I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have recently acquired a Dell Vostro 460 i5-2400 with the onboard Intel HD-2000 graphics.
I am wanting to upgrade the graphics card to support HD video streaming and some gaming.
Searching through this Forum, I have found information about supported cards (using the existing 300W PSU), but many of these are too old to but new. I have also read about the nVidia GTX 750Ti and Radeon R7250 working OK with the vanilla Vostro 460.
I have a budget of about £50 and am considering the following cards which appear to be compatible with a 300W PSU:
nVidia GeForce GT 730
nVidia GeForce GT 720
Has anybody had an success/issues using these cards with a Vostro 460? I am open to other recommendations or suggestions that fall within my budget.

A:Vostro 460 i5-2400 Graphics card upgrade

Just seen a post made by a member yesterday on the same topic! This member bought a GT 730 and it appears it is not compatible with the Vostro 460. A reply stated that the following cards are tested and compatible:
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 420
ATI® Radeon® HD 5450
ATI® Radeon® HD 5670
pci-e cards are tested by Dell and are compatible. GT730 is not tested.

If possible, please can somebody add a list of more modern cards that are tested as working with this desktop?
I might just have to bump my budget to £100 and get a GTX 750 ti (assuming this will actually work!?)

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10.   The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers ,  some higher.   Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade,  windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen)  it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung.   Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point .  So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8.   Why not fix it.

A:Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).

Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?

I've got DELL Vostro 3750, and I bought Dell U2515H monitor for second display.
I can set only maximum 1920×1050 resolution, instead of the optimal 2560×1600 of the monitor.
I'am connected them with hdmi cable.
Please help me solve the problem!

A:Dell Vostro 3750 with Dell U2515H monitor resolution problem

The U2515H HDMI in port can do up to 2560x1440 60Hz. But the U2515H does not dictate the resolution. That is done by the capabilities of the laptop GPU video card. The 2011 Vostro 3750 HDMI out must be limited to 1920.

I have done the custom settings for battery from dell power management. I have set that the battery should start charging when it is at 50% and stop charging at 80%. When the battery has charged 80%.It has stopped charging. But the discharging of the battery is not happening itself. I have to remove the ac power so that the laptop should start using battery instead of ac power. The battery should self discharge when it reaches 80% and start charging when it reaches 50%. which is not happening currently. Can any suggest any solution.

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to assist with a problem that suddenly started with my second computer (Dell Vostro 400)
Its running windows 7 home premium and all the sudden it now stops at the Dell bios version screen. It did this a couple times the lastfew days, but when I restarted it, it booted ok, but when I checked on it later then the computer was frozen again with a black screen.  I have borrowed another computer from work and swapped out the hard drive, and it works fine with the other computer (same hardware). So I dont think its the hard drive. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Drivers & Downloads

You might be able to find a better driver on the intel site - the above drivers may need to be installed in compatibility mode with wxp if they wont install normally, and unzipped first - this will let them install on W7, as it resolves the OS mismatch.

To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

This is the install instructions from the site you may need to follow this (its for one of the drivers) :
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R86399.EXE.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86399. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86399 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

*If you can locate the info file in the folders you unzip you could update it thru device manager - find the graphics device - expand it - right click - select update driver, and then browse computer and find the folder with the info file in it.

I would use caution in making changes to the Dell Dimension 2400. It seems to me a better choice would be to start with a new case and build your own. There are simply too many problems with the 2400.
It is too small to install proper cooling. It doesn't have adequate room for a motherboard with a new cooling fan and CPU.
If you don't replace the motherboard, you have power supply issues where many others will not work in that unit. Memory is barely average. The Dell 2xxx series is among Dell's highest failure machines... with motherboard, cooling fan, and CPU issues.
Careful shopping at www.newegg.com, www.tigerdirect.com, www.directron.com, www.CDW.com, www.compusa.com, www.zipzoomfly.com, www.outpost.com, www.techdepot.com, and a few others will enable you to put together a better system for about the same money you would spend on the Dell Dimension 2400... and you could sell the Dell to somebody for $125 to $150 with a little luck.

I bought my Dell Vostro 3800 ST almost 2 years ago, sadly I didn't really do my research before I bought it, and it turns out, card that came with it wasn't really great for gaming and it's nearing the end of it's life.
So I'm planning to buy proper card, but my tower is waaay to slim to fit in it comfortably.
So my question is, will I be able to take my motherboard to another, non-Dell case? If so, what type of case would be good? I did try to find online, what type of motherboard it is, but if there's an answer to that question, I can't find or understand it.
I'd be grateful for any help provided :)

A:Will my motherboard from Dell Vostro 3800 ST fit into non-Dell case?

It's more or less a micro-ATX board so it will likely fit a standard case.  That said, wiring the power switch, hard drive LEDs, etc. will be difficult - they're not standard and it may be a lot of trial and error to make work.

Go to this site http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen, enter your service tag number (should be on the tower sticker) and you can download all the drivers you need.

You should install the chipset drivers first, then video, audio and network.

I need major help. I have a Dell Diminsion 2400 that will not boot. Actually I am working on (or trying to atleast) it for a friend. When you plug the monitor into the video card that is on the bus, the computer shuts off. I have a PNP video card that I took out of my computer and put in his just to see what happened. The cpu booted (or at least I think it did) but the video card was not recognized. I took a video card out of a dimision 2400 that I had stuck back as a backup, and tried it in his. Now when I try to turn computer on, it comes on for 1 second, shuts off for 5 seconds, then comes back on. Problem is, is that it does not boot. I thought maybe it was a video issue, but now I am not so sure. Can anyone help. If this is not where I need to post this please let me know where I should post it.

A:Dell Diminsion 2400

Hello Dawn:
The hardware forum is where hardware experts will find you.

When did the computer last work well? What changed; adding / removing hardware or software? Was the computer moved?

What happens if you turn on the computer, without the PNP video card, and without the monitor connected? Does the computer still turn off? If no, connect a different monitor to the onboard video port.

Is there an adapter between the plug on the monitor cable and the onboard video port? If yes, replace the adapter.

Is the PNP video card VGA or Digital?

How long, after the boot process begins does the PC turn off?

Are there any beeps?

Are there any smells like something burning? Any smoke or history of smoke from the PC?

Between the time you turn on the PC, with monitor connected to onboard video, with PNP video card removed, and the time the PC shuts off, is there any video output; do you see the Dell splash screen?
1. Dell's support site for the Dimension 2400

2. Generally, when one inserts a video / graphics card into a computer, the onboard video is disabled, automatically.

3. Are you inserting a PCI, AGP or PCI Express video card?

Finally If the computer is under warranty, consider contacting Dell.

Keep us posted.

I'm on my brother's laptop at the moment. my desktop experienced a moment of complete failure.

i was on my computer, and i popped in a cd to update my video drivers, and then rebooted. upon reboot, the computer started getting pissy. it would show the dell boot screen, then it switched to a completely blank screen with nothing but a blinking cursor. i tried hitting a few function buttons, but it only beeped backed at me when i pushed a button.

i sat and waited hoping it would finally load windows and boot to my desktop. no such luck. it simply refuses to boot windows xp. i don't think it's a hardware problem. all of my stuff was working fine up until that restart. but i can't think of what's wrong.

if this computer dies on me, i'm screwed for like 4 months. i have to buy my own computer, so if this dies, its game over. and i don't feel like having to reformat again. its the one solution i know will work, but this happened once before and i want to figure this out once and for all. what the hell could be wrong?

well first I need to know the socket (it is either 478 or 775) the easyest way to do this on a non-working system is to remove the cpu fan. and look at the socket the socket type is usually stamped on the socket.
Here's a link to dell explaining how to do this http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/mprcsr.htm but leave the cpu (stop at step 9 do not go on to step 10) in it's socket untill you replace the motherboard to prevent damage

My Dell deminsion 2400 keeps shutting itself down.
Somebody told me it may be the motherboard.
Do yall agree? Or what do you think the problem may be?

A:dell deminsion 2400

Could be the motherboard, but it sounds like you could possibly have a faulty power supply. I guess it'd also be possible for it to be overheating, but only if the heatsink is not on the processor properly(or is filled with dust), or if the fan stopped working altogether. I'd "borrow" a power supply from another computer and test in the dell to see if that fixes the problem.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 computer. This system comes with an Intel Celeron 2.7 GHz processor 256 MB of ram and a 70GB hard drive. The other day I was reinstalling Windows Xp on this system. Everything was going ok for about 30 minutes when all of the sudden the computer just shut itself off. I did some investigating and found that my heatsink was so hot to the touch I could not hold it without a pair of gloves on. I removed the heatsink and processor and I noticed that the thermal compound was very runny almost like water.

I have not had any issues before this with this computer. Can anyone inform me why my heatsink got that hot and why my thermal past got like that?

I am going to apply new Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

A:Dell Dimension 2400

Check your fan. With the Dell passiver cooling system the fan must be working perfectly to pull enough air across the heatsink for cooling. I don't recall exactly how any air inlets are arranged on the chassis, but pull the front cover and make sure everything is clean for air to enter the case.

I have an old dell dimension 2400- and to my knowledge is riddled with viruses- which sits unused as it takes too long to do anything, turning on alone is atleast 11 hour. My knowledge of computers is limited but, correct me if im wrong, i was going to replace the hard drive to remove the viruses. It would also be great if you could recommend other new hardware to improve it so it is useable. It would be perfect if I could upgrade it to be more powerful than my laptop so the laptop could be used for mainly portable purposes and the Dell for games etc. As i said my knowledge is limited so if someone could explain how i would go about these upgrades/send me a link to a video explaining it i would be extremely grateful. Money isnt a huge issue but obviously the cheaper the better.
Thanks in advance for any help you can supply.

A:Dell Dimension 2400 CPU

I would like to know which processor for the Dell Dimension 2400 can use the highest number of ram size and what the size of the compatible ram is. As of now, my Dell Dimension 2400 has the Intel Pentium 4 and I want to make my computer faster.
The Dimension 2400 supports a maximum of 2gb [2x1gb modules] of DDR RAM.
The Dimension 2400 can use either 400MHz or 533MHz, Socket 478, P-4 Northwood, or Celeron processors with a 512k or smaller cache.
The maximum processor size is a Socket 478 Northwood P4 3.06GHz 533MHz FSB processor.
The 2400 will not take Prescott processors [1mb cache].
Prior to upgrading the processor check that the latest BIOS version is installed, with BIOS version A03 Updated CPU microcode was added to support latest CPUs.

A:Dell 2400 CPU upgrade

The best CPU for Socket 478 was the Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4 GHz (Gallatin). It will be difficult to find one.

There are a couple listed on eBay.

Not worth the upgrade though. I would suggest that you wait till you have enough cash to change your entire rig.

I want to do a NVidia GeForceFX 5700LE: (Clear on this)
I want to install a 1G of RAM: (Not clear)
But I am sort of unclear on this am I PC2700 or 3200? Because if I got two 512's i'll be two 2700 as to 1- 1G 3200 I need help on this.
I want to install a 2nd HD and an additional rack if needed: (Sort Of not clear)
Will the computer reconize it?
Keep the original 40 GIG for OS only. An additional 250GIG for games and media.
WiFi Card:(Very Clear)

But I want to know if the computer just reconizes it?

All of this should come up to about 500 total

Sound possible to you?
I really want to bring this computer into the 20th Century and I need to make a gaming computer that I can play GTA on with full resolution or Doom 3 on a mediocre resolution etc.

A:Dell 2400 Upgrade!

I am pretty sure its all possible, but I'm not an expert. Only thing I'm not certain on is how to upgrade the processor. The limiting factor may be your FSB speed.

Video Card -- First thing to know is that the Dimension 2400 has no AGP or PCI-E graphics slot, so you'll have to buy a PCI Graphics Card. I got a GeForce FX5500 256mb PCI card off ebay really cheap.

Memory -- Your machine sounds like its a touch newer than mine (I have a P4 2.2GHZ processor), so I'm not certain on your memory but mine has PC2700 memory. If all else fails download the system scan from Crucial.com and it will tell you exactly what memory you have, but you can also check the CMOS for the memory bus speed too.

Hard drive -- 2nd hard drives are easy. You'll need a new cable as the OEM one has only one drive connection, but once you get power and the controller connected, boot into CMOS, turn on the primary slave, then go into windows and poof it is there. You'll have to format and partition but that's pretty easy from the MMC. I run a 20gb 2nd drive to which I back up all my documents/pictures/personal data. You will need a Dell HD bracket to mount the drive, but you can get those off ebay for ~$10.

Same process for installing the DVD burner...

WiFi -- As for the WiFi card that is literally plug and play, particularly if you have the XP service pack w/ the wireless networking utility.

A:Dell Dimension 2400 help

if your system supports PC3200 and you have PC2700 in it now, then the PC3200 you add will run at the speed of the PC2700.

I'm a newbie when it comes to wireless capacities in computers. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that doesn't seem to pick up wireless internet. Do I need a special adaptor for this?

A:Dell Dimension 2400

You need a wireless adapter. Pretty sure that model didn't come with one standard. Do you have a PCI or USB wireless adapter?

Hello Guys and thanks for replying! I have a Dell Dimension 2400 which I want to reconfigure to original factory settings, I think I have all CD's originally shipped, but need help in " What is the correct sequence to upload all the Cd's ? Ie. Operating sys, BIOS, hardware , ect etc...Thanks for your time....

A:Dell dimension 2400

The Dell Dimension 2400 desktop appears to be 8 - 10 years old, so reverting it back to its original factory condition is going to revert it back to a very outdated condition.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker?

What's the exact version of Windows XP(including any service pack number) that's on the Microsoft COA sticker?

The Windows operating system would be loaded first, then any necessary device drivers would be loaded next.

Make sure to first disconnect any unnecessary external devices, such as a printer.

Ok i just bought Vista and installed it everything works fine except it looks like im running in safe mode i know the dell dosnt have a agp or pci-e but if i upgrade to a pci card will it improve it at all? and if so what what card should i pick up. I only use my pc to browse the web and stream my dvds to my 360.

A:dell dimension 2400

yes, for what you need try the ATI radeon 9250 good budget friendly pci card. unless you want to use Aero, then you need a card with Pixel shader 2.0 support, im not sure if the 9250 has pixel shader 2.0.

I am trying to repair a Dell Dimension 2400 computer that belongs to my brother. I am fairly knowledgeable of computer building/repair, because I build my own. However, I have never dealt with a Dell Computer before. From the symptoms he describes, my first suspect for failure is the power supply. I have a spare 450 watt ATX power supply in my closet that I would like to sub into it for troubleshooting, however, I see that some Dell Computers use a proprietary supply and that a standard ATX supply will cause damage. From what I see on the internet, it looks like they used proprietary PS's on older machines only. Anyone have an idea whether this computer uses a standard ATX PS or whether you must use a specific Dell PS? Thanks for your time and assistance.

A:Dell Dimension 2400 Problems

Dimension 2400 does not use a proprietary PSU. A standard ATX PSU will do.

Lately, whenever i turn on my computer a message pops up with all the computer info, 2 beeps, and a message stating,
"Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility..."

Option 1: click F1 key, a second message pops up saying :
"A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

If you proceed and do the control alt delete combo, the computer restarts and this happens again {-_-}...

Option 2: "Strike" the F2 key only to be brought to a screen with options like this:...

Drive Configuation..................................................... <ENTER>
Hard-Disk Drive Sequence........................................... <ENTER>
(Good examples i know)

And these continue down the screen and some geeks will know this to be the "Setup Utility"

Considering that this is my best option other than doing something to the actual Hardrive i need some help/assitance with this problem because im no geek at ALL.

by the way i looked up this problem and the closest one i can find was found here...

But seeing that this is closed and the guy with problem use to fix missile guidance systems... i find myself much behind either of the dialouge that the moderator and this man are having... Think someone could let me in on the "basic" ways of fixing this?

i am trying to upgarde a friends box, he has a dell dim 2400 with a 2.19 ghz intel 4 and 128 meg dd ram. i am trying to upgarde the ram. i have tried 5 sticks now. i tried a 1 gig 3200 stick, but figured maybe the motherboard couldnt handle the dim so i went down to a 512 stick, which didnt work, and now i am trying 2 256 sticks, which i tested on my box this morning. when i try to boot off the new sticks the motherboard just beeps, and it wont boot. if i put in the old stick to boot off of it and then a new stick it says "memory not expected lessing available memory" or some such **** a few times and then stops trying to boot. i am not sure if it is the board, or the bios. supposdly the machine can handle 444 ddr ram upto 1.2 gigs. any help would be wonderful as none of the people at dell seem to know what they are talking about

A:ram upgrade issues with dell dim 2400

Well, here's the spec sheet for your pc.
It seems the max ram for your system is having 2 512mb dimms of pc2700 ram.
pc3200 should work though, since it can downclock to pc2700 speed.

Are you replacing the 128mb or adding this in addition to the old ram?
Do you know the new ram is good?

I have a Dell Dimension 2400. I currently have 1Gb of RAM installed (2x 512Mb). Recently, I visited the Crucial website to system scan my computer. Unexpectedly, I found out that my system can hold up to a maximum of 2GBs! I couldn't believe it so I did some more researching. Most of the sites, (crappy memory sites), and they all say it can only hold 1GB. I would really really like to have 2Gbs or Ram. But I don't want to go and spend all that money and find out I can only use 1. I need help with knowing whether I can get 2gbs of ram. If anyone has a 2400, please give me some info. Thanks.
