dell xps 15 monitor flickering after connecting external usb monitor

Q: dell xps 15 monitor flickering after connecting external usb monitor

Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor. When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second. If I unplug it, it stops. I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor does not have a power cord)? Anything I can do? It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.
Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi NATURAL1DAVE,
What is the exact system model?
Have you connected the external monitor to a dock or hub or directly to the system USB port?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check.
Reinstall the video drivers and chipset drivers for the system from the above link and check.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I just recently purchased an adapter from Amazon HERE...

After going through the run around with customer support, my issue is still not solved.

I am trying to connect an external monitor through HDMI via the adapter linked above, but an unable to solve the issue.  My laptop recognizes the external monitor is plugged in, and is functioning as you would expect with an external monitor (i.e. two screens, dragging between two screens, etc...).  However, it seems as though the laptop is not sending any video output to the external monitor.
I have updated all drivers and installers that were recommended to me by Dell customer support.  Additionally, I had changed a setting in the BIOS to disable some sort of USBC or Thunderbolt 3.0 security, as per recommendation in the comments of the linked (above) product.

Any suggestions?

I bought a Dell XPS 13 9350 in December and I wanted to connect it to an external monitor via the thunderbolt port. I bought an type c to hdmi adapter off amazon and it connects. (Actually bought 2 and the problem persists). But occasionally both my screen and laptop will turn black then back on again. This causes my video that i'm playing to either freeze/crash (netflix/youtube) which is SUPER annoying. It goes from occasional to quite often. It's really random.

My drivers are up to date, cable is new and the monitor is new from boxing day.

Any help is appreciated :)

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have always used an external monitor when using windows vista and now that i have upgraded to windows 7 when i plug in my external monitor it flashes on and off. I have changed the refresh rate on the monitor and all it does is change how fast the external monitor flashes. Also, I had this problem when using windows vista and I changed a setting in windows task scheduler and it fixed it. Tried doing the same thing in 7 and the problem is still there. In addition, I tried using a different monitor cable and the problem is still there. If anyone has any solutions please please let me know.

Hi all,

I am currently experiencing flickering on my external monitor, connected via VGA from my laptop--flickering like a low refresh rate even though it is at 60 Hz. I have a Sony Vaio, model vpcsa490x. The laptop has switchable graphics cards and when I switch into the Intel 3000, there is no flickering. The flickering is only when I am using the Radeon 6630M leading me to believe its the graphics card's fault? I have the latest drivers installed so I don't know how to fix this.

Thanks for any help

Hi,I recently bought a ThinkPad T570. However if I connect it to a second external screen with HDMI to HDMI I experienced a serious flickering. The screen goes black for 3-4 seconds and then ON for 15-20 seconds and so on. What I experienced is that if I start a game the problem is solved. I believe that is related to the fact that the Intel HD640 is beging deactived and the GeForce start to work. Magically, when I return to Windows the flickering restart. I also use the laptop in the office with the docking station but I did not experienced this issue, even if when I use Windows. I already tried to unistall and reinstall the latest driver, change the HDMI cable, tried the monitor with another laptop (the monitor is working perfectly) but nothing has changed.I am very disappointed because I can't use my second screen to work. Any solutions? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,I've been a lurker on here for awhile now and finally decided to post. I have had my HP Pavilion laptop (Windows 7) for 3-4 years now and just recently decided to hook it up to an external monitor to help with home productivity (it's only a 13'' laptop so it was about time). I took my old desktop Dell monitor and plugged it to the laptop via the monitor's VGA cable. However, recently the external monitor (which I have designated as my main display) started flickering for no particular reason. I updated my driver and then googled this issue online. The only real answer I have found is a "grounding" issue that does not pertain to me since my laptop continues to flicker even when it is not plugged in to battery power. So, I went out to Best Buy and bought a new VGA cable thinking that perhaps the cable was old and needed to be replaced. Although the new cable initially seemed to fix the issue, the external monitor still flickers at times, sometimes every few minutes and at other times several times per minute. Now, I just purchased a new 23" HP external monitor and although the flickering is less frequent, it still continues. I tried using a power surge and separating the power outlets for each plug (i.e., the plug's of my laptop and the external monitor) but that didn't seem to do the trick. I also tried using an HDMI cable but to no avail. Also looked at the refresh rate and I can't go below 60 HZ for the external monitor, so I seem to be fine there. Both the laptop and... Read more

A:External Monitor Flickering When Connected to HP Laptop

What does no avail on the hdmi mean? It did not work or it still flickers? Do you have the laptop set to only put out to the external monitor or is the built-in display also being driven by the video card? In other words, how exactly do you have the display set up? I think you are saying you have both screen displaying an image? Are you extending to the external monitor or mirroring the built-in screen? I know the external is the primary monitor but how are you using the built-in display? I would think you would have the best luck setting it to display only to the external. The other constant in the equation is the electrical system. Have the monitors always been plugged into the same outlet? Monitors can be very sensitive to electrical anomalies. I see you use a "surge" (supressor) but the inexpensive ones do not really smooth out power; you have to use a ups/battery backup for that. Is the wall power outlet a 2-prong or a three prong? Have you tried moving the whole setup to another room or another location? Does the built-in screen ever flicker?

Hi,  I have a Lenovo Z50-70 laptop(GeForce 840m(4gb) and i7).  When I plug in my external monitor using VGA cable, it starts flickering and looks like its trying to auto adjust every 3-4 seconds. I have latest Intel HD and Nvidia display drivers installed. I tried to attach the same monitor to my old laptop and everything works fine, so its not cable or monitor problem. Also tried to remove laptop charger, changing display settings etc., and the problem still remains. No idea what else can I do to prevent this permanently.Interesting part: When I launch any game then flickering goes away. When I exit the game, flickering comes back. Its so weird. Thank you in advance for your help.

A:Lenovo Z50-70 external monitor flickering issue.

Check the output frequencies the monitor/display is getting. Either they're exceeding the display capability and/or the refresh freq is off, 60HZ is the norm for flat panel displays while some will handle higher up to 75HZ but only lower will be visible to the eye. The resolution may also be wrong as it may not be detected to set the correct resolution for that display as well.

Hi,one of the guys at my workplace uses two displays with his X250 and Pro Dock. One of them is an LCD 1080p connected through DP and the second one was an ancient display with 1440x900p panel connected through VGA. Week ago or so the VGA display started flickering, and is unusable for work since it hurts your eyes after a while.I have tried every solution that was either recommended on the internet or I thought of, yet the problems persist.Until now, I have tried changing the cable, display, Pro Dock, none of that worked. I also tried installing latest firmware from Lenovo Update for the Dock and latest BIOS. I even reinstalled Intel HD Graphics driver, along with some other drivers from Lenovo support page. The display works properly when connected directly to the notebook, only in the dock it starts flickering. Is there anyone that had similiar problem and knows how to fix it?

In the last few months I have purchased the ProBook 655, UltraSlim Docking Station, and two monitors all from HP.com.  I am trying to connect the monitors from the Docking station's DisplayPort to the Monitors VGA port.  The screen flicker, shake, and go black then come back on again.  I have updated the graphics card. Updated the firmware for the Docking Station with several different updates (SP69276.exe, SP74203.exe, and SP75855.exe). All this resulted in absolutely no change. Also, tried 4 different cables.  If I undock the computer and use the displayport on the side of the computer the monitors work perfectly.  So I don't think that it has to do with the graphics card.  The VGA to VGA cable between the docking station and monitor works great too.  But I really desire to run to full size monitors and there is only one VGA port on the docking station. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?  I am finding it impossible to even find a phone number to call HP to see if they can help.

My XPS13 9350 was one of the first with USB-C port (Thunderbolt 3) only and no DisplayPort, supplied in early 2016. It has caused a lot of headaches. As I tried to connect my external Dell monitor using  a USB-C to HDMI adapter from Dell (part no: 47KD7) there was no external display at all. Dell Support advised me to update BIOS. But it led to a complete freeze of my laptop and Dell replaced the motherboard. (It was a real nuisance as I use my laptop for work!!)
With the new motherboard,  the laptop/USB-C adapter/external monitor worked fine for 15 months. Until one day, out of the blue, the external screen started flickering with an image that was all distorted (cut in the middle). The laptop screen was fine. After a few weeks of flickering, there is no signal at all to the external screen. Moreover, as I connect the adapter in USB-C port the resolution on my laptop screen changes.
I know there have been a lot of issues with USB-C connector on XPS 13 and 15.  I have reduced wifi-power to 50%  but it has had no positive effect (several persons have said on this forum that it helped the video output).
I am grateful to learn if anybody with similar problems found a solution. Cheers

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

A:connecting an external monitor

That should be in your video settings. It's probably under something labled "Additional Monitors." A lot of settings like that are pretty dependent on your graphics card software. What type of graphics do you have?

Also, are you trying to display on the TV and the Laptop simultanously? For the interim, you might be able to just click Fn-F8 (I think that's the right one for most laptops), which will switch displays to the TV. If it isn't F8, you should still be able to determine which of those keys. This will at least let us know that the computer is seeing the TV.

When we connect an older ADI 19" monitor to a Vista laptop, it shows no images even though the monitor power light is green, indicating a video signal.

I played with all the display settings (refresh rate, resolution), the function-F5 key to select the display, etc., did not help.

When I connect a different monitor to the laptop it runs instantly, so the VGA port and laptop work fine.

When I connect the ADI monitor to a different laptop, an older WinME laptop, it works fine instantly. So the monitor works fine.

In display properties it shows the monitor as a non-pnp generic monitor. It says the driver is installed and the device is working correctly.

I decided to try a different driver, so I looked online to find a monitor driver, but when I tried to install it, Vista said it already had the most up to date driver installed. And monitors usually run anyway even without the driver, so I am not sure if looking for a driver is the way to go.

Hi, I think it has DisplayLink sticker or DisplayLink Certified that means you can connect 2 monitors at the same time. It has DP port (6) and HDMI port (5) and you can use both             Side note: From your image, the dock price is US$149.00 + tax (says 7.5%) = around AU$210 but HP in Australia sells for AU$329              Amazing ! AU$100 more for HP Australia for a same product. May be HP has to ship the product from China to the US first then send first class air to Australia. Regards.

Hi, I hope someone here can help.

I want to watch films on my CRT television in my apartment, so I bought a VGA>Component cable so that I connect my laptop to it via VGA.

I purchased my laptop in the UK, and have since moved to South Korea. It is a Sony Vaio with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

So far the closest I have managed to get is heavily distorted (positionally and colour wise) screen.. I have attached a picture of this. I get this only if I extend the desktop area.

However, when I move the mouse over to the CRT screen and right click, as soon as I touch a flyout menu (such as 'view' or 'sort by') the screen goes black and then refreshes.

I have a feeling this is a PAL / NTSC issue (in that the UK is PAL, and Korea is NTSC), yet there is nowhere in my ATI CCC software to change the region modes.

I have changed Windows 7 system locale to Korea, but it didn't make a difference.

Also CCC cannot detect the settings such as maximum resolution etc.. for the television, and Windows detects it in Device Manager as a 'Generic Non-Pnp Monitor'

Any ideas on how to get it working? Please help

Many thanks

A:Connecting a Yoga 2 11 to an external monitor

Hi, welcome.

It shouldn't be hard to connect an external monitor to a laptop. What kind of port does it has? mini DP? HDMI?

What I had see on other cases is that some cables and adapters may produce some problems. So trying different ones that you may have arround, or connecting the laptop to a near by TV just to be sure it is not also the monitor.

My only ideas are:
1) Try Win+P key combination to be sure that you ar extending or duplicating the screen with the secondary monitor.

2) From the Yoga 2 11 support site, try update the video driver and see if something improves.

Give it a try to see if something works.

When I connect a different monitor to the laptop it runs instantly.

When I connect the ADI monitor to a different laptop, an older WinME laptop, it works fine instantly.

I looked online to find a monitor driver, but when I tried to install it, Vista said it already had the most up to date driver installed. And monitors usually run anyway even without the driver, so I am not sure if looking for a driver is the way to go.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Might be of more use if we knew your system specs (lower left corner) so we know what video card, memory, etc

I own a Yoga Pro 3 with Windows 8.1 installed and I would like to use it with a external monitor.  I bought a cable with a HDMI mini port on one end and a standard HDMI port on the other.  When I connected the HDMI mini to my Yoga Pro 3 and connected the other end to my monitor, it did not see my desktop on the external monitor.  Does anyone know how I can use a external monitor with my Yoga Pro 3?

Hey thereI received an external monitor which I want to connect to my Yoga 2 Pro. The monitor (besides USB) has a VGA-plug an a displayport-plug. My Yoga Pro has micro hdmi-plug. Can anyone tell me what's the best way to connect these two devices? I was told to buy a cable with one end as a displayport (male)  and the other end as a micro-hdmi (male). However, I can't find such a cable on the internet? Has anyone a good recommendation? Thanks, Pascal

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

Is it possible to connect a Thinkpad laptop to two external monitors? Does the computer allow for that within "display settings"? So in "customize display", when you have your laptop + 1 external monitor, it identifies primary and secondary as 1 and 2. Would it incorporate a third? Would it work with "extend display"? Also, would it work from perspective of connecting the monitor? I'm currently deciding which Thinkpad to purchase, but say I have an X1 carbon, there is only HDMI cable. Are there alternate means of connecting the second external monitor? Any input would be much appreciated!!

Please helpI am trying to connect my new Yoga 900 to an external Full HD monitor Samsung syncmaster b2430hd using the following adapter which I connected to the USB type c of the Yoga and to the HDMI port of the monitor: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00X4S5C7G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 However, the picture on the external monitor look fuzzy and the taskbar is hardly visible.I?ve tried reducing the resolution to the native for the external monitor i.e., 1920 x 1080 but still did not help. Are there any adjustments to the display settings that I can make to improve the picture on the monitor?

A:Connecting Yoga 900 to an external monitor issues.

Welcome to the forums!

I have a suspicion it has to do with the video scaling setting on the SyncMaster. If you go to Picture > Advanced Settings > Picture Settings, look for Size. Change it to Screen Fit. There may also be a button on your remote to change the Video Mode / Aspect Ratio or something similar.

I am trying to connect my Lenovo Yoga 900 to an external monitor (Dell) via an Anker USB-C cable to the monitor's HDMI. When I connect, it mirrors the laptop screen on the Dell monitor, but the computer can't detect the external monitor, meaning I can't extend the display or use with the lid closed. Help!
