Why is WPAD not caching?

Q: Why is WPAD not caching?

We use a WPAD file hosted on a Websense appliance and use IE11 on Windows 7 x64.

We are seeing some performance issues with the Websense delivery of WPAD and have discovered that every computer is making a large amount of calls to the websense appliance to retrieve WPAD.dat. (Up to 1000 per machine in some cases)

We have worked with Websense and found that they were returning a 'no-cache' option in the WPAD response header. Via a patch we have had this removed.
However I still can't find a cached WPAD file on my machine that I am using for testing and have checked all the registry entries I can think of related to caching.
Does anyone have any ideas?

For reference, the WPAD.dat is (edited of course):
// Start of Script
function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
// Convert everything to lower case
var lhost = host.toLowerCase();
host = lhost;
//Local Networking Match
if (isPlainHostName(host) ||
shExpMatch(host, "localhost.*") ||
shExpMatch(host, "*.ourdomain.net") ||
shExpMatch(host, "*.local") ||
isInNet(dnsResolve(host), "", "") ||
isInNet(dnsResolve(host), "", "") ||
isInNet(dnsResolve(host), "", "") ||
isInNet(dnsResolve(host), "", ""))
return "DIRECT";
//Host Matching
if (dnsDomainIs(host, "*.partnerdomain1.com") ||
dnsDomainIs(host, "*.partnerdomain2.com") ||
dnsDomainIs(host, "*.ourdomain.net") ||)
return "DIRECT";
//Expression Matching
//if (shExpMatch(url, "*ourintranet.net"))
//return "DIRECT";
// Default - Use Proxy
return "PROXY proxy.ourdomain.net:8080";
// End of function

We use DNS to point proxy.ourdomain.net to the Websense appliance.

Any suggestions / ideas welcomed.

Preferred Solution: Why is WPAD not caching?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello ladies/gents, I've got a rather frustrating problem which I'm hoping somebody can help me with.

The Company which I work for has recently acquired a hosted web security solution, which acts as a web proxy amongst other things.

We have got a DNS CNAME setup which refers to one of our webservers as 'wpad', and when IE is configured to 'automatically detect settings' - wpad is accessed and the proxy settings are obtained from the wpad.dat file which lives on our webserver.

The wpad.dat file contains proxy exceptions and rules which are generated by the hosted web security system.

The hosted solution which we're using requires that all users login from a known IP address - which is fine for our office users, but is causing problems for remote users. The default behaviour of IE is that if WPAD is not reachable, then proxy settings will be ignored and the user will be allowed directly to the internet - but unfortunately the wpad file is being cached on the local laptops causing the users to be blocked from the internet (as they're not from a known IP).

I've written a .bat script which runs a simple del \wpad*.dat /s command which the users can use to clear the cached file - but I'd like to prevent IE from caching the file in the first place!

I found a Microsoft article here: How to disable automatic proxy caching in Internet Explorer which unfortunately doesn't work for us. I setup a test GP object and performed the change manually to the registry, neither had an ... Read more

Q: Wpad

Hi I was interested to set the WPAD on my network. Before I implemented it I made my research and it many are saying that it is not that safe as a rogue proxy could be easily set. Has anyone ever used this feature and do you know if it true that a man in the middle attack would be easy to do with this kind of setup??

We are setting up a new transparent web proxy on one of our subnets, and on the other subnets we are using explicit proxy which the clients get the WPAD url trough option 252 in DHCP. On the new subnet with transparent proxy, no WPAD is configured in DNS
or DHCP. We would like to use "Automatically detect settings" on all machines, and this shouldn't cause any issues as it would go to direct communication when not finding WPAD on the new subnet.
Now to the problem: Even trough no WPAD is configured to be offered in DNS or DHCP for the new subnet, IE still pulls the WPAD from the other subnet, if the client ever has been on that network, and tries to use the explicit proxy that blocks the traffic from
that network.
Why is IE continuing to grab information from a WPAD that isn't offered? Same goes for Skype for business and Outook that uses exchange Online. Non-MS applications like Chrome does not use the WPAD, and acts correctly.
We have verified that the WPAD isn't offered trough FwcTool so configuration should be correct, but we still seen in C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\winhttp that it pulls the PAC.
Any ideas?

Good day!
A Windows Security window started popping up in the desktop PC of our users yesterday.
The specific message is "The server wpad.<localdomain> at wpad.<localdomain> requires a username and password. Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without
a secure connection)."
It's irritating our users and they are asking if it's a security issue.
We never enabled a WPAD in our network. What triggered it and how do we disable it?

A:Windows Security Pop-up Window Re: WPAD

I am honestly not sure why this is happening.  The only thing I can imagine is that somehow your router is giving out this setting (Automatically detect settings) in it's DHCP responses.
To overcome this permanently, one way would be to apply a Group Policy.  The setting you are looking for is:
User Configuration/Windows Components/Internet Explorer Maintenance/Connection/Automatic Browser Configuration.
Turn this off.

I configured http://wpad/wpad.dat pac file. It works very well with all browsers and applications. Browsers and applications could work in failover. But I can't configure it to work with that scenario:
Two proxies with different access permissions.
Some people connect to first proxy, that allows social sites.
Other people connect to second proxy, that blocks social sites.
How to use separate proxies for specific people?

My work PC's already 4 years old and it's a DIY desktop,not a branded one. And since the day I bought it till now, I've been very keen on avoiding all kinds of trouble, especially viruses. But last night, actually it's been a week, a lot of things had been going on with it from problems with the network icon loading times, long post boot times, recurring browser redirects, to almost 82 proxy entries (Wpad related) in my registry. My latest DDS scan also revealed I have more than 50 domain listings??? I managed to clean the 82 proxies but I think there are still remnants. I can only do much as my knowledge permits, hope someone here can help. Attached here are my scans. Thank you very much in advance.

Good afternoon,
I would like to implement the workaround "Stop WPAD using a host file entry" as outlined in
the article https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/security-updates/securitybulletins/2016/ms16-077. However, the networking team is concerned that the value is a broadcast address and that systems will broadcast to the local subnet if
that value is used.
My question is: Will the client broadcast a WPAD or ISATAP query if I edit the hosts file as outlined?

My assumption is that Microsoft put careful thought into the matter but my networking team is asking if or would have been a better choice.
Thank you,
Note: Since we are are on a premier contract I am looking for an official Microsoft response but others are welcome to comment as well.

Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

I just have a question about this. I got a vista home premium 32-bit gateway laptop. And I see the option to delete DNS Cache in CCleaner. All I'm curious about is, what is that really going to do? Anything major besides make my pages load .2 seconds slower?

A:DNS Caching

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

Ok, so my hard drive in ACHI mode does not allow me to enable write caching but in compatibility mode it does.

Should I enable write caching?

Also this whole thing about memory loss is bugging me on what they are talking about. I have a laptop with a battery and mostly has power. But what if power were to cut off or it gets somehow unpluged, will my HD be corrupt? or would that "Word" document I was working on that was not saved be gone, everything else will be fine?

A:Write caching

You can read this tutorial from Vistax64 on it. Basically, it's not recommended for laptops without a UPS. I believe if the power were to go out, only the temp. cache would be lost, so like your word document you were working on might be lost if it were to go out.

I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on and
Using DHCP.

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

I am about to buy my SSD, but I don't know whether I can use the Crucial M4 64GB for caching, next to using it for my complete OS and a game (maybe two, 7 GB average). Because what I would like to do, is put my OS on it (Win7 64-bit) and the game. And then use (a part of) the space left (around 30GB, reserving 27GB for the OS and 3~4GB for the game) for Caching.

Will this work? Or can I only use the Intel SSD Caching on a empty SSD?

P.S. Someone told me I could only use ~20GB or 60GB for SRT Caching, I find this hard to believe, is it true?
P.P.S. Is it true I ought to put the SRT Caching to 64GB? Or would there actually be a difference if I would put my OS and Call of Duty 4 directly on my SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:SSD SRT caching question

hmm; Personally I've never seen CACHING to be configurable.

Placing the pagefile.sys entirely on an SSD would seem doable . . .

So, it's time I asked a question. I've got this awesome little 7eeePC you've probably read about as I babble on about it like a schoolgirl in many of my posts and I'd like to show of it's WEI score to convince folks it's not quite as castrated as some have insinuated. Only, the machine will not complete system assessment complaining about write caching not being enabled. I try to enable it but

In order to shoehorn 7057 into under 3GB of space some things had to go. Like help. Can anyone tell me what that link there says or how I might fix this?

A:Write Caching

You could try to update the mainboard bios if there's a new version available. It won't definitely fix it to be able, but there is a decent chance. Also, the controller drivers should be updated to latest, if they are not already.

Guys, hoping someone can help me out...

I'm experiencing a problem when I'm browsing, in that there are Mbs & Mbs being dumped into my temporary folders.

I normally use IE8, but have also used Google Chrome and they both react in the same manner.

Approx 10 mins of browsing, plus a round of Tiger Woods Online can see as much as 150 Mbs be left in either the Temporary Internet Folder or Internet Cache (depending on the Browser used).

I have to run CCleaner on a regular basis, to stop slowdown due to this.

Has anyne else seen this, or can anyone assist in rectifying?

Thanks in advance.

A:Caching Issue

There is an Advanced>>Security option under IE Tools>>Internet Options to Empty the Temporary Internet Files folder when closing the browser. Alternatively, you can reduce the space allocation for the folder under General>>Browsing History>>Settings.

With explorer. Copy a large, say 700mb file from folder a to b on a regular HDD, should take 10-15 secs right. If you watch resmon, disk activity, you will see write activity to the destination folder for almost a full minute afterwards. Anyone know what's going on here? I don't have restore (previous versions of files) enabled either.

Indexing perhaps?

I have been struggling with a malware changing my proxy settings to http://wpad.com.gr/proxy.pac.
This affects my system proxy settings in PC Settings - Networ - Proxy - Use Automatic Configuration Script (ON) - Acript Address http://wpad.com.gr/proxy.pac.
I have used TDSKill and it deleted a file "router.exe" from my windows folder. And Adware Cleaner removed some registry entries alongside some folder in Chrome that has something like "\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage\https_static.olark.com"
Then after resetting my settings and manually turning off Automatic Configuration Script in PC Settings, everything was fine and my google searches were back to 2015. A day later it changed, I scanned with Adware cleaner and it found same stuffs, I cleaned, And it;s back again.

Hi. My name is Brian, and I would be happy to look into your issue.
- General Instructions -
Please read all instructions and fixes thoroughly. Read the ENTIRE post BEFORE performing any steps so you understand all that needs to be done.
I would advise printing any instructions for easy reference as some of the fixes may require you to boot in Safe mode. Access to these instructions may not be available in Safe Mode.
Any fixes provided by myself are for this log file only and should not be used on any other systems.
Do not run any other removal software or perform updates other than the ones I provide, as it will complicate the cleaning process.
It's very likely that part of our cleanup will include emptying your recycle bin. If you use your recycle bin as an archive and do not wish this to be emptied, please let me know.
You have 4 days to reply to each post or the topic will be closed.
Please feel free to ask any questions, especially if you are having problems with my instructions.
- Save ALL Tools to your Desktop-
All tools that I have you download should be placed on the desktop unless otherwise stated. If you are familiar with how to save files to the desktop then you can skip this step.
Since you are continuing with this step then I assume you are unfamiliar with saving files to your desktop. As a result it's easiest if you configure your browser(s) to download any tools to the desktop by default. Please use the appropriate instructions below depen... Read more

This is the problem I have:

On Windows Vista Business machine.
I have created 4 identical CDs. They all have the same volume label.
I'm not sure about any possible serial number that I have heard people talk about.

I became uncertain about whether they had all been created properly and decided to check them one at a time in the same drive.
After doing a file comparison of the 1st CD against the same set of files on the hard drive, I put the 2nd CD in the drive and did the same file comparison.
Instead of it taking a couple of minutes, it took about 10 seconds, which makes me think that Vista is caching the CD contents somewhere,
and when a CD with the same volume label is inserted it assumes it is the same CD and just uses the cached contents.
If I reboot the machine and try the 2nd CD again, the file comparison takes about 2 minutes again, which you would expect, since rebooting is going to clear the cache.

Although Googling this gave me a couple of people with the same problem I can't find any info on the caching, and in particular, on how to turn it off.
I don't think this has anything to do with the "Write Caching" which I did find in the DVD drive properties.
Does anyone know how to turn this caching off?

Many thanks in advance....

Hi there everyone -

My situation's this: got a computer loading roaming profile, server is running Win2K.

As I log off on the computer, this is the error message:

EVENT ID: 1525
DATE: 7/6/2005
TIME: 10:43:40AM
Windows has detected that offline caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.

For more information, see Hlep and Support Center at

So I went to the MS Support site and found this link:

BUT it doesn't solve my problem, because I don't have a share on a separate server, as the solution instructed.

Where is your roaming profile coming from if not the server?

If your saying its on the server but is not shared then I would suggest to make it shared as it should be (not sure how its working if its not) and then go in to the caching and disable it.

Scenario: I am trying to hook my laptop up through a VPN so that I can work from out of my office. I start my computer and the login screen pops up. In the past, i was able to just use my domain password to get into windows, then connect via VPN so i could get my outlook email and browse my company's network. Now, just today, when i start my computer and try to log into windows, it says my password is invalid and i should contact my system admin. Is this a problem with the way win xp caches the profile? Maybe there is a time limit that xp will keep a profile cached?
I have to dial-up using the VPN, so, the password isnt looking at the domain because my laptop isn't connected to anything until i pull up the vpn.

Please help.

PS= I am the network admin!!!!!!!

A:VPN connection/caching profile??

Usually I only see this on newly built PC's or PC's that you have not logged onto for the first time.

From time to time I have seen this occur even on windows NT machines but have never seen "why".

Do you run your VPN as a service? If so have you thoughts about trying to log onto your PC as Adnmin to the PC VPNing in and then logging on as your Domain user ID and password.

the superfetch feature has seemed to stop caching as much...

ive had fresh install of vista ultimate for 2-3 weeks now and Superfetch was filling the 1.5Gb spare RAM with cache data (as it does) , now its seemed to have stopped even though the service is still running...

right now its saying 450Mb cached and 900Mb free ???

Now i was testing it on and off when i first installed Vista to see what the fuss was about and most of the time when it was OFF it would still cache to about the same figures as above but most of the time it would end up filling all 1.5Gb cache (yes even when off)... NOW its been on 2 weeks running and filling up the cache quicker than normal (as its learning) but then from yesterday its stopped filling it right up??? why is this???

I did install Firefox Pre-Loader and have uninstalled it due to problems with firefox actually NOT opening - I doubt that would have affected it

On another thread I had stated that there will be a performance hit if you turn off write caching for a SSD. But on second thought, I am not so sure any more.

What write caching allows (in my understanding) is to accumulate records in a buffer so that so that they can be written to the disk in one big swoop. That is an advantage on a spinning disk because all those records are written during the same rotation - and there is also only one seek for the arm.

I wonder though whether that brings the same advantage to the SSD where access time to any place is the same - and it is usually only 0.1ms. There would be an advantage if the records were written in larger blocks from the buffer because the SSD's write performance grows as the block size grows. But if records are still being written e.g. 4K at a time, there may not be an advantage.

Does anybody know whether the blocksize for the write operations increases with caching?

A:For the write caching experts

Hi whs - I see your point about the "write caching" and the SSD. Actually I think SSD's do write smaller blocks of data even faster than large sequential blocks so you could very well be right.

It would be interesting to run a series of tests with the "write caching" turned both on and off- Checking the Windows Disk WEI and checking the results of some of the disk benchmarking utilities (like HD Tune and ATTO).

At the moment I have my "write caching" turned on.

I have a dell laptop that will not clear the cache for browsing websites. The problem is that when I look at one of my own websites online, update the html page and then uploaded, refresh the page in internet explorer, the page doesn't refresh. No matter what! Clearing internet files, history and cookies. Rebooting... nothing works. (using xp and ie 6.0)

Any ideas of what to start looking for?
