Why does the product key on the outside of the laptop give "invalid product key"

Q: Why does the product key on the outside of the laptop give "invalid product key"

I have a toshbiba Satellite L750-1XK and managed to get a Windows 7 Installation Install Disc as the owner of the laptop did not make a recovery disk. The owner reported that the laptop would not startup and when i looked at it the hard disk had stopped
spinning.
I brought and fitted the new disk drive and booted up from the CD and installed windows 7 64bit software. All went well untill i entered the product code from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop and was informed that the product key was invalid. The
operating system has installed and is running ok BUT the network controller has not installed and as such I cant get the laptop on to the internet to get any further.
I did try to get a disk from toshiba but there web site says that windows 7 is not supported so i cant get one from there.
Why does the product key come up as invalid?

Preferred Solution: Why does the product key on the outside of the laptop give "invalid product key"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I bought a used laptop at a pawn shop with Windows xp. I tried installing SP2, but I get the following error message:
"Windows XP Service Pack 2 can not install. The product key used to install Microsoft Windows may not be valid........"
I have a valid CD Key, in my possession. I have heard that I can change the current cd key to another one through the registry. Does anyone know how to do this?

Someone brought me a pc to fix... I opened it up and it had no hard drive... but inside there was a PCI fax/modem thingie w/its install CD, and a burned copy of Windows XP Pro w/SP1, and the product key code was written on it. I have several hard drives to reformat, so I thought it would come in handy and tried it on one, but didn't get very far!

{Note: I originally installed the virus infected hard drive as secondary in my pc and cleaned it. When I made it primary, it did boot up AND start Windows... I made the mistake of "not" chkg & writing the previous product key before trying to reinstall XP.}

I booted from the CD, and chose "Repair Windows XP" versus a complete install. Everything went fine and it restarted... up until the "product key" status. The key code written on the CD came up as "invalid".
(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Now I have a hard drive that automatically reverts to the EXACT spot where I left off EVERY time, which is the product key entry window. Is it possible to revert the hard drive to its previous version of XP?
What are my options at this point?

I wanna dual boot Windows 8 Consumer Preview with my existing OS, Windows 7 Home Premium. I have created the necessary partitions and also created the bootable pendrive from the ISO downloaded.

When I begin the installation, everything goes fine until the Product Key screen comes up. I have tried 'NF32V-Q9P3W-7DR7Y-JGWRW-JFCK8' and 'DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J' but I get an error message saying 'We couldn't verify the product key. Check the installation media'
When I enter a random product key like '00000-00000-00000-00000-00000' it gives a message saying that the product key is wrong, but when I enter the correct product key I get the error message which I have put in bold statements above.

What shall I do? Please help.

Hi friends Bobby Light here!

I keep getting this error message "The windows 7 product key you typed is invalid for activation"

I purchased my version of Win7pro from a "friend" and he said the code should work but it is not... I asked him for more help and he said he is unavailable at this time.

Real Quick Question... is this pop up just going to keep popping up or at some phase stage does the whole system lock down? And I can not get into my stuff at all with no recourse at some point. Many thanks and I guess I just want to know what happens if you just keep ignoring the pop up. Says I need to activate but what if I simply don't?

Best regards,
Bobby Light

My friend has Vista OS and Ms Office XP-Small Business (Powerpoint not included) version on her laptop.
We bought the version of Office XP (below) for her to be able to get/ download Powerpoint only. Both the seller and Microsoft Customer Service said that that can be done and that it will work on Vista, and to just choose custom install.

(What we bought: Microsoft Office XP Standard 2002 Upgrade NEW
original cd, box, manual sealed in plastic clamshell
Compatible with Windows NT, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista
upgrade requires previous version of office 97 or 2000
Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

When she puts in the Office XP CD and chooses "Install or Run program", and goes thru those normal beginning steps, including putting the product key in the spaces, a message then comes up saying, "can’t find qualifying products" on the hard drive. How do we get this part of the installation process to recognize that she already has Office XP or is there another issue going on?

I have a question I hope someone can help me with.

I bought Windows 10 Pro License / Product Key cheap on Ebay.
I have verified it is a VOLUME_MAK Type Product Key.

I downloaded my ISO direct from Microsoft.

Installed and Activated ? no problems.

I am aware that MS could deactivate because re-sale of this type key is not permitted. I am not concerned with that. I am more concerned with the person I bought it from being able to gain access to my machine. So here is my question.

Question: Can the person who sold me this VOLUME_MAK Type Product Key use it somehow to gain access to my machine?

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Can Seller Of "VOLUME_MAK Type Product Key" gain access to my system?

What you have done is software piracy. You cannot even defence yourself by telling you didn't know it's illegal, you knew very well that a volume activation key is not for resale.

Our forum rules strictly forbids all conversation about piracy. I have reported your post to administrators.

I'm deploying our Windows 10 company image through MDT. One of the steps i do is enter the windows key through a command line custom task. The problem I run into is that I keep getting the "Installed product key successfully message" dialog box to come up which stalls the rest of my task sequence and forces user intervention.
The command line I'm using - which I thought would prevent any confirmation boxes - is:

slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can clear this message automatically, suppress it from even popping up or if I'm doing something wrong, what the correct command is?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have XP with service pack 2 already installed. I tried installing sp3, following all the guidelines about being an administrator, closing all programs, disabling virus scanners and such, but consistently get this "internal error" as soon as the installation starts. The event viewer doesn't say anything useful, but according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949384/ this is a problem with a funky product id. The solution is a problem for me, though.

The solution says I should go to the System Properties to get the product id. Well an abstraction of that product id is 69831-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. Then it tells me to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\Key-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, and work with the fields in there. It predicts that there might be more than one key conforming to that format, and there is. It says I should pick the key that has the same ProductID as found in the System Properties, but they both have the same id and it isn't what I found in System Properties, it's 55285-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. What do I do now? I have one product id in System Properties, and another that appears in two keys in the registry.

I've recently wanted to install 'Rome: Total War' onto my computer, the installation works fine up until right at the very end [very annoying!], the installation decides to stick/crash on 'publishing product information' and then it closes out of the blue, and all my installation files are deleted, Some help would be really appreciated in helping me try to solve this.

Notes
The installation works on a copy of windows Xp without service pack 2, but as soon as i install windows server pack 2, the problem just re-appears, im guessing my problem has to do something with the installation of windows server pack 2.

I've tried ALOT of things to try and solve this issue, including searching the internet [most of the seem to be VERY old threads from late 2004 about this exact issue] and following installshields advice and other peoples ideas on how to solve this issue, but no solution has seemed to pop up for me.

All help is appreciated, and feel free to ask me for more information if you require it!

where I teach, I use some computers that are donated from local businesses. They come through a third party that distributes them, so I have no idea where they originally came from.

Two of them are now coming up with messages saying that my OS (Win2000 pro) is 'NOT GENUINE." I get these messages constantly. I checked their FAQ's and all of it, and there is no solution for me other than spending $149, which I will not do. Their FAQ's do not address the issue of someone using a donated computer and I can't get the messages to stop; it's not like I can uncheck them in startup or anything. I tried System Restore but it won't allow me to do that any more.

Is there any hope for me? If I install a new Win2000 Pro over the top (as opposed to a clean install), will I still keep my apps? I simply can't go through a full install right now, and have to reinstall every app and every file...

any ideas anyone?

A:"counterfeit vs. Genuine Microsoft Product" message

Do you know the contacts of the supplier of which produced your computers? If you do, I highly suggest you contact them to see whether they use bona fide Windows OEM installations or not. If not, you can try and call Microsoft and explain your situation.

Unfortunately, you're still going to have to pay $149 to get a bona fide Windows CD to replace the "ungeniune" one. I'm not exactly sure how a Windows installation works (as I specialise more in Macs and Linux boxes), so I don't know if you would have to do a complete erase; however, you should always backup your data before you do any install/replace.

Hope this helps.

Dear Microsoft,

I would be very much interested in an operating system and product that is command line centric and geared towards IT professionals and highly skilled home users. I think their will be a greater resurgence of command line centered tools in the future for network administration, database administration ( data access much like Oracles SQL Plus tool), and home, small office batch processing tools, mainly due to security, propriety of information, ego, and a whole host of other issues.

If you were to offer this command line tool specifically, a whole new breed of shortcuts should be added for virtually every command... such as "ipc" or "ic /a" for ip config (ip config /all) etc just to cite one example.

This new software should come pre-packaged with Widows Word, Excel, and a Multi-Relational Database built right in, but scaled down a bit as not to affect Sales of your popular Server based "Windows SQL Server" Product Lines". Anyways, I just think there would be a huge market for a product like this. I’m saying, yes there will be software, and GUI's available for applications administered from the command line, but the heart of the system should be command line based (in the spirit of your old DOS based systems) and be used to manage small home networks, and small business networks, that can suffice with perhaps smaller scale data delivery systems, that companies will find useful. But here’s the clinc... Read more

I purchased a product key from OfficeMax a while back and installed Windows 8 Pro onto my computer no issue at all. However, after my recent purchase of a SSD, I reinstalled my Windows 8 using the same disc and product key, but to no avail. It said my product key had been banned.

The only thing I did differently was try to use a different email address during setup than I used the first time. Does that really ban your product key?

Do I just need to call microsoft?

A:"Banned" Product Key after re-installation?

Hello Gage,

Usually that indicates that the product key had already been added to the blacklist on Microsoft's activation servers as an invalidated key for one reason or another. Usually, due to piracy.

About all you can do is call Microsoft using the number to activate by phone to see what they say.

Activate Windows 8 by Phone

If it's blocked for good, then I think I would be going back to OfficeMax armed with what Microsoft tells you demanding another product key.

i'm building my first pc and was on pricewatch searching for cpus. i've narrowed it down to either a pentium 4/2.0 or 1.8GHz. But I noticed some of the descriptions say "without memory", a few specifically saying RDRAM. I wasn't sure if they were referring to some type of new memory on the chip itself (aside from the cache) or the memory that will be installed on the motherboard. When I saw RDRAM, I thought they were probably referring to the memory on the motherboard. could someone please explain what the "without memory" means?

thanks in advance.

A:seeing product descriptions saying "cpu w/o memory"?

There are two basic types of RAM, well actually three now. RDRAM is the most expensive type, and a few motherboards use it. IMO, I'd steer clear of it. DDR is SDRAM that is double speed, which is what goes into most new P4 systems nowadays, with ratings like PC2100, PC2700, etc. Finally SDRAM DIMM memory is what used to be common, it's the PC100, PC133, etc. memory. Another wrinkle with DDR or DIMM SDRAM is registered vs. non-registered.

The w/o RAM just means you're buying a MB and processor, you need to buy the RAM. If you buy such a MB, make sure you know specifically what memory it requires, and if it's registered or non-registered.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hello,
I have searched the knowledge-base and Google to try and find an answer to this to no avail. Sorry if I am missing something obvious here.
Can you tell me if there is a problem using a new Windows product key when capturing an image that had a different product key to begin with.
Our institution was provided with a new product key after the previous one was suspected compromised. I have recently updated this image and updated the answerfile with the new product key. However, after applying the new image the PC reports
that Windows is not genuine.
Can anyone shed any light on why this is and if there is a way to fix it?
Thanks!

I recently bought an ASUS X54C-BBK5, an entry-level laptop if there ever was one, and it came with Windows 7 Home Premium x64 pre-installed.

However, I installed a 60GB Corsair SSD. It is insanely fast. I used the Windows 7 Home Premium x64 install disc in our office (as this laptop didn't come with media) and got Windows installed in under 20 minutes. I then used the product key on the bottom of the computer to activate it. Okay. No problem. Installed lots of updates. Installed MSE. These all require Genuine Windows.

About four days later, it starts popping up with a notification that "this product key cannot be used for activation." What gives? I intentionally paid for a computer that came with a product key, and it liked it initially - what changed?

I will not purchase a new product key. That would end up being half the price of the laptop and I cannot afford that.

What options do I have?

note: I work in an office where we repair students' computers and we frequently need to re-install OS, which is why we have so much OEM unactivated media.

A:Product Key "can't be used" for activation - why?

You just need to use the phone option and if they ask tell them you put a new ssd in it and reformatted.
IF the key is valid they will give you a unlock code, and if you ever have to reformat again there should be no problem after that. Hardware profiling is part of how they connect the key to a specific person/computer.

but the one that windows reports(useing slmgr.vbs -dli in run command) end in KKMRQ also tweakVI also reports this(with a totaly different key but ending in KKMRQ) why has this happened im confused as to why its like this. thanks

A:product key: sticker on laptop key is different from actual product key???

The product key is encrypted in the Registry, so maybe one of those commands/utilities has the wrong encryption algorithm.

If you bought new the key on the sticker on the laptop is your personal unique key and the one in the system is the OEM's "volume license" key.

We received the notebook a few months ago from my grandmother's estate. HP Pavilion Notebook. Grandmother had a few years using this Notebook, but had a fire in the back office/sewing room, all her important papers were in that room and my uncle says
all boxe, books, diskettes are lost.
No backups or product key. So how do I get the product key? Being without work I can't afford to buy this product again. Would upgrading from Windows 8.1 to your free Windows 10 remove this problem?

OK. I got given a laptop to fix. The problem was is that the O/S was hanging and BSoD. I thought, ok, simple fix or repair will do the trick. I was very wrong!

I tried several ways to make XP boot but failed, I gave up in the end so I created myself an XP bootable disk. Took around 10 minutes to create, all fine, no errors. Put it in the Fujitsu laptop and what a surprise, it doesnt want to boot. So I tested this CD on another laptop, it worked like a dream.

So, my first question is "Why doesnt my XP bootable disk want to load on a Fujitsu laptop?"

Next, I burned a XP iso file onto a disk and tried to boot to get into console recovery. This booted up fine, did my stuff but no help to the corrupt XP on the laptop. So I thought, ok, let me try and do a repair. This started to repair the O/S which was perfect, then BOOM! a pop up message saying "Enter your serial number in...". I looked under the laptop, wrote down the serial number, triple checked it, entered it in and "Invalid serial number".

So, my second question is "Why in the hell doesnt it like a valid serial number?"

Ok ok ok, now your thinking.
"Why dont you just reinstall the O/S from fresh?"
Well, the answer to that is well, the person has family photos on there of his kids and he doesnt want to lose them.
Yes, no back up was made.

My thoughts are on that laptop is that the laptop hard drive is corrupt, a bad few sectors or something.

My brother's laptop all of a sudden showed a blue screen and when it rebooted, showed a message that I believe said "no boot sector" found or something like that. After looking for solutions online and trying fixboot in the Recovery Console (which didn't work, because it seemed like it couldn't even find the hard drive) I tried fixmbr to see if it would do anything.

That lead me to the message I have now which is "invalid partition table". The laptop is a DELL so I tried to use ctrl + f11 (his laptop didn't come with a recovery disk), but that doesn't work (I tried it many times, in various ways). I just want to get into Windows, and if possible at all save some files (he didn't back anything up). I have a DELL reinstallation disk that came from another computer, but I'm hesitant to try installing it since the "repair windows installation" feature isn't an option. Any help?

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

Hi, I've looked all over the internet in attempt to find a solution to a problem that's just affected my computer, and I haven't been able to find anything that relates specifically to the problem I'm encountering.

This hit my computer without warning, I switched it on this morning and it worked as normal, all of a sudden things started to freeze up. I restarted the computer, and now a lot of programs are refusing to open - Microsoft Office, among others, states "Error: There Are No More Files", whilst other programs such as Google Chrome and Internet Explorer state "Attempt to Access From Invalid Address", even when I am running them from their root folders.

I am running a Dell Latitude 830 with Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2.00GHz, 2M L2 Cache, 800MHz) Dual Core, 1.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS, Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 and am obviously using Windows XP. I have scanned my system with Avast Antivirus, which didn't state that there were any viruses, so I am stuck as to what exactly the problem is.

I'd really appreciate some help in figuring out what has happened, thankyou so much for your time in reading this!

I have been unsuccessful in trying to print from several programs, although nothing else suspicious has been noted. The following is what happened as I tried printing from various programs:

Opera 7.50 -- Print preview simply provides no response (sometimes shuts down). Straight print attempt = shutdown w/error msg ""has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Notepad -- "Handle is invalid."

IE 6.00 -- Print preview shows, but attempt to print leads to msg "There was an internal error."

MS Word 2003 -- Print preview shows, but attempt to print leads to msg "… cannot … problem with current setup"

I'm using XP Home. Any ideas?

When I worked at HP doing customer returns the dreaded Azures mother boards have been hated for the failure rate , I do not know why dell would pout such a *** poor product in their machine . I still have my old dell from 12 years ago it runs on window 3.4 LOL but it runs. Dell has stop! making 18.4 Alien machines due to the failure rate so why the *** will they not replace my machine with a 17.4" of like I paid over $2500 for this darn thing only to lose graphic projects before I can saving them , losing over 200 hours of work for graphics.... My Windows Xp Pro is fully activated but to my surprize when i tried installing SP1, I got an error message that my Windows XP product key is invalid and therefore I cannot install SP1.
I thought if your product key is invalid, Windows is not activated and you get reminder to activate within 15 days. But in my case Windows is fully activated, so how come my product key is invalid. What does this activation of Windows exactly mean. Could anybody please explain me that?

Thanks.

A:Re: invalid product key

There were many keys floating around that allowed you to activate XP but were not legal. Microsoft maintains a list of common keys used in this way and if yours matches, you cannot install the service pack. Assuming the key you used is one of these, you are running a pirated version of XP.
Do you recall where you got the key from? Did someone give it to you? Did you give it to anyone else?

After systme upgrade for free to Windows 10, systme did not work ex: All in one printer fax would no longer scan. After many weeks of forums and boards fell back to system reset. So recoved computer from the system image. After recovery and startup, windows activation came up to tell me that the product key was invalid. It asked again each time a recovery to the original out of the box state. It after upgrade to 8.1 is still asking for a valid product key.I contacted microsoft and discussed this issue, Microsoft did a remote access to my system and tryied to activate and after review of the product key saved in the system Bios instructed me to contact HP for assistance. Well here is the delima...no phone number to call...only forums and trouble shooting messages that do not address this issue. I will not pay for another key...if this is an issue world wide it is in my best intrest to replace it with MAC. This all started as a free activation to windows 10......Regards.
