Preferred Solution: HijackThis log -- Pgate Basic and other infestion

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
Appreciate any help! I've run AV with latest updates, spybot and adaware reviewing this group for information on pgate-basic. I don't see any files on my system or registries but still see it lasted in my "add remove programs". I'm concerned to use the remove utility from there because it wants to download a program and I fear it's a virus.

I've captured the hijackthis log on my computer. Can someone please review and tell me if I've cleaned everything up to get this pest off my computer.

Appreciate all feedback.

Thanks!
Pam

A:please review Hijackthis log - can't remove pgate basic

Hi pam

Welcome to TSG!

You can safely use Add/remove to uninstall pgate.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

How to start your computer in safe mode

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Also you have way too much running at startup on this machine.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will hav... Read more

I have a program on my computer called PGate-Basic. I have no idea how it got on my computer but I know it's not something I added on purpose. When I try to uninstall it through the add/remove programs function, it refers me to their website which requires that I download a program in order to uninstall it. The website seems very questionable to me. I have Windows 2000 and in the past few months I have been getting hundreds of popups even though my isp has popup blocker. I have also been getting e-mails that say things like mail undeliverable which contain a virus. It implies that I have sent mail that was undeliverable but I never sent mail to the address it says I did. I have Norton Anti-virus and it has detected a lot of them but I'm wondering if any have slipped through. I know that it has detected Netsky and Trojan viruses and I have had it quarantine them as it was unable to fix or delete them. If you can help me with any or all of this I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks,
Confused!

Ok, not a computer expert - far from it, I have XP and in the last few days its ground to a complete halt, I cant get IE or AOL (yeah I know) at all.

I've been trying to find out whats wrong and was advised to check my add remove programs for anything new/unusual and found this pgate basic thing.

I was recommended to download and run adaware but it didnt make any difference. I was then told to try hijack this and the log is below.

I'm concerned at the thought of altering registry settings, but can anyone advise a step by step solution in nice simple english!!! Here's hoping.

Thanks guys

I've run my Norton Antivirus, AdAware, CW Shredder and still have it. I've run HijackThis but can't tell what to delete. If relevant, my HijackThis log is as follows:

A:PGate Basic still not Leaving

The fact that it is in Add/Remove programs doesn't mean that it is currently installed but more likely there is a residual registry entry that needs to be removed.

Run regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Look for it under the "uninstall" key and right click on it and delete it there. That will remove it from Add/Remove programs.

Also I don't like these entries in the Scanlog and suggest you check and "fix" them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zg] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ZG.EXE

Reboot afterwards.

Can anyone tell me anything about PGate Basic? It appears to be an adware program, and when I try to uninstall it through the Add/Remove Programs feature in Control Panel, it takes me to a website where I am supposed to download something, supposedly an uninstaller. Everytime I get to that point, I back out as I don't trust them and am afraid of making the problem worse. Any advise?? Thanks!

Hi jjlin and welcome to TSG,

This thread is a month old and you should always start a new thread of your own rather than tacking onto another one as it gets confusing for those who are trying to help you. I will ask that it be split into a thread of its own so you don't have to do anything, it will be done for you.

Please download and run the following programs:

AD-AWARE

Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and download Ad-Aware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right-hand corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window: Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

A:system restore to clear infestion

No. But what you can do is use disc imaging software to create an image of your drive and save it in the event you ever need to use it. You should also use disc imaging software on a regular basis (save the images to a second hd or other off-disc media).

Hi Reis

Welcome to TSG!

Click here to download CWShredder. Close all browser windows,UnZip the file, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished restart your computer.

IMPORTANT!: To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Go here and download Adaware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest referencefiles.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When I woke up this morning I had an extra search bar on my IE. From what I've read I found out that its a Startium bar. I don't know how it got on my IE because I'd never heard of it. I DLed and ran HJ, and found one tag that was startium, deleted it, but its still on.

Also, I have had spyware before, but I've usually managed to delete it without problems, but I have this new one, its listed in my Add/Remove box as PGate Basic. I know its some kind of spyware, and when I try to uninstall it, it sends me to a webpage that says I have to download the uninstall.exe. How do I know this isn't more spyware??

Anyway, here is my HJ Log after I did some cleaning. I use NetAnts as a download manager, it comes with some spyware, but after deleting them the program works fine. Its the best DL manager I've had since Real Download. I used RD until they stopped supporting it. Also Popcap refers to the games that my mother plays online. Nothing wrong with them that I know of:

Use free Partition Wizard bootable CD version 4.2 which still has non-destructive Dynamic>Basic conversion as a free feature: pw422.zip ISO - Windows Live

Backup a WIn8 System image and your files, Boot CD, Rightclick on the HD to convert. Create/Resize your partitions as you wish.

Win7 should configure a Dual Boot menu, if not use EasyBCD to add Win7 after install. Earlier versions of Easy are still free.

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to get my feet wet in creating a .vbs file from notepad to do a basic function. I wanted to be able to run .reg files remotely but also interactively. This led me down the path of simply finding an example of a .vbs that would open anything remotely at all. Notepad is what came up with the most results and the Win32_ScheduledJob object appeared to be what was needed.

I researched many different places but this is a decent walkthrough. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa394601(v=vs.85).aspx

I grabbed the code below out of the website and changed the date parameters to run in a couple minutes from my current time. I could see the task in scheduled tasks but when the time had come and gone nothing would happen and this is just trying to get it to run locally so far.

Hello,

I guess my question can be asked in two ways, the short way and the long way.

Here's the short one:

Can you do everything that you can do with VBA with VB?
The long one is:

I need to be able to write programs that conceivably invovle web forms/web services (VB right?), Microsoft SQL Server 2002 (VB again right?) but also Microsft Office applications like Excel and Access (VBA??). Does that mean I need to learn both Visual Basic and Visual Basic for Applications? In my initial research into Visual Basic I've learned that Visual Basic for Applications is a subset of Visual Basic, so shouldn't that mean that Visual Basic, being the parent and more powerful than Visual Basic for Applications, is capable of performing all of the functions that Visual Basic for Applications does?

Thanks for your help,
Bsdslayer
([email protected])

A:Solved: Visual Basic vs. Visual Basic for Applications

I do not know VB at all, only some VBA. The main difference is that VBA has words specifically for the applications, a classic exanple would be the
Range("a65536").End(xlUp)
both range and .End(xlUp) are for use in Excel.

~then a Q drive which is in accessable with Office 2010 on there...which i removed from the program files and installed office 2007

1. how do i get rid of q drive...it will not let me access?
2. am i doing right by placing the program files into c drive?
3 is d drive for all data files...ie a word file or excell file?

Oh yes, I did do a system recover back up on 5 CD's before i started anything.

Your help would be greatly appreciated and in advance thank you!

A:some basic help please

If it will help you, C drive is always your operating system drive, you do not want to mess with it. It is where windows 7 is located and where you normally install programs. D drive is a data drive - it is where many people place their data. That would be used for things like your my documents, my photos, my music etc. You would do that for several reasons. If your system becomes corrupted or inoperable you would not lose some of your most valuable things. Some things like family photos, many of your documents and such are difficult to replace. It also saves space on your C drive. If your system becomes inoperable, it will most likely be the operating system. That and your programs can be replaced. Without knowing, I cannot tell you about the Q drive.

Who installed your operating system? If Asus installed it, it could be a recovery partition or something, but usually they are not given a drive letter like Q. If Asus installed it, there should be an explanation in your owners manual.

I would suggest that when you first come on this site look in the very top on the right side. There is an extensive collection of tutorials. They are written by members of this forum and are very good. You can learn many things that you can do with windows 7.

If that does not help, you come back but you should provide us with an image of disk management. You can get there by typing disk manahement into the search box when you click on the windows button on the bottom left of your screen. then... Read more

I recently got a new computer which came with a DVD Burner. I have a few questions...

First of all, is there a certain file type (ie: .avi, .mpeg, etc...) that I should be looking for that works best for burning DVDs? I know that when i used to burn audio discs there were a lot of different file types (ie: wav, mp3, etc..) but it was the mp3's that you needed to burn music discs for regular audio players. What filetype do i need to burn regular video discs to be played in regular (non computer related) DVD players?
Secondly, can anyone recommend any shareware that I can use to actually create/burn the DVD's after I have them physically downloaded on my machine? My DVD burner drive came standard on my HP machine, and so I woulda thought they would have included a burning software, but it appears they didn't. I have one that burns audio discs, but not video. Can anyone recommend a free (and very simple) program that can take downloaded files and burn them onto a blank DVD disc to be played on a standard DVD player?

I have a small business which is starting to expand. I need a new computer, a new laptop, a pocket device that links it all. I also need some education to better decied what equipment and software to buy. I also need (gotta have) someone to help me learn how to use and utilize it. I live in the Seattle area. Any an all suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you in advance.
