Q: Great nifty app, worked fine 15 years ago, but alas

Yeah, if someone wants a bit of a challenge then hear this. I have a pretty great old puzzle game with 45 levels called Fire_en (ie. the English language version). I've uploaded it to http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=09313690338420475359. (Uh, the way this site works you can't just click on the link; you have to copy and paste onto a browser tab URL I guess.) I can assure it has no malware but of course you can always scan it with your virus protector to be prudent. If recollection serves, this game ran fine when my machine was using Windows ME. But now I can almost get it to work but not quite. I've tried it under Vista, W7 and W10 but so far no luck. However I did get it to work okay just one time, I think it was on the Vista PC. When I launched it one time a message came up balking about maybe some incompatibility with the process "MFC Resolution" and the message gave me the option to close MFC Resolution, and when I did so opt, the game launched and ran okay! But on subsequent launches I never again got that same error message and was never again presented with the opportunity to close the offending process, and the game doesn't launch right and it leaves its main subordinate routine, jeu.exe, in some hung-up state which I have to force kill with Task Manager. I'm pretty sure that Fire is a real straightforward app perhaps written in C++ perhaps utilizing Visual C++ runtime. You, the expert can readily make substantive determinations. There is a sub-folder with 6 or 7 .ini files critical to enabling the precise performance of the game. You can look at those .ini files and probably know at once what system is being utilized. I am not sure. As for Compatibility mode, I have experimented tirelessly with setting and experimenting the various Compatibility options for both Fire.exe (which I think does very little) AND the main routine, jeu.exe, but my efforts have not been rewarded.

If you get the game to launch, of course advise me how, but here's how it is played: You have a crate and a water ball. Use Space to select one or the other. The selected one is shown in the upper right corner. Use cursor keys to move the crate and ball. When moved, each one keeps traveling straight until it hits an impediment. Some squares are on fire. The water ball must roll over or onto a fire-engulfed square in order to extinguish the fire. Goal is to extinguish all fires on the level. F2 can be used to Restart a level if you want to try it again from the top.

I hope this amuses you. There may be other level sets available (if memory serves) though they are likely long lost.

THANKS!

Preferred Solution: Great nifty app, worked fine 15 years ago, but alas

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Suddenly only HID devices are added to the system.  Powered and non-powered USB storage media are correctly identified in the "Hardware and Sound, Devices and Printers" panel as compatible USB Mass Storage Devices, but they are "unavailable"
and cannot start due to a Code 10 problem.
I am sure that the hardware is still o.k. because I can boot into an alternative Windows environment from a CD ([email protected] software) and my USB drives start up as per normal.  Returning to Windows 7, the troubleshooter tells me there is a driver
problem.  Removing and reinstalling the driver makes no difference.  And if I ask Windows to look for an updated driver it tells me that I already have the best driver.  When I run a scan on the system files (sfc.exe) no errors are reported.
I have also run a virus scan and there was no virus to be found.
Could the problem be an unintended consequence of a recent Windows Update? There have been quite a few updates released in the last few weeks.  I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me, as I have a rapidly mounting collection of data files
waiting to be transferred to external storage.

Hey guys,

So after attempting and repair-install (xp pro sp2) I ended up having to RE-install and was able to recover ALL of my data (this was largely thanks to the helpful people here, and their friendly advice) but that's also kind of the problem too.

I now have a dozen versions of Owner, Guest, etc. My programs and downloads are all over the place and are missing pieces necessary for functioning. Thousands of empty files (that I'm reticent to delete because of their possible value/necessity) and paths that lead to nowhere.

What I want to know is:

Is there a way to consolidate/trim down the registry (this is the area that I'm least familiar with), to eliminate some of these loose/dead-ends & file paths?

Also, I am the ONLY user on this machine. What (if anything) can be done to trim away some/any of the fat? For you see, I have gigs of it.

I know there are some services I can stop too (fast user switching for example) any tips there would be great.

Thank you in advance!

I have a Sata 2.0 ext hdrive(90gb). It was given to me with 4 partitions on it. A friend went on my computer last night. I asked what they were doing to the drive. They were looking at how to partition it differently. 30 min later they claimed my computer shut off due to low battery and when they got it bk on the ext drive wouldn't work. I think they were trying to partition, format, and maybe change the format and something went wrong. They were using disc manager but won't come clean. Now it shows up in devices but not the bios. It won't let me access anyrhinf. No formatting et it says ime and drivers but it doesnt show it activated, its volume is a 0, as are some other of the other properties. Ok I will try to explain this best I can as I been trying to figure this out for over a month.

My Acer Aspire came with its HDD being put into two parts C having windows vista on it and D holding the recovery items. I added a new hdd which I quick formatted as it was new and called it K.

I was installing some school programs for my daughter on K and was not in front of the PC. I heard that Dunt sound when windows has issues with itself I looked and it was rebooting which was fair enough. Well it went to the acer screen then to the black screen with all the checks to the NVRAM.

After that it went to a black screen with a flashing icon in the upper left of screen and wont load past that. I just today ran a acer diagnostic tool off a USB everything MOBO,HDD,DVD etc are working perfect so I thought software..

Well I finally got a windows vista 32 home prem disc and tried to run repair but it kept saying it needed missing drivers for cd/dvd I know it wasnt the cd/dvd but the HDD's so I got their drivers off acers site and added them and was able to see vista as a choice now for repair except instead of my system drive being C like always it for some reason became "I" and my other half of the drive which was D somehow became "J" K was still K..

Well in system recovery I seen my account names and my admin account and even 2 restore points I remember making. I tried to restore one it said it worked and rebooted all the way to the evil flashing ... Read more

I hope someone out there can help cause my head hurts from beating it on the desk!
My primary developer machine was really getting messy so I decided to whack it out & put a fresh load of win2k in it today.

Now I also have to preface this by saying this machine has been running dual video cards for almost a year now without so much as a whimper. It was so easy to get going the first time it was scarey! Anyways, I dumped the hdds, fresh load of 2k - SP2, all the driver & core programs... I left the PCI card out during the install, as I did last time...no problem UNTIL, I put the PCI video card back in... COMPLETE LOCK UP at the "white screen of pain" (windows 2000 start screen)
Ive tried both cards seperately ... no problem, Ive tried going in in safe mode...everything I can think of with no luck at all...ONE TIME it made it into windows & then shut the AGP card off so I had to hard boot.... I dont get it NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

Here's the system stats:

Asus A7N8X mobo (with latest bios flash)
1 gb PC2700 DDR 333
AMD XP2500
"Mad Dog" Geforce Raptor Ti 4200 AGP video card
Trident Blade 3D PCI video card

I HAVE to get this thing going again, I use my second monitor as much as my first...if anyone has a clue please HOLLER! Thanks much!

A:win2k + dual monitors - worked great until re-install

I have tried many stuff with 98 / 2K / Linux / BeOS and multimon.

With 2k, to have multimon working you have to be the following situation :

Your secondary video card has to be able to disable the VGA so the obvious answer is "yes, your trident card can because it worked before !!!"

Example :

1 AGP 3D video card (can disable VGA)
1 PCI crappy 2d video card (can not)

you HAVE to set primary display adapter to PCI in the BIOS, so the BIOS boot will be shown on the monitor connected to the PCI adapter.
Then you have to set primary adapter to your AGP card IN W2k.

If you don't set primary to PCI in the BIOS you'll only have your AGP card, for example.

For 3 monitors, you have to use at least one of the PCI cards taht can disable VGA by itself, so that you set primary to PCI (the other card), etc ...

An article on the problem can be found in MS KB, don't have the link any more, sorry ...

If these settings are wrong, you can end up beign totally screwed.

My advise :

1) Remove the pci card
2) Boot Windows
3) Install drivers for AGP card
4) Shut down
5) Set primary display to PCI in the BIOS
6) Activate allocate IRQ to PCI VGA if disabled
7) Put the PCI card
8) Boot Win2k (should boot without problems, try safe mode if not)
9) Install drivers if needed, set "extend my desktop" and the other stuff

All should be fine this way

Hi, new to the forum...

I have had windows mail on my vista computer for over 2 years and has worked with no issues.. send/receive mail using dial up a good portion of the time, my cell phone for tethering (alltel), neighbors broadband, other cable service providers when our of state visiting relatives, etc., and have had not had to change anything in the account settings from my current and 15 year ISP mail provider (aceweb).

I use this alternative ISP provider to maintain a 15 year old email address for the webpage for customer to contact me even though I have used various other sources for getting on the web.. and have had no issues between the two sending and receiving mail til yesterday.

I just recently (3 months ago) obtained high speed internet from Frontier and for the past 3 months have been using their high speed access but still been using my alternative ISP provider name for the mail portion through Frontier with no issues like I said again til yesteday.

I spent more hours than I care to say today between my ISP provider (aceweb) and Frontier trying to find out why I can receive mail and not send mail. I think I have tapped these geeks capabilities with this and don't have anywhere else to turn.. both Frontier and Aceweb are pointing fingers at each other saying it's each other's problem.. but here I sit with no outbound mail and for a biz that hurts.

And I cannot make the change to Frontier mail since as I said, I have 15 years utilizing this aceweb... Read more

Hello misskittykats,
Welcome to the forum, since your email worked before the MS updates , try this for starters, do a system restore back to before the Windows updates. Use this please : System Restore - How to[11]=Backup%20Restore
Once this is done, check if your Email works as it should with the setup from your Email ISP as they should be set. Post back and we can go from there to further diagnose your issue .

I searched multiple forums and could not find something similar enough to what I am experiencing with this computer, so here I post my scenario and question.

My girlfriends computer (Emachines T2742) was just running fine the other day. Her dad said it was turning off by itself all of the sudden and now it won't even come on. I took it completely apart "everything out" and cleaned out every spec of dust. Hooked up a known working power supply (it has a test button on it). Only having the power supply connected to the mobo and the hard drive with all other components disconnected, the test button is pressed and the ps fan and cpu fan turn on. There is also a green light on on the mobo "which means the mobo is getting power" correct? I press the power button on the case and nothing happens. I hooked the power led, hdd led and power switch all to a bread board for testing and they all work fine when the power button is pressed, so I know it isn't the switch which is bad. I tried everything I could possibly think of and the damn thing will not turn on. Also, I tried to turn it on with ram properly seated. Can someone give me some ideas please, this is driving me nuts. I almost am starting to think the power supply went and took the mobo with it. Possible?

A:Computer worked fine, now it does not? Help?

yes if the power supply went it could of took parts with it causing it not too boot the mobo miight be fried........ first take out all ide/sata drives and take any daughterboards like modems and graphics out. Then reboot and see if you get a beep if you do then good news, if you dont then your mobo is fried sorry. next power off and now put the boards back (graphics first) and reboot. and then keep adding the parts back until you find the hardware with a short in it.

I installed Windows7 from a USB stick that I got from Microsofts online service (not sure whether it had the Service pack or not) onto a new Asrock motherboard, and an AMD APU. Got it working. Installed the drivers from the CD that came with the motherboard, did back up to a DVD, and then connected to the web, and the first thing that happens is an update from Windows.

Normally this would result in some type of warning "installing update 1... n, do not shut down your PC." Now it's just saying "shutting down" and it's been like this for approx 30-45 minutes. I tried ctrl+alt+del and ctr+shift+esc, but they resulted in nothing. How long should I wait?

A:New W7 installation; everything worked fine, until the update

I have a special font (.ttf) that comes with a third party program. In addition to the program reading the font, I also install it in Windows to use it in Word documents.
This font worked fine when installed on my Windows 7 64-bit computer.
However, on my Windows 8 64-bit computer, 16 of the characters on the font do not show. Windows has substituted other default characters in place of these. (I checked the charmap and instead of the characters, Windows puts default characters.)
Yet when I open the font in a third party program like Font Creator, all of the characters on the font appear true.
Is there a setting in Windows 8 that I need to adjust so the characters will show as they are supposed to? Or is there a way to tweak the font so Windows 8 sees all of the characters that are on it?
I went into the font settings and made sure it is set to show all fonts, not just those for my language.
Unfortunately, the person who created the original font has passed away so I cannot talk to him. But I was able to find out that the font was created by a program called FontLab (which I don't have and can't afford to buy.)
I have made sure that my laptop has a default printer selected, so that is not the issue.

I upgraded Vista x64 Ultimate to Win 7 x64 Ultimate.

The upgrade went fine - no major issues with the upgrade process.

I am, though, having some small issues when running 7:

1. Outlook 2007 process remains open after closing Outlook.
2. Very slow closing certain programs/games.
3. Gadgets doesn't work.
4. Occasional empty folder pops up on taskbar that I can't close.
5. WEI for my SATA3 HD is 2.9 - 500GB Seagate
6. System shutdowns take forever

The system, overall, seems to be quite responsive but the problems I'm running into are somewhat frustrating

Not sure if these have been addressed in other threads yet, as I'm still searching them. I'm guessing that part of it may be due to MB driver issues, but not sure - running an EVGA 780i MB.

Thanks,

Terry

It seems to me that once in a blue moon, there will be a program that will work fine for a while, but then later refuse to run until I reinstall windows. The program that refuses to run this time is called Nebula (don't worry, it's freeware). I've even redownloaded a fresh copy and I get the same result. I double click the icon and nothing happens.

I would watch the processes in the task manager while I tried opening it. The process would appear for a moment, then disappear. I've opened up and watched Process Explorer (www.sysinternals.com) carefully. I've taken note on what processes are running when I'm trying to open Nebula, by holding Enter with Nebula selected. The only process that is consistently working while I'm trying to open it, is explorer.exe, and I doubt that is the culprit.

Since I can't find anything in the processes, should I look for something in the registry? What else can I do to troubleshoot when this kind of stuff happens? Maybe it broke from one of the Windows updates?

A:Program worked fine before, won't work now.

Hello eriknoc, Welcome to TSF!

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD.

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

Hello,

I have been having trouble accessing my favorite webpage, deviantart.com. I have been on the site for about 4 years and have never had this problem.

Everytime I try to go to the site, I get "This Page cannot be displayed." Also, if I go to a search engine and type in "deviantart", I get the same message. However, I can still get to any other webpage, but nothing that has to do with "deviantart".

I am using the newest version of Internet Explorer, and I even tried the newest version of Mozilla Firefox, but no luck. I'm also using McAfee. Cox is my ISP.

I've tried clearing my cookies, files, and the like. And also I've gone through the processes of clearing any possible hijacking, but still, nothing seems to work. Other people seem to be having no problems getting on to the site though.

It's very irritating and I would be very very grateful if someone has a solution.

Thank you

Hello all,

Straight to the issue:

My internet has been fine, for a while now... then all of a sudden i am not getting a signal...

what i know:
- there were no cable outages in my area
- i have a 2:1 cable splitter in my room (1 for tv and 1 for the modem)
- when i plug the cable from the jack right into the modem it works
- thinking the splitter might be bad i went and purchased a new splitter.
- i have tested multiple wires from the splitter to the modem

So i am not sure what i can do to resolve this issue... why would my modem not detect a signal coming from a splitter all of a sudden?

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks ahead of time everyone!

As you have mentioned that there is no issue with your power supply and your battery is also charging, there is a probability that your battery backup has gone down. To check if this is the case, you are advised to generate a battery report by following the guidelines mentioned on the link below and see if that helps:http://www.howtogeek.com/217010/how-to-generate-a-battery-health-report-on-windows-8-or-windows-10/ If you are not able to find anything substantial from the report indicating that there is some issue with the battery, you can consider using another working battery (if feasible) and see if the issue occurs with another battery as well. Malware and virus infections can also cause Windows to shut down abruptly. To check and remove the infection, you can scan your system using the security software (if any) installed on your system. In addition to this, you can also follow the guidelines mentioned on the link below to detect and remove infection:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/does-computer-have-virus#1TC=windows-7http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/how-find-remove-virushttps://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/ If the issue still persists, you are advised to contact nearest Acer service center by using the link below to check if there is any hardware issue:http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/service Hope this will help you.

I have never done this before, but I'm desperate. I have done everything I can think of, and even sat through 4 hours of windows support trying to help me. Nothing's worked.I'm trying to connect my laptop (Lenovo, newest windows 10 update) To my Samsung Smart TV with screen mirror. It has worked perfectly fine in the past. This problem arose a week ago.  It does find the connection when I connect it. It says: "Desktop (name) is trying to connect" But it never goes through. The screen stays black, and then after a minute or two breaks the connection with a message on my tv, saying: Connection with laptop (name) lost. As well as a message on my laptop saying: "Your display couldn't connect"I have checked my drivers. Updated the wireless drivers and graphics card with the newest ones. I even reset my Tv to factory reset. But nothing's changed. Yesterday I went to the shop and they told me to reset my tv, but like I said, that hasn't done anything either. Please, if any of you have any idea of what's going on, your help is highly appreciated.

I've got a Lite-On SOHW-1653S DVD burner, using Windows XP. It's worked fine from the day I bought it 12 months ago.

Over the last few weeks, it's failed every time. I try to burn some data files to a disc -- using Nero, or CD Burner XP Pro -- and it fails during the burn. When putting in a blank disc, I hear some low clicking sounds. I assume this to be the lens adjusting to a distance where it can read the discs, as I sometimes here similar sounds from my PS2.

I know it's not the discs, as I've tried using a few different brands, and discs from the same spindles work just perfectly on my neighbours' writers.

I'd appreciate any responses, even vague suggestions. I'd really like to avoid having to reformat to fix it, as it would be a massive pain, what with my 160GB of ipods and only having a 40GB HDD...

As a side-note, my DVD-ROM/CD-Writer often tells me there's no media in the drive when trying to read discs. Not sure if this is related, but it started a the same time.

A:All my DVD burns fail between 15 - 40%. Burner worked fine a while ago.

I would first suspect a failing laser in the drive, even at 12 months it happens.

Not repairable either.

As it "almost works" its unlikely to be a Windows software error.

(Writing this on a phone)
So I was using my computer just fine one day though I had noticed it running a bit slower
Than usually.
Next day when I boot it up I get a black screen where windows runs some kind of repair on the registry.
After that it goes to the windows login and I could a sees windows it was super slow and would not start any programs without freezing so I reinstalled windows 7 and after it worked fine though I had to look for some missing drivers.
Day after I boot it up again and get startup repair that states it can not fix the problem.
This is the error message:
Startuprepairoffline

So after trying to fix it by disconnecting external devices which only was my keyboard, mouse and screen. It still did not work so I reinstalled windows again.
It worked for the entire day again with no problem. Started it this morning and logged in it was missing audio drivers, restarted the computer and now it will not boot.

About an hour ago the computer was working fine. After going out, coming back and turning it on, it would not display anything on the monitor.

I opened the case up and looked at what happened. Everything is plugged in correctly. I have removed most of the dust inside. The graphics card fan spins once and then stops upon powering it up.

I believe it is an AMD (Radeon HD?) R7700.

After looking online I tried replugging the PCI-E into it and nothing changed. It worked fine an hour ago, can anyone help me out?

UPDATE: Turns out it appears to be overheating as the only decent explanation. It refused to work for a good 5 hours, but after leaving for 3 hours and coming back it worked fine.

A:Graphics card not working - worked fine before

Update - still not working but when i reseated the RAM and powered it on it made beeping sounds and the fan spun - still no picture. Reseated again and nothing happened. (Back to square one)

2 weeks ago I bought a new Asus RT-N15U router, everything was fine up until 2 days ago when the 2nd PC could not connect to the internet, before that it was working fine. I tried changing cables and even connecting directly from the affected PC to the cable modem and it still didnt fix it. It so weird that even when I connect directly to the cable modem the PC still cant connect to the internet. So I realized this was most likely something beyond my knowledge and Im looking for some advise. Both connections are wired, tried resetting the router and letting it auto detect my setup and that didnt solve it either. I have experienced this problem for quite a while now with a lot of games;

I used to be able to play the following games just fine:
Gunz: the duel
Silkroad
ROSEonline

and some other freetoplay games. they worked great and I enjoyed playing them.
Anyway, now, some years later, when I try to play any of those games I get the following Bluescreen stop error:
***STOP: ERROR 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xB9DFCAE5, 0xB9C42B4C, 0x00000000)

this is what I tried to do so far:
cleaning my pc (wiping all the dust from fans and RAM that is)
uninstalling my videocard driver and installing again
scanning my pc with lots of software

Reinstalling windows fixed the problem for one of those games (gunz) but with the other ones i am still experiencing the same problem over and over, whatever i try...

I have uploaded the most recent minidumps. I hope you can help me.

oh right, my pc specifications:
2GHz pentium 4
512MB RAM
GeForce Ti4200 (128MB I believe)

If you need to know anything else for you to help me please let me know

All the dumps crash at khips.sys, which belongs to Kerio Personal Firewall. I found the following thread that says there's a conflict with any game that uses GameGuard. The error is the same as yours, but I can't get the process from your dumps.

The last post is dated February 22, so there may not be an update available. You can always try a different firewall.

Hi, I use my HD TV as a monitor. I do this by connecting an HDMI cable to my television. I've done this without a problem for almost 6 months. Yesterday, My Mom had to bring my laptop to school and she left the hdmi cable plugged into my laptop. I didn't think it would be a problem but when I got home the HDMI cable no longer registers as connected to my laptop. My television knows the cable is plugged in but not to what so I get no picture. My laptop makes no indication whatsoever that I'm plugging or unplugging my cable.

Anything I can do about this? I'm not sure if there's a way I can like reinstall the actual port or anything. Never had a problem like this before.

Not too much, I restarted, and experimented with other HDMI cables and other ports on my tv. Only have one HDMI port on my laptop.

Thanks :D

A:HDMI Cable Not Being Recognized, Previously Worked Fine

Maybe do a system restore to an earlier date when the
hdmi cable was working. Maybe some drivers or software got installed after
which is now causing this problem.

About amonth ago I was installing updates and suddenly my pc rebooted, and I was shown the GRUB boot loader, which I don't recall ever using, i tried logging into windows using the bootloader but it didn't work, so i resulted to the fixmbr and that did the trick, a few days ago, I needed to check on my properties of my PC and noticed that my windows was no longer activated. I have run sfc and that gave me the windows protection message, I also ran chkdsk. I also looked at buying a new key since I'm running ultimate and considering downgrading to pro, if I can't get this fixed, which I rather not spend the cash if I need to, can anyone help me out. In the last year I replace the hard drives, cloned the system, switched to AHCI while still activated, and activated the on board firewire, the last install before I checked the activation was was protools which installed a fair bit of hardware drivers.

Hi there, my first post here and hoping some knowledgable people will be able to help me with my problem.

EDIT: May well be fixed, manually booted onto my second hard drive and it booted fine. Must've accidentally installed OS onto that one instead. I'll change the BIOS order and it should all be good.

Back-story
So I obtained the official Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit iso from the microsoft website, burned it onto a USB flash drive and performed the clean install onto my laptop. Whilst doing this I deleted the partition which had all the dell drivers and utilities etc on, no biggy I thought since I have that installation disc anyway.

Anyway the clean install worked fine, booted to the desktop at which point I noticed I didn't have the tools needed to connect to Wi-Fi so I used the dell drivers/utilities installation disc to install the necessary things. At this point I restarted the laptop.

The Problem
Now after the restart, the initial screen appears with the usual "F2 for setup, F12 for boot options" prompt. After this it turns to a black screen with _ flashing in the upper left of it (before the clean install it would do this for a few seconds before going onto the windows logo and booting up as usual). However now it is just stuck on this screen indefinitely.

Any help/ideas? At the moment I'm just re-downloading the iso to try do the clean install again, as I stupidly deleted it once the clean install was done!

Thanks in advance!

A:Windows 7 Clean Install - Worked fine until restart

Hello Madnesslink5 and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like you can now boot ok. Is that what your EDIT means ???

Post a screen print of Disk Management so experts here can see what you have and may be able to help clean things up.
Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

It sounds like you installed Windows with multiple HDs connected ...
It's best to only have the HD connected where you are installing Windows while installing.
Then none of the installation/boot files can be put on some other HD.

Here are some tutorials by gregrocker you should review:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 (applies to Retail also)
Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

I suggest keeping the install media.
You may need it some day for a Startup Repair, Reinstall, etc.
I burn a bootable DVD, create bootable flash stick, and keep the ISO file on HD.
Maybe overkill, but if any one media fails, I have other options if needed ...

A:Spilled juice on laptop and worked fine until I turned it of...

The sizzling sound was likely the sound of your motherboard shorting out (dying). The juice probably gradually seeped down inside and when you applied power again- zap. For what it is worth now-any time liquid is spilled on a laptop it should immediately be powered off, battery & power cord removed and the laptop placed upside down for at least 24 hrs to drain any tiny bit of liquid.

My new cx6600 Epson Multi-function printer has been working off my Win2K pro OS for a couple of months with no problems, then today the printer decided it wasn't going to print. Am able to run the test print on it and it copies o.k., but any prints sent to it are held in the spool queue. I tried cancelling all the prints, rebooting both the computer and printer, and reseating all connections. From these symptoms I have deduced that there probably is a software problem... Following EPSON advice , I decided to uninstall and re-install the software. Following the usual add/remove process the os refuses to remove the software due to a missing or corrupted (???) info file. According to the
experience of other individuals, I have to manually remove all references to
the printer manually, from both the registry and the files on the HDD and
then re-install.

Wonder if someone has an answer to the following two questions -
Question 1
What specific things do I need to change in the registry? I have worked with it before, but this looks like a big job. Would rather go in with a laser tool
rather than with a sledge hammer, so I don't screw it up.
Question 2
Is there something in WIN2K that also needs to be addressed when something like this happens ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - Dave - Mostly Perplexed

A:Epson cx6600 worked fine, then stopped - want to uninstall

You overlooked something.... resolution

The problem is solved.... Two problems..... I had forgotten to sign on as an administrator, so it would give me an error every time. I signed on as administrator in my system win2k and I then began to remove all the epson applications. The printer software, however, is listed together in the add/remove program section and I had several epson entries. I was inadvertently trying to remove an epson c860 which has been dead for awhile. It gave me a window to reply , but it was hidden under other windows. When I discovered it, I realized that when I asked to remove the epson printer it was pointing to c860 instead of the cx6600. When I didn't reply to the small window to confirm c860 removal, it seemed to go off into lala land, so I would just cancel the whole thing. AFter I pointed to the right printer (cx6600 series), it removed it, but gave no indication that it did. I checked the register and all references to it were removed, so I proceeded to install the printer again. This time it worked, and everything is o.k.

I just bought this laptop.
Amazon.com: Samsung Series 9 NP900X1A-A01US 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black): Computers & Accessories

I know the specs aren't amazing, and I can't expect the performance I get from my built desktop, but I primarily bought this for something portable for school.

Anyway, took it out of the box, started it up, everything worked great. Installed two programs (chrome and Avast), restarted after installs and played with it some.

Then I shut it down to let it charged. Turned it back on and it freezes within a minute or two after startup everytime, works fine in Safe Mode.

I would try a restore, but never created a restore point as soon as I bought it, silly me.

Any ideas?

Contact where you bought it and make them fix it, or use the built in recovery partition to restore it to factory new state. According to the manual, you press F4 during boot to start the Recovery.

Hello all, first post. I am really stressing out here. I have run a legal copy of XP Pro SP3 for several years on my laptop, and everything has run smoothly until recently. Last night my battery ran down completely to the point of shutting off, which it has done in the past. But when I turned it on this morning, and I log on, a message pops up that says "You must Activate this copy of windows before logging on, would you like to activate now?"

If i click no, it logs off, if i click yes nothing happens. Now when i plugged in the ethernet from the router, and click yes, a windows activation thing pops up, but stalls at "checking for connectivity".

I can boot in safe mode.

Does anyone know what I can do?

Thanks!

I've tried several combos of Logitech mice and keyboard combos. I settled on using my Logitech G15 keyboard and my Logitech G5 mouse. They each have their own separate programs. I also had a bluetooth combo, all Logitech. Everything was working great with my system then I think having all the mouse and keyboard programs caused everything to freeze up or work very slowly.

I also went into MSCONFIG to try to keep one of the Setpoint programs from starting. It was set to "Selective Start". It said the goal was to eliminate programs with issues and get back to Normal Startup, so I unchecked the Setpoint program and selected normal startup. That's when things REALLY bogged down.

I uninstalled EVERYTHING Logitech related, but I'm still getting BSODS and "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown messages upon a very long startup. I did a system restore to a few days ago, but that didn't seem to help.

Hi there folken,
This is probably the worst time in the world to be reporting this, yeah ... right when I get back to school. But anyway, I was sitting at my desktop computer at home, talking to a friend on Skype, and this didn't hit me till the day I was going back to school since everything worked fine. I had clicked on some odd file, thinking that since nothing was found in it, that it was good, and that Eset's realtime module would see it if otherwise necessary. I had closed the file that had appeared fishy to me, but my friend told me that some auto processes caught by Win Patrol were recognizable to him. I still killed the file not realizing what had actually happened. The day afterward, I decided to run a quick scan with MBAM, and see what was really going on, for by then, firefox and IE were configured to use a proxy server, and when my attempts at fixing the issue in firefox yielded no results, I realized that something was definitely wrong. MBAM came up with one instance of trojan.downloader followed by two instances of rootkit.tdss, and all three were removed successfully. I begin to wonder if I caught the darn thing just in the nick of time. I've gotten no strangeness from any of the sites I belong to, everything on that seems to be fine. What do you folks think? You think that when I get back, one more run with MBAM on a full scan, then double checking with TDSS killer will do it? I suppose it doesn't make as much of a difference, becau... Read more

I deployed Vista Business over the weekend to test the migration strategy for our standard desktop (XP, Kaspersky, Office, AutoCAD, FileMaker) to Windows 7. I deployed Vista on an ASUS P4VM800 mother board with 1 200GB WD IDE drive, 1 500 GB WD SATA drive, 1GB RAM, Intel P4 2.0 Ghz CPU, 10/100, Netgear Wifi card, USB Mouse and Keyboard. It worked fine. VERY SLOW but fine. I performed all updates and activated automatic updates. I installed Kaspersky and when it rebooted - it crashed. It has never recovered.

I tried Last known Good and it hung. The hard drive would flash sometimes as if it is trying to do something and it would run the drive as if the drive was damaged. It would spin up, slow down and spin up again. There is a clicking sound each time it slows down. The keyboard locks up and it loads the WIFI driver as my USB dongle flashes as if it is on the network. Mouse works also. This continued for 5 minutes before I cold booted the machine.

I tried rebooting in Safe Mode and CRCDISK is the last thing it loads then it repeats the same symptoms stated above. I inserted the Vista DVD and it comes up with a blank screen with the Vista Background. The mouse and keyboard work but there is nothing presented on the screen before it starts acting up again.

What is this? Why is it happening? I would think Vista updates would be stabilized by now to prevent this. If this was not a LAB and happening in my workplace - there would be hell to pay. Please tell me Microsoft h... Read more
