Thinkpad W530 Boot Loop

Q: Thinkpad W530 Boot Loop

Hello,I ran into a problem with my W530The computer suddenly shut down while inbstalling a Windows 10 update (not sure which one), and entered a boot loop.Once the Windows 10 logo appears, the PC shuts down immediatly. I can access the BIOS and the hardware diagnostic utility, which I ran with no faults found. So far, I have tried removing all but one RAM module at the time and trying to boot, booting with legacy instead of UEFI, with/without the battery connected, even a hard drive swap with another windows 10 computer and can't even boot from it. What are your thoughts?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey there, Wednesday evening I got home from work to find that my w530 had ran out of battery. I plugged it in and attempted to start it, but was unable to get past the lenovo splash screen and couldn't get to windows login. Iritatingly, the computer will randomly boot to windows login and allow me to login very rarely.Since then I've tried various attempts to fix the issue but things haven't improved. Initially I could attempt to boot to a DVD or USB but now when I select either boot option the computer goes right back to the boot options. If I can use one, the computer will hardreset and reboot. If I hit f12 I can get into BIOS or into the diagnostic utilities and the computer is stable without any crashes, even when running diagnostics for 3+ hours. Diagnostics have not found any errors with the ram, mobo, cpu, or HDD.I thought initially it might be something BIOS related, so I reset to default options, tried pulling the CMOS battery, and then flashed and re-installed the latest BIOS version without any effect from any approaches.I pulled RAM sticks one at a time to see if that was the issue without any change. I then tried pulling the HDD, all but 1 ram stick (4gb of 16gb), as well as pulling the 16gb SSD flash drive. Even with this I couldn't get the computer to boot by USB or DVD. When I connected the HDD to my desktop tower and used the bootrec.exe command in command line I was able to get the tower and laptop to get to windows, but it has since reverted.I've diss... Running Windows 10 with all latest updates (other than one above) and all drivers updated through Lenovo System Update. System Repair unable to do anything useful. Was able to restart from a backup, but the update continues to destabilize the system after application. Anyone have any solutions other than cancel Windows Updates? Thanks,RMNY

My 230u has been stuck in a loop since a recent Windows Update. The machine crashes while booting Win 8.1, reboots and crashes again during the recovery phase, then this cycle repeats. Reinstalling Windows doesn't work, as the same thing occurs during the install process, even with a 'clean' install. I've run the pre-boot Lenovo Diagnostics, and every result reads 'PASSED'. I've attempted to update the BIOS from both a bootable CD and bootable USB, and the result reads 'failed to read bios". The machine is currently a brick that passes all diagnostics. Is there any solution to this? EDIT: Current bios version is 1.70

Hi everyone! I have had my ThinkPad W530 for a couple of years now and have been experiencing this problem basically from when I first got this laptop. When I try to power up the laptop, it does not turn on - sometimes it reaches the ThinkPad boot screen and I am able to enter the BIOS, but when I try to diagnose hardware issues, the computer turns back off. Sometimes I am able to boot into Windows or Ubuntu, but the computer turns off immediately after the boot (without bluescreening), or if i just let the computer sit for a couple of seconds. There are also other times where when I press the power button, the power button LED turns on for a second and you can hear the hard drive start spinning and then it just stops almost immediately and the power button turns back off, with nothing being displayed on the screen. I am pretty sure this is not a harddrive problem because I have tried replacing the original harddrive with a harddrive that works. When I did this, at first, I was able to boot into Ubuntu (as I have that OS on the other hard drive), but after a couple of minutes, the computer turned back off. In addition to this, I have tried booting into an external bootable USB, but just as I was trying to boot into the device, the computer would turn back off. I have tried doing these with the battery in and without the battery. I have also tried doing the "hard reset" by disconnecting the battery and AC adapter from the computer, holding the power button for ~... Read more

A:ThinkPad W530 not turning on at all

Since you mentioned that you had the motherboard replaced, I am not sure whether my solution can be applied to your problem, but the things you described appear to be similar to what I experienced with my w530 (2436CTO, i73840QM): the power goes out irregularly and sometimes it doesn't turn on at all. I had the issue for about a week. The machine was running great till the nightmare. At first, I thought it was dead. When I pressed the pwr button, the button light was on for a second. I also noticed the think light flashed. After hours of trying the tricks that you also discribed in your post, I was able to get it up and running by luck. I thouht the problem was solved until it suddenly shut down. And more unexpected poweroffs. I was blaming battery first, then RAMs, then power jack, finally I was able to narrow it down to the motherboard. Here is a quick way to diagnose whether your problem has the same cause: firmly press the power slot ( left highlight in the illustration of the maintenance manual  page 100 ) and push the power button, if you can boot it up without issues, then it might be the same problem, which is likely that some connection in the motherboard near the power slot is wearing out. Simple solution: fold a piece of paper into a short thick stick, slide in the gap between the magnesium structure frame and the right brass arm of the thermo fan (at where they cross), so that the board is effectively pushed down to enforce the power connection... A:How to connect 2 Monitors with Thinkpad W530 ?

Are you trying to connect your second external monitor using a cable with VGA at one end and DP at the other end, with the VGA end connected to the VGA connector on the W530?  NOT POSSSIBLE.  You are actually using that cable in the opposite way for which it was designed, which is to go FROM A DP CONNECTOR ON THE COMPUTER TO A VGA CONNECTOR ON THE MONITOR.

DisplayPort target monitor connectors are only usable with a DP source connector on the PC.  DP source is very flexible, being able to support a DP, HDMI, DVI or VGA connector on the monitor.  That's why you find all four 2-ended cable types for sale.  But you have to use the DP end on the PC in order to support DP, HDMI, DVI or VGA target connector on the monitor.

But a DP target on the monitor can ONLY be handled by a DP source on the PC.  You can't connect it to the VGA connector on the W530.

Sorry... you can't use two external monitors both of which are connected through DP.  Only one on the W530.  You'll have to use a monitor supporting a VGA connection if you must use a second external monitor.

Newer laptops (e.g. P5x/P7x) have DP and HDMI, which would provide additional flexibility for connecting two external monitors with a digital connection (i.e. not analog VGA).

A:ntoskrnl.exe, BSOD, Win 8 Pro, ThinkPad W530

Hi!

ntoskrnl is a windows process so is very unlikely to cause BSODs. Your BSODs point towards a faulty driver.

Your first BSOD in november looks like it was caused by your graphics card driver try updating to the latest drivers on the nvidia website.

It may also be worth running driver verifier.

Hi,The fingerprint scanner LED on my W530 died. Here are the symptoms: - Fingerprint reader is not recognized in BIOS -I deleted the driver and its files from device manager but the TouchChip finger print processor reinstall itself.  The properties for the device is:Device Type: biometric devicesManufacturer: AuthenTec (I think the company has since been acquired by Apple)Location:  Port_#0003.Hub_#0004 - The following message shows up in the event viewer:  "Driver Management concluded the process to install driver tcwbfadv.inf_amd64_5a48bf8b68a239ce\tcwbfadv.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_147E&PID_2020\6&387E66F3&0&3 with the following status: 0x0." - ThinkVantage fingerprint software doesn't find the fingerprint reader I concluded that this is a HW issue with the scanner.  I ordered a new fingerprint scanner for someone in China which looked just like the original (one never knows).  I installed the new scanner to no avail - no LED.  The cable connected to the fingerprint scanner is shared with the mouse. Since the mouse is working OK, there is a good chance that the cable is OK but I cannot be sure. Anyone has any ideas on where I should go next?  It appears that the TouchChip fingerprint processor is working but something else is failing.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W530 that I bought new in 2013. I had the choice of Win 7 or 8. I chose Win 7 Professional 64-bit. I recently had the hard drive replaced with a SSD. I had the computer person install Win 7 Professional 64-bit from a Microsoft install disk, not from the Lenovo Recovery disks that came with the machine.I am having a problem with the laptop and so I am in the process of making sure all drivers specific to Lenovo are installed. There are two download choices for "Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) Update Module KB2459268 (WW) - ThinkPad". Hello, In September 2015(a few days after end of warrenty ), my W530 suddenly refused to power on(turns off after 1/2s) or charge, so I took out the battery, disassembled it, and of course disconnected the CMOS battery, then after waiting several hours, I reassembled the computer and it worked for about 2 days without an issue, but then it failed again...Since that I could always bring it back to life(till reboot or shutdown) by "just" waiting. So my guess is that there is a faulty capacitor somewhere in the powermanagement part. Any Ideas, where to search, or how to fix it(perhaps I am not the only one)? p.s. I have an 100mhz oscilloscope, soldering iron etc.

Just got a new Lenovo Thinkpad W530, swapped out HDD for a Corsair Force GT 180GB SSD, and now using the HDD as a secondary drive in place of my DVD drive. I also installed 16gb of Corsair Vengeance memory along with 8gb system memory (did this prior to the hard drive swap, and wasn't getting any BSOD).

It seems to get the Kernel_data_inpage_error after the computer has been shut down for more than 10 minutes.

Another strange thing I noticed, was upon doing a fresh install of windows 8 with my recovery media, I noticed the C drive (SSD), seemed to have had an extra 20 GB all of the sudden used up after restarting and getting BSOD.

After doing another install of windows, I checked the hard drive space and I was at 125 GB free space (166GB total usable space on the SSD), then after shutting it down for the night, and turning it back on in the morning, I got the BSOD and also checked the SSD to see if the space had changed, sure enough it had gone down to 101GB of free space (I had not installed any programs or drivers yet), which doesn't add up when calculating the space on each folder in my C drive. Any idea what's going on here?

Here is the SF Diagnostic report, any help would be greatly appreciated! Laptop seems to be working fine other than BSOD on start up, and the mysterious missing 20(ish)GB of space on my SSD.

Issues with this device:

USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller ROOT\UOIP_BUS_DRIVER\0000 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.

Find it in Device Manager. Right click and select "Uninstall". When done uninstalling, reboot the system and see if the device returns as a problem or not.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!

Hi,  I currently have W530 which wouldn't turn on at all. Below is a little bit of background: Few months ago, the laptop started to turn off all of sudden and turn back on without any particular reason and I could never find anything in Event viewer. After sometimes, it started to do it more frequently and it came to stage where it wouldn't even go past the windows login and shut down and turn back on with continous cycle. For the above issue, I tried to plug a recovery usb stick to repair the computer and it worked fine for sometimes however it started doing the above again and at the end it would just lit up the power button for a second when I press it but nothing happens afterwards. Just before this issue, laptop passed lenovo diagnostic test aswell.Looking at this blog https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/ThinkPad-W530-not-turning-on-at-all/td-p... , I disassembled the laptop to try and push the power jack near motherboard with no luck and even unplugged and re-plugged the CMOS battery cable. It would just turn on for few seconds and turn off completly and wouldn't turn back on (just power button light for a second). I have even tried the static charge release workaround (press and hold power button for 30 seconds while battery is out and turn it back on with battery/power plug attached) as well but no luck. I have also taken out the RAM and Hard drive as well to see if there is a hardware issue. I am now left with a ... Read more

A:Thinkpad W530 wouldn't turn on

Hello,

Given that this model is now seven years old, it may be difficult to troubleshoot exactly what happened.  The progressive nature of the problem makes me think it could be some kind of component failure, perhaps relating to the power or thermal subsystems.  But it could also be an issue with the CPU itself (rare, but it happens) or the motherboard.  I would suggest starting with the more inexpensive to replace and easy to troubleshoot things.

Have you tried replacing the CMOS/RTC backup battery?

What about testing the RAM and HDD or SSD in another computer?

Regards,

Hello all, I am looking to buy a ThinkPad W530 from eBay.  I found two options for CPU from all the online listings, Intel i7-3520M or i7-3740QM.  I am not asking about the differences about the two CPUs, which I can find online.  My questions are: Can we tell which edition is newer/later?  Or, does the difference result from customizations? I would like to choose the newer model, in the hope that it is also the better or improved version. Any insider's info will be appreciated.

They are both 4 - 5 years old.  The i7-3520m is 2 core and the i7-3740QM is 4-core.  The 3520 has a faster clock speed and will run faster single-threads.  The 3740 will run more threads at once.  The dual-core can address 16GB of memory (2X8gb) The quad core cpu will address 4X8gb

Yes, you can buy an ultrabay caddy and put a HDD or SSD there as well, the drives in the caddy can be up to 12.5mm heigth. A caddy look like this: click here

In my opinion it would make more sense to put the SSD in the internal bay and the HDD in the caddy, not the other way around.I

Hello- This is the first time I've needed to post here - I wouldn't say I'm an advanced user, but I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing. So please bear with me. My specific problem is that, seemingly following one of the attached (screenshot) windows updates, I can no longer use the Fn+F keys properly. Some of them do work (I can adjust brightness, hibernate), but I cannot for instance open WiFi controls (Access Connections) with Fn+F5, Communications Utility with Fn+F6, or connect to a projector with Fn+F7. Also, the accompanying screen overlay isn't right. The manual volume adjust button doesn't show the volume change on screen (same for mute button); neither does Fn+F8/F9 for brightness; ditto for CAPS-LOCK key, so I don't know whether caps lock is on or not! But these buttons/key-combinations do at least work. I have spent a long time trying to fix this following for example treads like below: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/E530-special-keys-FN-F4-FN-F5-etc-are-n... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T530-Fn-keys-and-quot-On-Screen-Display-... Updating HotKeys feature integration manually did not help. However, when I did this via a full scan with Lenovo Solutions Centre it did something (e.g. screen overlay came back briefly for brightness controls Fn+F8/F9, but has since gone again after re-starting). But still nothing for opening WiFi controls, Communication Utility, caps lock,... Read more

Whenever any problem tries to use it (skype, audacity), it always shows a quick activity (about 0.5 ms), always with the same from - and nothing more, ever. I have installed drivers from realtec, and the drivers from lenovo, nothing works. I done wha said in all other forumes (sound->manage sound devices), - disable listening, disable all featues or enable, as well as chagne settings to the highest availble. Nothing helps.  This has been so since I bought this computer about a month ago.  OS: Windows 7 64bitPlease help

A:Thinkpad W530 problem - Microphone not working

Hi, matanm

I would recommend making sure that you have the latest BIOS for your machine installed, as an older BIOS can sometimes cause issues with the microphone. The latest update for your BIOS can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Read more

Hello. I'm James.  Specs:W530i7-3740Intel HD 4000 Graphics Nvidia Quadro K2000m Graphics12gb Samsung ramSamsung 850 evo 500gbHitachi 500gb HDD / HDD caddy The GPU in question is gtx 1060 6gb of some brand name and configuration. The prices and availability are so far and few between that I haven't decided on a exact model. I was wondering if anyone could help me indentify what PCI/PCIe and Express Card slots I have. I have looked on Lenovo's part lookup page but I'm so new to this I don't honestly know what exactly I am searching for. Pardon my ignorance. I intent to try a DIY eGPU setup since I do infact have the Express card reader. I know I could use a PCIe setup and remove the wifi card but that seems like alot more of a hassle than a "plug and play" style setup from the Express card slot even though I will lose performance. Lets be honest it's still going to be better than the HD4000 or K2000m. I have read briefly about the whitelist on the BIOS and may have a workaround but I am still researching so any experience into the matter would be greatly appreciated. Right, so any help with maybe getting part numbers and other specfications is much appreciated. Again, pardon my ignorance. Some sites regading the matter. http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookuphttps://egpu.io/forums/https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/9474-15-lenovo-w530-gtx9504gbpsc-ec2-pe4c-v30-wi... Thanks everyone! The correct HDMI input appears in the list on the TV screen, but when I select it a 'no signal' warning shows up.What option/driver should I check?Carlo

Hello! I bought a second hand Lenovo Thinkpad W530 with a 500 GB hard drive and 32GB mSata SSD drive. The mSATA-drive contains the OS (Win 8.1), something I think was set up by the previous owner. This obviously doesn't work well, as the C:-drive is constantly filled to 90%, although we do not use it for anything but the OS. As a result, the PC often runs out of memory, slows down or won't show new webpages when a new tab is opened.  Looking for a way to solve this problem, I decided to buy a bigger mSATA-drive (Kingston SSDNow UV500 - Solid state drive - encrypted - 240 GB - intern - mSATA - SATA 6Gb/s - 256-bit AES - Self-Encrypting Drive (SED), TCG Opal Encryption 2.0 (SUV500MS/240G) Modelnr.: SUV500MS/240G) and a mSATA - USB3 SSD enclosure for the cloning. Am I on the right path? I also have the option to clone the C-drive, and copy the files from the HDD to a 2,5" SSD and replace the HD with this, as we use only about 100GB of space altogether. However, I tried this, but the SDD was not recognised when I changed the boot sequence. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Cheers, Niels

Hello, I just replaced the power jack on my W530 Thinkpad but now when I plug in the adapter my thinkpad turns on automatically, without me hitting the power on button, and the only visible light is the power button. Here is a video I uploaded demonstrating this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/n9gkjykywoc4h77/20170124_014353.mp4?dl=0 As you can see there is nothing on the screen and when I hook it up to my monitor nothing is visible there either. I tried double checking each piece of hardware to make sure I put things back together correctly and couldn't find any mistakes. Any ideas?

I have had my W530 for about 3 month and the rear yellow USB port just stopped working a few days ago. I have recovered the whole system to factory status and updated the BIOS but the USB port is still not working. I tried several devices, it seems like that the USB has no power at all. The LED on the flash drives do not come on when I plug it in. All the other USB ports are working. Has anyone encountered the same problem before? Any help is appreciated.

Yesterday, 07 August 2018, I replaced a non-backlit keyboard w/a backlit keyboard (English/US) FRU: 04Y0528. The keyboard worked until a few minutes later when "uncontrolled scrolling" occurred on everything that I tried to access. It scrolls to the bottom and also when I access any menu/program it scrolls up and down and/or scrolls to the bottom. All my updates are current both for Lenovo and Windows 10 Pro version 1803 build 17134.191. 1. I have turned off all "live tiles"2. Personalization, Colors, Auto pick an accent color from my background is NOT checked.3. I do not use a wireless mouse or external keyboard Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.

Hello community,  you probably discussed this particular workstation and panel already over an over in the past. Actually I noticed that there seems to be some real expertise about the "AUO B156HW01 V.4" panel in this forum, so I eventually decided to sign up and now hope you can perhaps help me too.I am currently searching for a refurbished notebook around 600 Euro (700$) max and my main purpose for it will be photo editing and graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite) and in the future also some Cinema 4D and CAD. So a rather decent display with a high gamut is especially important for me. Of course my budget limits me there a bit, but I'd rather go for the best display than the most powerful machine within that budget. After some research I ended up taking a closer look at workstations, especially the Lenovo W series and the HP Elitebook. As the latter has the best display with the Dreamcolor option, it is unfortunately out of my budget anyway, so I researched more about Lenovos Workstations and ended up focusing on the W530 with the AUO B156HW01 V.4 Panel. This panel allegedly covers 95% of AdobeRGB and got a lot of praise in forums. But also some criticism (oversatured, red tint, hard to calibrate properly). So digging up more information about that display, I found out that the W520 uses it too, but I wondered that there were so many deviating display-test results between the W520 and the W530. They seem to handle and dis... Read more

I bought a used W530 with 24 gigs ram, i7 cpu.  I've installed all the latest drivers on lenovo's support.  Everything seems to work great except the touchpad (touchpad did the same thing before I updated anything).  When sliding my finger across sometimes it just stops and the cursor won't move again until I firmly tap twice, almost like the cursor is frozen in place and the taps wake it up.  Other times the cursor will jump to the other side of the screen when scrolling.  Sometimes it clicks with the slightest touch, and other times I have to firmly tap. I've read most of the issues on this forum but they don't sound like this problem.  This feels like a flakey touchpad.  I see on ebay you can get the touchpad sticker/cover, the entire palmrest with ribbon cables, or the touchpad sensor board.  If I can't fix the issue with software, is the problem most likely the palmrest piece or the sensor board?  I'm assuming the sensor board is what the palmrest plugs into somewhere by the motherboard, but I'm not sure as I haven't torn into it yet and the maintenance manual doesn't show that sensor board. I'm going to attempt disabling the trackpoint in the driver as I just found that suggestion on the forum and see if that fixes the touchpad.  If that solves the problem, is there a hardware fix for the trackpoint or is that just getting a replacement keyboard?  I doubt that will be the issue since the trackpoint and all... Hi, I am currently using the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W with 2 x 1920x1080 displays @ 60Hz a display. I am doing so by connecting one of the monitors to the DVI-D output on the docking station and 1 to a USB to HDMI converter (I was having issues with the VGA for some reason). I also use the laptop display as a third screen in the setup. What I am looking to do is purchase 3 x 2560x1440 displays and have the docking station power all 3 of these @ 60Hz. I understand that I can only use 2 display ports to do this so I intent to add a USB32DPPRO to achieve this, however my question is will they all run @ 60Hz. I have found this link which confirms I can run 2 displays at the resolution I'm after, but it does not mention anything about the refresh rate. https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/migr-76767.  I'm just a little confisued as when you start looking at refresh rates on 4K for example, it says you can only run 1 screen @ 60Hz and if you add another screen the refresh rate drops to 30Hz for both. This is when used with the ThinkPad Workstation Dock 230W. More information here https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/acc100247. If anybody could help demistify this that would be great! I am using a NVIDIA Quardo K1000M as my GPU and the Inter(R) HD Graphics 4000 for the onbaord graphics. It's probably worth nothing that if I can get all 3 monitors to run @ 60Hz and 2560x1440 I would not need to use the lap... Read more

Hey everyone, I think this is easily possible, but I wanted to confirm before pulling the trigger on another monitor. I currently am using my W530 with a Dell U2713H external monitor (2560x1440) and would like to add another one. Would the W530 be able to handle Mini DP to DP into the Dell U2713H and then DP out to DP in of a second Dell U2713H. I think this is a common daisychaining method, but wanted to confirm. Please share your setup if it is at all informative. Thanks for the help!
