do to be extra sure? And if there's a post about this already I'm sorry, just wanted your guys feedback and if you've ever felt the same paranoia lol.
