I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Inspiron 5558, plugged in not charging with orginal dell charger that came with the laptop and 0.48 ghz instead of 2.4. I am 100% sure that the cords are 100% fine. The wierd thing is that it sometimes charges and sometimes it does not. But when is starts charging, it will not stop until I remove charger or battery. I found someone on reddit that had the exact problem with the exact things that happens to him and the exact model. I updated the bios and all other stuff on my pc up to high performance. Sometimes it will charge in 1 hour and sometimes it  automatically charges. Sometimes it take about 2 minutes to start. Once it took up to 5 hours. And Dell of course wants that easy money by not letting people buy cheap good chargers and letting them buy there <profanity> $60 chargers.

Make & Model : Dell Inspiron 1545

Problem : Unit does not charge reliably. Green LED on transformer unit does
not light up each time it connected to mains and laptop.

The green light flashes on and off on the charger when connected to the mains and laptop.

When the cable is plugged onto the ac adapter, the green light should always come on, regardless whether it is plugged onto the laptop or not.

The fact that the green light does not come on without it being plugged onto the laptop, tells me that the charger has gone and needs to be replaced!

I took out the battery and left the ac adapter plugged in, but it still would not power on, so I know that the problem is not with the battery because the laptop would have started to work!

I also took out the battery and left it without the ac adapter plugged in, pressed and held the power button down for 20 seconds, so the RAM gets cleared to perform a hardware reset, but that did not work either and it still did not power up, so I am also assuming that the system board or motherboard needs to be replaced!

Hi sergios,

Try to get your hands onto a spare AC adapter that's compatible with your computer and then test it on your computer. Please provide an update when you can, thank you.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Hi TJBAEZID,
Based on your description, I would suspect a battery failure. The battery might have reached the end of its rechargeable cycle or might have failed. Since another battery is working fine on the system, I would suspect the battery on your machine with the fault.
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional. Also, run an extended / thorough tests on the HDD and memory to check for any possible errors.

Hello,
I am having problems with the battery charging on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
I bought this computer which had a charging issue. It only works on mains power the battery is not charging.
It was thought that the Charging jack board was faulty. This has now been replaced.
I am still having problems.
The mains adapter that came with the laptop was not original Dell.
I have replaced the adapter with an original Dell PA21. The end lead that plugs into the jack has a hexagonal end.
Does anyone know if this is the correct type for this model? Or should I have a round end type? Or does it make no difference?
I can only conclude that the problem lies in the adapter and/or the Dell battery that I think could be dead and may need replacing.
Thanks very much.
Malcolm

A:Dell inspiron 1545 charging adapter

Some systems were built with hexagonal connectors - if yours has one at the computer end, the adapter should fit it. If not, you need the round connector.
That said, if the AC adapter isn't recognized and you've already tried a new adapter and a new DC jack board, the problem is with the mainboard, not the battery.

A:Dell Inspiron 14R SE charging only when laptop power is off

In descending order of probability:
Replace the AC adapter first.  Use a Dell OEM AC adapter ONLY - - NOT a third party adapter.
If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC power jack in the system:
www.parts-people.com/index.php
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter is unknown, the battery will not charge.

A:Dell Inspiron M5010 battery in but not charging

Hi pgorney, Based on the description the issue appears to be related to hardware. Try to disconnect the battery from the computer and power on the with just the AC adapter connected. If the computer works powers up, follow the below mentioned steps to troubleshoot:

Disconnect the AC adapter and battery from the computer, then press the power button for 10-15 seconds to remove the residual power.
Power on the computer with only AC adapter connected to the computer and tap F2 key repeatedly at Dell logo to enter the BIOS.
Under Main Tab please check the AC adapter type (that is if it says 65W/90W or anything else).
Power off the computer and unplug the AC adapter from the wall, and from the computer.
Ensure that the AC adapter is unplugged long enough for the LED on the AC Adapter to go off.
Connect the adapter and the battery to the computer, and then power on the computer.
Check if the battery is getting charged.
If issue persists, power off the computer and check if the battery is getting charged.

Please post the results.

When the laptop is plugged in, it does not charge the battery. The battery is new so surely the battery is not the issue. Unfortunately, the battery is at 1% now so when the adaptor is taken out, the laptop immediately shuts off. I have tried these steps to no avail:

- Shut Windows down
- remove ac adpater plug from computer
- remove battery
- Now hold down the power button on the laptop for 30 seconds
- Put the battery back in
- Plug the ac adapter back in
- Turn on computer

So I was wondering if anyone could help me eliminate some possibilities as to why it is not charging before i take it into the repair shop or purchase an external battery charger or turn it into a desktop. Thank you.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

On this laptop, I have two old batteries that don't want to charge. The computer ran fine on the battery that still had remaining power, but even though the computer was plugged in, the battery kept discharging until there was no power left in the battery and the computer shut down. I can't run the laptop off of AC power with or without the battery inside. When there is no battery in and the AC is plugged in, the power and battery lights flicker green really quickly. When battery 1 is in and the AC is plugged in, the battery light remains steady orange than turns off. When the same battery is in but the AC is unplugged, the power and battery light, light up green for half a second, then battery light flashes orange slowly than stops. Now for battery 2, when the AC is plugged in, only the battery light flashes orange four times, then green and turns off, and when the AC unplugged, both the power and battery light up green for half a second, then the battery light flashes orange four times than green. No matter what I try, I can't get the computer to boot up.

I had the motherboard inspected and everything is fine, including the jack and there is power at the adapter jack. Is it normal for the laptop not be able to run without a battery that is capable of charging? Does the battery need to be replaced?

A:Solved: Dell Inspiron 5150 not charging

check out how much voltage you're getting from the power adapter. I had an old Hp Pavillion Z something that wasn't charging a newly installed battery. When tested, the voltage was normal (19.4V). When I tried another charger, the battery began to charge.

I've read some have gone from a 60hz adapter to a 90hz, some say update bios, but I have tried everything that I can think of but the 90hz adapter. PLEASE IF ANYONE CAN ASSIST IN THE DIAGNOSIS WEATHER WANTED OR UNWANTED KNOWLEDGE IS GLADLY APPRECIATED

You mean 60 watt and 90 watt?

Only thing I can suggest other than updating the bios, is to reset the cmos, but on that model requires you to totally disassemble the laptop to remove the cmos battery, thanks Dell.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1525/en/SM/coinbatt.htm#wp1179839

Resetting the bios with the battery and AC adapter unplugged may allow it to start charging again, a slim possibility.

Sometimes it is a defect with the motherboard.

My dell inspiron3521 is not charging when I connect my AC adopter.  The AC adopter blue light automatically turns off  after a few seconds. But when I remove the battery then AC adopter works fine and facing no problem. I have done these methods but still I am unable to solve the problem

2) I updated the BIOS version A14

but none of the above mentioned procedures rectified my problem.
I can use my laptop normal without battery by just plugin its AC adopter. Please help me out regarding this problem. Thanks!

Hi MOHSINGILLANI,
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.

Based on your description, I would suspect a battery fault. If the adapter and dc port are fine, then test with another battery and check. If another battery works fine, replace the battery. If the other battery and adapter also exhibits the same behavior, then I would suspect a dc port or the motherboard.

I've recently had a few problems with my Dell Inspiron Laptop. It is plugged in to the AC adapter, but when I check the battery status I get a message saying '4% available (plugged in, not charging)'. This means that I cannot work on my laptop unless it is plugged in. The battery light on my laptop flickers a dim blue colour. I also don't want to buy a new battery for it to not work in my laptop either.

It also seems to get really hot when it is plugged in, and occasionally it will switch off unexpectedly. I'm guessing the reason the battery won't charge may be something to do with the motherboard and over-heating.

Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem?

A:Laptop lights (power/charging) - Dell Inspiron

Hi DELLUSER16486,
What is the exact system model?
The power led and the leds on front are also used as diagnostic indicators. If there is any hardware issue on the machine, these leds help isolate the source of the issue. Hence, there is no way to disable the leds from turning on, as they would be connected to a cable soldered to the motherboard.

So, just under a year ago I had bought a Dell Inspiron 15-3552 laptop and it has mostly been a reliable and durable computer. However, I've had an issue with the charger (or charger jack) twice now. The first time was pretty straightforward. It was an issue with the jack (had to plug the charger in at a certain position, computer lagged with it in, "plugged in, not charging", etc.) and I got it repaired relatively quickly. But this time around, I had an identical problem (except now the charger has stopped working entirely) but the place that I usually go to for this kinda stuff was persistent about this being a charger issue. So like anyone would, I went to best buy and bought a charger. Despite the fact that the moron said that it would work with my computer, it didn't (and the dude didn't even allow me to return it). After that whole thing, I decided that I'd just look on the dell website for a compatible charger. However, as shown by this ( image.prntscr.com/image/2ab2913161c0448b9d186f2a33b61243.png ), there was no option for an Inspiron 15 3552, leaving me very confused.TLDR, I need two answers.1) Is this an issue with the charger itself, or the charger jack?2) If it's the former, is there any way I can get a list of chargers compatible with this computer?

Last week, it became apparent that the battery in my Dell Inspiron 6000 was not charging: The battery light flashes yellow intermittently while the computer is plugged in (both while it is on and while it is off), and flashes orange if I unplug the AC Adapter. Here is what I've done:

1. Checked the Dell Quickset Battery Metter -- all the fields (total battery charge, primary, and secondary) were grayed out)
2. Checked my Power Management settings. It's set to activate a low battery "text only" alarm at 10% and to go into hybernation at the critical battery charge of 3%.
3. Checked the Power Meter -- The total power remaining is "Unknown." Under the batteries available, it says "not present."
4. Pressed the status button on the battery -- all lights lit up.
5. Ran Dell Diagnostic Express Test -- got the "Error Code 0F00:136C - IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive."
6. Ran Dell Diagnostic Symptom Tree and chose the symptom "System will not run off battery" -- All tests passed.
7. Ran the Dell Diagnostic Custom Test for the battery and the sensors -- All tests passed.
8. Downloaded the Inspiron 6000 BIOSFlash A09 and tried to run it -- Got the message "AC Adapter and battery must be plugged in before the system BIOS can be flashed" over and over again.

I have removed the battery, replaced it, etc. I don't want to buy another battery if it's not necessary. And I do... Read more

I will try again with posting this. I dont see anything against terms or rules in my post. I would like some advice and opinions on this issue and if my grievance is reasonable?
I purchased this laptop in early December 2014. I would like to add that this laptop cost me close to £1000 when purchased. Purchase was direct from Dell.
2 days ago, the laptop developed a fault where it would not longer accept any charge from the charger.
No notifications or messages on the laptop informing me of any faults with battery or charger.
I use this laptop for work and i am self employed- this is a very important tool for me and my business will come to a halt without it.
I contacted customer support and through diagnosis they inform me that the motherboard needs replacing. The charger when plugged in, has the green light come on but when plugged into the laptop the green light on the charger flickers and turns off. I am told the motherboard is sending a current back and causing the fault, preventing the laptop from charging.
Dell are asking me for £600-700 which is nearly the cost of the laptop new. An engineer will come out and replace the board.
This is completely and wholly unacceptable. The laptop is just over 2 years this month- It is a £1000 machine and was a high spec, premium multimedia laptop from the 7000 series which is supposed to built and made to a high level.
This is not an entry level budget laptop. I would expect a battery or charger to fail after this p... Read more

It could easily be just the DC jack

If it's not that, then the mainboard needs to be replaced as you've been told.

Well, the charger is plugged in, but it says not charging. This has happened twice. I would have thought bad battery or bad charger, except luckily the first time it occured right after buying a new hard drive. I did a hard reset on the battery and that worked.
Now, it has happened again. I tried the regular battery reset, but that did not work. I tried uninstalling device and reinstall..did not work either.
Oddly, what did work was the following:
I had about 38% battery left. I unplugged the power cord from both laptop and wall outlet.
I removed the batter. Computer went dead.
I wiped the battery connectors with a clean cloth several times.
I put the batter back in and turned the laptop on with battery only.
I plugged power cord into side of laptop, then into wall outlet.
Immediately, the laptop began charging again!
I am not sure why this worked. Maybe some techy out there may know. When I tried the battery reset, I turned the computer off before taking out the battery. Then took it out. Plugged in laptop with power cord and powered it. Then shut down and placed battery in. I turned back on..but nothing...
It may have to do with having the laptop already on when taking out the battery, or placing back the power cord, or could just be the wiping the battery with cloth????

A:Battery plugged in, not charging...(found the fix that worked for my Dell Inspiron

Hi thelights007,
Please share the system model and the operating system installed. The error 'plugged in not charging' can be caused due to various reasons such as faulty adapter or faulty charging board.
You may try below mentioned steps which may help in fixing the issue. Steps to perform Flea Power are:

Power off the system.
Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the battery from it.
Press and hold the power button for 20 to 30 seconds to release the residual charge from the laptop.
Reconnect the battery and the AC Adapter.
Once the system is powered on and booted properly, re-seat the battery. Check if you still get the error or not.
Boot the system to BIOS, tapping the F2 key on the Dell logo screen when you power on the system.
Press F9 key to load BIOS defaults. Once done, press F10 key to save and exit. System will restart. Check if the error is still there.
Try and wiggle the AC Adapter cable and check if that makes a difference.

If it still doesn't work, parts replacement may be required.
Hope this helps. Please share the findings.

So I ran into the old plugged in, not charging problem with my laptop about a month back. I hoped it was the charger, but upon getting a replacement 65-watt charger, the problem persisted. I assumed the fiddly bits on the inside of the laptop had given up the ghost, as I've had that issue before, but when a friend plugged in his 90-watt dell charger it worked like a charm. I'd rather not have to go buy a new 90-watt charger, but I will if I have to.
Also, I suppose I should mention that I'm using a 5759 with no modifications. Also, I used to get an error message every time I plugged in a 65-watt charger though it doesn't show up anymore for whatever reason and I can't remember exactly what it said. Something about it not being recognized or somesuch. Same error message with 3 different 65-watt chargers.

I have had my Dell laptop for almost two years now. I replaced the battery before the warranty expired (1 year?). The battery was working fine, but I was starting to have to jerry-rig the angle of the power cord in the socket to charge the battery. I purchased a knock-off AC adapter replacement. I started getting error messages almost immediately when booting up that cord might not be compatible with the laptop. As it was working, I didn't worry about it. The power light start flashing in a particular pattern then, which it has been doing for months (three fast orange flashes and one long white flash). Historically, a white light has meant "charged" and an orange light has meant low power. The AC adapter became increasingly less efficient in charging the battery until it ceased to charge it at all. I purchased the Dell AC adapter recommended for the newest version of my laptop model. There was no noticeable change. (I understand from Dell that the problem may have been that I purchased a 90W adapter, compatible with newer versions of this model, but that I should have purchased a 65W adapter as my laptop is older.) I returned that adapter to Dell and then purchased a re-furbished Dell 65W AC adapter through Amazon. Again, no noticeable change. The battery is taking absolutely no charge from these cords. As I remove the power cord from the socket, the computer instantly shuts down.

When I hover over the battery icon, it says the battery is 0% charged and that ... Read more

I have recently purchased a new Dell Inspiron 15 5578 2-in-1 Laptop. When I plugin the charger, the battery is only charging upto 60% and after that it says not charging.

I have tried to install the Dell Quickset software and changed the settings in battery management software and tried all the ways I found in forums. Still I am having the same issue.
Can anyone had the same issue & solved it.
Please help me to find out the solution for this.

Just bought this model a month ago. At first, I thought there isn't any LED Indicator in this model for charging/ HDD activity modulation but later when I saw the guide, I noticed an indicator just below the touchpad. But, the catch is that it isn't glowing at all. Even while charging, I tried the hotkey combination (Fn + H) to toggle that light but to no avail. Any idea as to how to activate this light?

Hello to all of the Dell Community!
In our hands we have a Dell Inspiron 7520, to which the battery does not stay in the charging port and is loose, to which it often falls out and the computer switches off.
In retaliation to this, i have ordered a new charging port, but also have noticed that, their is originally a small rubber ring which is missing, which is normally in front of the charging port, on the laptops casing and looks like it keeps the charger in the port, preventing it from sliding out so easily.
Where in gods name can i find this small little piece :D it has been the hardest thing to look for and find, an can not seem to get it anywhere! or know of the proper name for it.

Regards
MJ

A:Dell inspiron 7520: Loose charging port, missing rubber ring insert

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
Can you please confirm when you say charging port you are talking about the battery not staying in its slot and keep falling off.
This small rubber ring that you are talking about if it is from the adapter end would be a part of the adapter and not a stand alone/separate part and if its on the system then it would be a part of the panel .
Kindly private message the service tag and email address.
We would also like to know the system was dropped or damaged in any way.
Thanks
Robin

Can someone help me with this problem? So I just received my brand new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 and the battery is not charging. It says it's "Plugged In, Charging" but it never goes up and stays at 0%. At first I thought I just need to plug it in for several hours but it's been 5 hours now and still the battery stays at 0%. I tried running the BIOS Diagnostics just to see if there are problems and there's none. The battery status says everything is running normally and the Battery State says it's Idle. I tried draining the flea power several times, removing and reattaching the battery, but to no avail. I'm getting really frustrated and I'm really close to throwing this laptop back to Dell.
I read somewhere that I have to update the BIOS but it won't update unless the battery is charged at least 10%. Someone also suggested that Windows 8.1 is causing the problem. I haven't even started using this laptop and it's already giving me a *** ton of problems. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys! :)

This new Dell Inspiron 11 3147 just arrived today.
The AC Adapter is "plugged in" but the battery is "not charging."
I've looked all over for help for this, Dell Diagnostic has found no problem, and I've had trouble getting a hold of customer service. The most commonly suggested idea has been to uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft ACPI Complian Control Method Battery driver, which I have done.
The only thing I haven't messed with is the battery itself, which doesn't seem to be accessible without damaging the back, which is screwed on and secured well.
Any idea what's wrong?

A:Dell Inspiron 11 3147 Battery "Not Charging"

Update to my below post:
One day later, after the battery fully charged and all was well, I come back and it is back to the message "plugged in, not charging". I might see if reflashing the bios and rebooting will work again.
My original post on Dec 8, 2014:
I had this problem until this morning. In short, I updated the bios to Version A03,A03 (released Dec 2, 2014). Before that I did all the googling and messing about without success. Here's what to do:
1. Run "My Dell". You can access this by type Ctrl-Esc and then type in "My Dell" and clicking on the "My Dell" icon that comes up.
2. Click on the green "Drivers and Updates" panel. This should open a product support browser window.
3. Scroll down to the bottom beneath the section that says "These drivers match your selections" and click on the arrow next to "Bios"
4. Click on "Download file". Close all your other applications and run the file and follow the prompts. It will reboot for you at the end and the problem should be solved.
Good luck!
Ben
