American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

Q: American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

Ok, so before you reply, please make note that I didn't build this pc myself, it was custom built in a company by order. I don't know a thing about inside of computer. Of course, I know the main parts, but repairing or tinkering, nooo.

Pc specs:
Intel i5-2400 3.1 Ghz Quad Core
8 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 550ti Graphics Card.

The thing is, in my opinion, this pc is properly cooled and built, because I've been having it for almost a year and I've never had this problem before.

So okay, I got back home and turned on my pc. And I noticed a problem. My video was slow. Videos on youtube were slow and choppy, I tried like moving windows and their movement was slow. At first I thought its a video card or monitor problem and I tried rebooting my pc. When I pressed restart, before booting windows, the computer shows the window:
American Megatrends

(Computer info)

CPU over temperature error!
Press F1 to continue setup.
Is it really overheated? Because I've never had this problem before, I didn't had it the other day I was using it and I'm using it a lot. What to do? I really can't just open up the case and see the problem, I'm not that experienced.

Preferred Solution: American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

Why can't it be overheating? Things do break, or come loose, and they can get dirty too.

Download HW Monitor and see what the CPU/Core temps are, for that matter check all the temps. Best would be to post a screen shot of HW Monitor.

HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

If the computer is truly overheating then it will need to be opened up to see why.

When I start my computer up. I see the following message:

CPU: Intel (R) Core(TM) 17-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
USB Device total: 0 Drive, 1 keyboard, 1 mouse, Hubs
Detected ATA/ATAPI Devices...
SATA Port: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200S
Port 6: ST3500630AS
S.M.A.R.T Status Bad, Backup or Replace
Press F1 to Run Setup

What does this mean?

A:American Megatrends

This means that the hard drive is about to fail. S.M.A.R.T is a utility that monitors the health of the hard drive and reports any potential problems, like an early warning system. When it says "S.M.A.R.T Status Bad" This is not a good thing. Does it give you an option to bypass and get to Windows? If so backup your important data.

This morning I went to turn my computer on and got the message below. It's saying something about the USB devices, but I don't have any devices plugged in to the computer. I know that one of my USB ports is damaged and has been for awhile. Could this be causing it? If so, how would I remove it? Do I have to take the computer apart? Is it something I can do on my own? I am not very computer literate.

Hi, as you say it is likely to be a damaged USB port.

My computer is working fine, excpet for one minor detail...

My Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe doesn't like my new 4GB of 800MHz ram. The ram is fine. XP 32 bit runs fine with only 2-3 GB in use, but Vista Ultimate 64-Bit is terrible, running at least 5 times slower and maxing out the processor and freezing a couple of minutes just to open Fire Fox. I am considering buying a new mobo, but I heard there is another way.

Some people have gone into their BIOS and enabled an option called "Memory Remapping," which fixed the problem. The catch is: My BIOS doesn't have that option for some odd reason... Surprise, surprise after my cellphone provider had to send 2 SIM cards to me for the phone to work and my External Backup HD had failed just a couple of months after I bought it(Goodbye 100+ Gigabytes of data).

I checked the manual that went with my mobo, and the bios version in the manual and on my computer were EXACTLY the same! Though, the menu in the Manual had many more options than did the one on my computer. So, I go to Asus's website and download the latest official (not beta) driver. Then, I pop in the Asus CD that came with my mobo and tried to run "Asus Update". Every time I run this I get an error message: "Unable to create NT driver... Read more

A:American Megatrends message unknown

OK, you are running the system overclocked. Not too much however it shows both ram and cpu running faster than normal. It is probably the board failing however the very first thing I would do would be to return ALL settings to stock. Clear RTC [cmos] to return settings to stock. Once you clean RTC, pull the pw connectors from ALL drives; both hd and optical. Now disconnect any usb device ie printer, scanner, external drive, etc.

Pw ON and see if the board will successfully complete POST.

Remember there is NO safe overclock. All overclocking entails some degree of risk.

The support page for that model indicates it came with Windows 8.1, which means it should also have UEFI BIOS.  Depending on the way the Ubuntu Live was added to the flash drive, it might not be done correctly.  See this page on Ubuntu and UEFI BIOS.  BTW: it needs to be a 64bit installhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

Hello, experts!
For the past few weeks, I've been seeing the AMI screen everytime I turn on my computer. It wasn't like that before, so I have no clue why it's showing up now. I pressed f1 and f2 numerous times and went through every session, still I cannot find the problem of why it keeps appearing during startup.

Since I just received a new computer this April, I'm not very familiar with the new AMI then I was with Windows XP. Instead, I used screen-shot to show my AMI screen. I hope this will help!

A friend of mine came to me with this problem. He has an American Megatrends motherboard and can't get it to boot past the Checking NV RAM.. part

here is what is on the screen when it freezes
American Megatrends
TYAN TSUNAMI AT V2.00.01 012520001800
Intel 440BX AGPset

P II, 400Mhz
Checking NVRam..

then down at the bottom of the screen it says

What we have done:
Switched PCI video card to another PCI slot
Disconnected everything but the floppy/cd/harddrive
Reseated the RAM, switched RAM slots, and tried different RAM modules with ones that are known to work.

He says 1 time it made it past checking NVRam (where it counts the RAM) and then froze when it first said hit del to enter BIOS.

Edit: He also remembered that when he first booted he had 3 RAM modules in and all it would say is American Megatrends with the logo and that was it, so he removed 2 and left 1 and thats where we are now.

2nd Edit: When I asked him what happens when he tries it with no RAM he says "nothing, it beeps".

Anyone have any ideas on what to try next? Could it just be that the motherboard is bad where the RAM fits?

A:Problems getting to POST on American Megatrends MOBO

Alright - I just recieved word that it now works. Which leads me to believe that even though it appeared we had the RAM set properly it wasn't.
Now it boots into Win98 and just gives the usual errors when you don't have proper drivers installed and such, I'm going to let him work on that on his own because I think he has a pretty good handle on getting that set straight.
(he pulled this PC together from scrap parts so even getting this thing to run is a plus for him)
I'll post back with any other motherboard related problems that might crop up.

Here's the problem: When I start my computer, I'll get a black screen with a bunch of text with "American Megatrends" as the header. The screen is unusual, and on the bottom it says "CPU fan error!, press F1 to continue." If I simply press f1 and ignore it, my computer eventually shuts off, and restarting my computer doesn't get my display back, I have to reset my cmos.

Things that I've tried: Now, I had this problem before, and my computer doesn't have a cmos switch, so I had to take out the battery for a couple minutes, and that worked.
Today I woke up to have the same problem. Only this time, when I took out the battery and put it back, the problem persisted.
So I tried entering my system setup and set "CPU fan speed" to ignore, that still did nothing.

So I'm aggravated, annoyed and helpless. Any help would be appreciated.

As the date in wrong, the CMOS battery is likely dead.

You can press F2 to run setup, save, and exit and the PC should boot. But you will likely get this screen every time until the battery is replaced.

hi folks. good day to you all. my name is max. i can install windows and manage basic troubleshooting related to software without any problems. a couple of months back i installed windows xp on my friends computer and it was working fine but a month after installation, when he booted the comp up, he would get the startup options msg (safe, normal and so on) instead of windows booting up normally. when he tried to boot it up in any mode, the windows xp loading logo would just appear and windows just kept restarting. i thought it might be a software problem ,so i made a fresh install of xp and it was working fine . but now once again the same problem seems to have occured. this screen pops up when he starts the comp. i have included the image he sent me (its a bit blurry but you can make out whats on it). i searched about it and as you can see in the image, the problem seems to be about CMOS settings. now, from what i have learned so far after researching about it is that its either the CMOS battery that has lost its charge, died, or maybe its just a CMOS (or bios? not sure) settings problem. can you guys please take a look at the image and tell me what exactly is wrong and what steps i would have to take to fix his problem? thank you in advance.

I've been having this problem for over a week now. This is what I already tried:

- Bought new memory sticks
- Memtest86+ for 8 passes, no errors
- Furmark for 3 hours, average 15 fps @ 80?C
- Format, upgrade to Win 10, tested with another HDD, still crashed
- HWinfo shows good values for the power supply
- Tested with another CPU and default mem clock speed

I just don't know what else to do. Is there any possibility this whole thing is due to driver problems? I suspect it could be a MOBO or video card fault but is there a way to confirm?

Thanks in advance.

Hello TSG,

Uhm.. not sure how to start this but.. here goes.
My one year old desktop is slowly dying.
First it was the video card, then the PSU, then the monitor and now the CPU.
I'm not really sure what's wrong with it, so I've come here in search for help.
I have a 350W PSU and a Intel Core2Duo E6400 processor, motherboard is ASUS P5B-Deluxe and nothing is overclocked.
The computer sometimes boots up, and then shuts down halfway through the session unexpectedly, and sometimes beeps a few times rapidly and shows a CPU Over Temperature error. And then shuts down.

I've taken out the CPU fan and the heatsink out of the computer for cleaning but that hasn't seemed to do much besides creating a mountain of dust.
I've also taken the processor out after it shut down, it's hot to the touch but not burning.
Another possibility would be the PSU not having enough power, 350w, but I'm not sure about this because I just replaced the PSU a few months ago and it worked fine, until yesterday, that is.

Well, that's all the information I can think of typing, thanks in advance.

A:CPU Over Temperature Error and Overclocking Failed! Error

Try removing the thermal paste on the cpu and heatsink and reapply now stuff, pop it back on and give it a go.

My computer has been running fine up until now (3 years since upgrade).
I think it is a virus. My computer keeps re-booting itself for no paticular reason. I end up walking away from computer. When I come back, I press the power button and sure enough 10-15mins later, it shuts itself down again. I don't think the CPU is really over-heating. I think its a bug/virus/malware/spyware of some description. Both internet and computer itself is running noticably slower than usual. If anyone could help me out that would be heaps appreciated.

Hello all,
I received this error twice today for the first time in ten years
(CPU Over Temperature Error! Press F1 to Resume)
I am using w7 32bit and I also checked to see if all my fans were working and they where.
What does this mean and or what should i do about it?
Thank you all so much.

A:CPU Over Temperature Error!

if i read this right, your pc is over 10 years old? and you have checked that the fans are running, so i assume that dust is not an issue. What it maybe in this case is the thermal paste on the cpu being 10 years old has degraded and is not working efficiently. It is an easy fix, but will require you buying some thermal paste, its not expensive and can be bought at any computer store. you will need to remove the heatsink (fan over the cpu) and remove the cpu. then wipe off the old paste (which by now will be dry, make sure you get it all off, and make sure NOT to touch the pins on the underside of the CPU) then put on a small amount of paste and smooth it in using a lint free cloth. then assemble it all again. give that a go.

I recently did a build with a Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard, Intel E8400 Dual core. When I have used it after a short time and restart it, during the post I get some beeps and the message " CPU Overtemperature error. F1 to resume" hitting F1 loads up windows without problem. When I use Asus's Probe software it shows that the CPU temp is running anywhere between 69 - 85. In the BIOS hardware monitor it shows a temp between 90 - 100. I have a feeling that the heatsink may not be properly installed because when I installed it I had trouble telling whether or not all the locking posts had engaged properly. I was a little nervous putting so much pressure on the board to lock the mounting posts. I suspect that I will need to reinstall the heatsink. My question is do I need to clean off the thermal compound on both items and put fresh on or can I just loosen the posts and re insert them? I did the build 5 days ago. Also I have not gone out and checked for a new version BIOS as yet. Should this be done regardless of the heatsink reinstall and if so should I try that first before reinstalling the heatsink? Thanks for the help!

Hello all...first time poster here and I'm hoping you all can help me out...

So here is my situation...I am a long time computer user and tinkerer, but I am building a machine for the first time...here are the components...

Motherboard:* ASUS P5AD2-E Deluxe
CPU:* Intel PentiumŪ 4 530 Processor Prescott 3.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, Socket 775, 1MB Cache
Memory:* Kingston KVR533D2N4K2/1G 1GB Kit DDR2-533 PC2-4200 Memory
Hard Drive:* Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JD 250GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer
PSU:* Enermax EG425P-SFMA24P 420W Power Supply
Case:* Enermax Voltron

So when I go to powerup for the first time (I have not yet installed an operating system), I get a POST message which says "CPU Over Temperature Error" and the machine shuts down.

I went into BIOS and the temperature for the CPU read something like 112 degrees Celsius (which seems obscenely high).

The heatsink fan is working properly, and I reinstalled the heatsink to make sure it has a snug fit. The thermal tape which was installed when I purchased the cpu is still there, but it has smeared some.

Any idea what is going on?

Try AVG anti-virus, Spybot S/D, or Ad-aware. Run them in safe mode. When booting, press F8(generally) for boot options and pick safe mode.

I have a newly built system, (May 2013). It was working fine for sometime BUT recently on and off I get "CPU RPM excessive temperature 65+ warning and " DETECTED APA ... SATA PORT 1 .. FAN ERROR" and immediately the system shuts-down automatically. When I open the case I can see the fan is working fine. I am highly worried about the temperature warning whether this will effect the MB.

I give below info. related to my system:

MB Asus M5A97 R2.0
Processor AMD FX -6100 Six-Core Precessor 3.30 GHz
Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s 250GB (ST3250318AS ATA Device)
RAM (Installed) 8.00 GB
OS 64 Bit - Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1

Any advice will be highly appreciated

A:CPU Temperature and Fan error warning

The shutdown is the motherboard protection circuit.

You may simply need to replace the cpu fan, it could be failing/faulty. And just because it's spinning, doesn't mean it's actually working properly.

Is the heatsink/fan free of dust and dirt? Is the room temp excessively warm?

When my computer crashes on reboot it gives a CPU over temperature error. When I go to my BIOS to read the temperature records my CPU reads a constant 60C, well below its TjMax. It has been happening maybe once a day or every other day for five days now. Another reason I believe it's showing a false reading is that it's never happened when I'm doing something resource intensive. If my CPU is overheating wouldn't it make more sense to receive an error when I'm rendering a video or graphics editing? Side note: I have not recently moved my setup or changed anything physically with my computer. I did however just recently update my graphics card driver. Figured I should throw that info in.

Specs -

CPU - AMD FX 8150
MOBO - ASUS Crosshair V Formula
RAM - G. Skill Ripjaws 16G
Video - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
PSU - Generic 1000W Unit
OS - Windows 7 Home Edition

Edit: Any kind of alternate opinion or ideas on how to move forward would be wonderful! I'm completely stumped at this point.
