System (Z:) partition suddenly showing up on Win10 PCs

Q: System (Z:) partition suddenly showing up on Win10 PCs

I'm seeing reports in other forums about folks suddenly having a 256MB FAT32 SYSTEM (Z partition appearing on their PCs!

One person did mention they had used a VPN app (which might have created this), but none of the others have done anything like that.

Anyone have any ideas we can investigate??

Preferred Solution: System (Z:) partition suddenly showing up on Win10 PCs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Emptied Recycle Bin and Run Disk Cleanup but it liberated less than 200 MBytes!
Some long  time ago, somebody told me to delete files from some folder and after doing it I found again over 100GB free space. But completely forgot who has told me this and which folder I had to empty.

My disk contains 5 partitions:
part1 = ntfs-win10 free upgrade of win home premium (primary)
Part2 = ntfs-win7 home premium (primary)
Part3 = ext3-Extended (logical)
Part4 = ext3-LM rafaela (extended)
Part5 = swap (extended)
This setup worked good.

Part2 win7 got buggered, and reinstalled (nvidia chip-set melt down during win7 boot). The MB was replaced.

I can no longer get to win10 boot Part1. Booting to Part1 or Part2 results to booting the newly installed win7. Rafaela boot did not change: still working.

How can I reclaim my win10 boot? I can't upgrade for free anymore so I'm hoping there's a way to work with what's there.

The only time that I am aware that Windows randomly changes the accent colour is if you have "Automatically pick an accent colour from my background" turned on in Settings.

I wonder if a recent update has turned this on and you had not noticed?

Guys, hear me out...

VMware ESXi virtual machine. Installed Win10 Enterprise, went into audit mode, did my installs and whatnot. Shut down the machine. Copied that vm and ran sysprep, everything seems just fine and dandy. Activated Windows, put into domain. Used a domain admin account, logged in as domain user. Put in settings, blah, blah...

Until one day, vm starts up and user cannot log in remotely. I went to the console and logged in as domain admin. Screen goes all glitchy and sysprep window opens, just like in audit mode. Tinkered around a bit, but didn't have time to play with it too much. Restored a previous nights image and everything is fine.

Fast forward a few weeks. User cannot log in. I log in from console, everything seems ok. Remote desktop services won't start and there's nobody listening @3389. That's weird. All I can find is Event ID 34 with TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager. It's telling me, and I'm paraphrasing, "Remote Desktop Services cannot accept logins, because there is an installation in progress". It's really in Finnish and that's what I came up with. This is the exact same message that I can see when I run my original vm which is in audit mode.

I've looked into registry and I've looked into the setup state file; both are saying that the ImageState equals IMAGE_STATE_COMPLETE. However, the setup state file has a modified date and date from the evening before everything went weird.

So, I looked into Panther directory and I saw that s... Read more

A:Win10 Enterprise; suddenly in audit mode?

So. I found something. See below:

I cleared CmdLine, removed Respecialize and set the rest of them to 0. This is how these were on other machines made from the same image. After rebooting everything seems to be working again.

I'm still a bit concerned whether there's still something that would need to be set (you know, like what I did to those keys I mentioned earlier) related to sysprep, audit.exe or windeploy.exe. And I'm still worried this might happen again, because I've got no clue what caused this phenomenon.

I have two desktops and a NAS drive on my network. Both PC's are Win10. One Pro, the other Home. Everything was working beautifully then out of nowhere the Home machine just stopped accessing the public folder on the Pro machine saying it didn't have permission. I thought the Public folder didn't need permissions if it's shared with Everybody. But it will access and read the other non-public shares on the Pro machine. Weird The Pro machine, however, doesn't even see the Home machine on the network any more, although I can ping it. Again, weird. I had a mapped drive to the Home machine which is now broken. Both PC's can see and access the NAS drive. No settings were changed, nothing was touched, it just worked one minute and stopped the next. The Pro machine was just updated to Build 10586.3 on 11/13/15. But I don't think that caused it because everything worked until the 17th. All the network settings were correct and they have not been changed. I can't find anything about it on the internet except the typical "Make sure Network Discovery is on and file sharing is enabled." Yes, Network Discovery is on and file and printer sharing is enabled on both machines. Still no go. So I'm guessing I'm the only one with this problem. Lucky me. Anyone have any ideas?

I have been trying for a few days now to get Partition Magic 8 to partition my existing C: drive. First I was getting the "Error 983" error. Then I un-installed SP2 which was causing a gang of problems, freezing programs for a couple mins mostly. After I got it uninstalled I did a disk defrag, then a chkdsk /f. Now I have partitioned the drive using PM8 again and this time after the reboot it is telling me it is completed but once Windows XP reboots there is no new partition.

Im trying to install Suse Linux 9.0. But I really want to have 2 new partitions, one for Suse, and the other as a back up. Im not really sure how to solve this now so if any one could help I would really apprecate it.

If you could help me with this I would highly appreciate it!!!!

My touch screen stopped working in early October without myself doing any changes that I'm aware of. The Windows Anniversary update came at that time and might be involved. In the Device Manager, there is no touch screen under "Mice and other pointing devices". There is a "HID compatible touch screen" under HID, which I've tried to disable and to uninstall. It comes back after reboot, but still no function. It could of course be a hardware problem, but it's usually not.... /Andreas

Hi folks. Just wondering if someone here has come across this kind of problem before. I run 2 HDD, both are Maxtor 60gb, the Master holds Win 2000, Win XP Pro, and Redhat 7.3. The 2nd HDD holds 3 partitions, I use these for storage of various data - Multimedia, Webdev, MP3, ect. Here's the prob - On reboot earlier today, the 2nd HDD suddenly showed up as unformatted. I've booted into a couple different DOS based diag apps, and get the same result, that the partitions are unformatted, including Partition Magic. The 3 partitions are intact, just unformatted. Which, of course, renders the data useless, as I can't get to it. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. - Thank You. -Ed Parrott

I ran Kaspersky as my computer was way overdue for a full scan and it scanned a BullGuard file without any issues to report, but the thing is I've never used BullGuard, never downloaded it, never been anywhere near it. So I took a look in the folder it's nestled in - Windows > Applications > Tools > Security > BullGuard

There are nine files in the folder, one a video aptly titled Video, two PNG files, two .EXE files (one is called BgLicTool and the other BullGuard90_64), a file called licensekey.dat, a VBScript file called Bullguard, and two Windows Command Scripts named License and Install. Are any of these legitimate files? Can I delete them without problems? Kaspersky can't quarantine them and I haven't tried to move or delete them. I haven't run either of the EXE files or opened the video or images. So I have gone through all the usual hoops I can find on the upgrade issues, mostly based off the one error I have managed to get spit back: 0xC1900101 - 0x20017

This is usually found to be a driver error, but after removing everything possible to no avail I said screw it and went for the clean install.

The install media would get stuck at the spinning dots even after booting directly to it, that is until I removed the older hard drives, namely the one with my win7 install. I now have a clean win10 sitting pretty (on an SSD), but here goes my issue, if I plug the win7 drive back in (with computer off) I get stuck on spinning dots again! After restart I can get a repair screen which only leads to a black screen with a mouse. Take out the one drive again and I can get in. Fun stuff so far.

What is most curious: I dropped in the drive when win10 was up (yay sata hotswap), and it read the other two partitions great! But the win7 partition isn't read, leading me to believe something is corrupted there.

Ultimately and ideally I would like to do an upgrade to keep my files around and not deal with restoring everything. less ideally would be getting the win10 install to see the win7 install partition, but I would bet these issues are one in the same.
I have run chkdsk and /sfc scannow, no errors on either.

For record is what I have in win7, and when I hotswap this drive in on 10 C: will not show up.

Hello, I have just installed windows 10 on a dual boot system.
This was my first time creating a new hard drive partition, and it has gone ahead of my old C: partition, meaning the 25gb windows 10 OS is now on C: and my old data has all been moved to D:.
Of course when I tried to launch a game nothing was able to work.

Is it possible to swap around the letters of the partitions?
If I can get D: back to C: all the registry entries will work again. The new partition I'm not fussed about, if I can get it to the D: position I'm happy to install windows 10 again if need be.

Just in case, I am backing everything up. But it would save a lot of time installing apps and transferring files again if I could get the D: partition back to C:

A:Partition letter problem (win10 dual boot)

By Default, Windows always takes the C: drive letter. This cannot be changed. Any programs or games will run from D: you may need to change the path of the game in the executable.

I have Win10 & Win7 installed and booting just fine. Normally when I install Win7 it creates a security boot partition of 100mb which I have been told is better to have. I realize it's not mandatory.

I don't know if Win10 uses it. Is there a way to create that boot partition after the OS's are installed?

A:How to create a security partition after Win7 & Win10 are installed

There are indeed configurations with a 100MB partition that contains the bootmgr. However, you do not have that configuration. Your bootmgr is in the Windows10 partition. There is no need to do anything in addition. Just do not delete the Windows10 partition because then your Windows7 would not boot any more.

I just purchased an Envy 750-247c with Win10. Not liking that OS, I attempted to remove it, couldn't, so I wiped the drive including partitions, recovery, everything. I then formatted it to the Win7 spec, no partitions, one 2T HDD, which i made HD0, and one 128G HD1, they both have been wiped and reformatted. I changed the boot sequence to boot to the CD first, enabled legacy devices. I understood that installing a new OS would reinstall a boot sectore, etc. With a newly purchased Win7 Pro disc, the machine will boot to the CD, open the language, time and currency format, keyboard menue, but i have no keyboard of mouse to make a selection to continue the install. Mouse and KB are USB devices and ports are all enabled. I have tried everything I know to get this thing up and running, I'm relatively computer savvy having started many years ato with a Commodore 64 and tons of computer repair and configuration in the past. This thing has me baffled and I need to get it going. Thanks for the support!

Normally the plastic piece in the middle of the port is blue, in comparison to the other USB ports, and those marked with SS are going to USB 3.0. The SS is supposed to indicate high (super) speed. A port with a lightning bolt in the symbol is going to be a high power USB port, appropriate for charging devices via USB. I hope that helps.

the day i got the machine home and running, i connected my USB harddisk and installed some stuff i had backed up from it.

But suddently i dont see the USB drives when i connect them, i have 2 and none of them is detected, or will they are detected and the "Safelly Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon comes up in my right lower corner as it should, and when i click it my devices is shown by their propper names and i can safely remove them aswell. but they are not shown under "my computer" and my anti virus dosnt scan them aswell.

Tho if i plug in my USB flash pin from my key ring it finds it, anti virus scans it and it shows up just as it should.

Hey everyone,

Today my external hard drive is suddenly not showing up in my computer or on my one file manager program. It is really weird cause the computer reads it and it comes up in disk management and in my device and everything says it is working fine.

I check for updates and everything with no luck. Rebooted it and tried all the simple fixes like that. I dual boot this computer and the external drive pops up on OS X Lion fine and lets me access it and everything, so it doesn't have to do with the hard drive itself.

It has been working fine for months and I really don't think I changed anything in the last day or two with the computer for it to suddenly not be working. Very strange problem. Windows basically says its working fine except it just won't show up in My Computer. I tried connecting with both a Firewire cord as well as USB and neither work. I spent hours checking all over the internet and still no luck.

Any advice? Please help!!

Hello everyone. My first post here, and I really hope someone out there might be able to help. I'm pretty worried about losing all my files.

I have had a Western Digital externall hard drive permanently attached to my wife's old desktop PC (which runs XP) for a year or so. I've always been very pleased with it - it connected perfectly, and it has always just shown up in My Computer there as an extra drive. Perfect. However, that PC was getting old and the memory nearly full, so I copied all my important files (family photos, etc.) to my WD HDDm disconnected it from the old desktop, connected it to my much newer laptop (which runs Windows 7), and hey presto - it appeared in Computer. Again, perfect, no problem. However, I realised that I had not transferred all the files I needed from the old desktop to the HDD, so I had tp disconnect the HDD from the laptop and reconnect it to the desktop again with the intention of transferring the files I'd forgotten to transfer first time around. And this time, the HDD did not appear in My Computer. It DID appear in the little icon, bottom screen right, which you click to safely remove something, and it did show up in Devices, it just didn't show up in My COmputer, so I couldn't access it. The exact same thing happened when I tried to connect it back to my laptop - it's there in the "safely remove" icon and in Devices, but not in My Computer.

Bought a new computer with windows 10 installed, but my work from home job requires windows 7. In need of basic advise please.

I am building a new computer next weekend and have three drives and would appreciate your advice on a partitioning strategy for 3 drives:

- Drive 1: New 256GB SSD m.2 pci-e SSD for Win10 and apps (autocad, sketchup, Adobe CC, rendering apps)

- Drive 2: Old 2010 Vertex SSD which is 90-120gb (can't recall) for scratch disk/win page file for Adobe and apps

- Drive 3: New HGST 7200rpm 4TB 3.5" HDD for files, pics, video and possible system image ( necessary on Win10?)

1) I plan to format all 3 drives as NTFS unless there is strong suggestion to do otherwise?
2) what is best partition strategy for Drive 1? How much GBs for partitions for Win vs Apps? Is 60GB adequate for win10 partition leaving just under 200 GB for apps?
3) I read on win website to create 3 partitions for sys in this order: utilities; sys; win recovery. Does default win setup do this automatically or must I specify how many partitions and in what order and in what size? I'm clueless on this.
4) Disk 2: how much risk am I taking by using 5 yr old SSD for scratch disk? The virtual memory is volatile anyway so am I just risking each current session? I plan to point page file, cache, scratch to this drive. If too risky, I presume that using boot SSD as scratch is better than using HDD #3?

I can tell you how I would start. Boot from the Windows 10 install USB, select custom install, delete any partitions on the first SSD, install Windows 10 to the unallocated space and let it create it's own partitions.

I have 3 computers: 1)Desktop running Windows 7 connected to a router. 2)XP Laptop. 3)New laptop running windows 10.

I have sharing between all 3. Suddenly today the XP laptop does not show up in the Network on the Windows 7 Desktop. The new Windows 10 Laptop shows up. The XP laptop does show up in the Network of the Windows 10 Laptop and I can access files.

I would appreciate any help in why this happened and how to get it back.

Hi all,
I am at my wits end.
I stupidly relied on my Western Digital external to back up all my photography, and today its not showing in My Computer.

When I go to 'manage drives' it shows but is unassigned and when I right click there is no option to assign a letter to the drive. I should point out it does show in device manager.

I tried unplugging it, putting it in a different USB port and also tried it on my lap top and its not showing.

After reading a couple of suggestions I tried a programme called Partition Find and Mount, I didnt know what I was doing but it found the drive and asked me to mount it. I changed the drive letter and after a while it showed the contents in Windows Explorer, which leads me to believe that my stuff is recoverable (I pray).

Can anyone tell me how to get my drive to be recognised again?

Since I built this computer in 2010 I've had a scheduled task which runs a VBS script to remind me to take my tablets each morning. Until the last few days, only one element was visible from this task, the message box spawned by the VBS script.

However, in the last few days, I also get a taskeng.exe window appearing at exactly the same time as the message box. The window is labelled taskeng.exe, has a VBS scripting host icon and the content of the window is pure black.

If I terminate taskeng.exe in Task Manager or click OK in the VBS message box, both the VBS script and that black window disappear.

I have no idea what might have caused taskeng.exe to only appear in this situation, because MSI AfterBurner also uses it to start the app during user login and it doesn't appear for that. Both processes are ones I've been using for ages longer than this problem.

A:taskeng.exe suddenly showing up as window when I run a scheduled task

Heh. I should have clued into the icon that taskeng.exe was showing.

Somehow cscript.exe had become the handler for VBS scripts on my machine. I definitely didn't do that.

This is one I've never had happen without an obvious explanation.

I checked my 270-Gig partition and found it was only 116 Gigs. I restarted the computer and found it at 108 Gigs--a second drop.

What preceded this was a spontaneous CHKDSK run on boot and the disappearance of a very large folder, appx 70 Gigs, and many corrupted files. It is almost as though my system lost 48-bit addressing and went suddenly back to 24-bit. I checked the Windows Registry and found all is as it should be there. This system has been using that 270-Gig partition for months and all files and folders present. This is a sudden occurrance for no reason I can see at the moment.

Running Windows 2000 with P4 processor and 48-bit-capable board, service pack 4 and 48-bit addressing enabled in the registry. Again, it has been using 48-bit for months.

I'm lost on this one, at least for now.

Well, I'd check to see if somehow the registry key that enables LBA48 in the registry has been reset. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=305098

This is just a minor thing but I really want to get it fixed.

Recently I bought a new laptop dell xps15 and its windows 7 home premium 64bit.

I really like it and its got some really special function.

For example when you put your mouse cursor on the icon on the taskbar, it shows you the screen of that programme in a small window box.

But now that function is gone. Instead it looks like this:

does anyone know how to fix it?

Any help will be really appreciated.

I'm putting this in the Win2000 forum because that is where I was when this damage took place.

I've lost my primary partition (Drive C) on my primary hard disk. I was copying files from a secondary disk to the primary disk when it suddenly did a spontaneous boot. After POSTing, it would go no further. I have three partitions on the 238-Gig drive, C (primary), D (logical drive in the extended) and E (another logical drive in the extended).

Active Partition Recovery, which is sometimes some help, is no help and shows the C partition at zero size and only scrambled non-keyboard characters for directory and file names. The D and E drives are still readable from a Windows 98 boot disk; but, when the drive is connected to another machine as a secondary so I can recover files from D & E on either the IDE0 or IDE1 cable, I get a BSOD when I try to boot Windows 2000.

If I could recover the partition information, my troubles would be over. Any suggestions?

By the way, I'm running FAT32.

I had to repair my laptop screen lately and i've left it with a guy for 2 or 3 days. Since then i'm a little paranoid, he asked me for my password and i gave it to him.

First weird thing i noticed, is that a data partition (100Mo) suddenly appeared :

What do you think ?
I'm also interested in an in-depth scan if you would please assist me.

Thank you.

A:Partition Data(E:) suddenly appeared

A new installation of Windows 7 usually places a 100 mb partition on the main drive. It is a system reserved partition and it is normal. I usually hide it by removing the drive letter using the OS Disk Management utility, since it seems best not to mess with its content. Here's a related link.

During the last day, the primary drive on my HDD has gone from practically empty, to being practically full, with only 2Gb left of space that continuously varies between 2.6 and 2.2 when I refresh the page. After having assured myself that no one installed anything during my absence, I ran a full Microsoft SE scan, which returned nothing. My definitions were up to date at the moment of the scan
I am seriously starting to believe that the drive might be infected with something, but I have no idea how to resolve the issues.
If someone could offer some help, I would really appreciate it.
Included is the dxdiag scan of my system. If you need anything else, let me know.

For the second time in 2 months, my XP PRO SP3 hard drive that has all my user, critical files folders and programs keeps showing the H: partition as RAW, and will not access the Folder, Files or Programs installed on it. The last time, I restored data from Backups and reinstalling software. But the software installed on that drive has licenses, and every time I re - install, I have to reapply for authorization.
The Disk is 1 TB,(I have two 1 TB Drives installed, each with 5 partitions and boot individually) partitioned into 5 Partitions, the partition that keeps going RAW is the the Extended Partition H that also has a additional Logical Drive in it labeled I:
I can use and read all the other Partitions including the I: Partition that was created within the H: Partition. It as no Operating Programs from that Partition, it is for data and back ups only. The H Drive Program Files are used extensively. All Programs from all the other Partitions will open and run. I still have on the Desktop the Shortcut Icons that open the Programs on Partition H, they just don't function. H: was called XP CON SYS. That name is also gone. Can't do a disk check from the Management Console. Have tried, also have tried a System Restore, and I can't get the drive or directory structure and files back into view.
So, any one have a sure fire way to correct this without having to reinstall all the Software and files again? And a way to avoid this issue? I was just getting close to hav... Read more
