Preferred Solution: My Laptop keeps turning off every 10-20 minutes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you checked your power settings? Also either download Speed Fan or Hwmonitor. In order to check your temps. Sometimes you will not see a warning for your laptop over heating. It will just shut it's self down.

Both softwares can be download here at Techspot. Under downloads.

A friend of my brother accidentally broke his Laptop the other day, and I'm trying to see if there's anything I can do to repair it. I'm not exactly sure what he did, but when he broke it, it apparently broke the monitor and killed the hard drive. Replacing the hard drive isn't that big of a deal, and he says he doesn't mind using an external monitor for it (though the monitor does still work, though it has a large crack through it now... which you can see here http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/oo151/Superbark/Photo-0009.jpg ).

Unfortunately, whenever I try to turn on the computer and run some things like diagnostics and whatnot, the computer keeps randomly shutting down. I think the fan is still working (since I can hear it), so I don't think it is overheating or anything (I could be wrong though, but the bottom never feels scolding hot or anything). Here's the strange thing though; whenever I plug in the Laptop and I have the battery in, the computer will turn on just fine (though it will shut down in a couple of minutes, like I mentioned up above). If I try to turn it on when the battery is out, but still plugged into the wall... it won't turn on. If it is not plugged in, but the battery is placed in, it'll turn on (then shut down in a minute or so). If I have both the battery in and have the Laptop plugged into the wall, then I remove the battery... it'll still work, but still shut down again in a few minutes. What'... Read more

Hey BP

Is there a utility to stop my monitor from turning off after a certain of minutes?

A:How to stop the display from turning off after a certain minutes

I believe that you are refering to the screensaver that clicks in after x amount of minutes.Go to control panel, click on personalisation, click on screen saver.Their you will see a wait till probably ten minutes.Alter it to what you want.I have mine at twenty but the option is yours. This was more for the older type of monitors to prevent a image being burnt into the screen.

Hope thats what you are refering to.

Hi All, A couple of weeks ago we have a strange behavior with our Lenovo Flex 2 Pro. The notebook is turning off at exact 30 minutes, in the BIOS or in Windows this is make no differents. Now i googled a lot and found a lot of the same problem and all replaced the mainboard. I hope offcourse that we don't need to do that because the mainboard is around 350 dollar. Specs of the notebook:Lenovo Flex 2 Pro 80FL (I7-4510U) Already tried:- BIOS updated- BIOS resetted- Intel ME Firmware upgraded- Windows repair - Virusscan + Malware- Monitored the heat of the laptop- Replaced the cooling paste to be sure of the CPU and GPU- Removed a lot of components to test what the problem is (SSD, Audio, SD reader, Battery, CMOS battery) Hope one of you have a solution.

First of all:
1. This computer has NO VIRUSES and NO WAREZ and NO INTERNET EXPOSURE.
2. This is not a laptop.
3. My Brother from Michigan sent it to me by mail, and I am guessing that is the reason this computer is so ****ed up.

Ok, well this is a very expensive computer (would be able to play half life 2). And well, after my brother sent me it (by mail), it seems to act like a god damn 80 GB Ipod (low battery life in under 1 hour etc.....). But of course, I plug in the device with all sorts of computer cables, and the same results happen. After a few minutes the god damn computer turns off!

When I set it to 115 V this happens!

So I set it to 230 V and well the BEEPING miraculously disappears! But then the monitor doesn't turn on.

*****!!!!!!! I am so mad!!!!!! And I am not a computer genius.

Can somebody help me resolve this?

i'm going to make this quick before my computer crashes again

basically my taskbar stops responding and i can't bring up the task manager to perform any functions and my apps perform very slowly even though the processor is only working at less than 20%, but if i bring up the task manager before the crash happens i can turn off explorer.exe and have the applications work normally without explorer but my internet does not work any more

i don't know if it's related but recently my firefox browser just keeps crashing and then asking me if i want to restart (it does this about 3-4 time before i can actually use it)

i try to run anti-virus but when the taskbar stops responding everything else stop so i can never get through a scan, so i don't know if it's a virus or something similar, which is why i'm posting it here

please can you help

I know this has been asked a million times on the web already but its seriouslly annoying me now.

Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) keeps turning the monitor off after 15 Mins of in-activity.

However - before it does that at 14 Mins and 30 Seconds it sorta does a quick flash - then at exactlly 15 mins does the turning off.

All the power options are set to Never. (I have even created my own power plan for this)

I have never had this problem on this PC before - this is a new install - and since then it has been doing this.

(That makes me reluctant to think its the BIOS or Video Card)

Any ideas would be most welcome?

Thank you in advance.

Hi I think it might be your monitor's setting. Also check in the monitor's menu if you have any power saving options enabled.

Whenever I turn on my computer, the internet doesn't work for the first 15 or so minutes. It used to be able to work right from the start, but now it doesn't. Is there anything I can do? I tried looking to see if my drivers were outdated, but can't tell if they actually are.

I have recently done a system restore to a factory state. After reinstalling all of the programs I noticed that right after restarting my computer it actually is pretty fast, which can be especially seen by rght clicking on desktop or opening folders. However, few minutes after running it suddenly slows down simple things like right clicking on the desktop make me wait few seconds. Right now my computer has been running for few minutes already and I can see the text lagging a little as I type.
I have Avast, and I did a quick scan with malwarebytes just to make sure, but it didn't detect anything.
When I check the task manager I noticed that before it starts lagging, the CPU is below 10% if im not doing anything and even when when using some programs its pretty much always below 60%, however after it starts lagging, it jumps to 100% if I do as simple things as right click. I disabled most start up programs, but it didn't help. Any help would be appreciated.

I began to suspect overheating and so I decided to clean out the fan. So far no problems with lag anymore. ^^

I am running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit. Whenever I set the option "Turn off the display" to "Never", it reverts back to the default "15 minutes". This is under the "High Performance" profile. I have never, since Windows 3.11, ever had a setting change itself back. I have tried to change it and restart. It will either revert upon restart or shortly after. It will revert back even if I do not restart.

A:Power Option for "Turning off display" remains at "15 minutes"

That sounds like my problem - I leave the computer for an hour and it is shut down (I think sleep mode). I just need to hit the power button and it comes on to where it was when I left - but 2 of my USB devices are lost so I have to restart the computer anyway.

I changed all the power settings to NEVER. But his doesn't seem to make any difference......

I have a Dell Inspiron 15r 5520

It all started last Friday when the dreaded "Plugged in, not charging" happened. Little by little I had the laptop plugged in and eventually the computer just failed to work. I opened it up and pulled out the Ac/dc power jack and low and behold a port wire is broken, so I replaced it.

I also tried to turn it on after that, then I found out the Power Button was broken, so I replaced that.

After replacing all of that the Laptop refuses to turn on.
I do have a charger on the way and now I'm wandering: Should I have the charger plugged into the computer while I wait for the other one to show up, or should I keep it in and attempt to charge my battery?

My lights for anything will not turn on at all, so I'm also wandering if the motherboard is dead? It would be a shame if it is since I just purchased a replacement last summer.

1. Charger stopped charging and became a plugged in not charging
2. Replaced Power Button and broken Ac/dc powerjack
3. Computer fails to turn on
4. No lights down at the 4 light panels even when charger is plugged in.

Thank you in advance if you are able to assist me in this issue.

A:Laptop not turning on

Techtitian mate first is there any sound coming from the machine when you power it up?

Mine usually clicks away at the optical drive before cutting to the HDD

If I thought it was the HDD I would be installing a new drive and use this

Forinstalling I prefer a disk to be honest but if you want to try again this isthe one to follow
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 makesure it is the right version ie Home Premium or Ultimate whatever you have acode for and then the language and do not use the ones with a large"N" or "old" beside them. If you are wondering why the N itis because that will not include the Windows Media Player and while it is notmuch to get it it is tedious.
You can use a disk or USB stick with this.

Not turning on, meaning it has a black screen?

Test AC Adapter output. Check the AC Adapter jack.

When you first turn the PC on, can you hear the HDD to spin up?

If you hear the HDD, turn off the power, then try to Power Cycle. Remove AC Adapter and battery. Hold down the power button for a minute or two. Install battery, AC Adapter, and try to power up.

If screen is still black, try in Safe Mode. Anything yet?

I have a Gateway M305 laptop and I used to be able to press the power button and my laptop would turn on immediately, but all of a sudden it stop turning on right away. The light does turn on anytime my AC adapter is connected. Once my laptop does finally turn on it works perfectly so I don't won't just get rid of it since it still works great once it is on. I'm just afraid that at some point it is just not going to turn on. I also noticed that it takes longer to turn on when it's been off for a while. My sisters sony viao stopped working the months ago because my nephew poured milk on it. They took it to a shop but it couldn't be fixed.

The other day i thought i might aswell try it. I took the battery out and tried to turn it on, and it worked!

I turned it off once it loaded up. Today i tried to turn it on but it wouldn't turn on!

Does anyone know why this is happening?

A:Laptop not turning on

There is a possibility that the liquid spill on the laptop has not dried up properly, this is the reason after several months and you tried it and it work but after shutting it down ity no longer works again. There is a possibility that corrosion on the parts of the motherboard is causing this problem. I woould advise to have the motherboard checked by certified technician or contact Sony to have it fixed or replace the motherboard (you will be paying for the repair since the damage was customer induced).

Just purchased this computer two weeks ago. I turn on the computer, open word, type for 10-40 minutes and boom, it restarted, all my work, poof gone, this has happened the last few days. Yes I know save early and often, this really tests that principle. Computer is not hot, no graphics load, just windows and office running, did a full system scan with antivirus program, it's clean, not actually online when this happens. It is an AMD A10-9600P Radeon R5 processor, I just turned off auto updates for windows, it has to ask me now, just in case that was the issue. Never had issues like this before on an HP machine (this is my 6th), but I suspect it it a windows 10 issue, since it sucks in every possible way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:My laptop is not turning on

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery, and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall both memory modules.  Power up on AC only - if it will, but won't with the battery in place, the battery is faulty and will need to be replaced.  If it still won't power up, the mainboard is bad - on a system of this age, it likely would be better to start thinking about a replacement system.

Also tried to start it after removing the battery but of no use. Please kindly suggest a solution.

A:Laptop not turning on

Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check for any possible beep codes.
Disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to release any static power. Then test the system with the adapter only / battery only.
Remove both memory modules / HDD and power on the system and check if it detects the absence of memory modules.
If nothing works, I would suspect a motherboard fault.

I have an EiSystem 4405 laptop 2.4 Ghz Celeron processor with a 30 Gb hard drive, 256 MB DDR RAM.
One night i was on it then it just shut down
I thought it might have been a cooling issue
So I left it off overnight and tried turning it on the next day and it didnt come on
I opened it up and tried cleaning out the fans as I heard this might improve cooling but that didnt seem to do much
The battery by the way is dead in it so I have it out
I left it off for a few weeks and tried a new power cable and it turned on
I put the old one back in and that worked too
So i thought maybe it might be the connection that connects the power cable to the laptop

A:Laptop not turning on

Remove the power adaptor (and battery if it was in)
Hold in the On button for 30secs (dispersing all internal power)
Put the power adaptor back in
Try turning it on

Otherwise Yes, hardware issue, with connector or adaptor

I don't see any obvious problem there. If the laptop shuts down when you're using it that's a problem but if you are inactive for a while and it shuts itself down in the meantime it may be because of the Power settings that have been selected under Control Panel.

The computer does not turn on. Sometime ago I noticed that the white LED light on the power button was not on but the computer was turning on and working ok otherwise; so I did not pay attention to it. One day the computer simply did not turn on at all. I removed the battery and kept the laptop connected to the wall and I tried resetting by pressing the power button for up to 2 minutes before trying to turn the laptop on again, but it did not work. I let the computer sit for two days and it turned on when I pressed the power button (although the LED light on the power button still remained off). The laptop worked ok for two days and when I tried to turn it on on the third day, nothing happened. There is only a steady white led light, right next to where the AC cable connects to the laptop. I would be grateful for any help with this. For some reason yesterday my laptop just decided to cut out & turn it self off. When I restart it in safe mode with networking it seems to stay on but if I try to load it with normal windows it just cuts out.

I think it must be some kind of software issue but I don't know where to start trying to fix it. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

A:Laptop keeps turning off

Well, there could be quite a few causes for this.

First thing I would suspect is a driver issue since the PC works in Safe Mode. Usually you would see a BSoD (Blue Screen of Death), but if your system is set to restart when this error occurs, you won't see it. I would first check to see if you have this set up to show BSoD's: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

In that tutorial make sure that the computer is not set to automatic restart.

If you get a BSoD when the computer shuts down now, we will have a place to start from.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 which I had for about two years. My operating system is Windows Vista. For the last 7 months I had a pop up saying that my battery is coming to end of its life and I should order a new one. However, at this this point I carried on as normal and may laptop was working completely fine. However about a month ago my laptop just would not turn on even though it's plugged in and my charger has the blue light on. There is no sound, no light or anything, just does not turn on at all. Then after a week it suddenly did and it worked completely fine. When I tried to turn it on the following day it did not turn on. I then ordered a new Anker battery compatible with Dell Inspiron 1545 and my laptop worked completely fine for about one week. But now I am having the same problem when 50% of the time it would not turn on but the other 50% it does work. Also am not sure if I am being paranoid but when my laptop does turn on I feel as if my laptop is quite hot. In addition, whenever i use my laptop I always have it plugged in, i hardly use it as portable.

Thank you
Much Appreciated

A:Laptop sometimes not turning on

I would have to say either the a/c power cord is bad or theres some sort of a power supply problem somewhere.Or the new battery might not be the exact match for the computer.I wouldnt use it anymore until you are able to have it checked out because of it running hot which it shouldnt be.

Can someone please help. My brand new Dell laptop will not power up no matter what I try. I plugged it in and nothing happens . The green led on the power supply glows constantly and when I plug the jack into the laptop a white led on the front left glows for about a second and then goes off. When I press the power on button nothing happens - no lights, no noise, nothing. I've left it on charge for several hours but still nothing.
I have tried the static discharge test (remove battery, press power button etc) and still no luck.
I really don't know what else to do.
Can anyone help?

Hi Jomar,
Good work on troubleshooting. I would suggest you reseat a few components, like memory, hard drive and optical drive and see if that makes a difference. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating components.
Please let me know if this helps. Also, do private message the system service tag along with registered owner's name and email address. To send a private message, click on my name and select ?Send private message?.

Every half an hour my laptop turns off. It has NEVER sat on my bed. It stays on my desk. It only a few months old so no dust is in it. I moved the RAM to the second slot. I updated all my drivers. It does that with and without using the battery. I changed the power options to never. I made sure the CPU has thermal paste. I installed SpeedFan and its not showing the computer overheating. I've ran 3 virus scans. I've fixed the registry 4 times. I defragged the harddrive. I have no clue what to do next. I've done everything I can think of. Can anyone tell me what to do next?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

I've fixed the registry 4 times.

Please do not mess with the registry or run any registry cleaners as it could cause some big damage.

Try doing the following: go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > in the popup box type: chkdsk /f and restart.

Are you sure your power settings are set to stay on and not go into sleep mode? Has the computer ever shutdown as your using it?

My laptop isn't turning on and I'm not sure what to do. I've tried the trick of taking the battery out and putting it back in, which used to work but now it does not.   When the laptop is plugged in the light does turn on showing that it is charging.

If you press the power button while the computer is connected to a charger? Do you feel any vibrations from the computer? Do you hear the fan spinning? Any sound coming out from the vents? Any blinking lights from the capslock key or power button? RegardsNorman

Hi All,

I am using HP Pavillion dv3005tx. I am using this laptop since 2 years without much trouble. However recently there were few important updates that i downloaded and installed. After few days i shut down my computer to complete the installation.

But now when i start my computer, i can only see light flashing at the front but I dont think my hard disk is working. So in short my computer does not start at all. Only lights flash at the front near keyboard but nothing is displayed on the screen nor is hard disk running.

I tried to remove battery and start my computer with power cable but it still does not help. Please advice any quick solution. I need laptop for urgent use.

Thank you.

Just re-read your post...

If you cannot enter safe mode, and you are not offered option to enter bios configuration, it would indicate a hardware failure.
Could be several kinds of hardware issue that can do this.
(Including memory failure, hard drive failure, etc)
Do you get a beep-code at power-up? If so, this may help us.

If you can see your option to enter bios, but cannot enter safe-mode, it could indicate a corrupted windows, or perhaps a failed hard-drive.
Try entering bios configuration and see if your bios is finding your hard-drive.
If so, then I would suggest attempting a restore, after running hard-drive diagnostics.
If not, then my first guess is a failed hard drive.

Let us know the answers to these questions.

My laptop is having a problem, Whenever I turn it on it's bottom lights flicker 3 times and then it doesn't boot up. The screen doesn't come on, But it is charged, It I tried removing the battery and putting it back in, But it wasn't successful, I am not sure what kind the laptop is though, Although I'm quite sure that it isn't a Dell Laptop. The laptop has 200 and something gigabytes, And it doesn't contain any viruses, If you have any clue of what is happening to my laptop please explain, I'd greatly appreciate it. :suspiciou

I fixed it I charged it.
