Remote Desktop in Window XP Home Edition

Q: Remote Desktop in Window XP Home Edition

I have a desktop PC running Window XP Home Edition and my laptop has XP Pro Edition. I want to use my desktop as the host computer and would like to run "Remote Desktop" so I can access the desktop via my laptop. I've been told both that it is possible and that it is not. The reason given for not being able to do so was that the "host" computer has to be running the Pro Edition. Is this correct and if not can anyone suggest a good site with a "good" step by step setup for doing this?

Thanks! David

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You can only use remote desktop to remote into a Windows XP Pro computer. The only way you can remote into a Windows XP home computer is to install a VNC application. I suggest using UltraVNC.

I have been using Remote Desktop on XP Home edition for nearly three months. I have been told that Remote Desktop on XP Home edition will expire after 90 days of use. Is this true and how do I tell how many days I have left? I use it to connect to work daily so I can't afford to wait until it expires (if indeed it does). Thanks for any help.

A:Remote Desktop on Home edition

Why not use UltraVNC, it never expires and works on any version of Windows.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3. I have the XP disk and have followed the instructions for installing the Remote Desktop from the disk. But when I go to do the installation, I'm told the Remote Desktop is already installed. But it is not installed.

Before I got the "correct" instructions and located the XP installation disk, I tried to unsuccessfully install from a download from Microsoft.

What do I need to do to get Remote Desktop successfully installed?

Thanks.

Hello,
I am trying to access my Laptop using Remote Desktop, but unfortunately after hours of troubleshooting I gave up :-(
I hope the following feedback of what I've done or observed will help solve this issue:
- No listening on TCP Port 3389 was displayed after executing netstat in cmd line

- Remote Desktop Service in services.msc is set to automatic and restarted several times
- TermService running in Task Manager with PID 1196. Netstat shows however that UDP is listening on port 5355 for that PID

- RD access is activated accordingly in the system control panel.
- Deactivating the firewall didn't help
- May be an important observation : Since following two drivers are not listed under the Device Manager:

Remote Desktop Services Security Filter DriverRDP Winstation Driver
I found those two under my windows 7 pro OS on another PC and in several postings in internet related to this topic.

Thanks in advance for your help !!

Alex

Hi

I am trying to remove or change my name from on a laptop in the Windows 7 Home Edition Registry. I found I cannot remove it or change it in the HomeGroupProvider ServiceData in the Registry. If you try to Delete it or change it I get - Unable to delete all specified values - any ideas??? it show up in three different ones. NetworkName , Owner and OwnerMachineName and three different HomeGroupProvider ServiceData places.

Do not want to reload Windows 7 since do not have Discs and Activation number on bottom is too worn to see it all.

There should be a way to access these values and change in the Registry. Something is not allowing it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, I am having a problem on my computer, it was fine 2 days ago, until around the afternoon it suddenly got slow and then it wouldn't let me left click/right click on tabs, like File, view, edit..blah blah blah...or drop down menus...I can't delete files, or check files, or copy and paste either...It's taking over every program and some programs that I open, i'm not able to shut them down unless I shut down the entire computer, and The computer is also reading a network.exe error....that happened about a week ago? i'm not sure what thats about...But yeah, we can't left click or right click on any tabs...so it makes the computer pretty useless for anything in particular...If anyone has heard of this and knows what to do, please send me a reply. thankyou.

Hello ksingh

Welcome to TSF

Your Sony Vaio has come with a preinstalled bundle package that has a
hidden recovery partition. In the event that you need to reinstall then you can do so by select
Start\All programs\vaio Recovery Center\Complete System Restore
Your PC will reinstall using the partition and it will be exactly like you purchased it.

Also sony have a great website that allows you to download preinstalled bundles so if you accidently wie your hard drive you can redownload the full content of your PC back to the way you bought it

You can find that web site here, it is perfectly legal and all software is suited for your particular model you enter

A:Installing Window XP home edition SP2

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Your issue sounds like it's an "Update" problem and not malware related. Let's make sure though..

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
*Note* For Ad-AwareSE also install the VX2 Addon Cleaner To run this tool once Adaware is updated click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK" , then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.

I recently setup a new Windows 7 machine (brand new Skylake build) and swapped the displays from my old machine to the new machine, and started working on the old machine via RDP as I migrate things slowly.
What I found by trial and error is that usually within 20 minutes of using Remote Desktop from the new machine, I would get the Aero Performance warning. I see dwm.exe consuming 100% CPU of a single core. This boggled me because I have a fast machine, with
an ASUS GTX 580 Matrix GPU (nVidia) that performs very well. I am using the latest Geforce drivers.
Once it happens, dragging Windows is a very hitchy experience. Nothing works to recover. If I start the Desktop Window Manager service, it'll go immediately to a high CPU state. I have to reboot to clear it up. If I dont use RDP, it never happens, but within
minutes of opening the RDP session, there it goes again. I can stop the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service to workaround the problem.
One more symptom. Once, before rebooting, I decided to uninstall the nVidia drivers and try reinstalling them. The installer complained that no compatible display adapter was found. I had to reboot in order to reinstall them. This almost sounds like a flaky
driver or GPU, but this GPU worked fine for the past couple of years in another box (though that doesn't mean it didn't go bad since).

Well yesterday I got my Windows 7 upgrade. So ever since been frustrated I plugged in the DVD started my computer and went for a clean install (I had already backed up all my files), only to notice that it kept being stuck at expanding files at 0%. I tried my 'internal DVD player' and an external one. I went to sleep so it's been over 8 hours and still no change. So I thought to reinstall XP, download the updates and then install from within XP. It now got stuck at 68% while 'copying files'.Today I've been trying to setup my external USB HDD player as a boot drive, but it keeps saying 'BootMGR' is missing. I'm following the steps described at: http://dotnetwizard.net/vista-stuff/tips-h...lashhard-drive/ and found a few others with similar descriptions (tried formatting both NFTS and FAT32) but none worked.Oh and of course I checked if my system is capabable of running Win7, which it is.Anyone any suggestions?

A:Restricting user access to hard drives in Window 8 HOME edition

I'm guessing lack of feedback means it's not possible to do this -- is there another way to secure the files? I can't move them from the hard drive they are on -- they're too big to fit on the drive associated with "my documents."

Mate the best thign to do (And depnding how keen you are) is to create a proxy/firewall server (I use IPCop because its free and has VPN access allready (Open VPN)) with some cheap old computer with 2 network cards.
Its really easy to install and configure, there are heaps of tutorials on their website.

Also the next thing is, i am assuming you are using a ADSL connection at the work premises? If so then you simply create 2 interface connections throuigh IPCop, one being RED (Internet facing) the other GREEN (Internal network facing). You assign 2 ip networks RED gateway would be like 192.168.1.254, the ADSL LAN IP would be like 192.168.1.1, they are both on the same subnet.
The next thing is assign a new DHCP scope on the server (Or not as long as it isnt of the 192.168.1.0/24 network) and ipcop will route them 2 subnets.
The enxt thing is to create sopme SSL certificate through ipcop (very easy) add an account with a password, and when you get home you downlaod/install OpenVPN client, unzip the ssl cert you created and place in the folder (Its in the instructions) and then make the secure connection.

I might actually do a full screen by screen tutorial one day because we get this question all the time on this site and this is a great free alternative which doesnt make a direct connection to the server from the internet unless its authenticated.

You should forward the ports on the router to the IP Addresses of the machines, that you want to connect to. On Symantec PC Anywhere, it is ports 5631 and 32, on Windows remote desktop connection it is port 3389 that needs to be forwarded.

Re: Desktop icons ? When I right-click on the desktop and choose Arrange icons by name, it does not seem arrange them. I do see them give a little jiggle, but they do not change positions.. Always checked there is Show Desktop Items. If I uncheck that, the items disappear from the desktop. If I choose Arrange by Type or any other, I can see the icons do their little jiggle, but when I go back to Arrange By, just the Show Desktop Icons is checked. So whatever, I check, all it will show is that. But none of the icons move on the desktop. It is as though they are locked.

When I right-click on the desktop, to Display Properties, Desktop Items, and the Web tab, Lock Desktop Items is not checked.

Not sure what I have done to cause this. Dell restored the computer to its original state two days ago, and I have downloaded for hours (Windows updates, Hijackguard, Registry Mechanic, Spybot, and others), and I also went to the Settings in Display Properties and changed the Screen Resolution to 800 by 600 pixels, as the fonts were so tiny in Windows. Also the Color Quality is set at Highest (32-bit).

I can move each icon manually. Jeez, hope I made this clear enough. Thanks much!

So somewhere along the way, I messed up and do not know where. Maybe you would.

Hello, here is my problem. I created a 2 gigabyte virtual disk partition, but for some reason had issues when it came to copy files that were on the same drive as the partition file. The details are sporatic:

- The partition file is on the same drive. The files are being copied from one folder to the partition, when "mounted" (opened for use/decrypted) the the partition file appears as a disk drive.

- I am running the computer as administrator. When I access the folder from which the files are being copied lets call this "Folder-A" the properties of the folder have all the files listed as "read only."

- I turned off my two antiviruses AVAST and AVG, both freeware, and turned off my DSL modem. Which is really a router, Verizon just calls it that! It's not a modem Verizon, its a darn router. It says so right on the device!

- What happens is that I am able to copy one file from Folder-A to the partion the pgp-partition/virtual disk. Then if I copy anything else from the same source drive (the had drive both are on) it doesn't work. The copy stalls, then my system stalls, and I have to manually restart!

- I have two other smamller virtual disk that work fine. One is 100MB and the other is 300MB. They both work 100% ok!

- The file being copied is a pgp self-extracting. The two other virtual disk work fine so I doubt that has anything to do with it.

What could it be? I've ran a dis defrag on the HD, scanned them all for viruse... Read more

Hi,

A long time ago I started looking into this because my mum has a PC with XP Home on and I am running XP Pro (both fully up to date), however I seem to recall reading that you couldn't remote into a XP Home machine, only into a XP Pro machine, is this correct?

Ideally I would like to try and sort this out so I can sort out any problems with my mums PC if/when they arise without having to try and talk her through it on the phone which can be quite difficult at times.

Any advice or pointers would be very much appreciated.

PS. Not sure if this would be better suited in the networking forum or not? If so, feel free to move it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

For a number of months now my Mum and Dad's computer has been playing up and randomly reseting itself, even when not being worked hard or getting too hot. For example, just now my Dad was typing out an email and had just sent it off and it switched off and flipped back to the Windows Startup screen. It doesn't appear to be related to any particular type of software either, since I have been able to multitask on it myself using Windows Media Player and a number of IE7 windows, whereas when my Mum or Dad have been on it, they have been using very little power from what I can gather, only using 1 IE7 window at a time and using Microsoft Outlook on the odd occasion.

The specification of the computer is as follows:

2002 Windows XP Home SP2
1.8Ghz Pentium 4 processor
1.2GB DDR SDRAM
64MB Geforce 4 MX440 Graphics Card
40GB HDD connected via IDE
DVD-Rom
CDRW

As you can probably tell this is an old machine (bought in 2003) and so is well out of it's warranty. Are there any replacement parts which need to be added to make it more stable or would it be best to do a complete rebuild of the system ie. reinstall Windows.

Cheers,

Andy.

if money is not a problem upgrade
get a can of air and blow the dust out paying paticular attention around the fans and heatsinks
post what the bios lists for temps and voltages
always include the power supply in your specs they are not much use without it

Hi,

Currently when to try to remote desktop to a Windows 7 Ultimate PC, all the active windows and moved to a single screen, even though before i connected, there were active windows on both screens of the PC. Have anyone else come across this issue?

Thanks.

A:Remote Desktop does not save window position for Windows 7 Ultimate

I think that's because when you connect to a remote machine, it doesn't provide you with both screens. RDP does not give you dual screen access.
So if the remote machine has 2 screens and your client machine has 2 screens, it will still only open up the remote session on the one monitor.
Hope this makes sense.

This is for RDP users

Hi, I am trying to "as Administrator", change a user password.  i get authentication error has occurred.  i was always able to check the box user must change password at next logon... then I would logon using the current password - then
be prompted to change the password... this doesnt work anymore.  It is possible a tech person made a change.
Can you tell me where to go to check settings that would allow this function to work again
Thank you,
Lisa

I am trying to use Remote Desktop to connect from my WinXP Home Edition to my parents WinXP Home Edition. Both computers are set to "allow remote assistance..." and to "Allow users to connect remotely...", however I encountered an error that said the client could not connect... I suspect we did not have it configured properly.

I have a few questions:
1. Is it possible to connect between 2 WinXP Home Edition machines using Remote Desktop?
2. I am using the IP address for the computer name...is this correct?
3. is it necessary to enter a User Name and Password in the Remote Desktop configuration?
4. How do I find out the Domain?? Is that the same as their ISP?

Thanks in advance!

How's everyone doing?

My operating system is xp home edition and I unwittingly deleted my remote desktop program. It was only used to access a computer that ran on xp pro, so there wasn't a problem using it, and I don't need anything else fancy, just my old RtD.

Unfortunately, I don't know how exactly to reinstall it. Any help would be appreciated!

I wish to use MS Remote desktop to control my home desktop. My home desktop is setup with a four computer LAN. The LAN is connected to the internet through a router. I wish to use my laptop, on the road, to connect to my desktop at home. I have been told i will have to use some Dynamic DNS software and servers. Is this so? If so any suggestions?

Any way to add Remote Desktop (host) to W7 home?
I upgraded to home premium and now found that I can not remote desktop TO this pc
Obviously I could upgrade from home to PRO but didn't know if I can just "add" RDP to this home PC at all
I realize there are 3rd party software vendors I can use (think I saw VNC, mesh, go2mtg, etc)
Any thoughts, suggestions?

A:Any way to add Remote Desktop (host) to W7 home?

Hi there
NO -- this is a BIG disappointment to zillions of people who get computers loaded with W7 Home from stores.

It's almost a universal requirement these days that people want to access HOME computers from the Internet / Work etc etc.

There are "3rd party options" like "Logmein" etc but some work places now block these sites and ports and aren't in any case a true alternative for RDP.

There were "get arounds" in Windows XP HOME (XP PRO always allowed RDP as a Server rather than a client) but they seemed to have locked down W7 a bit better now.

I'm sure allowing RDP in W7 Home wouldn't have been a big deal for MS -- it's certainly IMO needed.

For Linux VNC is a good solution -- whether you could use this on Windows as a server I don't know.

Cheers
jimbo
