I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What OS are you running & what was the previous OS?
Your system info says

You mentioned that you installed XP SP2. You are in the Vista Support forum.
It seems like the BSOD is chasing me...
This time it's about my own laptop.
Its a Compaq cq40 and It's been acting very strange since a couple of weeks.
Suddenly a BSOD will come up and restar my computer.... but I can still use it...
I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....
I'm posting the dump files...
Thanks in advance!
It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!
Post back if you need more help or if you are ready to continue.

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

Hello all.Just as the title said.
My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.
P.S sorry for the late reply

I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.

where I have to download the ahci driver?
how do I update my bios (I still lay the problem update / flash bios).
First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:
General XP Downgrade Guide for HP Laptops - HP Support Forum
NOTE: Please read this thread fully.
If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.
SATA Drivers - Load in Windows XP Setup on Dual Boot
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

If you do not have any installation media, please contact your PC administrator or PC/device manufacturer. I have already checked. Compaq does not have any tools for Windows 10. What should I do? The SUPPORT PAGE for that model says it came with FreeDOS, which probably means that Windows 10 did not come from the factory. Using the Windows 10 Media Creation tool will give you a good place to start. Make the media, either DVD ro USB flash drive, and then boot to that. That's an old machine... humm...
If you can't get at it via the BIOS, have you tried simply disabling it in the device manager? Also, when you bring up your system stats, does the computer show you all of your RAM, or a slightly smaller number (according to PNY, this machine should only ever report 256MB max)?

I fixed several annoying problems with help from a furum member, but in the process sounds, start-up +Microsoft noises through the inbuilt speakers have disappeared.
When I plug my Skype in via USB port minimal sound can be heard, as can through headphone speskers when plugged in. The media player handles a CD with similar result.
When I look at the volume indicator in the bottom right tray, it indicates fluctuating levels maybe 3 - 6%, despite the control being at 100.

I have my Compaq Presario CQ40 144TU (Intel C2D T5800, 160 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM).

I am using the same customized CD in this below entire post, so the problem of SATA not supported by XP is elimintated.
I had also setup a ubuntu installation which i never used.
I had a dual booting on my system with Windows XP Pro and Linux Ubuntu, last week I tried to delete the partitions of Ubuntu from the Computer Management window in Win XP. The system got hanged and I did a force shut down. On restart the system freezes after a couple of minnutes on the desktop. After doing multiple restarts(force) the OS is not booting up at all. I want to disable "hardware, Advanced, System Protection, Remote" tabs from system properties dialog box( screen shot attached).
The user should only able to access change computer name feature. Other feature should be disabled/removed.
I there any way to achieve it?
thanks in advance.
I'm inclined to say no, for a very simple reason.
Changing the computer name requires administrator access. Given that, the user already has full control over the entire computer, therefore he can change whatever he wants.
What's the purpose of such "limitation"?
Praying there's an easy solution to this one.
After minimizing one internet page my son opened another - the mouse curser went wild on the screen, the computer started beeping, & a fatal error msg w/blue screen appeared & the computer shut down.
My younger son, thinking he could help, restarted the computer & may have approved a "System Recovery"- or something to that nature.
The computer went through a timed loading process, then opened up to - yes- the original default Compaq screen & settings with none of the software installed after that point. The hard drive shows as having way too much free space. I cannot find any of my files, pictures, documents, etc.
There are no restore points to go back to. I did turn the restore option off, then on again- still no restore points appeared.
Before I continue to possibly over-write my precious files I'd like to know the best steps for returning to where I was before this fatal error, or at least what steps I should take to recover the majority of the data on my hard drive.
Thanks. Hope there's someone out there who can help me as much as was provided some years ago during my successful bout with invading viruses!
The more that you use the hard drive, the more likely it is that your stuff may be overwritten (lost). So, minimize any use of the system until you've either recovered your stuff - or have given up on it.Do you have another computer that you can use to reply to us? If so, we'll help you through determining if theres stuff to recover - and how to do it safely. While waiting for a reply, you can download a copy of this free program and burn it to a CD (in preparation for recovering stuff): http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/What I'm looking at, once you post back, is using the Ultimate Boot CD to check and see if Windows backed up your stuff into a .OLD directory before the restore (if so, that's an easy fix). If not, then we'll suggest some other tools for recovering erased data.Read other 14 answers
How would I use the recovery partition on my laptop? I want to restore it because this blue screen of death is annoying me when I recently installed Vista. The error shows up at random times. Most of the error messege I get was a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT screen. I forgot to save the xp restore onto a disc. I tried pressing f11 when booted and nothing shows up. So is there a way I can boot up the recovery partition without a disc? This laptop is windows vista capable. So there shouldn't be a problem. I have a gig of ram, amd turion64 x2 1.6ghz, and nvidia go6100.
This is my first post, and i apolagize for showing up in need!
I've got a compaq that's probably two years old. Running windows xp home.
I just attempted to do a system restore and it all went smooth, till now.
I'm down to the last screen that reads
"Thank you, Congratulations, your're ready to go!" At this point I should be able to hit the finish button and be up and rolling. We'll when I hit the finish button it never finishes, it just sits with the hourglass thingy running"
I gave it thirty minutes just to make sure I wasn't being impatient. The computer in non responsive. I resorted to unplugging the computer and tried starting in safe mode. That just told me that my installation wasn't complete and took me to the same congratulations page.
Any tips on how to get through this???
Oilspot: I had a similar issue with a Compaq computer that I had added hardware to(SCSI card) after I purchased....it would not complete the system restore. I had to remove the additional hardware, and put the computer back to its original hardware configuration. Not sure if that is your issue here. Here's some troubleshooting steps from Compaq.HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Troubleshooting System Recovery Problems in Windows XPHope that helps.Read other 5 answers
I have a Compaq Presario 5000 series running Windows 98. All was well until I tried to boot the computer yesterday and got the following error message:
"Operating system not found on any devices. Press any key to try again."
Pressing Del or any other key when it's trying to boot will only get me into the Compaq setup menu, not the BIOS setup. Everything looks fine in there, though.
I opened the tower up and the cables, fan, etc. seem to be fine.
My floppy and CD drives seem to be working, but when I try to use the Win 98 boot disk I get this message:
"Disk I/O error. Replace the disk and press any key."
I have some *really* important files that have not been backed up, so I *have* to get access to the HD ... once I've backed up these files, then I don't care what happens - I'll reformat if I have to. I have two hard drives on this system (and of course all my important stuff is on c drive) so I could swap them and try it, but I can't figure out how to get into Setup to re-designate them.
When something like this happens very suddenly I always look first at the possibility of a virus. Can you mount the drive in another machine and run a virus scan against it ? (Do not try to boot from it or open any files until after the virus scan)
I am having an issue with a friends computer that I am currently working on. She ran the Compaq System Recovery that came with her PC. During the recovery she said it told her that her files would be safe and would not get removed. I searched up and down the computer and could not find any of her important documents and photos... the weird thing is that her computer is showing the hard drive is 160GB but it is still using up 42GB of that. I changed the folder options to view all hidden files and folders and system files, I calculated how much hard drive space all visible files and folders were taking up and it just didn't add up. I did notice that there was one folder in the C:\ drive that would not open... "Access Denied" and there was another partition (D:\) that was for the system recovery but would not let me view anything inside that partition. I will have to post the name of that "access denied" folder later bc I'm not in front of that PC at this time. Any ideas to where Compaq System Recovery might store those files? Or any other suggestions?Read other answers
