Q: dell charging issue/charger not detected

hello...i bought dell inspiron 15 7560 on oct 16 2017...the issue is that whenevr i plug in the charger a dialog box pops up which say "The AC adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for the best system performance.".and the charging staus shows "plugged in ,not charging".this problem existed from the first day.although my laptop gets charged when i twist the charger pin multiple times ,this really annoys me that it take 5 minutes to properly connect n get it to charging status.i checked bios ,i updated it,also my battery is on adaptive mode and the battery health is excellent.but in bios the battery is mentioned to be unknown and it shows 65w adapter after i twist twirl the charging pin multiple times.i use the dell charger given with the box.is it any major issue? if not how can i solve this? i took it to dell store the very second day i boughts but when they connected the it charged but back home itz the same issue, plz help.this is really annoying and i least expected this from such an expensive laptop!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I ran into the old plugged in, not charging problem with my laptop about a month back. I hoped it was the charger, but upon getting a replacement 65-watt charger, the problem persisted. I assumed the fiddly bits on the inside of the laptop had given up the ghost, as I've had that issue before, but when a friend plugged in his 90-watt dell charger it worked like a charm. I'd rather not have to go buy a new 90-watt charger, but I will if I have to.
Also, I suppose I should mention that I'm using a 5759 with no modifications. Also, I used to get an error message every time I plugged in a 65-watt charger though it doesn't show up anymore for whatever reason and I can't remember exactly what it said. Something about it not being recognized or somesuch. Same error message with 3 different 65-watt chargers.

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.
2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.
3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?
5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.
6. I was thinking updating the BIOS, but I can't, because it wont update whi... Read more

A:Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

When I plug the charger in the message on the battery icon on the bottom toolbar reads as "73%, plugged in, not charging". Obviously the laptop is recognising the charger (i.e "plugged in") but it is not allowing the battery to charge.
I have installed every update on the computer and I have recently searched for any outstanding BIOS updates. The system seems to suggest there is a BIOS update to be installed yet when I try to install it the system says that it cannot detect a charger, and won't complete the update, or it won't complete the update without a charger plugged in in the first place. It's a no-win situation. The computer and charger are only 14 months old so this is very unsatisfactory. When I remove the battery the computer operates on AC power only, so again the charger is working, it simply won't charge the battery and therefore once the battery runs down to 0, which it will eventually, I will be limited to using AC power only.
If I restart the laptop with the charger plugged in it diverts me to a warning page saying that the charger is not recognised and I am given the option to go to the BIOS setup, go to diagnostics or to continue. If I choose "continue" it simply returns me to this warning page every time so the only way to power up the laptop is to do so with the AC charger out, and to then plug it in once the system has started so that the battery doesn't drain completely.
Please help.

A:Inspiron 15 5559 charger not charging battery (manufacturers charger being used)

An unrecognized AC adapter will not charge the battery.
First try a new OEM Dell adapter.  If that's also not recognized, replace the DC power jack:
www.parts-people.com/index.php
If neither the new adapter nor the DC jack solves the problem, you've got a bad charge circuit - replace the mainboard.

I had my charger plugged into and outlet and into the computer and it was working fine but once I unplugged it and moved my computer to a different place with a different outlet it stopped working. I have a Dell Netbook that runs on Windows 7. When I insert the charger in, it doesn't charge. Well, it usually doesn't. Sometimes, after I push it in really hard and twist and jerk it around, it works, but I have to keep it absolutely still. As you can probably conclude, this is a giant pain. The laptop and charger are about two months old. The charger shows no obvious damage.

This is the second time this has happened. It happened with my Compaq laptop back in May '09. This doesn't happen to my sister's laptop. Or my dad's. Do I have a charger curse or something?

A:Laptop charger issue for Dell NetBook

The Achilles heel of all PC laptops -- the ever weak, ever breaking power connection in the laptop. I've never seen a case where this plug was damaged that it was not caused by abuse -- pulling sideways on that connector when it was plugged in.

And in every case, the user denies they did such a thing; but, there it is, the irrefutable evidence.

It has to be either a damaged cord on the charger or a broken socket in the laptop. And it is quite an expensive repair if the damage is in the laptop, which it almost always is as the laptop must be disassembled completely and the main board removed in order to repair it.

I bought the laptop from a guy I know and the PC is just 3 months old. But from the first day I got it I've been facing problems. I managed to get all the software problems fixed (Firewall detecting viruses where there were none, all my files turning into files of size 888kb, driver problems) but now another problem has come up.
Before yesterday it always seems like I have to press the power button twice before it turns on. Yesterday afternoon I pressed the power button twice and it didn't turn on, then I plugged it in and it turned on, and the battery was full. I removed the charger and it was still working so I don't know why it didn't turn on at first.
Later in the evening as usual I went to this place to use the WiFi there and after downloading some stuff I hibernated it and went back to my dorm room. Only to turn it on and be told that 'my battery is critically low' which shouldn't be so because I was charging it while browsing and the battery was at 100%. So I plugged in the charger and pressed continue, and all of a sudden caps lock and the battery symbol started to blink. The battery symbol was blinking white and off (with orange randomly blinking in between) and the caps lock light was blinking steadily. When I tried to type my password (my laptop password is 'anonymous') the keyboard seemed to be malfunctioning because it typed something like 'a$&@+nonyidjdjdjmous' , like, basically strange characters in between my pa... Hi Team,

Since last week I started facing this very commmon issue ''plugged in, not charging''. It began by stopping at 75% and then went on deteriorating and today morning it was 3% (and wouldn't charge). I have tried all the possible solutions mentioned here by reading the threads. Is there a bug with WIndows 10 or I need to replace something. Kindly help.

Here are the following options which I have already tried:
1. Removed the battery and switched on the laptop with AC supply and uninstalled Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and shutting down. Battery reseated and switched on - Didn't work
2. Shut down the computer completely, unplugged the power cable, removed the battery and let it rest for about 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, put the battery in its place, plugged in the power cord and restarted the laptop - Didn't work
3. Removed the battery and let it cool down for 2-3 hours. Put the battery back in its place and plugged in the AC supply and restarted the laptop - Didn't work

A:Plugged in not charging issue with Dell 3521

Check the system to see whether or not the AC adapter is recognized - F2 at powerup.  If it's not, in order:
Replace the adapter.  If that doesn't solve the issue,
Replace the DC power jack inside the system, and if that doesn't solve the problem,
Replace the mainboard.

Several technical forums discuss Dell's issue, "The AC adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance."

All solutions I've understood include:
1-unplug adapter from wall and computer for at least 5 seconds to check the adapter and connections...and if that doesn't work
2-Install BIOS driver for computer to be sure your version is not 'out-dated'...and if that doesn't work
3-Contact customer support. The board may be the problem. You can order a replacement board or have a tech replace it for you. $$$$$$$$

I'm wondering, is it really necessary to replace the entire board when the problem could be as simple as an alignment problem with the plug on it (or even a damaged plug socket)?

Unfortunately, I do not find many solved problems. Also, because the issue is discussed so often, I wonder, "Is it a latent design flaw"?

I don't want to have to replace this battery again. It's only a year old, but it is down to 5% power and I am now tied down to an electric power cord.

I'd appreciate any constructive suggestions or feedback.

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help, i have a Dell latitude D820 which is having a problem when a charger is pluged in to it. When you plug a charger into the laptop the screen goes black but the laptop is still switched on. However if you turn off the laptop and try to turn it back on it powers on for about 2 seconds and then turns off. It does that with or without a charger. If you leave the laptop for about 5 minutes or so it begins working again and will boot.

If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

A:Dell Latitude D820 Charging issue

laptop charging issues are

knackered battery
bad terminals , fluff, dirt, bent etc etc
battery terminals dirty/greasy

other than that mobo issue where the power is attatched to the actual mobo , very common issue

try powering lappy without battery and just power lead to see what happens

Less than 60 days ago I received my brand new XPS15. It was love at first sight and I was excited at all the possible productivity enhancements I was going to realize with such a powerful machine. Two days ago I started receiving a message that machine wasn't able to recognize the power adapter properly and it would affect charging. Then the machine died. I promptly called tech support and they informed me that I would have to ship the XPS 15 to depot to get it fixed and that the turn around would take about two weeks. TWO WEEKS of being without a top of the line machine that I expected to last me for several years without a glitch. I upgraded the warranty to premium support and called back. The technician kept suggesting that I send the machine to depot (over 6 references) as if they sent a technician to repair the machine he/she might not have all the necessary parts. When I asked the technician and her manager what they were going to do to compensate me for my lost time they said they couldn't do a thing. Further they refused to send out a new machine instead of attempting to swap out the motherboard and RAM.
Now this is a really sad turn of events because at one time the name Dell had meaning. It was about quality and customer service. This is obviously no longer the case. My calls were first routed to the Philippines and then India instead of a tech facility in the United States. The staff at these locations are obviously incentivized to keep the costs as low as ... I have had my Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop since late 2012. It has been a great computer, and although I have recently upgraded to a new Dell laptop, I still use my 5520 for writing and entertainment purposes. The only reason I upgraded at all was because I had a hard drive go bad and didn't realize that it was only the hard drive at the time. I restored the computer with a different version of Windows 7 after I replaced the drive and everything is working great - except the battery charging. It is sporadic. What happens is I plug in the charging cord at times, the computer detects it for a second or two, and then it no longer charges. I ran a complete PC health check and it showed everything is working properly and the battery is healthy, but it did not detect it being plugged in even when it was. I also flashed the BIOS, and it had no real affect on the charging issue. WHAT DID WORK was shutting down the computer, removing the battery, and pressing the power button for 30 seconds and reinstalling the battery. After I do that, it does detect the charging cord is connected and the battery charges properly - but only for a week or two, and then I usually have to do it all over again. Any thoughts? Is my battery going? Charging cord? Any other thoughts? It's not a HUGE deal that this is happening. I love this computer. If I can correct the problem, I will. Thanks!

A:charging via usb c using non HP charger

wingman1800 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! The problem is, if you use a non-HP charger and that damages the PC in any way, you have blown the warranty -- and the total cost of repairs will fall on you. You really want this to happen? If you remember the problems with the Samsung Note7 exploding, ALL the instances of that happening (at least in the beginning) were due to non-Samsung chargers. The problem with USB-C is that it can deliver a LOT of power to the device, which is SUPPOSED to be regulated so the device does not overheat, but chargers that don't adhere properly to the USB-C standard can easily overheat your device. So, you're risking destroying your device in order to save a little money.

So, my issue that ive looked everywhere for a solution to is this.  I was about to give this laptop to someone and I reformatted the hard drive to clean it up before doing so.  After this I went to dells site and loaded up the drivers for this machine.  All is fine up till this point.  Then I updated the bios to the newest version a12, and all went fine.

Well, later that day I needed to unplug the laptop and go to a different room and It just turned off after I unplugged it.  It wouldnt turn on with battery power either.  Plugged it back in and it loads fine but the battery is stuck on 36 percent charge and says not charging.  Now im getting a message saying the battery needs to be replaced as well, which is *** because I know that the battery was working just fine before this day.  Not only that why wont a battery with 36 percent charge turn on the laptop?  Its got the flashing red battery symbol when powered on with the ac adapter but without the computer on, but still plugged in, the battery doesnt charge or have any lights.

I have already tried the uninstalling of the acpi trick, as well as the taking the battery out while its running, or taking it out purging the power and reseating.  Ive tried all the common tricks to no avail.  Not sure whats going on but I know this battery was good, and it still says 36 percent but wont charge and wont power the laptop on.  Hope someone can help.

Thanks Gary

A:DELL VOSTRO 3500 BATTERY ISSUE (not charging and wont power on computer with charge) HELP!

First check:  make sure the BIOS (F2 at powerup) recognizes the AC adapter.  If it does not, the battery will not charge.
If the AC adapter is not recognized, try another Dell OEM adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:
http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=9935
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter IS recognized, but the battery will not charge, unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Try again -- if the battery still won't charge, odds are the battery itself is bad.
If the battery is original to the system, it's about four years old - well past its expected lifespan.

A:Charger Light On, Not Charging?

Hi

first off dont use anything but an official charger, the cheap ones can and will damage your motherboard due to them being unregulated and supplying to much current.

If the charger has the light on but wont charge then the internal cable is broken and may be shorting out inside the sleeving.

check the cable by eye for severe kinks or bends in the cable.

Should you find one, cut the section just before and after the kink and then strip the cable back and join the wires and test it, if it works then you can either solder the wires and use heat shrink plastic to join them or buy a new one.

Not weird.  The 720 needs 20V to charge.  If your adapter can't provide that or correctly negotiate that it's not surprising that it doesn't work.

I recently received a Dell Inspiron 6000 and a Dell Studio 1737 laptops from my uncle minus the chargers. A few years ago, both the original chargers died so they bought replacement Rayovac batteries for each laptop and a replacement charger. I guess it worked for a while until the batteries stopped charging. I'm assuming it was due to the charger not being OEM. Right now, I have the laptops running on an HP 19.5 volt 7.4 amp charger with the same polarity but none of the batteries charge and I get the error message on boot about using an unknown charger. So right now, I'm looking at getting an OEM charger to see if I can get the batteries to charge and to return the HP charger to my dad (it's the charger for his work laptop). I found this Dell PA-3E charger but I'm not sure if it will it work. It's the same voltage, amps and polarity but it's not the same model charger that's written on the bottom of the laptop. I'm afraid that the laptop will run but will not charge. Would this charge and work for both the Inspiron and Studio laptops?

So I'm out of town and I forgot my power cord for my laptop. I am using someone elses HP charger but it only charges when it is in sleep mode or the power is off. The charger that came with my laptop I beleave was a 65 wat charger but I'm not 100% sure. The one I'm borrowing is 45 wat. Is there anyway to get the charger to charge when my computer is in normal use?

Hey, my old charger to my laptop just stopped workin, so i had to buy u new one. Here is the thing, old one was 120W but the new one is only 90W, and i am having problem with charging. Its only charging for a while and then it stops and i have to unplug it from laptop and plug it in again. Can anyone tell me why is it doing this weird stuff ? Thankss

A:While plug in, charger is charging for (5-20min)

It may be getting hot and shutting off, especially since it is a lower wattage than the original. Is it a universal? Did you make sure it has the same voltage as the original? Some generic replacements are poor quality.

Hi,I am receiving my X1 Carbon 6th Gen next week. I am wondering if I will be able to charge it using my phone charger? It is a PD charger and outputs 30W, up to 20V at 1.5A. EDIT: My powerbank can output up to 12V at 1.5A, will this also work? Thanks in advance,Mats

A:Charger plugged in, not charging toshiba

If you take out the battery when the computer is totally shut down, and plug in the AC adapter and start the computer, does the light on the charger come on, some are green, some not....

And, does the computer work normally if you are using just the AC adapter?

I would not use a battery that charged only to anything but 100% and here is why> overheating can result and cause a fire, I have had one laptop battery explode and it is not a pretty scene.

The AC adapter might also be damaged, but just answer the questions and will try to help further. I buy this type of Toshiba adapter all the time, and can point you to some reliable but not over expensive ones.

A:XPS 13 9360 charger brick get too hot while charging - HELP!

Hi HINOON,
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Does the system overheat?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
If it is only the adapter that overheats and if the system is under warranty, we shall replace the adapter.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.

Hi there,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you have query regarding battery charging in Ideapad 510 15IKB
Better practice would be to use Battery Conservation Mode.
If you are using Windows 10 you can enable Conservation Mode from Lenovo Settings

It is about a year since I bought my hp compaq notebook . Recently the battery icon on the notification area shows 'plugged in, but not charging' status even if the charger is not plugged in. The indicator light is always ON with light-white light which indicates battery full status while the charger is not plugged in. when I plug in the charger it will charge normally and shows orange-red light which indicates battery is charging.I tried a hard reset but it doesnt work. I tried to use the laptop with out the batter by plugging in the power cord, and insert the battery after a while, but no change as well.I am gussing there is a contact inside the power port on the laptop. I am so worried these may damage my battery, my laptop in the worest case. Any solution? Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Laptop Charger Plugged In But Not Charging

There is a BIOS update available that is specifically for the intermittent charging issue. I recommend installing it.
