I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi forum,

I'm having some problem about a week ago with Microsoft security essentials bugging out on me and not opening or updating. Basically the message I got on opening MSE was windows cannot access specified path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file. Upon reading this about a week ago, I think! I proceeded to foolishly downloading a Zeroroot access program and a few MSE alternatives. Since then I have still been unable to re-install MSE by deleting all components in the registry.

The error code I get with trying to re-install MSE is 0x80070643

Having then unistalled the zeroaccess program and the previous alternative antivirus programs, I still cannot get MSE working, and I now have a windows 7 update error. The new system update I believe may be to do with security as-well!! The error code on doing a windows 7 update is 80070005, and it did cut out at 9% every time. (although now I think it is just 0%)
Can someone please help me as I have had a very successful streak of avoiding viruses by always usin MSE. I don't want, and can't afford to get a virus attack, not to mention Im runnign windows 7 ultimate so I need the windows 7 updates too because the ultimate can be dodgy sometimes. Nb the update I cannot do is 1.4mb but I am anticipating windows will throw me a new update any day soon which could be anywhere from 30mb to 200mb and it could fail all of it leaving me prone to attacks.

I can not get Windows 7 Update to work at all.  I receive a message that the service is currently not running and to restart the computer.  This does nothing.  I have gone into services under "services.msc" and windows update is not listed as running or stopped.
I came across this issue while trying to get Microsoft Security Essentials to update.  I keep getting an error code.  Of course now that I am writing this and try to get the error code to reference, the update works.  The MSE not updating is a chronic problem for me.
I am still fairly new to the forum, so please let me know if there is additional information, or I make a slip-up.
Thank you.

A:Windows 7 update and Microsoft Security Essentials not working properly

So is MSE updating now as well as Windows Update? Do you still have the problem or did it somewhat fix itself? If it continues to happen, write down the error code as it is printed on your screen and post it here.

Since an automatic Windows 10 update, over which I had no control, Microsoft Edge is not working - as described by others in this forum.

All my bookmarks and history have been wiped and I'm unable to perform web searches other than through Chrome, which I haven't used in the past so have no history, or through web addresses contained in emails - which is how I managed to log into my Tech Support Guy account.

I feel this is totally unethical as not only am I being forced to use Chrome, which is not my choice, I have lost a great deal of information, links and web addresses that are of great importance to me.

At no time before, after or during the process was I warned that I would lose this facility and all the history that went with it.

I am beyond words and would appreciate some advice.
Thanks - to anyone - in advance.

Microsoft patched six Critical security flaws in Windows, IE, Edge and Office

Yesterday was this year?s last Patch Tuesday, with Microsoft pushing out updates for many versions of its operating system. We?ve already seen some of the bugfixes and changes that came as part of this update wave. But now, we also know some of the security fixes that were patched last night.

With this final patch release for 2016 Microsoft published 11 security bulletins, six of which address critical issues found in Windows, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Office, and the .NET framework. As you can see that spans quite the gamut of Microsoft products, so let?s jump in and see what got fixed.

MS16-144 addresses a series of vulnerabilities deemed to be Critical by the company?s severity rating system, that could compromise Internet Explorer and the system it?s installed on. By exploiting the security flaws available previous to this patch, an attacker could get full control over an affected system. The attacker would need to chain exploits together by tricking a user into viewing a malicious website, elevating his privileges on the target machine and then taking full control.
MS16-145 relates to an issue in Microsoft Edge, also deemed to be Critical. By viewing a malicious website, a user?s machine could be hacked and the attacker might gain the same user rights as the victim. Users operating with fewer rights would be less impacted than those operating as administrators.
MS16-14... Read more

Chrome is my default search engine, and I'm frickin' tired of waiting for the UAC to ask if I really  want to open my Chrome link!!  So I shut off my UAC and am currently residing in Administrator Eternity (as I'm the only user anyway). But now I get these URGENT fashing messages from the HP Support Assistant stating that I'm putting my PC at risk!!  If there's another way to fire it up - like Edge, Bing, or IE (all Microsoft products, mind you)...... without the annoying & unneccesary UAC roadblock, please let me know. Otherwise I'll continue to rely on Norton Security and Malwarebytes to stop any bad behavior (isn't that quite remote & highly unlikely anyway?). Would appreciate any comments from those who have dealt with this and can point me in the right direction!!

I have always felt Bios updates should be a user selection and not a required install.  Is that option no longer going to be a user preference?
As far as I can tell, the update was not part of a Dell Updater or some other Dell utility.. but I could be wrong..

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.
Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.
I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

Norton Antivirus is asking users to switch their default browser to something other than Edge because of its lack of extensions.

Norton Antivirus doesn't want you to use Microsoft Edge because it currently lacks extensions.

Extensions provide a wide range of features ranging from adblock to security to much more. In Norton?s case they state ?Norton extensions protect you from phishing and other risky sites. Click Next to change your default browser to a supported browser so that you are protected while you surf the web.? You can still choose to use Edge as much as you?d like and have it as your default browser but only after this warning from Norton.

The new Windows 10 browser, Microsoft Edge, is fortified with security measures to keep users safe.

Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to boost the appeal of Windows 10 to a global user audience. Most recently, these efforts have included tighter security measures for new minimalist browser, Microsoft Edge.

Edge, formerly codenamed Project Spartan, is one of the many new features arriving on desktops when Windows 10 launches this summer. The faster, more lightweight platform will replace Internet Explorer as the go-to browser for the majority of users running the new OS. Internet Explorer 11 will continue to be available for business compatibility.

Microsoft hopes to have Windows 10 on 1 billion devices within two to three years after its launch. That signifies a lot of users who could be exposed to security threats if the Edge browser has the same extent of vulnerabilities as its predecessor.

Microsoft Edge Browser Gets Security Boost - InformationWeek

A:Microsoft Edge Browser Gets Security Boost

A lot of features that were vulnerable to exploits are also removed from Microsoft Edge, which is good. BHOs and ActiveX are two important ones.

Edge will be far less vulnerable than Internet Explorer according to this, which is good.

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

A:Microsoft Edge not Working

When are in the "Where to Next?" page, you cannot use periods unless .com .gov .org, etc. For example: I want to search the Chevrolet 6.5 Turbo Diesel in a 1984 Chevy truck --> I cannot do what I just said because of the period between 6 and 5. Press the "Home" button and then you can use periods on the homepage which is MSN. You can change it to Google by simply:

1. Going to the triple dot in the top right corner
2. "Settings"
3. "Advanced Settings" in "Settings"
4. Turn on "Show the Home Button" if you already haven't then
5. Highlight what it says in the box under and change to Google and you should be able to go from there.

Now, when you go on Edge, always press the Home button, then you can be on your way. Even in a new tab.

Hope this helps your issue, if not please tell us what else is happening, or tell us if it worked or found a solution yourself.

Edit: You know, I just thought of another thing. I had this problem before too, press "Search for what you want" and that should work as well. I had that problem when it said that Google had the wrong address when clearly I didn't.

 Hi experts,
I have a following problem - I am using the Site to Zone Assignment List GPO to assign the local site to trusted sites in order to enable automatic logon. Now when I open the URL in IE11 it works just fine - when I click on Sign In on
the portal it reloads and the user is signed in. When I verify the zone via File -> Properties menu I see, that the site is assigned to the "Trusted Sites" zone. doing the same on the same computer with the same user on Microsoft Edge doesn't
work - it asks for credentials. Now:
 - What is the potential reason for this? I also configured the "Do not sync browser settings" GPO to Disabled and I see it is applied properly
 - Where can I verify in Edge which zone has been assigned to the particular URL (that's a must for troubleshooting this problem)
Thank you in advance for any hints

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise on a ProBook 450 G3 and have just installed the HP Client Security Manager version but running Microsoft Edge (38.14393.0.0), the Client Security Manager icon does not display when at any login page. It does when using Explorer 11. What do I need to do to get this to work with Microsoft Edge?

A:login manager not working in Microsoft Edge

@d-bovey The Client Security extension is not available (at this time) to work with Edge. You cannot do anything about it on your side.  Click the Thumbs Up to say Thanks!Answered? Click this post Accept as Solution to help others find it.

There are no files found in C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\Us er\Default
where the favorites for Microsoft Edge should be. I have "Hidden Files" turned "on" in "View" in File Explorer.
I cannot find them using the utility program "Everything" which lists all files on the computer and offers filters for searches.

I can see all the favorites in the Star tab in the Hamburger menu in the upper right side of Edge.

I deleted all of the favorites from Edge, thinking they might be in OneDrive - although I could not find them in my OneDrive web page either.

Then I disconnected from the internet and imported all of the Internet Explorer's favorites from c:\Users\{username}\Favorites . They all went into Edge.

I then looked in C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\Us er\Default and, again, no files found.

I changed a file name in my IE Favorites folder, but no change was made to Edge's Favorites. Also, that change was not put into the C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\Us er\Default folder.

Reconnected to Internet and everything remained OK regarding using Edge favorites.

Still can't find the Edge favorites files in my computer. The only thing I can figure is either:

1. MS is now putting the files somewhere else in encrypted file(s) where the ... Read more

Hey peeps, just thought i'd give you all a heads up, got a notification from windows update telling me that there are new updates available, these updates are windows live essentials and microsoft security essentials.

These consist of several programs:

Microsoft security essentials is a new program developed by microsoft which takes a new look at windows defender, there's a new, cleaner interface, new icon, and seems pretty fast after the first quick scan... screenshot below:

live essentials is the same live essentials pack you get from the microsoft live site, not much new here, bing bar is included instead of the live search bar, that is all.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials - Windows Update

Thanks for the update.

MSE gave me a pop-up advising me there was an upgrade and inviting me to download and install it which I did. To be honest, I really didn't pay enough attention to the program (except when I got it a while back and set it up) so I don't really see much of any difference in the looks. I have noticed it does scan a bit quicker though - so an MS update/upgrade that actually improved things for a change.

I downloaded the whole Essentials 2011 Suite about a week ago or so. I like some of the changes and not some of the others. I preferred the Live Toolbar to the Bing toolbar - you could customize it more and could give more space to the search box (which I can't seem to be able to widen and think it can't be done). I also wish there were a way to turn off the alert just because I have pop-ups enabled - it should allow you to disable alerts for the items you choose to enable so if a real alert occurs you can notice it. While I like WLM better than Windows Mail, I'm still having trouble connecting to one of my newsgroups (but otherwise it works fine) - though I rarely use it except for newsgroups as I use Outlook 2007 instead. I'm on the fence about Messenger. It seems to take up too much of the screen now with details I'm not really interested in (but end up reviewing because they're there). I don't really use the other applications but downloaded them anyway so I'd be able to fire them up to help answer questions about them in the forum.

Since I recently found myself getting updates at Microsoft, I thought I'd take a look at my download history. Starting May 24, 2001, there was a security update for IE 5.5, service pack 1. Failed to install was noted. If I remember correctly, this new (to me) Thinkpad wasn't working and at this time went for repairs and I got it back just before July 4,2001. Starting July 4th through October 29, 2001, there were 51 "failed to install" for this IE 5.5 service pack 1. Then for some reason on Oct.30th it was successfully installed. Is this unusual?

REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp. released a long-awaited security update for Windows XP (news - web sites) computers on Friday, a response to the growing number of security shortcomings in the market-dominant operating system.

The free upgrade won't be available to everyone right away, however. Microsoft said the timing will depend on several factors, including customers' Internet usage, location and language as well as the overall demand for the package, dubbed Service Pack 2.
Customizing the fixes in 25 languages will take two months, the company said.
English-language users will get the update earlier as Microsoft distributes it to computer manufacturers, companies and home users through downloads, free CDs and other means.
The upgrade, which Chairman Bill Gates (news - web sites) said modifies less than 5 percent of the nearly 3-year-old operating system, is designed to make users safer from cyberattacks by sealing entries to viruses, better protecting personal data and fending off spyware.
For regular users, the most noticeable change will be a series of new prompts users will see. Users will be asked to actively give permission for programs to interact with their computers, so there is less chance they will be hit by a virus or inadvertently allow malicious software that can monitor computer activities.

MSE just had its real time protection turned on, as I apparently did not verify my Windows genuine status, even though I'm positive I did. I didn't see any button to run a check, so I tried to turn on real-time Security Essentials couldn't turn on real time-protection This operation returned because the timeout period expired. Click help for more information about this problem. Error code: 0x800705b4 So I didn't feel like dealing with this, and just decided to do an uninstall/re-install. When I tried THAT (via add/remove programs in control panel), I got this message: The Security Essentials Installation Wizard is missing a filter manager rollup package needed to complete the installation. To continue installing Security Essentials, you must first download the required package. (I click it, and nothing happens) I googled this problem, and found a possible solution on the Microsoft support forums, which was to do a Windows Update. So I try THAT, and even that won't even load, as I get THIS message: The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context. Talk about annoying. Help is appreciated, because I really don't know what to do now!
