Unable to enter BIOS - Lenovo G580 Laptop

Q: Unable to enter BIOS - Lenovo G580 Laptop

Hi

I got a new Lenovo G580 laptop which did not come with any pre-installed OS. I installed Ubuntu in UEFI mode (I had not disabled UEFI/Secure Boot). Later I installed Windows 7. During installation it asked me to format the entire format as it did not recognize the GPT partition. Accordingly without thinking twice I erased the entire HDD and installed Windows 7. Now I am unable to enter into BIOS

Things I have tried:
Tried with F2, F1 and Delete keys while booting
Tried removing the battery and booting while pressing the above keys individually
Tried removing the battery and adapter, held the power button for 1 minute
Tried removing the battery and held the power button for 1 minute while the adapter was plugged in
Tried pressing F12 and going to the APP MENU but I can only see "Diagnostic Splash" Nothing else and in that diagnostic splash screen I see that the System BIOS is "shadowed"
How can i gain access to BIOS so I can disable UEFI and install Win 7 and Ubuntu side by side

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a G580 running windows 10 and I'm getting an error message when trying to start. It says unmounted boot volume, and then restarts.  I'm trying to acces the bios so I can boot from a USB or DVD, but it won't let me access it because of the fast start.  However the computer won't fully start for me to disable the fast start, so I'm at a total loss for what to do.  I tried the novo button but it's just sending me to the normal boot screen.  Where it says the same thing.  Thanks so much for the help!!!

Hello, The Problem:Recently I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS  to my HDD in UEFI mode. Soon I found out that I could not access the BIOS using F2, but F12 allowed selection of boot device. Reinstalling Windows, I found out that the boot menu still had the Ubuntu entry and I still could not access the BIOS. I searched on the web for a solution and before I could manage to find a proper one, I managed to delete both the ubuntu and windows boot manager boot entries, still locked out of bios. This time I could not boot into any OS, could not access bios using f2 nor access boot menu using f12.  The Solution:There was one last hope, during boot I noticed that PXE (Boot via ethernet option was still showing).Note: This solution requires you to update the BIOS. This is a very risky procedure, so proceed with caution. This will also probably void your warranty. If you can access boot menu (F12) and want to regain access to the BIOS (F2), boot into Windows 7. Install a bios update for your laptop (specifically for your laptop) available at The Lenovo Support Site. The oldest BIOS (probably for Windows 7) is preffered. If you donot have access to windows 7, perform step 2 and boot into the created ISO by creating a bootable CD or pendrive. Then goto step 11.If you can't access F12 and F2, cannot boot into OS, but can boot via Ethernet (there should be a message about trying Atheros Ethernet PXE Boot during startup), start from step 1. Update: Even in the newest BIOS Update 62cn97ww (for Lenovo G580), Ubuntu causes the same problem. I came across a solution on the internet, that works without having to update the BIOS if Ubuntu can be accessed. To fix it, boot into Ubuntu (should be installed on the system), start Terminal and type in the following commands:sudo grub-install
sudo efibootmgr -b 0 -BReboot and F2 should work. BIOS should be accessible through F12>Tab>Setup also. Ubuntu will boot no more but can probably be fixed.

Hello Everyone, Its a much discussed yet embarassing problem. I have a G580 with intel i3 processor. The machine is quite old (5 years i think) and has been subject to various OS upgrades, changes, flashes, dual boots systems like ubuntu & windows. Recently to upgrade the machine i bought an i7 processor (yes it is compatible, i checked the hardware manuals). Once installed  the display wont come on, i figured i needed a BIOS update. Thats where the terrible stuff started. I tried using the BIOS update tool downloaded from the official lenovo website with windows 10. As soon as i launched it, the command prompt like window opened and my computer froze. That happned a few times. Figuring, it might resolve itself I left it alone for 3 hours but it was still frozen. Also figuring that the tool is for windows 7 i ran it on compatibility mode. Still the same result. I read on some forum a guy had the same issue and it was resolved by reverting to windows 7. So i bought a new copy of windows 7 (yes i really want that i7 processor). Installed it and tried to run the tool. Still, it froze the minute the window opened (another 3 hour gesticulation time was given to he machine to unfreeze itself but in vain). So i tried to access the bios to see if there was a supervisor password preventing me from entering. Thats when i discovered that i could nnot access the bios at all. Ive attached some screenshots in the end to explain. Startup... Read more

My rule of thumb with BIOS updates is "if it is not broke, do not try to fix it" because there is always an inherent risk that a BIOS update can fail, and if so, leave  the system bricked (dead) requirnig a new motherboard, and there does not appear to be anything in the latest updates readme.txt other than specific fixes for Windows 8.1... So I would hold off. Summary of changes

hi adarsh_savant,

I think you may have concern in this thread,
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/G580-Bios-update-problem/m-p/1199186/highlight...

Here the suggested solution from neokenchi that helped.

1. Boot into the BIOS by repeatedly tapping F2 on startup

2. In the BIOS, navigate to the Boot Tab and set UEFI to Disabled or Legacy then press F10 to save and exit. When
the computer reboots, check if you still get the errors and/or if you're able to boot into Windows.

3. If same problem, leave the changes that you made on Step 2 and attempt to re-install Windows via a Windows 8 recovery drive or OneKey Recovery button (note that this will wipe the computer to factory settings)

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

Hey, I'm currently using a G580 Lenovo laptop. One day I played my laptop and supricely it just turned off, so I turned it on again and once I typed my password to access the PC it turned off again, so I got the battery out the PC and waited five minutes, after I got the battery back I pressed the power button and nothing happened, no lights, no noice, nothing, just not turning on. I tried to find my problem on the internet and I found a youtube video how to fix that: get your battery off with your charger, press the power button 1 minute, get back the charger into the pc and press the power button and ta-dam! It's working. Well no, I did everything and it didn't solve my problem. Any ideas?

Hi Eliaszzq ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Since you have performed power drain, you may proceed with the power check as described under your hardware manual (page 21).

As it should indicate led status lights or fan activity removing the battery and directly plugging the ac adapter. See if pressing the Novo button instead of the power button as it should also be an alternate on powering up the system.

Using a known good ac adapter or checking the original charger with a voltmeter can help isolate whether issue is with the adapter itself , wall socket / strip cord , DC in port is loose or there's contact failure , power board / systemboard failure.

Just the same, as it is a power issue calling in technical support for inwarranty repair or checking with local service center can be the next step after the power check out.

Update us how it goes.

I've waited more than a day with just the blank screen. I tried running the lenovo diagnostic tool and found that SMART quick test got failed. further I tried to search and recover bad sectors, It ran till 95% but process got very slow after that.. its still 95% even after 2 days, and I see more than 65k bad sectors. It looks like my harddrive has gone bad, when I removed the hdd and booted laptop using my windows 8 bootable flash drive, i got the windows install screen (when i did the same with HDD installed, it dint show the windows install screen.) Would it be fine if I bought a replacement HDD and install windows on it? I dont know where my windows 8 product key is and somewhere I found that its in BIOS and the new windows install should recognize it automatically.  Also would any HDD work for my laptop or only selective ones? Hello all, this is my first post here so apologies if it is in the wrong category.

I have been trying to repair a laptop for my friend that cannot boot up to windows. It is constantly going to Startup repair and whenever I try repairing windows with USB it always fails.

Now I am trying to access the bios to change the boot device to the USB drive so I can do a fresh install of windows.
Here's my issue, the laptop will always go into the startup repair mode without giving me the option to enter the bios.

Will removing the cmos battery resolve this? ( I want to avid this option as it means opening the laptop, since it is not my laptop. I may find it difficult even locating the cmos battery)

Any other ideas how I can access the bios?

- Edit -

The laptop is running windows 8.1 x64

I had a strange set of circumstances today. I was trying to update my memory from 2 to 4g. My system would not boot with the new memory and the bios gave 3 beeps. After removing the new memory, the system would boot to XP but I had no video. I powered down and powered back up. I now had video but the system would hang. In Safe Mode, it would hang after the following entry system32/config/system. Note I never observed any windows error messages, just the hang.

I used the Recovery Console from an XP CD and did a chkdsk /r and chdsk /f
I also ran fixboot

None of these solved the problem.

I then ran fixmbr
Recovery Console displayed some kind of caution message that I had a "invalid" or something MBR and that it might prevent me from access partitions or something.

Well, I ran fixmbr anyway since i was out if ideas.

Now when I try to boot, it is freezing during the post process. When I hit F2 to enter the BIOS setup, it says "entering setup" but it never does. It seems to be hanging right after the drive detect process.
Note I have one standard IDE drive © and 2 SATA drives. Windows XP is installed on one of the SATA drives.

Any ideas? Let me know if you need any more info.

A:BIOS Hang, unable to enter BIOS Setup after running FIXMBR

This sounds more like a BIOS = hardware issue. Since you have been inside the case it is possible something got nudged loose. Re-seat your memory and video card if it is an add-on.

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer and enter BIOS menu.
If the issue persists even after performing Flee Power, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance this is the only available option to get this query resolved, Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number, I?m sure they will be a great help.

Hi.Is Windows 8 installed on your machine, or is it running through a USB device? If 8 is installed on your machine, then make sure you do a complete shut down of your machine. To improve boot times, Windows 8 does a hybrid boot, meaning it keeps certain things running. To do a full shut down of the system, you can open Command Prompt and type "shutdown /s /t 0" (without the quotes.) This will do a full shut down (cold restart). It seems whenever you are rebooting/shutting down, it is only doing a warm restart which will skip BIOS.Let me know if I can assist you further,Adam

Any help will be appreciated as i have totally messed up my PC (win xp home sp2)
I intended to re install windows on my c drive as a fresh installation to format my hard drive .
I pressed the delete key and entered the BIOS to set it to boot from CD and tried to install windows. It wouldn't boot from CD so i stupidly went ahead and installed win xp home anyway. It installed a a partition on my c drive still leaving the original files intact. Now when i start my pc i get a choice of 2 windows xp installations but the arrow keys on the keyboard do not move. 30 seconds countdown and widows opens in the new partition.
pressing delete now does not work so i cannot get into the BIOS.
I would still like to format my pc.
i now have 6 floppy disks to boot from floppy but i can't get into the the BIOS to set it to boot from floppy disk.
Help please!!

A:unable to enter BIOS

if you are able to boot from your floppy i would say get a MSDOS boot disk with that you chould be able to get to a command promt and use Fdisk to delete the partitions and remake one to use for new install, also note if you use fdisk to delete and remake partitions you need to do a format c: at the prompt so you can use the partition also the windows xp installer should have a format system with it if you can boot from that install cd you can delete the partitions from there as well when you choose what partition you want there should be an option to delete them as well.

i hope this information is helpful.

but neither work as the keyboard does not seem to be working i.e.No response from any key, no caps lock num lock lights showing. Key board works fine on other PC.

Have removed the battery and cleared CMOS by altering the jumper setting but still back to square one. Tested battery voltage is OK
Hard drive OK have also tried a floppy drive but still no joy with it fitted, even tried with no drives connected but still get same result. I have taken the MB out of the case in case something was grounded. Still get the same results.

Hope some one can help as I donít know what to try next thanks in advance

I have an older HP Pavillion AV976AV desktop PC that when booting immediately enter the Windows startup. I've tried every key possible to enter the BIOS. Every once in a while I could see the splash screen that describes the setup key, but only for about one third of a second. I finally videoed it and was able to stop the action on that split second, and I see where F10 is supposed to enter the setup, but it doesn't. It simply goes into Windows almost instantly. Does anyone know how I can enter the BIOS setup on this machine?

Dear Someotherguy or any expert who may help me,When I powered up my X230, I pressed 'enter" to get access to the startup interrrupt menu, unfortunately I am unable to choose my options listed in the interrupt menu, no matter I pressed F1 for bios set up or F12 for boot options, it led to a black page shown initializing boot agent with version shown with a cursor blinking, and I was stucked there, I need to power off my laptop and restart, there is no problem of entering the OS but I have no access to bios setting and I can not reinstall my OS with USB boot. I am grateful to anyone who may help me of aforementioned.

A:X230 unable to enter bios set up, need help PLEASE

This issue should be fixed with version 2.x of BIOS for T430/T530/W530/X230/X1C

For X230 there is BIOS 2.02 that solves this issue.

If you go with the ISO version, it may be necessary to physically remove the HDD to get the system to boot to the CD.

Hello,
I was upgrading a friend's Computer with a new CDRW ( Liteon52/24/52 and 128 Meg SDRAM. The Computer is an old Gateway, Pentium 433Mhz. I hooked everything up and then it started happening !
I started getting a weird error about " WIndows is not in good configuration" and so on. I checked all the connections, and everything is good. I have the Hard drive on Primary Master, CDRW on Secondary master and CD-ROM on Sec. Slave.
I disconnected everything and tried to put it back the way it was, but now I can't even access BIOS ! I keep hitting F1 and I see it blinking at the bottom " Entering set up" and then I get a long beep and then two short ones and a display on the screen :
" B: Error". I know that F1 is for entering BIOS because I entered it prior to install to see what the configuration was.
I tried to boot with a start up disk, and I get the same error," B: boot error, hit F1 to resume". If I do that then I am able to get to the set up screen, but if I try to access C:\ it tells me that " This program has caused a device flow error, please contact system vendor". I tried to boot with just the floppy and hard drive with the same result.
OS: Windows 98, BIOS Chip : Intel/AMI ? Hard drive: Quantum Fireball 13GB. Onboard LAN, Graphics and Sound

Please help before I have to replace this computer...
Thanks in advance

turned on computer and found my onecare was not opening up. Onecare removed several viruses yesterday which is not normal since I do not go online much with this computer. I didn't write down the names. I completed all steps in your guide and used all the programs you listed as well as, I went to the Onecare site and ran the update malware repair and got onecare working and ran it and removed Ferbink.B and Ntlin.A. Didn't find anything online about these. I did HiJackThis and removed about 6 items,,,once again, did not write them down. Down below is a copy of the latest HiJackThis and it appears the only file to come back is ctfmon.exe which I believe is for my windows office software. The comp is working fine and onecare is working but I can still not log in to safe mode or bios. It appears my keyboard does not function until windows is completely loaded. Nothing happens when pressing f2 or f8 and once I made it to the screen that has the selection for safe mode, by turing off then on the computer before it shut down properly which made the computer go to that screen on the next boot, but my up and down arrows did not function and it automatically went to regular windows after timing out. Also tried to boot to my windows disc but when the screen read "hit any key to boot from cd" the keys did not work and it booted to the drive....by the way it says "invalid boot ini". It appears I need to rebuild my boot.ini but don't know how to do that since I can not ... Read more

my desktop is a AMD A6 3500 Triple Core 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM
Motherboard is ASUS f1a55-m le

I'm trying to enable crossfire with my Raedon 6670 graphics card and the APU. I beleive I need to change a setting in BIOs to 'onboard' graphics because at the moment the system is only recognizing the 6670 graphics card and not the APU graphics as well when I plug in the 6670.

My problem is that I can't enter the BIOS. When I load up I press Enter but all I'm left with is a black screen, I've tired pressing ESC, F1 etc but no luck.
There's not even a boot screen image on load up (of ASUS logo and menu at the bottom outlining which key to press for bios etc) which there was on my previous computer.

I have it hooked up to my HDTV (PC> DVI adapter>HDMI cable>HDTV)
It was suggested I tried running the HDMI directly from the 6670 discrete card but no joy I still can't access/enter the bios screen

Are you pressing the "delete" key when the post screen comes up? To my knowledge, to enter the BIOS on any system, that is what you have to do.

I have an Acer Aspire V3-772G laptop.  Upon powering on the device, it sits with a blank/black screen.  The fan is running, but it doesn't appear to be able to get past POST. The first time this issue happened, it sat like this for about 30 mintues and then suddenly the ACER logo appeared and it booted to Windows.  Once Windows was running, the device worked 100% without issues. The next time this issue happened, it sat like this for about 2 hours and then it booted normally. This time I have let it sit for ~12 hours and it will not boot. I've done a lot of searching, including this community.  This post seems very related: http://community.acer.com/t5/V-and-VN-Series-Laptops/Aspire-V3-772G-bricked/td-p/462723 What I am attempting to do is recover or update my BIOS using the Crisis Disk.  I've followed the exact steps that others have provided (power off, unplug, insert thumb drive with bios .fd file, hold fn+esc, plug in, power on), but the laptop doesn't do anything. The thumb drive light illuminates for about 5-10 seconds, then goes off and nothing shows up on the screen.  Does this model support the Crisis Disk? I can't do anything in Windows at this point, so any BIOS recovery from Windows is off the table.  Is there anything else I can try besides tearing the computer completely apart to pull the CMOS battery?  Watching videos it looks like you literally have to take off every single ... Hi. I've got Lenovo G580 (20150) and I'm trying to install the geforce graphics card present in the system. I don't know exactly what the gpu model is but it's something akin to Geforce 610M. I've got Windows 8.1 installed and the drivers from Lenovo support page for this laptop don't work (I tried drivers for Win 8.1/8/7). During installation the drivers installer says that it "couldn't find appropriate hardware". I also tried various drivers from sites like driveridentifier but none worked. I even installed Win 10 and Windows Update found but couldn't install the drivers. I also have  Win 8.1 freshly installed. It's definitely not an OS problem. I also don't have recovery dvds/partition... Here are the graphics identifiers:PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&SUBSYS_397717AA&REV_A1PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&SUBSYS_397717AAPCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&CC_030200PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&CC_0302

My g580 ran out of battery while using it, and now it gets stuck on the lenovo logo. I tried a different hard drive which changed nothing, I've tested both hard drives on a different computer and they both work. However when I boot the laptop with no harddrive it will get past the logo go to a screen saying something about an unplugged cable then reset and get stuck on a blank screen.   If I plug in my windows recovery usb drive( and no harddrive) the the machine will boot normally and go to the windows installation screen. So any ideas on why a working harddrive would stop the system from booting? Also I've tried the whole taking out the battery unplugging it holding down the power key and then plugging it back in thing, did nothing.
