Audio files don't play but other sounds do...

Q: Audio files don't play but other sounds do...

I'm running windows 7 ultimate on an acer aspire 3050.

System sounds play fine, sound from my internet browser plays fine, but any audio file I try to play doesn't work, any video I play has no audio.
I've tried playing different files with different players (Windows media player, media player classic, divx player, quicktime player, vlc player)
Audio and video files start up in WMP and then an error pops up "windows media player encountered a problem" all other players will play the file but no sound is produced.

I need help here, I've tried everything from system restore, reinstalling the players, downloading new audio files to test, to reinstalling my audio driver.

I'm out of ideas here

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Designation7,

Welcome to the forums. Have you installed a codec pack? I can recommend Shark007's as one of the best around
Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs

If you have already installed one, there could be a problem with it, so try Sharks.

Good Luck

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows 7 (from vista) on my HP Pavillion dv9000 series (specifically dv9850ea)

Beforehand when I ran the upgrade advisor, I got a few warning about incompatabilities - the graphics card for example - but all seems fine after the upgrade.

My problem is with the audio - system sounds work fine, audio from youtube for example, works fine... but when I play divx videos (still need to test other formats) there is no audio with either media player or divx player. Also when I play a song on itunes, it will just hang on 00:00 and go no further.

I know its not a driver issue, as some sounds ARE working... but im stumped!

help!

It is probably one of a few things. a driver or codec, or configuration issue.
Just because sound works on some formats doesnt necessarily rule out a driver so I would check in device manager.

Codec--You may need one to plat the respective format, or you may have two codecs conflicting.

Config--something is configured incorrectly like a control panel

Can anyone help me!?!?!? I have an hp pavillion 750c with XP Pro. My system sounds are not playing. I can play audio with Winamp with no problem but when I check the properties for Sounds and Audio Devices it says there are no audio devices, playback devices, etc. I have rolled back, uninstalled and updated drivers (not necessarily in that order) and have had no luck......Today all system sounds came back after a System Restore but were gone again after the next time I started up. What is going on here!?!?!The audio driver is Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller

Okay, so this problem has been bugging me for a couple of weeks now. My computer will not play any sounds through the speakers unless it is through a media player and the file is on my computer. I have a Realtek AC97 sound driver. I know that my speakers are fine because my Xbox 360 is hooked up to them and they play perfectly.

I have even done an XP repair install, this has not helped either. Sometimes, when a sound needs to be played, the speakers make a bumping crack (if you know what I mean ). When I play a game on my computer, they just make a constant crackle. It is as if they want to play an instrument but don't have a music book.

I tried downloading that codec pack (forgot the name, but it's popular). I have tried fully uninstalling all my sound drivers and stuff and then reinstalling from manufacturer's website. I have tried all the suggestions out there about editing the registry and stuff, they haven't done anything either.

I did get it back from the pc shop recently because they replaced the hard drive with a new 500gb one and the sound did not work from the moment I turned it on. I would like to avoid having to spend more money there and instead see if this is something I can fix with a mouse and keyboard?

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help.

I have an unusual problem: my Audio Output Devices are all sorts of confused. I can't change the default device, nor disable/enable any devices, and no sound comes out.

My notification tray shows there are No speakers of headphones plugged in.

Sometimes it says No Audio Output Device Is Installed.

If I click on it, it tries to fix it, but ends up showing the Audio device is disabled (Not Fixed):

When I open up Playback Devices, it is not disabled.

There is nothing under the Levels tab anymore

I have all devices shown.
At this point, I cannot change the default device nor disable certain devices, even though the options are not greyed out & I can select them. Selecting the actions just does nothing.

I don't think it's a hardware issue, because the audio devices change when I plug in the HDMI cable. It still plays no audio over it, but it switches the default device to the HDMI device.

I still cannot enable/disable, nor set default devices. Selecting the actions just does nothing.

Here is my Device Manager content:

I've reinstalled the devices using the drivers from my device manufacturer. I've heard that the HDMI graphics cards can interfere with the audio devices, and to that end I have uninstalled & deleted the drivers for both graphics devices & both audio devices. I've also used Driver Sweeper to remove the graphics devices.

This, coupled with the odd behavior of not being able to enable/disable/set default device... Read more

I installed the XVid player for Windows XP Home the other day and it hung during installation so I had to restart my computer. All of a sudden I don't have any more system sounds and I can't play .wav or .midi files. I tried doing a system restore, but of course none of my restore points allow me to roll my computer back to that date. Then I tried troubleshooting it through Windows Support...no go. I removed and reinstalled my sound card and drivers (Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live!) and installed all the codecs I could find, still no dice. Here's the kicker...I can play MP3s through WinAmp and video with sound through Windows Media Player, but I can't play .wav files or .midi files. Whenever I go into Sounds and Audio Devices and highlight an event sound, the play button remains dimmed. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this issue short of formatting my HD and reinstalling Windows, I would be very appreciative.

Losing patience quickly,

-Eric

Hello!
Windows do not play any media files and more but I can hear the sound effects windows play (Critical Alarm, Windows Start-up, Windows Shut-down, ding, beep etc..) and also I can hear any sound/music, etc from Firefox browser.
I can also hear any music/sounds etc from games
the only problem I have is the media files.

Windows Media Player won't play any media file I throw at it the same problem happens with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (codecs are optional)
this has happened after I followed these guides:
Remove Favorites, Libraries, and Homegroup from Navigation Pane
Computer - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

I clearly wanted and I still want to hide some items from navigation pane.
If you use it much some items are not needed and are bothersome if you have them.

So I hid Libraries and done everything as it says to remove Homegroup.

So what I have to in order for Media Players play media properly once again?

Except of Restoring everything as it was.

A:Windows do not play any Media Files (you can hear sounds though..)

1. Go to device manager, find the audio device, and make sure it's enabled.

2. Update your on-board audio device.

3. Click on Start and type SOUND. Click the tab PLAYBACK. Right click to show Disabled and Disconnected devices. Make sure your speaker is Enabled. Right click on speaker and run Test. Should hear up and down notes. Double click on your speaker to bring up Speaker Properties. Go to tab Levels and make sure nothing is muted.

Ok so I have a simple, but annoying problem. I have no Windows Sound Events like the login sound, the logout sound, and when the battery is low. Every other sound like playing music and running YouTube videos work fine. Even when I turn on my laptop I hear the whole computer startup sound, but I don't hear the login one. I don't understand the problem. I went into personilazation and went to Windows Sounds, but when I select one and click "Play" I don't hear anything. I tried the other Sound Themes and they don't work either. I ran the Fix It program for Audio, and it didn't find anything wrong.

On Windows Vista Home Ultimate:

Just a couple of days ago, I discovered that my computer will not play any audio files (.wav, .mp3, .m4a, etc.) in any of my media player programs (iTunes, QuickTime, Windows Media Player, etc.). The files are not "broken" because I can open them in Adobe Audition (audio editor). They simply won't play. If I try Windows Media, I get this message:

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

It then takes me to Microsoft's website, where I am told that I have "encountered error message C00D11D2." http://www.microsoft.com/windows/wi...&id=C00D11D2&contextid=87&originalid=80070005

Is there anyone on here who might be able to help me get my music back to working? Thanks!

HELP! I can't play some audio files! I already made sure I have the latest drivers and such, but they still won't play!

I had this problem ever since I re-formatted yesterday, before re-formatting, I could play them just fine and I hadn't even installed any codecs or special drivers!

I think the codec is acm according to here:

Questions & Answers

(Cause they won't play there either)

On that page, it tells me this:

Quote:
Q: Any of the *.wav files fail to load, but all the *.SS2 presets load fine.

A: For some reason, some people have all their Windows sound ACM codecs disabled. FL Studio needs them in order to translate compressed *.wav files to PCM. Under Windows, follow Start > Settings > Control Panel > Multimedia > Devices tab > Audio Compression Codecs. For each of the listed codecs, click Properties, then check "Use this audio codec" (if it's disabled).

How can I do what it says in Windows 7

I first saw the problem in FL studio, so i tried to play one of the mentioned wav files in windows media player, and it said it could not play. I also tried VLC media player.

Thanks

I burned a CD with ITunes with like 15 songs. They played good on the computer, but when I went to play it in my car.. It said error. I arrived at work and now it plays in the work computer! Turns out my itunes put all the files on the CD as CDA files instead of MP3s. Now that the CD is already burned.. is there a way to reformat the CD I have to MP3 so that it can play in my car.. or will I have to restart the process..
OR can I like take these CDA files and save them to the computer i have at work, completely erase all from the CD and restart with somehow reburning them as MP3s?
And how do I prevent this from happening again.. why would my itunes even do CDA instead of MP3 like.. wtffff

My drive home is long.. so I want this CD working! LOL

A:CDA Audio Files, CD wont play :(

Are you trying to make a regular audio CD or a MP3 CD.Standard CDs are not MP3 format.Only a CD-RW is erasable / reusable. A CD-R is a one time write process with no erase.Compact Disc Audio trackhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Disc_Audio_trackA CD Audio Track or .cda file is a small (44 bytes) file generated by Microsoft Windows for each track on an audio CD (it is a virtual file that can be read by Windows software, but is not actually present on the CD audio media). The file contains indexing information that programs can use to play or rip the disc. The file is given a name in the format Track##.cda.So it sounds as if Itunes created a standard audio disk. If you buy a cd at the store does your car play that?Good LuckRoger

A year ago i received a Dell 1520 laptop, real good system, most the bells and whistles. worked great, played games and movies like a champ. stopped using it because i'm at the air force academy now and we have to use the issued laptops. i gave it to my girlfriend for Christmas, did a file transfer, got most the stuff over. no issues so far. started setting up itunes. the music it found on the comp played fine. now her's where the problem starts. she had more music on another comp, so i started working to transfer that over. moved the files, imported them, thought everything was good (i didn't check because i wanted to go do something else). the next day she tells me the music won't play. sure enough i went over and started playing with it and it wouldn't. i tried playing the songs i moved over and ones that were already there and the tracker that tells where you are in the song wouldn't even move. trying to isolate the problem i'm tried an mp3 on windows media player, it told me it couldn't play it. tried a wma, same thing. tried a different player, no dice. went to youtube, plays the video no audio. tried reinstalling the audio codec, nothing. searched for updates to the sound card and couldn't find anything... and then i had to leave, so i'm trying to solve this problem long distance adding to the fun. the computer is runnin... Hello, I don't know where to put this, it may be a Vista thing or a Sound card thing, I honestly have no clue. I come here because nothing like this has ever happened on my XP machine.

My machine having problems is a HP laptop running Vista, I'm not sure when it began, but as of at least a week or so ago I am not able to play video files or audio files. Types of video files I've tried include .wmv .mpg. I know I have been able to play audio files from this computer in the past, I ripped some CD's to it and listened through them on the computer several times. Those same tracks no longer play for me. I've tried Windows Media Player and Winamp, neither program works. When I try Winamp nothing happens at all. When I use WMP, I get this Message:

"Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help."

clicking web help takes me to This page

Because of that I thought the problem may be with my sound card.
I followed the instructions on that page, The Device Manager lists Conexant High Definition Audio as my sound controller, and it is working properly. I uninstalled the driver on that, and reinstalled it, the computer looked for the driver online and downloaded and installed it, so I am assuming it is the correct driver. The device appears to be working fine. The driver that device is currently using is ver. 4.15.0.50.

I Downloaded and Installed a so called "Vista codec Pack"... Read more

Integrated cards usually lack the ability to do a lot... however there are sound cards out there, where you can set something up like that. I found a great one at comp usa, gives a nice boom. And you would just connect the wires to and fro, I don't know if a wireless conection is possible... but I would be the last to say never. Though for now, i'd say your best bet is either audigy, or probably not going to happen...

So, I know it's probably something really simple but I've attempted everything within my limited knowledge and I just have no idea. My audio files play as if they've all been rerecorded by clowns on helium. Way too fast.

Surprisingly this is actually an improvement on the Crash Test Dummies. ;)

My sound card is built in with the motherboard and I have an extra sound card but I'm not sure if installing it would have any effect. I suspect it's the driver but then again (despite having looked it up three times) I'm still not exactly sure how drivers work. I also don't know what I should be installing or if maybe it's just a setting that I have to tweak. It's universal (all my media players do the same thing and I've fiddled with the settings on all of them as well, and I know RealPlayer has a specific setting for just this sort of problem and even that didn't work). I have RealPlayer, WinAmp, iTunes, QuickTime, DivX, and Windows Media Player. My OS is Windows 2000.

I...can't think of anything else. Does that cover it? Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Audio/video Files Play Too Fast

Does the music actually play faster i.e. 3 min song plays in 1 min? or its just higher pitched?I'd be looking for audio-software sound effects which have been turned on by mistake, but I think your aware of this stuff from your post here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...=0&#entry220138Go to Control Panel.Double click the 'System' icon.Click the Hardware tab.Click the Device Manager button. You will see a list of hardware devices recognised by your system.Do any of them have a red or yellow symbol after the name?If so look at the properties of the device indicated (by double clicking on it).If you have the motherboard driver CD handy or have downloaded the latest (Win2000) drivers for the mobo then look under "Sound, video and game controllers" in Device Manager and uninstall the driver for the 'xyz AC97 Audio' press apply or OK to exit and reboot. Windows should redetect the sound 'card' and you can install the drivers. See if that helps.P.S. Get rid of Real Player, you can still play the files with Real Alternative, download here:http://www.free-codecs.com/Real_Alternative_download.htmOr Media Player Classic can play Real and Quick time formats and most others too http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Vi...r-Win2kXP.shtml

resently, when i was trying to get Itunes to work(never mind about itunes, not the problem) i dud deeper into the problem and i gone through some regedit stuff at the RUN wich i was told to do if Itunes was gonna work and then my audio stopped working, my media files to but i can still play games (without audio). dont really know what to do but i hope you can help me. In that case thx

A:Audio not working, cant play files and when i try says:Server execution

Whatever you did to the registry caused the problems.

First suggestion is to use the System Restore and restore the PC back to a date when the sound worked correctly (ignoring any iTunes problems). That will probably fix it but, if that doesn't work, reinstall the Integrated sound drivers, from the motherboard vendor as these are the preferred drivers. Non vendor drivers and/or the generic Windows installed HD Audio Codec may not work or work correctly.

System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

Hello Community! Please help!

Ever since I had gotten rid of a virus, my computer just won't function properly. A whole lot of problems and weird occurrences like a red X on my internet connection, yet I can still use the internet. I also can't hear any sound whatsoever.
Upon trying to open files it just wouldn't open no matter how many times i clicked, or it would show me an error message to reboot my computer and believe me I tried.
I tried using system restore to get everything back to normal, and yet again, another error message. It says:

'System restore does not appear to functioning correctly on this system
A Volume Shadow Copy Service encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more information.'

I have been having this problem for about a couple of weeks now. I've been trying to just get the sound back at least but no luck there either.
I fear I might have to buy a new Windows 7 installation disk. I wanted to wait till windows 10 updated but i'm almost positive that this problem is going to prevent it from updating.

I believe my son's laptop is infected with malware. It has the folllowing hardware:
Dell Studio 1555
Core 2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.2HGz
4 GB RAM (task Manager reports 47% in use)
64-bit OS

The fan is constantly running to keep the laptop cool as if a power hungry program is running. He frequently complains of IE not responding. The laptop will also randomly not respond to the touchpad or hot keys. Lately random audio files (people talking) will play when the computer is ON but not in use.

Please help. In anticipation of your support I have downloaded toe following programs already:
Security Check
Combofix

First, thank you for taking your time to help me, much appreciated!

Sorry this info is limited but not sure what other info will be significant.

For the past 2-3 months maybe, my HP Laptop (Vista) plays random audio clips. This happens when I am using programs or doing nothing. I am always connected to the net via wireless so not sure if it happens when I am not connected.

The clips last anywhere from 2 seconds to one minute and usually sound like they are cut off in the middle when they stop. Sometimes, the clips are choppy sounding, as if there is not enough memory to play the audio clip. I have heard "Hi, this is Howie Mandel", last night I heard a minute long weight loss ad and this morning I heard a partial ad for the new "Stepbrothers" movie. In the past I believe I heard hip hop music clips as well.

When this happens I have used Task Manager to see what's running and nothing appears in the Applications tab and nothing unusual in the Processes tab (although I wouldn't know what to look for there anyhow). I usually keep my speakers on mute to prevent hearing these ads but we I am watching a movie or listening to news or music, these clips are as loud and I have to just stop what I am listening to and wait for these clips to end. Sometimes I hear none in a day and sometimes five or more.

I use Trend Micro and Windows Defender and no virus has been detected. I do download a lot, using Azereus and Limewire but other than that... Read more

I am guessing you need to install an AC3 audio codec
that you can probably get by installing ffdshow.
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
There is AC3 filter here if you don't want all those other codecs...

RealPlayer sucks, it has for years. To play FLV streaming, you need Adobe Flash Player. To play non-streaming from hard drive, use VLC instead of Real.

Real is not Flash.

Earlier I noticed random audio files were being played from my computer. At first I thought that they could be coming from a running program, but after shutting them all down the problem persisted. I am running Windows 7 and checked the volume mixer only to see the measurement of the sound coming from an unidentifiable source. The audio files are less than a minute long and range from advertisements of commercial products to songs. I recall one audio file that played a couple times sounding like a news story report talking about something related to someone being raped and rape prevention, I believe.

Usually there will be a period of several hours where nothing odd happens, only to have a short period of time where the files are played again every few minutes. The only other strange thing I have noticed is a period of "slowness" in my computer's speed every now and again, but that may or may not be related to the infection.

I ran Malwarebytes along with tdsskiller (with loaded modules being scanned) in safe mode only to find zero threats. I have also cleared my internet browsers' and Java's caches in the rare case that would solve things - it didn't.

Ive got a 32GB memory stick.
It has about 24GBs of video files on it currently.

However when i put any new video files from my laptop onto it, and then try opening the, my video player just wont play any of them!!

The video player opens, but instead of showing the video timer as 0.00/3.20mins (to show that is has 3.20mins of video in the file which it will play),
it just shows 0.00/0.00 as the timer, and wont load the video at all!!
The current video files i have on there all play fine, but any new files i put on in the exact same format just wont play!

And it also f**ks up the video file itself just by being put on there though!

As i have a video on my laptop which plays fine, i put it on the memory stick and it wont play, i transfer it back from the stick to my laptop but the file then still wont play, and so has been corrupted somehow just by being placed on the memory stick!
Can anyone please please help??

I am using the trial version of Audio Mid Recorder and when i record anything from like lets say, youtube or even from a radio station it comes out sounding very thin, as if it was recorded from a pair of head phones. All audio devices seem to be in working order.
ok, I just found out why it's sounding thin is because it was recording through the mic head set. Now I disabled the headset but still on the recorder the source device on the drop down option for recording device it is not listed.

A:Audio Mid Recorder audio sounds thin and fraily

I thought that this was disable to plug the analog hole, so that people could not record what they are hearing from their sound card...basically going around copy protection.

Tried:
