Temporary black screen (un)plugging charger

Q: Temporary black screen (un)plugging charger

First of all, thank you very much for all your previous help. I'm back with more difficulties.
My laptop (HP Envy dv7) recently forced a Windows 8.1 update. Ever since, whenever I plug or unplug the charger, the screen goes black for a second or two. Troubleshooting didn't fix it? Help is much appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Temporary black screen (un)plugging charger

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

That means your display driver is not usable for windows 8 and windows 8.1. I would advise you to download and install Windows 7 display driver in compatibility mode and review if it helps.
There are few steps to set up window 7 display driver
Install & download display driver
Right click on the driver & go the properties
Select compatibility’ tab and test the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and click Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.
Finally click on button ”apply” then “ok” and run the file to install it

Plugging in or taking out my charger turns my screen black for a second before it flahes on again. I never really heard of a laptop doing this before so is this normal on the X1E model? Anyone else experience this?

As mentioned in the title, I'm receiving a black screen after plugging in my XFX 8800GT card.
- The monitor's working because I can use it normally with integrated gfx.
- my current specs are:
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz
PSU: CoolerMaster GX650W, 44A on a single 12V rail
I've taken the card back for testing at the XFX support counter before and it was shown to be working then. Could it be a hardware limitation of some sort I'm running into?
I have previously using Driver Cleaner Pro to clean nVidia, nVidia WDM and S3 drivers from my desktop.

Anyone have any ideas? Do I need to provide any other information?

Thanks and Regards

A:Black screen after plugging in XFX 8800GT

Start from scratch and do a complete re-install.
Otherwise don't mess with it too much, as you may have to send it back for a replacement, and you do not want to make any changes that void the warranty.
I would test it in another computer if you have the opportunity.

Hi everyone!

Recently I bought a new Full HD TV, it's a Samsung LE40B530. I'm trying to get this TV connected to my Compaq Presario CQ50-100ED laptop from hdmi output to the hdmi input on the TV. The videocard is a GForce 8200M. The latest drivers are installed.

The problem is that when I connect the two, the laptop screen goed black and the TV says 'No signal.' Pressing the FN F4 does not work. Also I'm not able to get back into vista on the laptop. The screen stays black even after unplugging the HDMI cable. I have to hold the power button to switch the laptop off. Not a good thing.

Any tips or advice?

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place...

I have my PC wired up to my TV via HDMI and every so often (usually 2 or 3 times an hour) the screen will black out for a second and then come right back again. I thought initially it may be a faulty lead but it's not. I've recently done a completely fresh instal Of Windows 7l also thinking that may resolve it but no.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Temporary screen black out

I'd wonder if maybe all the power saving settings need to be adjusted such as when the screen blanks out, screensaver is supposed to click in, etc. Hibernation and Sleep modes can cause issues. Basically, when watching TV or movies from a computer one doesn't want any type of interference with the process.

I'm a student and the next quad will be starting soon. My computer (HP Pavilion Dv4) Has recently started acting weird after log in. It will show a completely black background, showing only the cursor and occasionally the task bar is displayed as well. After between 1(cold start) - 5(warm start) minutes of showing the screen, the computer will spontaneously show the desktop and immediately runs like it should.

Initially I suspected the start-up and registry. So I installed CCleaner and Uninstalled all unused or unrecognized programs, then I Cleaned up my start up menu from the "Windows" tab to the "Scheduled Tasks" tab. After that I ran the Cleaner and Fixed all issues in the registry. Still didn't fix it. Even if it was a crowded start up it shouldn't bog down my machine this much considering my 32 GB SSD Start up Cache.

In the past I did have a problem with BIOS. Apparently my NVIDIA GeForce 630M GPU wasn't being seen by my system. I did try to do a system recover since it was fairly new and the loss of files wasn't a huge deal at the time. It happened again after that so I resolved the problem by folding back on my BIOS.

Now I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe the cause of it, BUT now I have important programs, files, and data on my machine. On-top of all this, the extra 1 GB of Dedicated RAM my GPU provides to my computer allows all the processing power my i5 provides to go concentrate on my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and OS.... Hi I've been using my X220i for the last 3 years or so and decided to upgrade to an i7 X230 a few days ago. After a few days of no problems, using the same charger I've been using on my X220 (the 90w slim travel charger) I plugged it in to charge while the laptop was powered on. The laptop powered off instantly and now it will not power on again. There are no status lights visible and nothing happens when I plug it in. I have done all the steps of removing the battery and pressing the power button etc and on putting the battery back in the fingerprint sensor light was flickering orange - it is now back to no signs of life at all again other than the left side of the palmrest gets hot when I insert the battery. I am strongly suspecting a fault with the charger fried the motherboard when I plugged it in but am wondering if anyone else has any suggestions before i try to make a claim within my remaining 1 week of warranty. Thnaks

The issue I am having with my laptop is that whenever the charger is plugged in or out, the screen goes black/blank then comes back on. This is known to happen when a hdmi cable is plugged in, but is not supposed to happen when the charger is plugged in. I only started experiencing this problem since today and I am wonder if it is because i had started to display by screen on a tv via a hdmi cable. normally when i do this, i set the screen settings to second screen only, and when I am done, I revert to duplicate screen, then i remove the hdmi cable. I am worried that I have done something wrong. I already removed the battery and put it back in, but I am still experiencing the problem. Can someone please elp me out, thank you.

The past few days, my laptop has been freezing after about 20 minutes (lately the amount of time has been decreasing to now about 15 minutes). First it would only freeze if it went idle but now it's freezing randomly. It would only freeze when I plug in my charger.

I replaced my adapter to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I also tried changing my set up so that my computer wouldn't sleep but still, it would freeze. I also launched CCleaner to try and clean up my registry and though it did fix up some problems, yes once again, my laptop would freeze.

I installed several anti-virus/malware programs as well but none of them seemed to work. They wouldn't detect anything through quick scan but once I try full scan, it would freeze. I tried going into safe mode, but before making it in, my laptop would stop and go into regular mode. And just a few minutes ago, I got the blue screen of death.

Please help!

Hi there. So, I'm watching my show on Hulu and I have my laptop plugged into the charger. Well, my cat decided it would be a great idea to jump onto the laptop charger cord, thus disconnnecting the cord from the box part of the cord. So I plug back in the two pieces and my screen is black. I turn up my brightness, nothing. I turn down my brightness, just to see if it would reset itself, still nothing. I unplugged the charger from the laptop and the screen comes back and now, my brightness buttons do the opposite of what they say they do, like the turn up brightness button, turns down my brightness, and vice versa. And everytime I plug in my charger, my screen fades to black. Do I need to buy a new charger or what? Can someone answer my question, please? Thank you!!  Elise92

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with a method to enable sounds for when you plug in or remove a charger connected to your laptop. It is not a problem with my pc, but is an option that is not available for me which i would like to install to let me know if i accidentally unplugged the charger, particularly if I'm working on a full-screen feature. Any help would be appreciated.

A:How to enable sound when plugging/unplugging charger for laptop.

In the System Sounds, there is an option for device connect or disconnect. This will probably do what you want. You will have to assign a sound for those functions.

The System Sounds panel can be accessed from Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sounds. Click on "Change System Sounds".

Hi, my new Acer V Nitro laptop makes a short, beep tone (coming from the speakers) when I plug and unplug the charger. I have read online that it is due to the driver and/or BIOS and I have done everything to disable it (installing new driver, searching for options in sound menu of Windows, going into the BIOS settings...). Finally, I have found the solution: deactivating the autostart of Realtek Audio driver on Windows start. Do you think that it is normal to hear this tone? I have completely reinstalled Windows and the tone finally reappeared (only after installing all updates). Thanks,

Whenever I plug in the charger the screen blinks black for a second, but goes back to normal afterward, and lags the computer for a few seconds (i figured that because my music or videos skips on WMP). Just noticed this whenever I plug or unplug the charger. The laptop lags for 1-2 seconds before returning to normal. This is noticeable when playing games or watching videos. Haven't seen any abnormal drops or spikes with the temperature of the CPU, GPU and HDD which would suggest a hardware issue. Tried doing this while running 3DBenchmark, and there is a huge drop in FPS, from 130-200fps down to almost 16fps esp. when unplugging the charger. Is this normal?

My wife has been using her massive laptop like a desktop for a while now but when she started it up this morning the screen of the external LCD was black as well as the screen of her laptop. When the external LCD is unplugged the built in one starts working fine. After some troubleshooting, it got to the point that when it was plugged in the wallpaper would expand but I couldn't see icons or the cursor until it is unplugged again.

It is posable that the windows updates she did last night is responsible.

I've updated every driver I could and ran through the many different ways to change it from just a single screen with no change other than having the resolution on the built-in changed.

A:Plugging in VGA causes both screens to go black.

Does the external screen work when connect to another source?
It sounds like the external screen was set as the primary screen, so what was displayed there is mirrored on the laptops screen.
Am I correct in thinking it now shows a display but expanded?
You should be able to drag from one screen to the other, does this change the icons, cursor etc to the correct size?

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.
2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.
3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?
5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.

A:Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

I?ve installed Windows 7 on a computer and am testing to determine how best to set-up the machine for my particular use.

Every now and again, say once or three time an hour, apparently no matter what I?m doing, the screen goes black for a short time (at least up to 5 seconds), then everything seems normal again. I found many complaints about black screens on line but they all seem to be a different situation.

I was told by an acquaintance who has long used Win 7 that this is normal for everyone using Vista or Win 7, it is a feature of basic Windows security and can only be overcome by deactivating UAC so as to be running in ?root? mode. That seems too nonfunctional and inconvenient to be true but ...?? is it? What is going on? If I?m recording a live performance, is there going to be 5 seconds or so missing every little bit?

A:temporary black screens

Two things can be happening here and I'll try to explain them the best I can.

1. On lower-performing computers, UAC will try to prompt when an app loads and darkens the screen (partially, not completely) to present and focus the prompt on you. Sometimes the prompt never shows but the screen should never be going completely black.

2. Your graphics driver could be crashing and recovering. Please check your Windows event log (Under Windows > System) by typing "eventvwr.msc" in the search box of the Start Menu. Look for anything worse than INFORMATION around the time this happens. Typically, however, Windows is supposed to give you a pop-up in the bottom right corner of your screen saying the graphics driver crashed and recovered. It wouldn't hurt to make sure your graphics drivers are updated. Please post your specs so we can assist you with that if needed.

Running Win 10 on a HP Envy and upon startup everything normal, then icons appear on desktop, then a 5 inch black square in upper right of screen and this hangs for about thirty seconds then disappears and everything is fine. This does not occur on restart. At the top of black box is the following C:\programdata\242466\sysmon.exe How do I get rid of this delay....thanks Sammy

A:Temporary black box shows on startup

Hi, a quick search for sysmon.exe which I assume you've done suggests it could be related to a variety of things from LiUtilities to a trojan. (I.e. legitimate to bad).

Do you have or have you had the Torch browser installed?

If you have a good AV installed, assume it's been scanned and hopefully is not bad.
Suggest you go to C:\programdata\242466\ and rt click and examine the properties of sysmon.exe which might help to identify it.

Given that, you can use (e.g.) Sysinternals Autoruns (free, run as admin) and see if you can find sysmon.exe as a startup. Download Autoruns, install, run as admin, wait for it to load data, use Autoruns find.

If sysmon.exe is not found, it is presumably launched by sthg else.

Try a clean boot. If the box does not appear, enable more startups until it does. That way you may be able to identify what is launching it.

Idea for removal: Get Revo Uninstaller, use Force uninstall, and browse to Sysmon.exe. See what Revo shows in the list of what may be uninstalled. Read carefully, act with caution, and then decide whether to accept Revo's recommendations.

The last few days, when I boot up, after the Welcome window there a black screen where the wallpaper is. I can see the Taskbar, though (see screenshot). It stays that way for a few seconds, then  I see the normal desktop. Is this anything to be concerned about? If it is and is going to involve a complicated procedure, I can live with it. Just wanted to know what might be going on.

A:Temporary Black Desktop (except for Taskbar)

This is nothing to be concerned about.  Sometimes there's a slight delay in loading Windows - it'd be a concern if Windows wasn't loading but in your case since it does after a few seconds I wouldn't worry about it.
As an attempt at prevention there's some minor housecleaning stuff you can do, but really your PC is fine.

The same thing happened when I plugged in a different usb stick, but the usb mouse and webcam work fine.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

A:Blue Screen when plugging in USB

First: Did this problem just occur? (If so I suggest try a system restore using a restore point when the usb drive wasn't causing a crash) Second: Try to update your PCI drivers from your computer's manuf. website.

If updating the drivers does not resolve this issue Go to Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Then uninstall all Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Restart the PC and Plug in the USB device and Scan For hardware Changes.
Let me know if this helps.

I have a Sony Vaio that runs Vista 64. Today I tried to plug in a USB printer and got the Blue Screen crash dump. I then tried pluggin in a USB mouse in the same port and got the same thing. I tried different USB ports with both, and still got the blue screen. Just yesterday I used the printer and mouse on this computer with no issues. Help!!!

A:Blue Screen when plugging in USB device

You may be a victim of this update; if you have it just uninstall it >>

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to c:\windows\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder. *this assumes 'c' is your boot drive, if it is not, subsitute accordingly
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

This might point us to a non Microsoft driver causing the error, if one exists for it.

If you do not see any minidumps, be sure you are not using any cache cleaner such as CCleaner. Also run sysdm.cpl and select Advanced > Startup and Recovery. Make sure "small memory dump" is the one chosen under "write debugging information" and the location should be %systemroot%\minidump

The black plug tip on my still in warranty XPS 15 9530 bends!  Is this plug tip not warranted?
The problem is that depending on how the plug tip must be "bent" (not bent in the laptop - - the black plug tip itself needs to be bent just so) for the laptop to charge.
I called Dell support with my Service Tag Number and was told this was CUSTOMER DAMAGE.  I asked for the reference number for my call but both the support representative (Don) and their manager (Nicky) said there was no reference number and I had to buy a new charger.
Really?  This plug is a flimsy design and the laptop is only used in my home office - - it has never gone on a trip and I have over 2 million miles on American Airlines as a consultant.  I have had IBM laptops for years and I have never had this kind of problem.
What really got my goat was when the manager HUNG UP ON ME after telling me that I "should have read the T&Cs and I had 21 days to report a problem".
Really?  I bought this top of the line laptop for its features and quality.  I use it for personal use and designing/programming Android mapping/routing applications for fun at home.
Astounded first time Dell customer.

A:Flimsy Dell XPS 15 9530 black charger plug tip - - not warranted?

Woke up one morning and noticed my laptop cable/plug bent on its own. No I didnt drop it or anything. The laptop was on my night stand with the cable plug landing on the edge of the stand (so hanging off the side). Never has this had an impact on any past laptop. The entire end that inserts into the laptop just bent! I think it could be the weight of the plug or something, not sure but this is horrible as the laptop isnt even 2 months old!... I've started searching if this is a common issue on these laptops. This is the first post I've found. THIS appears to be a hardware fault by Dell. i wasn't happy with the customer service during the initial ordering process but enjoyed the laptop up until now. I'm truly looking at NOT EVER recommending or purchasing another Dell and I've been a Dell customer for 20yrs easy.

I have tried installing two different webcams (both A4) and on both occasions, a blue screen appears after either plugging in the webcam or starting the image capture program (while webcam is plugged in). The first webcam used to work fine on this machine, so I am not sure what could have changed in the interim.

A:plugging in webcam results in blue screen

It's more than likely the driver the webcam is using that is causing your computer to crash.

Have you tried to see if the manufacturer has provided an updated driver?

Hey guys,

I have a Gigabyte laptop P25 upgraded to Windows 10. (GTX 770M)
I have a problem only after upgraded to Windows 10. When I go to plug in a display through the HDMI port, the screen flashes for a bit, then the blue screen: "video_dxgkrnl_fatal_error" . When it restarts, it can't load in system when the HDMI still in. So I need to remove the HDMI then restart it again. What does this error mean and does anyone know of a solution to the problem / had similar experience?

A:Blue Screen When Plugging in HDMI - video_dxgkrnl_fatal_error

Looks like a problem with your Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M card/driver:

BugCheck 113, {19, 2, 10de, 11e0}
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for nvlddmkm.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for nvlddmkm.sys

You have a fairly old driver, 353.75 dated 8/2/2015. The current driver for your card is 368.81 dated 07/14/2016.
Please download it from here: Drivers | GeForce

Then use DDU to completely uninstall the current driver then install 368.81 version.

Edit: Also, looks like you system is slightly underclocked. Check BIOS setup settings:

CPUID: "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz"
MaxSpeed: 2400
CurrentSpeed: 2394

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I have an Acer Aspire E15 laptop, I've been using it with Windows 8.1 until I did a clean install of Windows 10 recently. Normally, when I get the warning notice that I have 10% power left, I plug in the power cord and continue work.  But now when I plug the cord in, it turns off the screen (goes black). I still get audio but no video. If I unplug the cord, the screen comes back. What's going on? I've never had this issue with Win 8.1 or any other OS version before.

A:Plugging in power cord turns off screen in Windows...

Check your power saving settings (Search for Power Options, then change the plan settings) and make sure the 'turn screen off' option isn't set somwhere weird when running on AC. Also make sure the brightness isn't set to zero.

Whenever I plug in the supplied USB-C AC adapter to charge the laptop I get a black screen flicker for about a second. Is there a way to prevent this? It's not a really big deal its just something that never happened on previous ThinkPad models I've owned (T570, T460s)

Hello I just purchased my lenovo x280 and have noticed whenever I plug or unplug the power the display flickers and goes black for less than a second then resumes like normal, this happens every time I plug or unplug the device. I saw similar posts about this being because it changes the refresh rate on a different laptop but I haven't been able to find the setting to turn it off
