Q: Word or Excel Files as Attachments in Email

I have a laptop with Vista 64 and use Microsoft Office 2007. Within the last few months I noticed that attachments to email no matter what client I use cannot be opened. (Word and Excel) If I save a file and go to word or excel I can open the file normally. This only occurs when I double click on a file that is an attachment. I have attached a jpg file that shows the verbiage of the actual error. This one was through Lotus notes but it doesnt matter if I am using outlook or gmail it always generates something similiar. Hopefully someone has some ideas so I can rectify this situation. I have tried numerous solutions and have not had any luck in resolving this problem.

Some of the people I send Word attachments to get this error message when they try to open it.

"the document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.

Just recently (last 2 months), I have not been able to save any email word or excel attachments. I can open the document. I can even edit it. But if I try to "save as", the info page shows it trying to be saved in a temporary file on my C drive. It doesn't matter what I do: let the icon spin, try to load, try to save, try a different path. Word (or excel) simply stops responding, then the error message pops up and I have to close the program.

If I open the file again, the prompt to save the file appears, but the same process occurs. I was fortunate (and have no idea how it happened, think I just "saved" it) that a 75 page document that I needed to edit somehow got "autosaved" in my document library, and so I am able to work on that one. The original is still sitting in my email in box because I can't save it :-(

This follows a change to the look/layout of my "info" page that happened roughly the same time. It used to be that I could simply save any document by going to "file", "save as" and it would take me to my library files. Now I have a two boxes at the top with a tile list of my document file folders. I have to either browse my C drive for the file, or click on the appropriate file folder.

What change has happened that my word program no longer saves as I always have?

You have not mentioned what version of Office you are using, but you could try repairing Office as a start. To do that:

Open Control panel,
select Programs & Features,
scroll down to Microsoft Office,
Right Click on it & select Change,
This should open a couple of Repair options to try.

Also make sure office is up to date.

Recently, I'm having slow file loading while opening ms word files and excel files directly from windows explorer. It takes a minute to load, however it opens immediately if I open .doc files or .xls files directly from their application software. It also take a minute for MS Word and Excel software to shut down.

I have run my antivirus (Symantec) and MBAM but they all show no virus was found. I'm not sure what should I do next, please advice.

Hello all-
I have just gotten ms office 2003 on my computer - i am familiar with ms word, but i think this newer version did something annoying: i wanted to email a set of info from home to work email. i have these in text files. i uploaded these as attachments to an email. when i opened the email, ALL the text from the text files was IN the email, with NO text file attachments.

i also had ONE ms office document ".doc" attached, and it acted like it should: just attached to the email.

is this text file thing something that ms word 2003 does on purpose? i have never had this happen before with my web-based email acct.

how can i turn off this function?

It might be something your work is doing. I have sent .txt documents fine before. I would ask your IT department how they have it setup.

Does anyone know if one can create an e-mail form letter with 2-3 attachments for a small (50-100 pcs.) mailing to to customers or prospects? My review of Word tells me that I may insert a file which may work, but it may depend upon the user for opening it correctley. If you don't have an answer please advise where I might look, for one

I have been having difficulty opening email attachments (Word or Excel). Our new computer came with XP and a trial version of Office 2003. When the trial ran out I uninstalled Office 2003 and installed my Office 97 version. Now when I try to open an attachment in Outlook I receive the following error: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\.....doc is not a valid Win32 application.
Doing a right click-shift does not allow me to save the document as a word or excel file either.
Also when Outlook downloads the file from my internet service provider, the software icon changes from a MS icon to a wordpad icon.

Any suggestions?

Hi i do have an excel problem can someone please help me 'cause its kind of urgent. I dohave this user he cannot open up excel any excel file send to him as an attachment.But when i copied this attachment to the desktop and double click then the file would open. Have him go to Tools-Options-General tab. Make sure "Ignore other applications" is NOT checkmarked.

If that doesn't work, close Excel, then Start-Run and type:

excel.exe /regserver

You may need to include the path to the exe. Let me know if that doesn't work either.

Recently I send out a bulk email for our CEO (ya, that's right, the big guy!?!). I had a mailing list as my datasource, created the document in Word (as my email editor), attached two files and sent it off. However, once the merge was performed and everything was sent out the attachments either weren't on the resulting mass email, or only the icons for the attachments appeared. Simply, the attachments seemed to be stripped off the resulting email.

Does anyone have an explanation for this? I've looked on the MS Knowledge base to no avail. I'd really like to be able to explain it to the CEO so I look like less of a bumbling idiot!

When I start in word and do the mail merge/email function I can send a form letter type text email to everyone in a mailing database but I can't figure out how to have each email attach one (the same) document as an attachment. I just bought a computer with an XP OS and WordPerfect version 10 as my word processing program. I'm trying to send my resume that was done on WordPerfect to users that are compaining that they cannot open my attachment.

I'm finding out that these users are using Word and they cannot open my attachment.

Mijo, the easist way would be doing a "save as" in WP to a Word doc format. It may or may not keep all the formatting though. The other option may be to save it in a earlier version of WP that the Word users should be able to open.

I'm not entirely sure what is going on here as I've never really worked with Outlook Express.

What happens is the person will get an email with an attachment. When I click on the email attachment (double click) to open it, excel, for example, will pop up and go to not responding. Yet, if I save it to the desktop and open it that way it works fine.

Any suggestions?

Hello and thanks... for your help and attention to this matter.

I'm helping my mom with an attachment problem she's had for 3 weeks or so now. She recieved an email with attachment -- which the computer didnt know how to open and she selected micro soft word.. and I'm guessing that the box in the lower left of the pop up was checked - that maked all future files of same extention open up in that program.. (Jpegs.. sent in mail are opening fine)

the main difference she notices is when reading the email in question - when she click's on the "paper cllip" attachment button in Outlook Express..
-- it used to have the logo of ?? a waving flag with four translucent patches with varing colors on it?? (best description I can give) It looks like a microsoft icon..

--- Now these attachments have the Micor soft word icon page with blue background and " W " on the page...

I have been to the Explorer folder ( with the magnifiying icon)
looking at drive C
Tools column and selecting "Folder Options"
then selecting file types...

... this is where the Registered file types are kept.. and I think it is here where I may be able to find the solution.. but I dont know which one to delete..

My office manager just received a new computer (lucky lady!), however, she is not able to use the email link under 'file and folder' tasks to send any office docs etc as email attachments (her preferred method). She also cannot right-click and have it show up as 'send to: mail recipient"

She must send all through opening email first. If she has the doc open and clicks onto the email document icon it sends the file in the body of the message (even though the email as attachment option is checked.)

Any help? I like to keep the office manager happy as she's great to work with!


p.s. we have done all recent OS and Office updates.

One of my users here is complaining that he cannot open Excel docs that have been attached to an email.
He is an Outlook 2000 user on a Win 2000 PC.

A pattern is forming - this problem seems to occur when a Macintosh user using a CE Software QuickMail Pro client sends a mail with an attached Excel doc.
The Windows OutLook client receives the mail but the attached excel docs have a diferent file extension on them of: .dat !

You can open these files if you rename them and save them to the desktop then open them with the Excel app and they open fine.

Any ideas ???

Hi, one of my users works with .tif files all day long from her email. She is now unable to open them from the attachment. She gets the message "The Command failed to execute". Other file typs do open. If the tif file is saves to the desktop it will open. If you re-boot the pc, a few will open then you get the error again. Here are some specs:

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.

I am having problems opening microsoft word files (attachments/uploaded files.)
I am able to save the file to my computer and open them without problems.

The issue is when downloading a file and simply trying to open them from the internet ie as an email attachment. I have also uploaded a cv to a site and when i try and open this i get the same error message

"this file could not be found.
try one or more of the following
*check the spelling of the name of the document.
*Try a different file name
( gives directory path)

Its just strange im sure i could just open documents to view before without having to save everything.

Just to clarify when 'save as' to my machine the documents are perfect. Its just the 'open' function when i just want to quickly view an attachment will not find the file all of a sudden.

I can't download any email attachments or files from Internet Explorer 8.
Until the other day I'd be able to download files or programmes no problem but something's happened and, when I click to download an attachment or file, I can see the usual dialogue box showing the download progress (i.e. it's being saved to my hard drive) but, when that's complete, the dialogue box disappears and there's no sign of the file that's been downloaded! If I repeat the process the same thing happens over and over.
I notice that MS Security Essentials can't update itself either, though Windows has installed some new updates today.
Any ideas?

When I start in Word or Excel (office xp pro) and hit
file, send to, send as an attachment the word email
editor will pop up with the word document as an
attachment (as it should). I then put the address I want
to send it to and hit the send button. The send button
greys while the mouse button is pushed (as it should) but

Side notes: It doesn't mater if outlook is open or closed same effect either way. I can send attachment directly from outlook.

In my company, one of my bosses is running Windows XP and has an intermittent problem. Word and Excel email attachments will intermittently not open, Word and Excel will also not launch from the Desktop. In Outlook 2007, previewing a file shows the file intact.

Sometimes, the files will open, but it takes up to five minutes for them to open. I have made sure these documents are associated with the proper program and I have cleared the temporary file in Outlook by going through regedit to find the culprit HKEY.

I am totally baffled as to why this is occuring. Can you help?

The first time I did it, I merged all records at one time and everyone received the same email twice. The second time I did it, I merged about 20-30 at a time, in different batches, but it still duplicated everyone. Any suggestions on what's going on and then how I can fix it/create a work-around. (One I've half considered is importing the Excel file to Access and trying it from there...but I'm not an Access expert and I'm hoping someone has an 'easier' solution.)

This has happened after I upgraded to Windows 10. The help section tells me to associate Word & Excel with a mail program but doesn't tell me how to do that. I am using Windows 10 mail app. I know I can go into settings to associate files with programs but I don't know what files to associate with what program. I can't find another free email program that works well with Windows 10. Their own mail app has a lot of problems. Can anyone help me out?

I am trying to help someone do a mass emailing for marketing his product and have 2 questions please. He uses Outlook 2010, WORD 2007 and a "newer" version of EXCEL. The email addresses are in an EXCEL spreadsheet. The general message, which contains pictures, is in a WORD document.

1. Is there a way to automate sending an individualized email to only one address at a time?

2. Can the message (the WORD doc) be inserted instead of attached?

We have Pc's that run XP Pro & a server that runs Win2000 Server. We are running Office 97 that is installed on all pcs and server. I moved some files around to different drives for space & then mapped the pc's accordingly. One of the users is saying that before I moved the files, they would come up in alphabetic order. This is when you would open the program then open the file through file/open in the Word or Excel program. I did not notice when moving them that they were in any order. I looked every place I could think of in the programs to indicate order it finds the files but cannot find any thing. Can anyone help me with this. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

So when i open any file like a PDF or something, it's automatically opened as an excel document when i want it to be word. I've already tried setting word as a default app but it still doesn't work.
Also, i tried going to the downloaded files and pressed 'open documents like this with word from now on' but afterwards when i open that same file it still opens in excel. Can someone please help me, i have to print stuff for school but I can't because of this.

Well you can Print in the interim. Instead of pushing a file to an application via its File Association, you can always open the Application and then open the document and print it.

So if you try to open a PDF, DOC, DOCx, and others they are all associated to MS Excel ?

Did you Right-Click on a PDF file and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF viewer you use ) ?

I have been using Windows 7 for about six months now, and have recently experienced a rather strange event when trying to access my Word and/or Excel documents. When I have opened either of these programs, and clicked on the small yellow file icon at the top to look at the available files, I get the normal list of those files, and can choose which one to open. However, occasionally after clicking the yellow "open" icon, the page is completely blank, that is to say none of my saved files are showing. After a time (usually about five or six minutes), the page loads and I see all these files so that I can then open the required one. If I go to Task Manager, nothing is showing as running, so I am at a loss why this should be. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful for their advice. Many thanks.

Suddenly it won't all word, excel, pdf, jpg files with message "the file format is not supported or the file is corrupted". I checked the system and found all those files were modified around 7:30PM, March 3, 2017. I copied the files to another good computer and they cannot be opened too. I created new files on the infected computer and they are ok to open.

I read some old post regarding the Ransomware, but on my computer I didn't find any decrypt instruction files, I also ran the IDTool and it didn't report anything.

I don't have regular backup of the files, is there any possibility to identify the virus and recover the file? Thanks!

My problem is that when I link an Excel file with Word, I get a graph with grid lines behind it. How can I get rid of these grid lines? I'm not referring to the grid lines within the graph itself, but the grid lines behind the graph. It looks like a nice graph siting on an Excel spreadsheet with the cells behind it. I've fiddled around with it and gotten the cells to "shrink around it", but you can still see the cells around the edges of the graph.

I'd send the file, but this system wouldn't take a .xls file. If someone wants to look at my problem graph, I'd be happy to email the file.

Hi Everyone,

I'm using MS Office 2003 on a PC, and tried to send Word, Excel & .pdf files to a Mac user. She has Office for Mac 2011 installed on her computer.

She cannot open any of the files. I think she may not have Adobe Reader installed, which explains why the .pdf will not open. So far as the .doc and .xls files ... I'm stumped. Other than recommending that she download Open Office, does anyone have any ideas?

There many folders shared from server but it has affected to my 4 shared folders.
There are some PDF files I can open.  i.e.  out of 20 files 2 to 3 files.
Not able to figure out what exactly causing this issue.
I have done Antivirus scanning, but nothing found.  (From Server as well as from Client --(Mapping share drive)  - )

I have gone many of forum, it says ransom virus.  cryptolocker.  Tried with Malware tools and antivirus nothing found and nothing could recover.
Tried recovery softwares also.
There is no option from server to store previous version so tried from client windows 7 machines but there also unable to restore
Copied files to freshly installed machine and with all updated of windows and antivirus tried to recover but not succeeds.
Please help me to diagnose this problem and let me know the solution.

I would like to know how to convert old files .wpd/.wpl to Excel or Word. O/S is XP. These files have been saved to a floppy and the old computer has died so cannot access files to resave.
I've tried changing the extension to txt, doc. dbf, xls etc. and opening up in several different applications but receive only non-text information (squares etc.).
Can someone help with this dinosaur file?

Our sister company apparently contracted a worm that changed all of their .doc(x) and .xls(x) files to .exe files. Does anyone here have experience with this worm, and if so what was your solution?

If what I'm reading online is right, this worm is pretty old so I'm not sure how they would get it. I'm also not at that site so the only information I have is what my boss has told me.

Is it possible to retrieve/restore Word or Excel files that were removed to the recycled bin and then the bin was emptied? I am using Windows 95. Thank you.

Unless you are willing to pay to get them back I'd say give them a nice funeral. Sorry but this is a fact. There are sites on the web that can retrieve them but they charge. If you plan on doing this do not use the computer for if you write over them it makes it harder to retreive them.

Iwas trying to create a database using excel and mail merge in word and in process saved a lot of files to see if I had it right before entering lots of data - how do I delete them now- under find file i put the name and it says not found but i can see it under file as I open word or excel?????

I had recently installed Norton Antivirus for my PC. After installing this, I was unable to open any Word or Excel documents that are saved under my C: or A: drives. The error message I'm getting is "The file(filename) is not available". My operating system is Windows XP-Pro. And I'm using Windows 2002. Thanks for any help.

Well, it appears our desktop has contracted something...Microsoft Office 2010 will not open any files as it states they are all corrupt. First, I've done a lot of searching on the internet and notice others are experiencing the same problem. Some of them are stating they get a screen asking for a ransom, apparently the Cryptolocker virus. We are not getting this message.
I've tried repairing files though a lot of different avenues found on the internet, but none have worked.
I thought possibly the files were being corrupted while attempting to open them, so I copied a few files that I hadn't tried opening to my laptop running the same version of Office, but they appeared corrupted on it as well. I tried running through the repair procedures on this machine and it didn't work either.
Two things: one, do I have some kind of virus on this desktop, and two, has anyone found a way to repair the corrupted files?
