corrupted windows media player library

Q: corrupted windows media player library

Okay I seem to have managed to corrupt my windows media player library. It won't add any media files at all or videos. I click on commands and nothing seems to happen, except I can open and close the program. I am sorry to b vague, but yeah it's happened in the last 24 hours and I'm trying to figure how I can repair Windows Media Player.
At one point I've discovered I can't rip music through Windows Media Player either.

Hope this helps. Any suggestions on what could have caused the corruption and how I can fix this?

Cheers, any help would be most appreciative.

Preferred Solution: corrupted windows media player library

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Media library is corrupted - detected
keeps appearing every 10 minutes then goes away every other day! I use the troubleshooter and the fix doesn't work. Any suggestions?

A:Windows media library is corrupted

Where exactly do you see this appearing? Are you experiencing any actual problems with WMP's library?
I suggest that you try resetting the media library. First note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play counts, and possibly ratings too. Then, follow these steps:
- Reboot the PC.
- Go to Start, type services.msc in the Search field, and press Enter. In Services, find the
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. If its status is
Started, double-click the service and click
Stop.
- Go to Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in the Search field, and press Enter. This folder will open up in Windows Explorer.
- In this folder, delete the Media Player folder. If you can't see the folder, then it's probably hidden. Set Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and to show protected system files.
- Start WMP, your library will have been reset and will be rebuilt. Check if the issue still occurs.

I have some problems to sort the music files in the library. If there is an album with more than one disc, the sorting is like that: 1 - track 1 CD1 1 - track 1 CD2 2 - track 2 CD1 2 - track 2 CD2 etc... I would like more logical sorting like this: 1 - track 1 CD1 2 - track 2 CD1 etc... 1 - track 1 CD2 2 - track 2 CD2 etc... Do you see what I mean ? It seems that WMP/WMC doesn't sort using the "disc number" tag of the file (as it should be). Is there any way to sort it fine without creating 2 different albums for a 2 disc album ? Thank you.

A:Windows media player 12 / Windows Media Center - Multiple-Cds Albums sorting in library

The strange "subtitle" answer above is not really a valid notion given the lack of persistence.  When you step back, you see as koawmfot noted that this is really about the use of the "Set" field.  WMP does not and will not use the Set field to sort.  Instead it uses Album title as Shark noted. So the correct answer here would be to use the Album title field as the descriptive identifier.  If you really don't want to do this, you can use the track number such as by setting t1d1 to be 0101, t1d2 to be 0201, and so forth.  So those are the viable solutions, really. The problem with "Set" is that it doesn't fit well within the Explorer namespace / folder views.  This is consistent with the player storing one album in one folder, as opposed to dumping everything to one common folder - where you may have issues with filename collisions depending upon your naming scheme. As such it is not supported and is unlikely to be supported, sorry.

I am a music downloader.
It used to be that WMP12 would update the mp3 music folders to where the folder contents would read as follows:

01 'Track Name'
02 'Track Name'
03 'Track Name'

and so on...

This is no longer the case. WMP will not update my media library files, although it says it does. I have cleared the cache, cleared all .wmdb files, and have completely removed all 9000 plus songs and have them reloaded. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled WMP12 to no avail.

I can manually correct the files myself, but I shouldn't have to.
What setting am I missing that needs to be set so my media library will automatically update?

Thanks

Hello,

I am having a peculiar problem with Windows Media Player 9 series. Since its release I have used WMP9 problem free. Now I have encountered some mysterious problems with the Media Library.

One day I opened the Media Library to find nearly 1,000 songs not listed which were previously there. I have checked that the files still exist, and I have checked the WMP is monitoring the correct folders. Even more mysterious is that when I choose to list the music by Album only about a dozen albums show up, even though there is music in the library that is part and listed under hundreds of albums (And even the music that still shows up).

I have tried numerous ways to re-add the music to the library, and I have even reinstalled WMP9. I have not done an uninstall/reinstall because I am hesitant to lose the user ratings (I don't care much about Play Count though).

I have exhausted chat rooms, microsoft support, and many other support forums and have not found even one person with a similar issues. It would be absolutely wonderful if somebody on this board would be able to help me.

A:Windows Media Player Media Library Help

While not having the answer to your problem, if you wanted to try the uninstall re-install option, you could back up the media library database file first, then re-install it to get your ratings back if you wished. I don't know if this would be the way forward if there's something wrong with the library though as you'd be re-installing the one that is broke at the moment, just something to think about. The library information is held in this file

"C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player\CurrentDatabase_59R.wmdb"

before uninstalling/reinstalling windows media player though, have a look at what THIS guy has to say on the matter. There's not much he doesn't know about WMP.

Hi,

This might be easy enough to fix, but I certainly haven't been able to figure out how. I simply want my .wma lossless music library to be sorted by last name first, first name last. Being in my mid-40s, and being into music since I was 5, I just can't get used to David Bowie being under "D" instead of "B" or Frank Zappa under "F" instead of "Z" or The Carpenters under "T" instead of "C".

I've tried to solve this problem on and off for a long time, and tried to find the answer on line, without success. Recently, I've added a few albums, and have this issue as usual, but now even when I edit the artist in wmp it won't "take". I rename "Frank Zappa" to "Zappa, Frank", restart the application, and it's back under "F".

I'd just forget about even bothering with the program and finding something else, but I really like .wma lossless, plus it syncs much faster with my .wma/mp3 player than drag and drop.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

mas

Hi, I am having trouble with Windows Media Player 11. When WMP 11 opens, my Library including video and music are totally missing, as well as the playlists. It says “There are no items in this library yet - the Player is searching for digital media files in the background. Click Here to add files to the library now.” I click on this link and nothing happens. I still have all my music in the My Music Folder and I can play them, but they don’t add on to the library while they play. Most of my files are WMA and some are MP3 and always works with out a problem. I have done my own troubleshooting, first, I cleared the WMP Database, no effect, then I dragged and dropped all my music files in to WMP but this also had no effect. Then I reinstalled WMP 11 from the Microsoft website. I still can’t play music from the library and must go through the My Music Folder. This started to happen about 3 weeks ago. I hate it when things don't work! Please Help!

Hi,

I am having trouble with Windows Media Player 11 on WinXP Pro.

This was addressed in an older thread, but I had a very similar problem, and am still struggling to recover. I started having difficulty when ripping new CDs. They would constantly come up under "Unknown Album" if they were available at all. Shortly after that, my entire library disappeared. Fortunately, the underlying .WMA files are still there.

I attempted to reinstall WMP11 at least twice, and then happened upon a potential fix at the MS Knowledge Base... as well as on this forum:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925718

I did this, and re-loaded my library with some success. But the entire library - thousands of songs - is still coming up under "Unknown Album." If I look at any given song, and do a "Find Album Info" it goes out and updates all the information, but doing that for 5000 individual files would be... problematic.

Is there a setting that I am missing that would automatically update all the album information as I load the library?

ED: I should note that my .WMA files are stored on a 500GB Maxtor External HDD. Don't know if this makes a difference.

A:Windows media player 11 library gone... again?

The problem I am having is on my notebook computer. I have a desktop computer on the same network which has a copy of the library on its D: drive. That WMP11 library works just fine.

On the notebook computer, I attempted to run Tools >> Apply Media Information Changes. No response. The status window which pops up tells me that there is no response from the server, and that it is retrying.

On my desktop, again, on the same network, the same series of commands results in progress in this "Apply Changes" status window, and after a few minutes it says it's complete. I don't see that any changes were made, but I didn't look extensively.

What server is "Apply Media Information Changes" looking for, and why can't my notebook computer find it?

(BTW: Wrote this post on said Notebook, so yes, its internet connection seems to be working...)

Hi! I have had WMP11 installed for some time now (since the betas) I now have the final for XP (11.0.5721.5145) and was very happy with it until today when out of nowhere, my whole library just disappeared. I was doing nothing significant, nothing intensive, I just opened it and it wasn't there. So I rolled back to 10 and the library came back. So I then downloaded and installed 11 and it isn't there. When I click the 'click here to add files to the library now' and add some folders and hit 'ok' it just does nothing. Same happens when I add via F3 and the menu. How can I keep WMP 11 AND my library (AT THE SAME TIME ). Thanks, Silver

I have just changed the MP3 tags on a few songs in my very small library. I imagine that the changes will show up in WMP, but I don't know.

Can I force the changes to be recognized by WMP?

If I can't force them, will they ultimately show up in the library?

How long will that take, and is there some way I can keep track of it, other than opening WMP and looking at the library to see if the updates have been made?
(I see many old posts about problems like this. Maybe it's just a bug that has never been fixed.)

A:Windows Media Player - Library Update

Hi,

First, please let us know how you change the MP3 tags. Third party tools will not refresh the library. You can refer to

Updating Mp3 Tags?

To manually change the library, please try the following:

1. Click the Windows "Start" menu and click "All Programs." Click "Windows Media Player" to launch the media player.
2. Click the "Library" tab located on the top and click "Pictures" on the pop-up menu. Click "All Pictures" on the left panel under "Library." You should see all the pictures uploaded to
the WMP library.
3. Right-click the picture you want to remove and click "Delete." Specify whether you want to remove the picture only from the WMP library or if you want to remove it from the library and
the computer. Click "OK." To select multiple pictures, press and hold "CTRL" as you click each picture you want to remove. Right-click the selection and click "Delete." Select the delete option you want and click "OK."

I recently purchased a used computer with Vista x64 that seemed to be working fine until recently. However for some reason, whenever I try to play any files from the library or from a CD in WMP11 it automatically skips the track after 1-5 seconds. In addition to that, instead of going to the next track, it starts moving backwards up through my library. If I go to the Now Playing tab, I can see that for some reason it has added every single song in my library to the list. Has anyone ever seen a problem like this before?

A:Windows Media Player 11 can't play from library or CDs

I've never seen a problem like this before personally. If i were you i'd make sure my audio files weren't somehow corrupt and if they weren't then from there i'd reinstall windows media player.(don't forget to uninstall it first).

If that doesn't work i'd wait for someone with more experience with these kind of issues. If all else fails you could always resourt to using a different program to view your media. If your doing this just for audio that I highly recommend Media Monkey. There's a free and paid version but the free version is great so don't bother with the paid version unless you'd like the help the company for such great software =D
If your looking for audio and video media player I recommend VLC media players.I has a simple interface that should be easy to figure out and it can play many video formats which is very helpful

Hi guys,

I need to add some .MP4 files to my Windows Media Library, but WMP will not add them to the library.

I realize I can always convert the files, but I would like to experiment with this. I have heard that I need to download a MP4 DirectShow decoder pack in order to make this work.

From Xbox.com:
How can I get Windows Media Player 11 to stream MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 to my console?

A: By default, Windows Media Player 11 does not support MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264. You can either convert your MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 content to WMV, or you can install a third-party MP4 DirectShow decoder pack to import MPEG-4 part 2 and H.264 files into your library. Once they are in your library, they can be streamed to your console just like WMVs.

So, what all do I need to do to make WMP import .MP4 and h264 files into the library and read the tags? Thanks.

A:How can I add .MP4 files to my Windows Media Player Library?

Well, it sounds to me like you need to install a third-party MP4 DirectShow decoder pack. But since I don't use WMP for video (yet) I really can't say for sure.

Well about a week ago my WMP11 Library started acting funny. My entire library was deleted. When I went to add my songs back into the library it wouldn't let me. It won't save my "Monitored Folders" settings or let me create new playlists.

The only I can think of is that it's a virus. Or one of the anti-virus software programs is locking it down. I recently added AVG, Ad-Aware, and A-Squared at about the time it started acting up, but I'm not sure whether they caused the problems or if it was the spyware/viruses that were on my computer.

I've tried re-installing WMP. When I did a rollback to WMP9 the library seemed to work fine. After I re-updated it to WMP11 again it still wasn't working.

Any help guys?

I looked but could find no function to delete the library only something which said " when deleting files from library also delete from my computer" which I don't want to do. Is there a file that holds the library information that I could just delete forcing WMP to rescan the My Music folder, (or where ever my music files are kept)? I also have Fedora Core 6 (Linux). Its media player is called Rhythymbox. With it I can delete a file that forces Rhythymbox to scan the folder where my Linux music is kept. Can I do anything like that with WMP?

I have like thousands of little vocal clips that are from tutorials or something that got added to the Media Player Library. Now, is it possible to just empty the library and start over?

A:how does one delete files from the Windows Media Player library?

Do you want the library to contain clips that you play from now on or are they in a different location that you play from anyway?

*If you have Windows Media Player started, close it so the library file won't be in use.
*Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Index with Windows Explorer or using My Computer.
*Locate the wmlibrary...db file.

If you erase that your library will be deleted. If you want to create a new one, pointed to a location where your playble files are (elsewhere)

*Start Windows Media Player and hit F3 once it has started up.
*Enter the location that you music is and Windows Media Player will create a new library.

When I click on any file (audio) in my Library of WMP the programme hangs. I downloaded Version 10 recently and have only noticed the problem since then. I see near the bottom it refers to "sib1.od2.com" when I highlight any file and I do not remember seeing this before - I'm not a regular user of WMP but it looks as though this is in an area where the file being selected would normally be listed.

I've run HighjackThis and the log file is reproduced below.

I've run AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AVG antivirus, but none of these show any problem. I've also tried restoring to a date prior to downloading V10 of WMP which did not change anything.

Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks

So the title says much of it, but I have music that I downloaded through the Itunes store that is not showing up for some reason in my WMP library. In fact, the vast majority of my songs do not show up in the library. I did not rip any of the songs, seeing
as I don't even know what ripping is or how to do it. I use Windows Media Player more extensively than Itunes, so it is really frustrating to not have most of my music useable.

A:Songs are not showing up in my Windows Media Player Library

Hi,

Based on my research, .m4p files are also not supported by Windows Media Player.

However, if you would like to play these music in Windows Media Player, you may use certain applications to convert the files to .mp3 and check if it works.

Hope this helps.

When I rip a CD, it does show up in Start / Music / My Music folder. And will play in WMP when I double click it there, but does not show up in the library when I open WMP. Ripped 5 CD's today, the first 3 did just fine / info & in library-- last 2 are not. And when you load a CD to play or rip, it does not load up Album info. Just "unknown album" . Ran a troubleshoot and shooter said Library was corrupt. How do I fix this issue. Win 7 Home Premium on a new Dell -- no changes to default settings. Thanks, tom

Also, "find album info" does nothing on most songs and cannot delete songs from library--- nothing happens with either of this commands

A:Windows Media Player 12 - won't list new rips in library

you could reinstall wmp 12

some optimisers like norton, iobit, system mechanic change the default settings for privacy, remember last file etc etc etc,, suggest you re look at optiions under the top tabs of wmp

Howdy all!
Lately, Windows Media player is listing multiple copies of songs in the library for the different artists/albums. And one instance it has mixed up the listing of 2 albums under the one artist.
I have been looking for ways to delete these duplicates, nothing I have tried has worked.
I don't even mind completely deleting the list of all of the albums (as long as I can keep them in the My Music Folder)
Guess I could copy everything to a thumb drive to re load....
Any suggestions how to handle this situation?
Thanks.

A:Solved: Windows media player library duplicates

Hi Vicks,

The easiest way is to delete the WMP database, it won't affect your actual music files. Then reload the library.

Hi all - Windows Media Player 12 - Windows 7 x64

So I have decided to delete several un-listened-to songs from my library on WMP 12, and ended up doing so in the Music folder, because when I right-click on the song in WMP 12 and select Delete, nothing happens. Literally NOTHING - no lag, freeze or crash -
it just ignores the fact that I even clicked delete. The songs that I deleted from the Music folder have not been updated, that is, they aren't gone from WMP 12, and I have tried to delete songs that ARE in my Music folder from WMP 12, but to no avail. I can
still play songs that are in my Music folder directly from WMP 12. Any suggestions!?

This is a bit of an odd one and I've been poking around the interwebs for a while but not come up with anything of use so far. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I'm running Windows Media Player 11 on Vista and until recently have had no real problems. Recently however it has inexplicably stopped displaying the internal links in the Library.

For example: ordinarily, when viewing an individual album, by the side of the track listing would be the Artist, Genre and a few other pieces of data, clicking on which would result in being taken to the relevant part of the library. Now all I get is the track listing.

Ditto for other parts of the library - artist view, song view, etc. it's still the same. All the information is still there - I can still view the artist, album, that sort of thing by going to them manually - but the links have gone.

I have no idea how this happened and haven't managed to find anything by looking online for help. If anyone has any suggestions it'd be great :D.

Hi all,

I have about 1250 wav files on my computer, ripped from CDs using WM Player 11.

After ripping each CD, I went through and added composer metadata for every single track (for my job in music publishing). It took me aaaagggeeess.

Then today in a moment of idiocy I accidentally cleared the WM Player library. When I added all the ripped CDs back to the library from my hard drive, they didn't have any of the composer metadata anymore!

Is there any way I can get this data back without having to manually enter it all over again? PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME YES!

Many thanks!

Louis

Years of difficulty, hours of frustration trying to deal with this.  When I start Windows Media Player, it starts up in Library View for a couple of seconds.  Then it immediately flashes down to a minimized "Now Playing" window.  I have to click "Go to Library" to get to the library view.

I operate in the Library view.  I have no bleeping use for the "Now Playing" minimized window.  Since I haven't started playing anything, the "Now Playing" window is a useless annoyance.  I just want Windows Media Player to start in Library View.

I've posted around other help sites, and tried all the solutions.  Most of them tell me to put  /Task Library or  /Task MediaLibrary at the end of the command line of the shortcut menu in the Properties box when I right-click the Windows Media Player startup icon.

Here are examples of this advice: http://www.sevenforums.com/music-pictures-video/224291-how-open-wmp-12-maximized-library-not-minimized-now-playing.html

I've tried all the solutions here, over and over.  Nothing works.  I'm using Windows 7 Professional and Windows Media Player version 12.0.7601.18150, the most recent update.

Can anyone help me to get Windows Media Player to start in Library View?

Hi,
I'm aware of the issues around the Media Player library becoming corrupt and how to resolve it - when, for example, new files within your monitored folders fail to show up the library. Are there any best practices or preventitive steps to stop it happening
so often in the first place?
I have quite a large library of music, videos and pictures and it seems that my library corrupts quite often, which is a nuisance. It seems to happen most frequently if I have media sharing enabled, which unfortunately I usually do as Windows Media sharing
in Windows 7 makes an excellent DLNA streamer for my networked TV.
At the moment I've limited what I have in Windows Media Player, by removing all my photos and music from the monitored folders and only accessing those via the Zune player instead. I don't really like this approach though, as I'd like all my media accessible
via my library folders.
Any advice/suggestions on maintaining the library health?

A:Preventing Windows Media Player Library becoming corrupt

I think that in most cases, library corruption is caused by not properly closing WMP, or by not properly shutting down Windows. So if you keep that mind, your library should remain healthy.
If it still keeps getting corrupted, then you might not be resetting the library correctly - it's important to stop the WMP Network Sharing Service before renaming/deleting the library database folder.Tim De Baets

Hi,

I've recently found this funny Australian show called the Chaser's War on Everything. Youtube it, it's freakin' hilarious. Anyways, the videos are in mp4 format and I have no problem viewing them on my compter with quicktime, or vlc. However, I like watching shows on my xbox 360 by using it as an extender of the windows media player. but the thing is, a video must be in the wmp library to be playable on the 360. WMP doesnt have support for mp4 files, so I found a site that had exactly what I was looking for
(http://owlet.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!D48B90C1DDF5D401!297.entry)

. It instructed me to install ffdshow and haali media splitter. Then, you would go into the registry to force wmp and explorer.exe to recognize mp4 files and be able to not only play them but also show thumbnails for the movies in explorer.

I can now play mp4 videos in wmp, and explorer creates a thumbnail of the video, but the movies are never added to my wmp library. I have been pulling my hair out about this for 6 hours.

One alternative that I found was that if i rename the file from movie.mp4 to movie.wmv or movie.avi , the video would play and be added to the library. If I try to change it back, then neither movie.mp4 nor movie.wmv will ever be added to the library.

So i guess what im asking is, how can I make mp4 videos show up in the Windows media player library when it auto detects media?

PLEase HELP!
