Traveling with US model T480

Q: Traveling with US model T480

I have a US model T480 and will be traveling to the UK. In the past, I've taken my MacBook Air and Dell XPS to this country and was simply able to purchase an adapter and it seemed the power brick did the conversion to the right volts. However, this is a new laptop and I want to make sure this will be the same case for my Thinkpad. So, has anyone taken their Thinkpad to the UK and have things work fine or should I just buy a converter? Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone.I've got a problem with my laptop T480 and AG40 docking.I'm using 2 external monitor on docking (one connected on Display port and the other on VGA port) on Windows 10 x64,Until yesterday everything worked fine, but today I found this issue... When OS is ready I see both monitors in monitor settings but VGA screen is blank. If I remove and reconnect VGA cable it works againbut if I lock my PC and unlock after 5 mins, I see again VGA screen blank.And...again...If I remove and reconnect VGA cable it works again.I reproduced this issue this way...- All monitors are fine- I press WIN+CTRL+SHIFT+B- VGA monitor is recognized but it's blankAny suggestion ?

We are traveling from California to Alabama and wonder if I can leave in the car at night, so as not to take in and out of hotels. Will the cold harm it? I know once we get there not to turn it on till it has had time to acclamate to room temp., Is this right? Is it ok ?

A:Traveling with 23 " Envy.

If by cold, you mean below freezing temperatures, leaving it in the car is not such a good plan.   Extreme cold has very bad effects on LCD screens. The condensation which would appear inside the device if you turned it on after freezing, without letting it warm up, could destroy it.

My friend has a Dell D610 laptop that has Windows XP Home installed.

It has just recently developed a wierd problem ......The cursor travels all by itself and actually gains speed after
a while. I tried installing a mouse but it is still doing the same thing.

Can someone please tell me what is going on??

A:Traveling Cursor

It's a problem with the touchpad or the stick pointerk/eraser pointer that's in the middle of the keyboard, you can try cleaning the touchpad/trackstick(the rubber piece comes off) or if that doesn't work you can disable the touchpad or the track stick pointer and use only an external mouse.

Go to the Dell site and install the latest Alps software from the Mouse section: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/latitude-d610
Then using the Alps control panel in the system tray or from the Windows Control Panel you should be able to disable either or both the stick pointer and/or the touchpad. Start with the Stick pointer as that's usually the problematic one.

Planning to go to Europe next month and take my new Yoga 2 11 with me. Do I need to use a "Converter" to connect to the electrical system over there. I have read somewhere that if I use the power connector that came with the PC, it will automatically convert the electric from 220 to 110. Just wanted to get some independent verification before I do that.

A:Traveling with a Yoga 2 11

Hello and welcome,
With modern electronics you generally don't need a converter.  Your AC power brick/wall-wart probably says something like 100-240VAC/50-60Hz so it's "universal".  Please verify.
You will likely need a (mechanical) plug adapter to allow you to plug into available wall power.  This will vary depending on which contries you visit.  There are some more-or-less universal adapters available.

What do people do when they have 2 email accounts setup in outlook. One for an office and one for there dsl account. The Outgoing mail server has to be changed everytime they go to the office and then changed again when they go home.
Is there a default outgoing mail server that could be used?

A:What is the solution for traveling laptops

I am confused why you need to change the outgoing server based on the laptop's location. I have set-up laptops for a few people at work. They all are using Outlook 2003. They were all set up with one or two different e-mail addresses for work as well as one or two personal e-mail addresses to work with their home Cable of DSL services and G-mail or AOL mail.

There is no need for them to switch outgoing mail servers. All of the work e-mail accounts receive and send mail through the hosted company mail server no matter where the laptop is being used. All of their home/personal e-mail messages are sent and received through the mail servers for those accounts no matter where the laptop is being used.

When they reply to received e-mail, the reply is automatically set to use the same e-mail address and mail server used to receive the original message. When they are composing a new e-mail message, the menu area of the composition screen shows which account is currently selected to use for sending and can be changed to any other account.

Hi guys,

I'm sure you get questions about bittorrent just about daily but I think this one is kind of unique. I'm traveling, in Mexico, with my laptop, so all my connections are wifi. I doubt that it makes a difference that I'm in Mexico but maybe it could. All the connections I've had so far have been pretty fast, all cable or DSL (through a wifi router though). I am using uTorrent. The first 2 places I stayed at my bittorrent was really fast and I had no problems. However, the last 2 places I've stayed at the speeds have been ridiculously slow, <1Kb/s, so that practically nothing is downloaded at all. Some of the time nothing is being dowloaded, although at the bottom it says that my download speed is 1 or 2 kb/s. At the last place I stayed my upload speed was better, about 20kb/s, but the place I'm at currently it is the same as my download speed. I have the green check at the bottom of uTorrent that means my network is working as it should be, and when I run the tests in the "Setup guide" through uTorrent it says that my port is open. Actually I just ran the test again, and although it says my port is open, the speed test failed because it says "A request to send or receive data was disallowed because the socket is..." and then it cuts off and I can't read the rest.

So anyway, that's the background. I've tried following some of the guides online that troubleshoot crappy speeds and I always get stuck because they usually say to check something on t... Read more

Hi. I am away from my home computer for a few months but I need to edit images for my website at internet cafes or at public computers. But they don't always let you download programs on their computers.

I am thinking of burning a CD with all my favorite programs (Paint Shop Pro, Text-to-Voice Reader, text-pad, and few other programs).

But before going to a shop to have all this burnt into CD, is there any technical reason why this would not work?

Thank you for ideas.

A:burning a CD with all my favorite programs when traveling

If you have the original setup files, you don't have a problem.

I don't think they would be too rapt in you uploading either.

What about grabbing a PII or PIII laptop and carry that with you.

In Aus, most cafes let you hook up for the same price as using theirs.

I have just purchased this marvelous notebook and can hook it up to a cable modem at home. But on the road, I assume it's DSL or Wi-FI and I'm at a loss how to get all three systems up on one notebook. Also, since I'm operating most in Chicago and Tucson, can someone tell me where to look to find a communications company that covers both markets and provides what I need?

A:traveling with a sharp actius mp30

Many hotels/motels are now offering free wired or wireless broadband. You shouldn't have to be concerned with their source (cable, satellite, DSL, ...). You can also find wireless (paid or free) at truck stops, restaurants, rest stops, libraries)

For wireless you will need a Wi-Fi PCMCIA (notebook) card or wireless USB adaptor, unless you already have integrated Wi-Fi.

For wired, it will be ethernet, and you will need a NIC. If you are connecting to your cable modem via ethernet, you have this and it is working and you know how to make it work.

Please excuse my stupidity, but I've just purchased my very first laptop and would love to take it on my upcoming vacation to Vegas. I have searched for three days trying to figure out what I need to make this possible.

My new laptop is an Everex VA4103M and comes with an internal 10base-T/100Base-TX LAN module. Other specs on the computer says it supports AP (Access Point) and integrates built in 802.11 b/g wireless LAN module

The computer has Windows Vista basic installed and at home I have Charter High Speed cable internet. So what do I need (or need to do) to be able to surf the internet while in Vegas?

Thank you so much!

Recently while traveling and working in my hotel on their Wi-Fi system, I went to send some email using my standard interface (Netscape 7.1 Mail and Newsgroups), and I got a dialog box message that said, that there had been a SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) error and the email server could not be located or communicated with - or something to that effect. And as a result, the message was unable to be sent.

I was able to circumvent this problem by shifting the message over to a web-based interface, but I was wondering what the problem was and how could this be overcome? Did I need to temporarily modify my outgoing server settings through the Netscape configuration interface? I'm guessing that's the answer, but since I don't travel a huge amount, there's never time to really fiddle around much in testing solutions. Any suggestions?

A friend, normally US-based, is traveling in Italy and is having some problems getting to the US-based web sites she needs.
For example, if she goes to a well known website like Netflix, (even if she clicks on the favorites bar or keeps writing www.netflix.com in,) it switches over to https://signup.netflix.com/global and won?t change back.
Has anyone had similar problems? Solutions?

A:Traveling overseas, trouble accessing websites

Yeah, that is a problem - especially in the bigger European countries. You always get the local flavors. I have the same problem in Germany and France. It takes some searching and the use of different search engines (Bing, Google, etc.).

Sometimes the webpages themselves have the option to switch to a different country. Be on the lookout for that.

Hi everyone.

Forgive me in advance for my ignorance but I don't get out much. My laptop is an HP Pavilion g6. I use Microsoft Security Essentials & Malwarebyte's; Windows firewall is activated.

I'm about to leave on a long vacation in a few days & want my new laptop be secure as possible as I'll be tapping into WIFI in many different places. All I want to do is use the internet on occasion. I'm not sure what the most secure options are.

Under Windows Advanced sharing options,

Home or Work
Network discovery is ON
File & printer sharing is ON
Public folder sharing in ON
Media streaming is ON
File sharing connections 128-bit
Password protected sharing ON
Home group connections Allow Windows to manage home group
Network discovery is OFF
File & printer sharing is OFF
Public folder sharing in ON
Media streaming is ON
File sharing connections 128-bit
Password protected sharing ON
Under Public I believe Public folder sharing & Media streaming should be changed to OFF.
Any suggestions?

Thats correct - turn OFF Public folder sharing and Media streaming.

I am sure that you can located one in China for fairly cheep, especially since they are probably made there anyway, and then upon your return, have the original replaced under warranty.     Ask around, there must be a computer outlet somewhere that sells parts that can locate one for you in China.    It may be a knockoff, but it will get you by for your trip, just make sure the voltage/amperage match that printed on the original.

Is there a knowledgeable networking type here that can advise what setup is required to print to the DELL 3100cn laser printer from the Internet

1. I have a Static IP for the Internet service
2. I've assigned the 3100cn a static IP on the LAN (
3. I'm using a linksys consumer router (WRT54P2 - Vonage VoIP router)
4. I know the laserjets like to work on LAN Port: 9100

Can I port forward port 9100 on the WAN router to the printer's LAN IP to access the printer?
Then use something like WANstaticIP:9100 to reach the 3100cn on the LAN?

This is the boundary of my knowledge.

All help appreciated!

A:Help please ! - DELL 3100CN - setup to print to it from Internet while traveling

Yes, that's what you can do if that Dell really listens on port 9100. And if you have a good router, then you can choose some other WAN port.

Mind you, you are opening your printer to anyone on the internet and someone just might want to send 5000 pages of garbage to your printer. Some kind of a print server that supports authentication, a VPN setup, or a simple SSH server would be a much better idea.

Pretty much any wifi-capable device that was connected to my previous comcast modem was infected by some sort of malware, including my win7 desktop, win8 laptop, and numerous android phones.
I called comcast technical support because the gateway password to the modem was changed, and none of their remote router access fixing tools could connect to it, and was unusable even after a fair amout of hardware resets.  I gave that modem back to comcast for a replacement and am now much more cautious with password protections, but all of the devices were still infected.  I eventually gave up on trying to fix my desktop, and instead copied all of my sentimental/important docs (along with the virus too, probably) to an external hard drive and factory reset my computer.  The malware itself is very sneaky, and copies itself into legitimate files, such as my Razer Taipan mouse, of which 200+ related Razer files are all trusted.  On pretty much all of my AV software there are many exclusions and trusted files and certificates added that limit my ability to remove anything, so I really just need some professional assistance here.
Thank you very much.

So according to this article, Wi-Fi in Asia is pretty dangerous? what soft of computer-based attacks would these be? And I never even heard of "burner devices" are these Chromebooks or something?
"For example, users traveling to Asia are routinely attacked on hotel networks – even before they get on the VPN. Some companies try to educate their employees on the dangers of using free Wi-Fi, be it a cheap coffee shop or a swanky hotel. But what should an employee do if they need to access their email or data? Other companies invest in burner devices that are ground up and thrown away after employees travel because of this inability to detect issues and untrustworthy devices, networks and sites"

A:nvidia riva tnt2 model 64/model 64 pro update wanted

Well...you can get the latest drivers for the card, but it won't help that much, because it's a TNT2...and PCI....

If you wanted to play newer games, you'd have to get a new video card....but if you're running a PCI video card right now, then it may not be worth it...check if you have an AGP slot, is should be above the PCI slots on the motherboard, and slightly offset from them...if you have an AGP slot, then that's good, because you could get a good video card...but if you don't, you'll probably be better off getting a whole new system rather than just upgrading the video.

Just to be clear, 32-bit is actually 16,777,216 colors, so its much more then 256 which is just 256 colors. So for 256 you need to lower the color depth not increase it.
