Android vs iPhone security

Q: Android vs iPhone security

I have some questions about smartphone security, specifically the difference between the Android & iPhone platforms. My motivation is curiosity. I am not using this information to decide which phone to purchase (I use a Tracphone).

Reading several articles on various web sites, I get the impression of the following:
(1) Android is less secure than iPhone
(2) There is no known malware for iPhone

Are these statements true? Is there any hard data that documents malware for the different platforms?

Anti-malware software: There appears to be several products for the Android, but I cannot find any product for the iPhone. Is this discrepancy due to Apple's superior security technology?

Comments?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I am not a Apple expert (because I think it sucks) but there is no malware for Apple, so they have no anti-malware programs. The reason is that is open source and all members who use it can fix any problems.

Looking at a few Android phones right now. Mostly LG and Sony are catching my eye, the rest of the brands seem to be on the decline. My Note 4 is almost at life's end after just 10 months, and I can confidently say I will not be looking into Samsung again.

So the question at hand, especially with more and more Android security issues arising with their OS changes, is do I make the jump? Are iPhones as good as they are marketed to be? I'm well aware that they are technologically behind out-of-box, but their OS mitigates that con by being incredibly smooth to use.

I use my smartphone for 4+ hours per day and I have been on Android for almost 10 years now.

This will be a $800+ purchase, so serious responses please.

Hi, I have a new FVS318G with latest FW, trying to configure FVS318 as VPN server, which to allow VPN client such as Android and Iphone be able to connect to FVS318 from the cloud and establish VPN tunnel.

The manual is so confusing and not helpful (Chapter 5 - http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/products/FVS318G/Documentation/RM/FVS318G_RM_27Aug10.pdf), Netgear si using the term so unusual, it calls VPN Gateway and VPN client. Don't know why don't they call VPN server and VPN client.

Anyway I did call Netgear Tech-supp but not much help. According to the Tech, there is not require the username and password for client to connect to Netgear VPN gateway. I am totally lost. I understand that FVS318 does not support PPTP and L2TP so no luck for Windows, but Android and Iphone have support to IPSec VPN.

Very appreciate if someone can shed the light on how to config FVS318 VPN, with username and password (for 2-3 different users username /password credential), VPN policy and Firewall polices if needed for VPN to work.

Thank you very much.

A:FVS318G-VPN - Android and Iphone VPN client

As in the other thread on the older version of this router, there is no provision to add in user level authentication on top of the standard IPSEC tunnel negotiation.

I have never set up an IPSEC connection on either Andriod of iOS. But the standard information to configure any IPSEC device is to set the parameters for IKE phase 1 negotiation (Diffie-Helmen Group and pre-shared key) and phase 2 (DES, 3DES, or AES). Most of the time, there is some sort of smart phone client installed on the phone to work with the VPN server. In this case, Netgear does not have one.

There are a number of Android apps (Google Play-sourced only), mainly photo and video-related, which I like a lot, although I don't really like using a tablet. I've researched a bit into Android emulators which run on Windows 7 e.g. here

6 best Android emulators for PC | Android Authority

and while the idea sounds great, I wonder -- Android is said to have loads of security flaws. I work pretty hard to keep my Win 7 PC clean (I hope!). Is there a risk that by running Android apps, I'm running security risks?

A:Does running an Android emulator bring Android-type security risks?

First of all, it's simply not true that Android has "lots of security flaws". Of course it's not immune to viruses and attackers, but it's not inherently that its an immense risk in it. There are vulnerabilities, but most problems actually came from using untrusted software that abuses the devise. As always, the number one vulnerability in any system is the user.

Now to business. There is no exact answer to that question. It will greatly depend on what emulator do you use and how it's exactly implemented, how does it manages to run Android software and how much does it emulated and how exactly. Frequently, I would expect a different implementation of the Android low level API, meaning that bugs in Android will never afect an emulator (which in turn can have its own bugs), unless some behavior is there "by design", in which case the emulator should attempt to copy it.
Besides, I would expect the emulator to isolate the host computer from malicious Android software (which is not generally aware of Windows existence). Unless an Android virus specifically targets a particular flaw of a particular version of a particular emulator (which as already happened with virtual machines), I won't worry too much about it.

The comes the problem of what programs do you install on the emulated Android. When you install a virus there, it will attempt to do the same malicious actions than it would do on a real phone. Some actions will work the same, for example those i... Read more

Hi I have the above 3 devices, when plugged into ANY of my USB ports front or the ones in the back, do NOT work.

Yesterday my iPhone 3GS (used as iPod) was plugged in and it worked. After I finished transferring the songs I wanted, to my PC, I plugged in iPod 4 to my PC using the same cable and the same USB port..... Nothing! Moving the USB cable to other ports again nothing. I uninstalled the USB drivers from Dev Manager and restarted my PC. Then it seemed to recognize the devices, only to go off and on, never keeping a steady connection. My Android Motorola Droid Razr HD LTE, isn't being recognized either.

I have tried differing ports, different cables. I tried the same devices on my Laptop. Yes they work just fine. I have also tried a USB Flash drive in the same ports, nothing. Seems the only ones that are working are my Mouse, Keyboard and Printer all the other USB ports - seem to either Dead or having the weekend off! This has been going on for months like this.

Any ideas as to what's happening with my PC???

Thanks

A:Solved: iPhone 3GS, iPod 4 and Android USB headache!

Thanks everyone for your input

An update:

Just checked USB cable # 6 and it seems to work. Each of the others didn't. BTW, a friend of mine suggested that I also update the BIOS, seeing that I only had 3 USB Root HUbs in my Device Manager. Don't think that really fixed the problem, I do now have 4 Root Hubs now though + an updated BIOS.

Thanks Guys for ya help..

I've had an Android for almost 2 years, and although I really love it I'm considering getting an iPhone when my contract ends (I have an iPod touch and just really starting liking some of the apps and user experience)

The only issue for me is I'm a heavy Google user: gmail, google calendar, google contacts, etc.

I love how right now I can add a contact or calendar event on my phone, and it immediately syncs to my Google account (or vice-versa syncs to my phone).

I did a bit of research so far on how this would work on an iPhone, and it seems there are apps but that you still need iTunes? Is that true? Or is there an app that will mimic the functionality I get on my Android?

I do plan to jailbreak it, if that helps any.

Thanks

1) Security is not essential for anything - you can run Windows fine without any AV or security but you just need to be extremely careful.
2) Android Devices can get infected pretty easily thanks to the Google Play store letting in malicious applications - IOS doesn't have this issue.
3) If you are infected on your Android device then download stuff like:

- MalwareBytes
- Emsisoft or Kaspersky AV
They can be found within the Google Play Store!

Any insight (except that which is asinine or comedic) is appreciated.

[My apologies if I posted this in the wrong place]

Long story short, I've been a fan of RPG Maker, sadly, I don't own a computer. However, there is a mobile RPG Maker emulator called "ChocoR2K" which allows you to play RPG Maker 2000/2003 games on your phone/tablet.

However, VirusTotal says it has the viruses known as Fobus and Olympus. Both of these are used to create banking accounts, text premium numbers, and so forth.

My question is, should I be concerned with these results or are they false positives?

Antivirus scan for 52605f9fc1296a058553af39ac55c40b489e06697369934d223aef3c8dfd8919 at 2015-12-03 16:46:30 UTC - VirusTotal

From my point of view, it doesn't seem like a threat, since only 3 of 50+ antivirus programs determine it to be "dangerous", but a professional or semi-professional opinion would be nice to have.

There's a lot of important information on my phone and hindering it would probably ruin my career status and college status.

A:Android (Security Check)

First of all on our Forum there aren't comedic or asinine opinions but there are opinions, questionable or not but always opinions.

Now, from VT analysis just seems the emulator you mention: Choco R2k Player and the detection (PUP) is refer to the fact that this app probably contains ADS.
Also the entry "unknown permission from android reference", in the app permissions, doesn't mean the app is infected. It's just not a standard permission from Android SDK.

So, in my opinion, it's a false positive.

I've spent the past little while finding security and privacy focused alternatives for everything. I would switch to LineageOS, but certain apps like Netflix and banking apps won't work and to their credit, as they will scan to see if the device is rooted. I have put together a hypothetical security configuration to use on my Galaxy S7. Look for a summary of why I chose what I did at the end.

Main security: Bitdefender Antivirus Free, AdGuard For Android (paid), IMSI Catcher, Bitdefender USSD Protection, Find My Device

Temporary Security (Will be uninstalled after first scan): Norton Hault, Kaspersky Threat Scan, Bitdefender Carrier IQ, Trend Micro Shellshock Detector

Other but relevant apps: LessPass, FreeOTP, LastPass, OpenKeychain, SSE Universal Encryption

VPN (configured through AdGuard): NordVPN

DNS: NordVPN DNS

I wanted to have both a firewall and VPN without rooting, and with AdGuard, I can configure NordVPN within the app, while it acts as a firewall and content blocker. I chose to use NordVPN DNS to avoid DNS leakage, and it is pointless to use AdGuard DNS if I am already using the app. I got Bitdefender Free because it has arguably the best detection rate for android, and I don't care for the extra anti-theft features as they don't work since I am using Signal instead of the default SMS messenger. I am unsure if it has real-time protection, but if it doesn't, it won't matter as AdGuard will be used as a firewall and content blocke... Read more

source: Android Oreo: What's new on the security front - Help Net Security
The newest version of the OS contains many new features and behavior changes, as well as many security improvements and security-related changes.

Android Oreo security improvements
With Android 8.0 Oreo, the platform no longer supports SSLv3 (it was about time), does not fall back to earlier TLS protocol versions and retry establishing a HTTPS connection if a server that incorrectly implements TLS protocol-version negotiation, and apps? Web content is now handled in a separate, isolated process from the containing apps? process.

It was already known that the newest addition to the Android OS line will prevent apps to draw on top of system UI, in an attempt to foil screen-hijacking malware.

A new restrictive permission called TYPE_APPLICATION_OVERLAY will block pop-up windows from being positioned above any critical system windows, such as the status bar and IMEs, allowing users to access settings and block the app from displaying alert windows.

Oreo also features Google Play Protect, a security suite for Android devices that scans and verifies apps users want to download from Google Play, monitors apps users have downloaded from a third-party app store (looking for any change in behavior), periodically scans the device for potentially malicious apps, and more. The suite constantly updates itself, and is on by default.

Finally, the Allow unknown source setting is no longer offered to fac... Read more

<beginning of quote>

In Android Security, we're constantly working to better understand how to make Android devices operate more smoothly and securely.

<snip>

This blog post explores the Android Security team's research to identify the security-related reasons that devices stop working and prevent it from happening in the future.

Flagging Dead or Insecure (DOI) Apps

To understand this problem more deeply, the Android Security team correlates app install attempts and DOI devices to find apps that harm the device in order to protect our users.

With these factors in mind, we then focus on 'retention'. A device is considered retained if it continues to perform periodic Verify apps security check ups after an app download. If it doesn't, it's considered potentially dead or insecure (DOI). An app's retention rate is the percentage of all retained devices that downloaded the app in one day. Because retention is a strong indicator of device health, we work to maximize the ecosystem's retention rate.

Therefore, we use an app DOI scorer, which assumes that all apps should have a similar device retention rate. If an app's retention rate is a couple of standard deviations lower than average, the DOI scorer flags it. A common way to calculate the number of standard deviations from the average is called a Z-score. The equation for the Z-score is below.

Difference between a regular and DOI app download on the same device.
