https ok, http not

Q: https ok, http not

I am running xp, IE7 and have installed SP3. I access the corporate office via cisco vpn client. The home office does periodic updates, may have already installed SP3 but I doubt it. (Actually my wife's computer so I am never entirely sure what has or has not occured) My problem is that I can no longer access http pages only https pages, either when logged in thru vpn or not. Other computer on the network is working fine. I get the Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage error when attempting to log into yahoo, etc.
thanks for any help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can only access https websites, not http. I have tried pinging google and it works so I know my internet is working. I have tried restarting the computer, disconnecting and then reconnecting the internet and it still only lets me connect using https. When I try to visit a website with http it says the connection was reset. This happens in every browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera). How can I get my internet working properly again?

A:Only https no http

Temporarily disable whatever firewall you are using. If that solves the problem, it's a setting in the firewall that's causing it - possibly it's blocking port 80 which is the port used for browsing non-secure (http) pages.

Welcome to TSG! Is this one of the things you tried?:http://mellasviews.hubpages.com/hub/Easy-Fix-For-HTTP-Port-80-HTTPS-Port-443-and-FTP-21

A search I did found a few (fairly old) results that claimed to 'fix' this, assuming it's Internet Explorer that's causing the problem. At least two of the fixes involve checking the LAN settings under 'Internet Options' and either unchecking all the boxes (or just the Proxy Server option), depending which one you read.

I have no idea if any of the suggested solutions actually work so, if you use them, it must be at your own risk. If you create a Restore Point before you try them you should be able to undo anything that makes things worse.

I hope some one can help me with my problem…
My problem is one the web site I visit making me crazy every time I click login the page can't open but if I change the address from https to http it open. The thing is this only happin in my laptop but in my disktop it work fine.
The site is http://www.mtc-vodafone.com
The problem start after I click login …it will not open.
Please help me

A:http and https

Http an Https are a security matter mostly. Normally on a site if the address is https://my vodafone then security is on, by changing it to http, your tryign to access it on an unsecure channel.

And I know vodafone are a pain in the behind, they're the same in Ireland. But im afraid normally you just gotta wait for them to fix it.

I am running Windows XP Pro on a desktop system. The problem I am having is that I can not connect to the Internet. I ran Microsoft's connection trouble shooter and it returned with this message: Can not connect through HTTP port 80, HTTPS port 443 or FTP port 21. I can see the lights on the back of my computer were I plug the network cable into, it looks normal. I have tried different cables, different ports on my router. My router works fine in the wireless mode, and with other computers hooked up via a cable. I am assuming that my router is OK. I have Microsoft's firewall turned off and I have set my Webroot security firewall sset to allow all traffic. Not sure what to try next. I truely appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks,

A:Exchange IIS and OWA - FBA - http vs https?

It has to be something in the authentication settings for IIS... this is whats baffeling when I put it at no anon user access and only clear text access (as told I should have it at) I get a windows login prompt before OWA's FBA connection. If I allow anon connection and do not enable clear text I don't get the promt but then I get Unauthorized access.

I have tried to regain general internet HTTP browsing. I can get to all my HTTPS sites. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my wireless hardware, twice. I have compared all the connection info with my other computer with wireless connection, and all reads the same. Each time I try to connect to something general, like Google search page, this message shows up: error attempting to validate winsock base providers:2, not all base service provider entries could be found in winsock catalog, reset is needed. Yet, all connections show they are working. Anyone know what to do? using XP Pro, Verizon DSL router

A:Have HTTPS connection, but not HTTP

Is your router an all-in-one or do you have a WAP connected to your router?
Sounds like either your router isn't allowing port 80 traffice inbound/outbound or your internet browser is set to Trusted Zone rather than Internet zone.

I have had the same problem but reversed, in that I could not get to SSL sites (HTTPS - 443) but that was due to a PAT rule between 2 routers not forwarding 443 traffic.

Hi,
I hope I'm posting this in the right forum...
I'm a member of an affiliate program that requires that I enter my Social Security number into a field on the "account info" page of the affiliate Website. The complete SS number stays visible on that page for as long as I have an account.
When I joined the program the site was an http site and I told the company that I wasn't willing to have my SS number sitting on a non-secure site.
They have now put up an https version of the site that I feel OK about entering my SS number into, but they have left the http access to the site up - I can still log in with the http address and see my SS number there.
Am I endangering myself by putting the SS number up via https if I don't access the http version of the site (and therefore transmit the SS info over an non-secure http connection)?
I hope that's clear - thanks!

A:http and https sites

SSL is actually used for transmission of data between a computer and the site.
You are right to want to send your info securely on https so it doesn't get
intercepted.
The security of information on the site is the responsibilty of the people
running the website.
If the members area is properly secured,it should be very difficult for
anyone but you and site adminstrators to access it.
Make sure to use a strong password and not give it to anyone, including through email.
If you want to login,go to the site and login on an https page.

My internet has the following problem:
I cant open facebook or youtube with http. When I try, request times out.
all the time I want to open them I should change http >> to >> https. I know it's S stands for secure connection and thing but this is really annoying.
still It's simple to change http with https, but the most annoying part is, that all the external links I try to open from Facebook are opened with HTTP, like this :
Code:
http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DRQ5ljyGg-ig&h=SAQFjVP-_AQHPeSLtLXRD5fHpvggng9olROSkaihM9VfEBg&enc=AZPUnXfInCazM4cS0S9g9A9rlaH3tFGQvqlhlk8bfdRScNi7Bm8ZTMvZIYnIdrp2ZgaZ4p2Sb_9mv3cf_8F2PosL
So I had to change them with https too.

I have tried almost every browser: Chrome, Opera, Comodo, IE. It does same in every of them.

Last time I also discovered that my Live Messenger didn't connect also, when I 'Troubleshoot' the problem it says Problem is in- Key Ports. maybe this information also will help you.

any solutions?
Thanks in advance

Hi, my daughter has been having trouble logging onto the internet on her Acer notebook which has an xp operating system.

The wireless network connection tells me that we are connected with excellent strength yet we cannot get onto the internet. When we run a diagnosis check it tells me there is a problem with http, HTTPS, ftp connectivity and that it may be linked to a anti virus (there does not appear to be one when I check then programs).

I have read some threads on this forum and tried the clear cookies cache, run cmd, release IP etc but to no avail. Any ideas?

Can someone please tell me if there is anything wrong with either of the two screenshots below. I was one of those caught up in this weeks email kerfuffle and although the account hacked was not my main email account and only involved six addresses in my address book it has made me unsure about using Hotmail. I changed my password and even uninstalled and reinstalled WLM. After reading an article on http and https I started noticing that when I signed in to WLM and wanted to see my email, in the Hotmail sign in screen that appeared the address was only http as in the screenshot here.If I added the s in the address bar on this page and changed it to https I would then get the following sign in screen.http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/blue...tmailSecure.jpgNow my question is, are both these sites valid or has WLM itself been corrupted and somehow I am being redirected to a fake sign in screen?. Thanks in advance but i'm a bit confused here.

I have a long running feud with my internet provider. They have a site where i can log in to view my personal data (email, bills, etc.) and my user name and password has to be given. This is an http site! However, when you do log in on this http site you are transferred to an https site. ???????????
My point is that the transfer of my user name and password is not secure since it is done via an http connection. They deny and claim everything is secure.
The funny (but not haha) part of it is that they also have an https site where you can log in (found when googling but way down in the listings given by Google).

I am confused. Totally.
They even told me once i had a redirecting virus. Nonsense, of course, because google gives the https as well as the http site for logging in.
Any information to clear up my confusion? Am i nuts or are they?

Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21).
Does anyone know how to fix this problem without connecting to the internet and doing online scans?

and several other sites with https prefix will load fine.  Other computers on network, wired or wifi, Win 8.1 or XP load sites fine.  Further, file sharing between computers on network work as expected.  Network troubleshooter sees nothing.

A few days ago I noticed some problems in updating my stock prices using Microsoft Money and Quicken. Also, when I logged on to my online bank the site kept on asking me my security questions. It told me to avoid this I should allow cookies to be placed upon my laptop. I'm using Firefox and it is set to allow cookies. As a matter of fact the cookies for this particular bank site were are ready in Firefox. (one does expire in a few days, but it is OK for now).

I asked other users if they were able to download the stock prices using Quicken and Money, and they reported no problem.

Up to this point, the only problems I had were described above. Using Firefox and Microsoft Outlook, I was able to browse the Internet, send and receive e-mails, and perform all normal wireless communication functions – and run World of Warcraft.

I attempted to use Internet Explorer 7 ( that was previously installed on my PC months ago) to hook up to the Internet. For some reason Internet explorer could not hook up. I downloaded the Internet Explorer again and reinstalled. Same result, I could not hook up to the Internet using Internet Explorer. Not that I matter too much about not using Internet Explorer, but I think this is an indication of the same problem that I'm having downloading stock prices, and signing on to my online bank. Using Internet Explorer I ran a network diagnostics check. Basically it told me to check the firewall settings for each HTTP port 80, H... Read more

Hi all

I am unable to connect to the internet on my other laptop and when I run a diagnostic it tells me " cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP" and to check the firewall settings. We are currently running norton antivirus and from what I can tell this may be the problem but I don't know where to start to fix it!! Can anyone help?

Thanks

For the past week or so I've only been able to access HTTPS sites in the evening between about 10pm to midnight. The rest of the time it seems to be fine.

At first I thought all internet was down, but then I realised it was just HTTP sites that weren't loading.

I've googled this and it seems like an known problem. The only difference is it only seems to happen in the evenings - about 10pm to midnight.

I've tried running spyware tools such as SUPERAnti Spyware and Spybot Search and Destory with nothing detected.

I'm using Windows 7 and have MS Security Essentials running.

I've tried connected via the WiFi and via an ethernet cable.

It seems to be affecting the other laptop in the house and the phones in the same way, although the other laptop is now broken so can't verify this.

Any ideas of what it could be?

Thanks.

After a session of updating my Win 7  x64 IE 9 Professional OS will not recognize http or https links in shortcuts.  I get the error message
.

"Unable to open this Internet Shortcut.  The protocal "http" does not have a registered program"  and the same message for https

Restoring to the state before the updates did not help nor did turning the system off and restarting

The Microsoft help site offered what appeared to be a very complicated procedure that appeared to involve editing the registry.  There appears to be a dll now missing.  I am not unduly afraid of messing with the computer but this is out of my comfort zone.

An address with http or https works just fine if entered directly into IE 9

Any ideas for a fix?

HELP!
When I try to open a link from my mail inbox, or try to connect to a secure site for payment, registration etc. I get an internex explorer connection error message which when diagnosed results in the message attached (error msg1).
The windows log file is also attached as is the hijack this file.
I have recently installed avast which was the final throw of the dice in a nasty bout of redirect virus scuffling, and it all looked to be working ok directly after the install.
During the war with the redirect virus I have ran malwarebytes, combofix, tdss killer, eusing registry cleaner, microsoft security essentials, and microsoft malware removal tool.
I have been very close to converting my laptop into a 2nd storey frisbee, but please, can somebody offer me some hope?
Best regards, and in pain,
Paul.

I had a bad redirect virus a week or so ago. Ran all the correct software and got rid of it. I am now having problems with opening links. When I click on a link in my email (I have windows 10) instead of opening them, I get a pop up that says I need a new app to open HTTPS. When I click on the AppStore to find a new app these are the options I get: Loadkit Download Manager, Turn off lights, Sidekick private browser, Webaccess and No trace left behind. I did try a system restore but it still continued to do this. I use Chrome as my main browser and a few days ago noticed that the "do you want to set chrome as your default browser" popped up, I clicked yes and got the same pop up saying I needed a new app to open https/http. I have posted in the Am I infected Forum, went through the steps provided and while the computer is running fine, the problem still exists. I do not know if it is the virus but since the problem started when I got the redirect, I figured it was a good place to start. Is it possible that something important was just deleted? I do not know but any help you all can provide is much appreciated. (Specs: HP15 laptop, touch screen, windows 10)

looking for help in solving the http, https, ftp connectivity error. Currently I can access most all of my browser features, but when I attempt to visit certain site (i.e. microsoft.com) I get a message "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". After clicking on the "diagnose connection problem" prompt and still not achieving a connection, I checked the results and found the erorr listed as "http, https, ftps connectivity". I have attempted to clear by running "fixcleaner" but to no avail. I also read several other threads posted here related to the same error message and still have been unsuccessful in correcting this issue. To make matters even more frustrating, I can utilize one of two different laptops in the household through the wireless router, and have absolutely no issues. Moden connection is a cable modem.

A:[SOLVED] http, https, ftp connectivity

If the system is infected, this kind of issue will occur. You can confirm it by visiting some Antivirus websites like Norton, kaspersky etc.

Try this:
Disable the DNS client service.
Start-Run->type "services.msc" without the quotes and press enter. Right click "Dns client" and select properties. Select the "Start-up type" as "Disabled" and click Apply and ok.

That should work.

If this doesn't work, try scanning the computer with "Trojan remover" and restart it.

Hope it works for you.

Regards,

When I start up my computer I can navigate normally for exactly 10 minutes.
After that point in time I can only navigate to https or ftp sites, but any http URL returns "page cannot be displayed".
I've already tried netsh winsock reset catalog, netsh int ip reset reset.log, uninstalled & reinstalled WLAN and Network adapters.
Same result with IE and Firefox.
Created new local user on PC, same result.
Searched registry for "timeout", "600", "600000" (seconds and milliseconds) - no joy.

When connecting from the office, I get no internet connection at all when using auto detect or auto proxy script (works fine for others) but when using a proxy for the LAN on port 8080, problem does not manifest itself, ie. I can navigate to http pages at all times.

Current workaround from home - connecting via VPN tunnel to corporate network, then use the proxy to go out to Internet (in this scenario both, auto detect and autoproxy script, work just fine).

So I guess something is blocking port 80 on my laptop 10 minutes after reboot, but WHAT?
Any hint would be highly appreciated.

My desktop PC is connected to my wi fi router through LAN and I was able to access the internet till now. Yesterday I was installing a new Anti Virus software called Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 after removing the old Norton Anti Virus (validity had expired); when I selected the option to activate online the anti virus after installation, I got the message "Activation Error; Unable to connect to server".

Thereafter I was unable to use the internet although the the network icon reflected that the Local Area Connection status as 'connected'. Attempts to repair the connection by invoking the Local Area Connection Status window and to seeking repair the connnection through the Support drop down initially gave messages like 'Unable to clear DNS cache'. This issue was resolved by re starting the DNS Cache through the Administrative Tools-Computer Management- Services. Thereafter when I attempted to repair the internet connection again the message 'Unable to repair ARP cache came up. This too was resolved but the internet was not accessible.

The network diagnostics shows:-

HTTP: Error 12029 connecting to microsoft.com/www.hotmail.com. Connection with server could not be established.
HTTPS: Error 12029 connecting to microsoft.com/www.passport.net. Connection with server could not be established.

Hello,

We recently had a virus/trojan on our computer. Kapernsky caught that an infection was occurring and I believe quarantined everything. Suddenly we were not able to access the internet and were getting this error...

Windows cannot connect to the Internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP.
This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer.

Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21).

I just worked with someone in the security department and they are seeing my system free of viruses, but were unable to help in getting the settings restored on the computer so we can access the internet.

This are the results from a Windows diagnostic that I ran...hoping it might be useful.

All 3 of them are not working for me. I'm using another computer just to type this.
The HTTP, HTTPS, FTP diagnostic reads:

warn HTTP: Error 12029 connecting to www.hotmail.com: A connection with the server could not be established

warn FTP (Passive): Error 12029 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established

warn HTTPS: Error 12029 connecting to www.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established

warn HTTPS: Error 12029 connecting to www.passport.net: A connection with the server could not be established

warn FTP (Active): Error 12029 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established

error Could not make an HTTP connection.

There are a few more diagnostics left, but hopefully this is the important part of it all.

One computer on network cannot connect to Internet
I've run into a bit of a strange circumstance here, where one of the computers connected through the router suddenly cannot connect to the Internet. No one had touched the computer.

This computer's running Windows XP and uses cable Internet through a router that two other computers are hooked up to. Every setting I checked was telling me that the computer was connected to a working internet connection, but no program is able to access it.

Help this is driving me crazy. Spent 2 hours chatting with some guy from Linksys.

Try this first.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

If that doesn't do it, please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.
