Upgrade on a budget - help please!

Q: Upgrade on a budget - help please!

Hi all,
My PC is now 5 years old (and not top of the range when I bought it) and I am looking to make some cheap upgrades to improve the speed/capability when running HD movies and some gaming (Civ 5, Football Man 2012 etc). I'm primarily thinking CPU and as a necessity of that the motherboard.

Overview of current PC:
P4 processor, RC415 motherboard, 2gb Ram, NVidia GEForce GT430 GPU, Vista 32 bit, Internal 140GB & external 1TB hard drives.

Looking around the internet at prices and benchmarking a good value/performance ratio option (based on my limited knowledge of PC hardware) would possibly be:

AMD Athlon II X4 631 Quad Core - 2.6 GHz - 55 and
ASROCK M3N78D - Socket AM3 - Chipset 720D - ATX - 40

Can anyone advise me:
1) If this indeed would be a good improvment (on current system)
2) A good option (compared to other CPU's etc)
3) Any compbatability issues I may have not anticipated.

Many thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Gigabyte Socket 775 motherboard with an AGP video card, and I want to upgrade to a system that has PCI express X 16 for a new video card. The thing is, I dont want to see my 2gb PC3200 dual channel kit go to waste because all the new motherboard are DDR2 only.

So is it too late to upgrade to 939? With the money saved without getting new memory for conroe boards or AM2, and the relativly inexpensive price for a 939 board, I can get a Athlon 64 X2 3800 for 939 which is much, much faster than my current cpu, and get PCIX16 video card support, all the things that I exactly want!

A:Budget upgrade: Upgrade to Core 2 motherboard, AM2 or 939?

Works For Me

Sounds like you have thought things out. If you want to save your DDR I (thats what it is called now) a socket 939 motherboard is the way to go. Still avaiable for the present, and socket 939 dual core processors are coming down in price. Just make sure your memory is compatiable with the new motherboard. You should be good for a while, although the future belongs to DDR II.

Ok, so I have allowed myself to spend 300 bucks this pay check and I was thinking going with a I5 6600 6mb skylake cpu and either an ASUS B150M-A D3 or an MSI H110M PRO-D. I was hoping to get some help on comparing these two motherboards. Perhaps if anyone has other ideas I could do while staying in budget or a lil past it. The budget is $300.

Alrightly. I'm looking to do a massive reconstuct to my computer, While trying not to spend too much on building an entire new system. Namely, I plan I reusing my old Case, unless I can find cheaper, good one that I like. Newegg has some cheap ones but their cases are either very cheap but Crappy (you get what you pay for) or just out of my price range.

Eitherway, This may sound like a silly question but how can you tell if your Case can fit ATX or Micro ATX or maybe both? Also, can anyone suggest a very cheap Motherboard that can support HighEnd Gaming and a Radeon card?

Added to that, I need a Very Cheaper Processor but is at least higher then 1G and can fit the previous stated MotherBoard?
Anyway, if you haven't guessed, I don't really know what I'm talking about. I'm just tring to find the Cheapest Motherbaord/Processor that I could put into my current case but can also easily support my games (this computer can't).

A:Looking to Upgrade on a Budget.

Cheap doesn't equal high end gaming. I honestly don't know your definitions of both.

In tech forums, most would tend think $600 graphics card for high end gaming. Such as nForce 6800 GT.

I can't recommend any mobo or CPU that are cheapest and for high end gaming.

My motherboard broke so going to buy a new one. Fancier one like this. I have a amd 840t and was thinking of upgradeing just a little so my gtx 770 wont be bottlenecked. Was thinking AMD FX 6300. Will that be a big enough jump to not bottleneck my 770? I got 1333mhz ram and am open to a decent motherboard and cpu recommendations even intel if its around 200 dollar price range. Any advice will help me a lot. Theres so many motherboards from different manufactuers which i hears some manufactuers have digital signals instead of analog? Or chipsets that are better built and have surge protection. Its all very hard to compare. I was thinkiing of going to a 1150 socket since i hear i5 will just be the best bet for gaming. But there all the compareing to do with that socket and makeing sure my 1333mhz ram works with it. Im just overwhelmed. Any advice?

Ok so I'm looking into getting some new parts because my stuff is starting to show age. I like playing on high-ultra settings in games but some of the newer games I have problems with. So I want to upgrade and get a new motherboard, CPU, CPU fan, 8gb RAM, and a case. For the case and CPU fan I'm wanting them to run as quiet as possible. My budget is $800 so try to not go over on that. If you think I need to replace my PSU or GPU or anything else just let me know otherwise I'm just going to take those out of my current comp and put them into the new case with the new parts. If I forget to list a part just ask and I'll list it.

My specs are:
Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
4gb Patriot RAM
Corsair 720 watt PSU
HIS Radeon HD 5770 1gb memory
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0ghzGigabyte Motherboard model EP45-UD3P

I want to upgrade my PC for gaming. Current specs:

Windows 7 64-bit build 7600
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.67 GHz
4 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT
750W PSU

Scores at Windows Experience Index:

Processor: 7,2
RAM. 7,2
Graphics: 6,8
Game graphics: 6,8
HDD: 5,9

At the moment I can run every game except for Crysis & Warhead with everything maxed out and high resolution (1600-1200 ++) plus some AA, FPS 30-60+. I've been looking at the 1GB HD5870 card, it costs about $400 right now but prices may drop. Crysis & warhead I can run on very high/enthusiast with low resolutions (1280x1024 and lower) and no AA with 20-40 FPS.

Anyway how can I improve my gaming with a vudget of $500...?

Thanks a bunch for any help!

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my current pc (will post specs below) and am wondering what will give me the most bang for my buck as my budget is limited ($600), and I may not have the funds to upgrade again for a while.
Current PC specs:
Intel Core i7 LYNNFIELD 860 @ 2.8GHz, 4GB ram, and a Geforce EVGA GTX 660 ti 2GB.

I was set to order a new MB, ram, cpu, and another GTX 660 ti to run sli.

My new pc would have been (this was all within my $600 budget):

Intel Core i5-4690K Processor 3.5GHz
8GB ram
ASUS Z87 PRO LGA 1150 Motherboard
Geforce GTX 660ti 2GB x2

Ive had some people recently tell me the most bang for the buck would be just spending almost all of it on a video card as thats where the bottleneck for most games is. I can see that being true but my cpu/ram/and mb are about 4 years old... I still think id get more performance for the overall package but im far from an expert and could use any advice and/or suggestions.

Also im a but hung up on going from a I7 to a I5 but the newer cores have to make up for whatever difference there may be right?

Thanks, and sorry if I put this in the wrong spot.

Hello,

I have used your information here and there and generally find you guys are spot on so decided to sign up & ask some qs before i put my bjs down! hope you guys can help!

I am currently upgrading my machine to win7 64 and just bought a new hdd(2Tb) to go with it, funds are tight though so im still running my original mobo ( asus m2n32 sli-deluxe) and my amd athlon 6000 (3ghz) with 6 g Ram.

My basic question is, with new games coming out would i be better running another 280 gtx in sli ( and will it cope?) or should i go for a 460 gtx which appears to bench about the same!

I know i should go full overhaul with proc and mobbo but wedding this year and a massive surfing habit means death to money already so im budgetting 200 ( hd & dvdrw has just cost me 115!) so far my gtx 280 has done me proud but not sure if overclocking or sli is a better ( cheaper?) option than full blown upgradings. I always used to think an "80" was better than a "60 or 75" whatever the number at the front, i hope im still on the right lines!

Any help greatly appreciated!! Cheers mech

I know you all probably read these upgrade help topics all day but please bear with me. I've got a system that I will detail below and I want to upgrade it on a $1000 budget. My end goal is to have a 1080p gaming system. This will be used on an hdtv with hdmi etc. What I mean by 1080p exactly is I want to play games very smoothly at 1920X1080. This includes maximum detail but features like anti-aliasing will never go above 4x I don't think and probably more around 2x. So, I have a system:

CoolerMaster 650w power
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (2x3.2ghz) (I love this processor for anyone considering buying it)
2x1gb OCZ Gold Edition DDR2 800
1x160gb single platter SATA2 drive (not sure of rpms)
MSI Geforce 8600 GTS 256mb PCIE
I am dual-booting XP SP2 and Vista SP1
I have a burner, sound card and other accesories that won't need upgrading.

The power supply is getting upgraded no matter what I think, probably 800w.

Ok, so here are a few ideas I have and I'd appreaciate some advice on them or even better some of your own suggestions.

-Get a solid state drive for my 2 os's so they'll boot and load things very fast, but keep all my games and other data on the SATA drive.
-Get 2x2gb DDR2 800 ram
-Get something like a Geforce GTX 295 (drool)

So with my system there upgraded with a power supply, geforce gtx 295 let's say and the 4gb of ram, do you all think this can be a good 1080p system? This processor has shown no signs of lagging so far so do you th... Read more

My shortlist includes:

ATI Radeon 9550 (28) and possibly 9800 (price permitting)

I am inclined to go the nvidia route as that is what i am used to. What would you reccommend? Is it worth me bothering or should i wait until i can afford a 7800GS (might take a while!!)

My price limit is around 40 (i should be able to sell my current card for around 30) and i am limited to AGP cards.

Thanks in advance

A:Budget Graphics Card upgrade?

What do you need the card for? Just regular computing, or games? If it is games, what games are you trying to run?

If you are into the newer games, I'd look at nothing less than these cards:

1. nvidia 6600GT
2. ATI 9800pro
3. nvidia 6600

in that order.

Good luck!

Since many of these posts are few tears old, I have been having trouble finding a few parts he listed in the entire thread. I could have missed the correct information because this thread is very long. Furthermore this is my first upgrade and build so I am a little unsure about what I am ordering.

My main goal is to create a version similar to kisianik "Uber" 570, but on current components that are economical as well. I would like to upgrade the internal and external Hard Drives to SSD, Upgrade RAM, upgrade processor, video card, and PSU.
I know kisianik recommends the AMD Phenom II X4 965 AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W, but I don't want to deal with extensive cooling issues. However, I do want to purchase the best X4 I can without adding extensive cooling parts. I would appreciate any guidance you can provide me in order to build the most up to date build components. In total, I would like to keep this upgrade under $600. I appreciate your help.

Hi Everybody!

I need some help with my HP Compaq Presario SR5030NX Desktop PC. Lately I have noticed that it has been running low on memory and the performance has been slow. I have already upgraded my RAM to the max capacity (2GB /2 GB (max) ) and I have been running into problems when trying to do general things like surf the net, run WMP11, and some general multitasking. WMP will start skipping as I am running an application or browsing the internet or I will have slow loading times.

I am just wondering if there is anything I can do to improve its performance by not breaking the bank. I have thought about buying a non integrated graphics card to free up memory but I would also need a new PSU since I am working with stock. Could buying a new Mobo with more RAM expansion and a faster processor help or is there anything that you all could think of?

I use my PC for listening to music, surfing the internet, editing videos, and business applications.

Hi PYGMUS. I'm assuming your budget excludes the cost of a monitor and peripherals such as mouse, keyboard and speakers.

Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz - $299.99
ASUS Rampage III Formula LGA 1366 Intel X58 - $299.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 - $139.99
Seasonic SS-850HT 850W Power Supply - $119.99
2x MSI N460GTX CYCLONE 1GD5/OC GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB - $439.98
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB - $74.99
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Black Steel ATX Full Tower - $139.99

Total - $1,514.92

With the remaining cash you could get yourself a good aftermarket CPU HSF and other components of your choice and requirement. You could look towards getting a Blu Ray Drive or SSD if you're interested.

I have $700 to use for a PC setup. I originally was just going to customize a Dell from the Dell web site until I saw how severally overprice many components were and even way outdated! Therefore I want to build my own with parts through Newegg.

Here's what I have so far:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=12032652
I already have a Sata hard drive and THIS power supply so those 2 items can be excluded.

Can anyone tell me for sure the processor, motherboard, memory and case that I picked would all be compatible with each other?

I play on adding a video card down the road also. I remember reading but not sure if it was this specific motherboard, but one of them said it didn't have integrated video so I'm curious as to how you'd even install a video card with no video to install the drivers?

A:$700 Budget for a PC

$700 is a bit more than a budget computer...

You have an OS to install? At least until Windows7 comes out?

I would go with the following (order of your list)
1 - Case: Pretty much anything that is Rosewill = crap. Want a good basic black case with good airflow, try this:
Antec 300 $55 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042 (IS your PSU 24pin and 4pin wires very long? Many of todays cases such as the 300 has the PSU on the bottom)

2 - Keyboard, $7 keyboards won't last long. A good cheap keyboard is an HP or Logitech for $15+ But none of them are as good as what was made 10-15years ago.

3 - Spend $40~50 more on a 24" Samsung. Acer tends to be washed out. Over at Costco, they sell the 24" Samsung for $200. $250 with HD-Tuner and HDMI input. (Add $50 from newegg) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001280

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Produc...=0&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1

4 - With AMD DDR2 boards, its generally best to go with DDR2-800mhz: RAM 4GB DDR2 800 - $47 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1682014518 G.Skills are good, I use them.

5 - Mice : Check out Logitech... $5~10 mice tend to live for a month or so. Spend at least $15+ Good mice are $30~50.

6 - Motherboard The 790 doesn't have onboard graphics. Not sure what you're asking. If you buy a motherboard without on-board graphics and you don't add a video card, you DON'T get vide... Read more

This computer will be used for a range of things, including some gaming (stuff like Tomb Raider: Legend), Internet, Music/Video, School, and so on. - Rosewill RC-204 IDE to SATA Mini Vertical Bridge (for IDE device) -- $14.99 (I have 3 IDE drives and 1 port (2 devices) on the mobo)
- Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply -- $59.99, $39.99 after rebate
- G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL6D-4GBNQ -- $47.99

My current computer:

Dell Dimension 4550

Penitum 4 Northwood 2.4ghz s478 (does not support prescott cpus )
350w Power supply
Nvidia 6600 OC
2 gigs of RAM (Max on Mobo)

I have $200, what can I buy to get decent FPS on TF2, currently I am sitting at 20fps.

Thanks in advance.

A:$200 budget what can I do.

Basically nothing. TF2 relies too much on the CPU for a graphics+power supply upgrade, which you could afford, to make any difference. A new motherboard, CPU, RAM and OS are out of your budget. ~80 $ for a decent motherboard, 110$ for a really good one, 50-80 for RAM, 80-130-150-190 for a CPU, 90-150 for an OS.

good for performance at 1680x1050 on high for most games

If you really need to start shaving the cost down because of peripherals, a few suggestions:
go with the 7750 or 7850 BE and OC it. (will need a different Motherboard i believe)
two, if you have a little faith the 4830 is different in two ways from the 4850 it has 4-shader clusters for 640 total, and 8 less texture units (32). the major vendors of ati cards (in order to get a competitive advantage) have turned on the 5th shader cluster, and the 8 texture units to make them effectively 4850's. and can be had for $89.00. i would also recommend the 4770, if a guy could find one.

Hi, I've got an old Dell Optiplex 780 SFF PC sitting around. I was wondering if I installed a GT 1030 2GB Low Profile, Will I be able able to run modern games at 1080p at Low to maybe even High depending on the game? Some games I'm looking at playing is Rocket League, Overwatch, PUBG, BF1 & H1Z1: KOTK, Would it maybe be worth it spending extra on buying a Q6600, instead of the E8400? How would the performance differ if I did so? & Is the GT 1030 and Q6600 compatible on that motherboard? I've tried looking everywhere on the internet but I seem to be struggling, Thank you to anyone who helps.

A:Budget PC Build

No. Not going to happen. That Chipset is almost 9 years old. You are NOT going to be able to play those games with that E8400 Or even the Q6600. Those CPU's are way outdated, and they would have trouble even running the GT 1030 because it would be a massive bottleneck.

EDIT: You are essentially trying to run a 6 month old graphics card with the processing power of a 8 year old computer. Not a good combination...

Hi, i'll dive straight in and say that i think i need a whole new pc. i think something shorted on my mobo and now nothing works, it won't turn on. ?I think the PSU is ok because after it shutdown (it happened whilst it was on) the fans kept rinng, like they're meant to (Enermax PSU).

So i think i need a new mobo and cpu to go with it, and quite possibly a new graphics card. I'm not worrying about RAM too much because i think i'll probably get that from eBay.

Basically i'm asking for advice on what i could buy, but on a pretty tight budget. I was thinking possibly this cpu AMD Sempron 3000+ and this mobo DFI INFINITY NF4X Socket 754 but nothing's definate yet so i'm fairly flexible.

Thanks in advance

Oh, i found this on eBay too if it's any good

first of, dont buy anyting from www.nt-micro.com . punks sent me wrong motherboard and 3 weeks later i'm still trying to get them to send me an RMA to return it. the one they sent me actually costs 115$ and i spent 220$ on the purchase. they are about to get a call from my lawyer. or my best friend pretending to be one!

anyhow i was trying to purchase the abit fatal1ty an8, not the SLI version. i had the money to spend and i figured i wouldnt need to upgrade it for a while.

the rest of the equipent i bought is as follows:
amd64 3000+ Rev E (Venice?)
2 gigs of Corsair XMS serries pc3200 cas 2 RAM
SATA 80 Gig HD
x700 ATI Radeon pro 256 mb pci-express
550W psu

anyhow i was wondering what motherboards everyone would recommend? and even if i should still with my abit an8 fatal1ty choice. not interested in any SLI boards either kind like ATI.

so if everyone could make some recommendations that'd be great and list a few reasons as why.

thanks in advance. :bounce:

A:I want to get into PC gaming but on a budget.

It's a dual core CPU, no dedicated GPU and no OS. I would look for something with at least 4 core CPU, that has a dedicated GPU and with an OS installed. That price range will be around $400 to $500 (USD). For $500 USD, you could build a very good PC for just about any computing task.

I'm looking to get beamng drive to a decent frame rate(15-20 now) and possibly run some newer games (2010+) on low settings with stable frame rates.Any suggestions/criticisms on this future build are greatly appreciated as im new to this and f****** clueless,I basically pulled at straws when choosing these components. Thanks

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum and would like some help picking my christmas PC. Obviously on a low budget I can't be looking for an amazing gaming PC. But I would like something that could run things smoothly such as WarRock, and WoW. I've been scouring Ebay and have found some interesting PC's but cannot differentiate them enough to understand whether or not I am being ripped off. I am 16 and on a budget of about 350 (do not include anything apart from the actual PC no screen keyboard or mouse needed).

Any help would be seriously appreciated

Hey all,

I've pretty much set myself on everything in my budget build except for the processors. I've been researching for hours and I can't find a consistent answer with which processor to go with. The main battle of the wallet seems to take place between the Intel Core i3-6100 and the Intel Core i5-6500. I'm set on using the MSI gaming RX 470 4GB graphics card with 8GB of RAM.

My main question is: Is there a slightly less expensive, but still cost effective, variant of the i5 quad core?

Thank,
Josh "PC building noob" B.

I will be using the Gigabyte LG1151 Intel H110 Micro ATX DDR4 motherboard if this changes anything.

Okay, so I'm interested in putting together a PC for gaming. So, I've asked around a couple of forums, and I seemed to be getting a lot of mixed messages. Some say I can put together something for around my budget (around $600 or so), others suggest otherwise. I don't know who to listen to, but I obviously hope the former is correct. And I think they are. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I mean, I'm fine not being able to play EVERY game, just being able to play SOME is fine with me.

Now, I should mention that I'm not completely comfortable building from scratch. I am however interesting in purchasing a BareBones kit, which if I understand correctly, includes most of the parts pre-installed, and working from there. I saw one containing the case, motherboard, power supply, processor, RAM, and hard drive. So I'd imagine I just need a graphics card, operating system, cooling fan, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and... I don't know, is there anything else I'd need?

Anyway, here's the link to the one I was looking at: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3017995&Sku=A455-2129 L

Now, again, I know very little about these things. I'm not especially tech saavy, but that seems decent, and it's only $250. It's got 512MB of RAM, what I think is a good processor (isn't it?), it supports PCI-e cards, so I figure if I got another 512MB of RAM, a good graphics card, X... Read more

Well most the parts are used but who cares lol, they were bought off anandtech and hardforum.

Used- MSI K8NGM-V 24$
Used- Kingston 512MB DDR400 35$ *Shoulda waited for better deal
New- ARCTIC COOLING ALPINE64 15$
Used- My old emachine 300W PSU
Used- My old Xion XON-103 Case with 80CFM Fans
Used- Mobile Athlon64 3200+ Clawhammer (1MB L2) 22$ *Worth 80+ on ebay (seller has 2 more available)
Used- My Lite-On CD Burner from e-Machine
Used- My old Maxtor 200GB IDE Hard Drive (Need to RMA the damned thing)

So this is an example of a LOW budget system bought from used parts that I got a good deal on. It has rather low power comsumption because of mobile processor, it is also cool because the mobile processor has no IHS and would be a quiet system if I didnt put 80CFM fans in my case lol. I just need to RMA my hard drive for a new seagate.

Total Build Cost is 96$ Excluding Old Parts, including shipping.

When looking up budget MP3 players alot of lists have ones that are up in the 200$ range. how is this budget?

I am asking for some help because I have never owned an MP3 player except on devices that are other things like computers and phones. Okay here is what I need - A budget MP3 player that is nice and small (possibly something that just clips on and I can run out the door). I would like it to be rechargeable but thats not a deal breaker. I would like it to work just like flash memory and not need any extra drivers or any special software to be required to be loaded just to get some songs on it. It does have to be random song playing with the ability to fast forward/rewind.

I don't need any LCD. I don't need any search for a song function. I was almost thinking ipod shuffle would this be the best of a budget type? I really would like the cheapest possible. Can you access the ipod shuffle without loading up itunes and all that junk?

Now on top of this I do have a few 2GB SD cards already.... is there any one that is cheaper and does not come with memory but has a memory slot and may be cheaper?
