2nd HDD suddenly Showing Up As Unformatted

Q: 2nd HDD suddenly Showing Up As Unformatted

Hi folks. Just wondering if someone here has come across this kind of problem before. I run 2 HDD, both are Maxtor 60gb, the Master holds Win 2000, Win XP Pro, and Redhat 7.3. The 2nd HDD holds 3 partitions, I use these for storage of various data - Multimedia, Webdev, MP3, ect. Here's the prob - On reboot earlier today, the 2nd HDD suddenly showed up as unformatted. I've booted into a couple different DOS based diag apps, and get the same result, that the partitions are unformatted, including Partition Magic. The 3 partitions are intact, just unformatted. Which, of course, renders the data useless, as I can't get to it. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. - Thank You. -Ed Parrott

Preferred Solution: 2nd HDD suddenly Showing Up As Unformatted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was given an old PIII machine to work on that held all the (not backed-up) data for a business. The system was doing random reboots and occasional 'boot sectors not found'. I bought a WD 250 gig external and downloaded LaCie 1-click backup software because it was recommended in another forum.
I set the backup software to export a backup of C: to the external and walked away.

When I came back it was to find -
> the system had rebooted but now couldn't find the boot sector
> a handful of documents not in a backup format but rather just straight copied to the external.

Assuming it was just a problem booting up we bought a new system and I attached the old Maxtor as a slave. The new OS couldn't detect it.

I put it back in the old machine and used an XP disc to boot to dos which didn't show anything for C:\ dir c:
I then booted through to XP setup where it shows most of the 40 gigs as unpartioned space and wants to format it.

Is there any explanation for how a HD could suddenly become 'unformatted' and, more imporantly, is there any way to recover the data?

This will set the business back months so any help would be appreciated.

A:HD Suddenly Unformatted

Yes, hd can show as unformatted when they are failing.
Yes, you can generally recover data; it depends on how much money you want to spend. I use O&O disk recovery. It does a fine job, however it is not a free app. The next step [if recovery software does not work] would be to take the disk to a data recovery shop. They can disassemble the drive and recover the info. Note this will run quite a bit of money. It depends on how important the data is as to whether or not you go this route.

What I would do.

1 Make an image with acronis true image [if it can find the disk]
2 Run chkdsk from either the recovery console or a cmd prompt. See if chkdks can repair the file system on the disk.
3 Run data recovery software
4 If the above does not work and you really really need the data, then take it to a shop.

Basically, i want to transfer my music collection to my usb drive, but when i do so it transfers about 70% and then it says "could not find this item - this item is no longer located in...." it says that the item is not longer located on my usb... but i was trying to transfer it from my pc to my usb so it should be put on there. It says this for like 380 items which is the rest of the data i wanted to transfer.

I wondered why it said it was no longer located on my usb, then when i looked on my computer, it shows my usb (and other flash drives on my computer) as unformatted, it just says there FAT32 format and when i click on it, they show as empty, even though i know thers alot of things on there.

Basically to fix this i have to restart my pc and then its all fine again, my flash drives show up fine and they are formatted and the files on them can be accessed.

But not all the music is on my flash drive so i have to transfer the rest over again like i did before, this time it transfers some and then has the same problem and i have to restart. Eventually i can get all the music on my usb after restarting a few more times.

My question is... why is this happening? ive no idea why but my flash drives just show up as unformatted half way through. There must be a way to stop this or something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

I ran Kaspersky as my computer was way overdue for a full scan and it scanned a BullGuard file without any issues to report, but the thing is I've never used BullGuard, never downloaded it, never been anywhere near it. So I took a look in the folder it's nestled in - Windows > Applications > Tools > Security > BullGuard

There are nine files in the folder, one a video aptly titled Video, two PNG files, two .EXE files (one is called BgLicTool and the other BullGuard90_64), a file called licensekey.dat, a VBScript file called Bullguard, and two Windows Command Scripts named License and Install. Are any of these legitimate files? Can I delete them without problems? Kaspersky can't quarantine them and I haven't tried to move or delete them. I haven't run either of the EXE files or opened the video or images. I would just go ahead and delete them but I've had serious problems trying to remove fake programs before =/ The more I type the sillier this question seems but I thought I'd make sure.

Hi all, I recently got Windows 7 64 bit.
the day i got the machine home and running, i connected my USB harddisk and installed some stuff i had backed up from it.

But suddently i dont see the USB drives when i connect them, i have 2 and none of them is detected, or will they are detected and the "Safelly Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon comes up in my right lower corner as it should, and when i click it my devices is shown by their propper names and i can safely remove them aswell. but they are not shown under "my computer" and my anti virus dosnt scan them aswell.

Tho if i plug in my USB flash pin from my key ring it finds it, anti virus scans it and it shows up just as it should.

Can anyone help me solve this as im really confused by now.

Hey everyone,

Today my external hard drive is suddenly not showing up in my computer or on my one file manager program. It is really weird cause the computer reads it and it comes up in disk management and in my device and everything says it is working fine.

I check for updates and everything with no luck. Rebooted it and tried all the simple fixes like that. I dual boot this computer and the external drive pops up on OS X Lion fine and lets me access it and everything, so it doesn't have to do with the hard drive itself.

It has been working fine for months and I really don't think I changed anything in the last day or two with the computer for it to suddenly not be working. Very strange problem. Windows basically says its working fine except it just won't show up in My Computer. I tried connecting with both a Firewire cord as well as USB and neither work. I spent hours checking all over the internet and still no luck.

Any advice? Please help!!

Hello everyone. My first post here, and I really hope someone out there might be able to help. I'm pretty worried about losing all my files.

I have had a Western Digital externall hard drive permanently attached to my wife's old desktop PC (which runs XP) for a year or so. I've always been very pleased with it - it connected perfectly, and it has always just shown up in My Computer there as an extra drive. Perfect. However, that PC was getting old and the memory nearly full, so I copied all my important files (family photos, etc.) to my WD HDDm disconnected it from the old desktop, connected it to my much newer laptop (which runs Windows 7), and hey presto - it appeared in Computer. Again, perfect, no problem. However, I realised that I had not transferred all the files I needed from the old desktop to the HDD, so I had tp disconnect the HDD from the laptop and reconnect it to the desktop again with the intention of transferring the files I'd forgotten to transfer first time around. And this time, the HDD did not appear in My Computer. It DID appear in the little icon, bottom screen right, which you click to safely remove something, and it did show up in Devices, it just didn't show up in My COmputer, so I couldn't access it. The exact same thing happened when I tried to connect it back to my laptop - it's there in the "safely remove" icon and in Devices, but not in My Computer.

I am not very computer literate, but I've tried everything I can think of to fix thi... Read more

Maybe you can start there to find problem. Grzy

Hi all,
I am at my wits end.
I stupidly relied on my Western Digital external to back up all my photography, and today its not showing in My Computer.

When I go to 'manage drives' it shows but is unassigned and when I right click there is no option to assign a letter to the drive. I should point out it does show in device manager.

I tried unplugging it, putting it in a different USB port and also tried it on my lap top and its not showing.

After reading a couple of suggestions I tried a programme called Partition Find and Mount, I didnt know what I was doing but it found the drive and asked me to mount it. I changed the drive letter and after a while it showed the contents in Windows Explorer, which leads me to believe that my stuff is recoverable (I pray).

Can anyone tell me how to get my drive to be recognised again?

Since I built this computer in 2010 I've had a scheduled task which runs a VBS script to remind me to take my tablets each morning. Until the last few days, only one element was visible from this task, the message box spawned by the VBS script.

However, in the last few days, I also get a taskeng.exe window appearing at exactly the same time as the message box. The window is labelled taskeng.exe, has a VBS scripting host icon and the content of the window is pure black.

If I terminate taskeng.exe in Task Manager or click OK in the VBS message box, both the VBS script and that black window disappear.

I have no idea what might have caused taskeng.exe to only appear in this situation, because MSI AfterBurner also uses it to start the app during user login and it doesn't appear for that. Both processes are ones I've been using for ages longer than this problem.

Somehow cscript.exe had become the handler for VBS scripts on my machine. I definitely didn't do that.

Yesterday I was burning a CD of some of my music to take to work and listen to. After burning 4-5 songs there was an error (windows media player) and it could not burn the rest.

I hit OK and exited the program, then went to eject myCD, and it did not open. So I go to My Computer to select eject, adn there is no cd drive lsited all of a sudden, and not one in Divice manager either.
The LED light on the cd rom is still glowing green constantly, but it will not respond or try to open when I press eject. And it makes no sounds as if it is trying to read a disc or such.
I tried system restoring to 2 days ago, but it did not fix the problem. I've tried unhooking it, and hooking it back up to no avail. I have tried the Mr Fixit program from the microsoft site, and it DETECTS the problem, and syas 'CDrom/Drive not being recognized" or such, but has a red X next to it saying it could not resolve the problem.
I have also tried going intoo regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/

This is very frustrating since I am an avid computer gamer and can no longer insert my game discs to play/etc.

I'd be beyond thankful if someone could help me fix this soon, and please put it in turns/steps I can understand. Aside from gaming and internet, I am a tech novice.

Thank you so much in advance!

A:CD Rom suddenly not showing up in device management/computer etc in Vista &wont eject

Its likely a physical hardware problem. Open up the case, disconnect and reconnect both the power and data cables(on both ends) and see if the drive opens. If not the drive may have failed. The drive should even open with just the power cable connect and the data cable connected, so as a last test try ejecting the tray with only the power connected.

Hi all,

Tonite, I went to install a new PCI-E Firewire card into my desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate X64 and I had to install the most recent critical updates before shutting down.

Foolishly, I did not boot up after the updates, to verify my OS's integrity..I just installed the card and booted up. The card installed just fine, but now I have no network config. Odd, eh?

While troubleshooting, I changed slots and eventually removed the card. I also performed a system restore to a point prior to this evening. Still, I can not see my adapters from ipconfig. I can, however, see the adapters in the Control Panel, and I see they still have their configs.

I removed and reinstalled the adapters to no avail. I installed a wireless adapter, and even was able to see my router, and authenticate and establish a connection, but nothing in ipconfig.

It looks like my stack is hosed...any idea what I can do next? Can one reinstall "Networking" on a Windows 7 host? I hesitate booting off the emergency CD and doing anything drastic if there is a more simple solution I can consider.

Thanks all.

Then I partitioned it again As fair as I know when you blow a partition off and then recreate it, the data that existed prior is no more. You still may be able to recover data from the drive with third party software like Active UNERASER

I come here for the first time to ask the following question:
My secondary (non-system) hard disk is quite old. Lately one of it?s partitions (primary) is seen as ?unformatted?, both in explorer and in Partition Magic. I am able to salvage most of the data with TestDisk (but not the right filenames or filesystem, which is important), or can see the all of the filesystem with Active Partition Recovery, but can not recover it (error message is something like ?can not recovery because it overlaps??).
I am kinda scared of deleting this partition now, with only slight hope that I will be able to repair it with Active Partition Recovery later. What I want to do is to copy all the filesystem from that disk to some place on the primary disk, so I can get a new disk instead of the faulty one. Any ideas/tools that can help in it?

Try windows backup. Start>All Programs>Acessories>System Tools> Backup. Might help, but if the drive is going out, might be a little difficult to recover your files.

... the part that I don't quite understand is that when I attach the drive to my PS3, it is perfectly fine, all of my folders & documents are present and usable.

Does any body have any idea as to what could be causing this?

Here are some specs on my laptop/USB drive:

Drive - Western Digital 320GB, formatted to fat32 in a USB 2.0 enclosure
It was fine up until yesterday morning
Still works fine on my PS3 and X-Box 360
Laptop - emachines D620 with 1GB RAM, running XP professional
Other USB drives work fine

Hope somebody can help me!

Many Thanks

Hey guys,

It's my first time ever using a site like this but I'm incredibly desperate. Just took the outdoor trip of a lifetime and somehow my gopro sd card was not formatted or became corrupted. It works in the gopro but will not download to my computer. I attempted to use some free software as well as chkdsk but nothing has worked. Any ideas? I don't want to lose everything from the trip or have it collect dust on a damaged sd card for eternity! Please help! Thanks.

I've recently switched from a Win98 computer to my current XP computer. All my settings are the same. In particular, I've verified that my OE settings are the same. I use OE v. 6. I find now that even though my settings are to send messages in plain text, the messages as I type them are formatted. (As received, they are correctly unformatted.) Moreover, if I paste text from the Windows clipboard, the text appears with the formatting of the document from which I copied the text.

I'm not concerned that the message as received might be formatted -- I'm satisfied that it's correctly unformatted as received. However, the formatting (as it appears to me) prevents me from seeing the message as it will appear to the recipient. This issue did not exist until I switched to XP.

Is this a quirk of WinXP? I know how to erase the formatting for an individual message (by formatting and then unformatting the document). But this is a nuisance, and, furthermore, should I forget to do that the message will very likely appear to the recipient in a way I did not intend. I've run the System File Checker, to no avail.

Is there anything I can do to assure that when I create my unformatted message it will appear to me unformatted?

A:Formatting in unformatted OE messages

Hi, I use O.E. 6, WinXp, I.E.7 & don't have the problem you specify, assuming your "tools">"options">"send tab with "plain text button checked". When you're in the message compose, where's the little black dot on the "format" link? Other than that I'm sorry, I don't have a clue as to what the problem might be.

I have an intermittent problem on one or other of my hard disks, that appear on start up or reboot.

Manufacturers Diagnostics and S.M.A.R.T. tests all come back OK!

The disks are shown as unformatted in My Computer listing, asking if I want it to be reformatted ... etc.
Usually, I ignore it and on subsequent reboots it disappears. Perhaps, I may have done something to cause the change but what I do not know.

Has any one has this experience, and if so what have you done consciously to correct it?

Sure, I've had that happen.

In every case, the hard drive or the file system had problems.

Did you run the long/extended test for the appropriate disk diagnostic?

First time post - hope this is in the right place. I've noticed that on occasion, when I insert a floppy disc that I know is formatted (and has files on it), I get an error message stating that the disc is unformatted. It's happened to me using different discs over a long stretch of time. Any ideas if I've just got cheap discs or is it a different problem? I've got WinXP and it's been flawless otherwise.

Thanks in advance!

A:Unformatted disc error

It is either the discs or the drive . . buy a box on new ones and see if the problem goes away . . if not, replace the floppy . . both drives and discs are dirt cheap these days.

I'm not sure why it's happened, but for some reason, my system is suddenly telling me that my secondary HDD is unformatted - I have two HDDs installed on this system - a 80GB main disk and a 40GB secondary disk - I generally keep programs installed on the main disk (which is partitioned) and keep my work stuff on the secondary disk. I was just using it this afternoon without problem, but after restarting my system after coming back in the evening, the problem started. Essentially, I clicked on My Computer, and noticed it was taking a long time to open. When it finally did, it showed the three drives (the partitioned C: and D: and the secondary G: drive), except that no stats were shown (max size and used size) for G:. Double-clicking on the G: drive, the system took a while to process whatever it was doing, then it spat out a message saying that G: drive is not formatted and asking me if I wanted to format it. I've restarted it a couple of times, including in Safe Mode, with no results.

I'm not sure if it's anything I did. I've spent the past couple of days fixing a problem with the nview.dll driver for my nVidia card (successfully), as well as doing a comprehensive cleanup of the system with AdAware and Spybot (I used to run Spybot regularly prior to that, anyway, and I have regularly updated antivirus and internet security programs installed as well). I also removed a couple of non-essential items from the startup using msconfig recently.

WinXP, 2 drives (C: 20 GB, D: 30 GB), both formatted FAT32, no partitions of any kind

D: drive has spontaneously become unformatted after startup on two occassions (span of several months between incidents). I don't know why. The drive has a letter assigned, but XP asks me if I want to format it. Drive contents aren't recongnizable on another XP machine, so something is wrong with the drive. I have run the Maxtor drive utility to see if there is a problem, and the full scan has come up clean.

Is there a simple utility that might fix this problem without reformatting?

edit: TestDisk 5.2 sees the files on the drive, I just can't access them in XP. Is there anything I can do with TestDisk to help my cause? I'm not technically repairing a partition, so maybe this isn't the best utility for me. It does see my files fully intact, however. This is good.

A:My secondary harddrive became unformatted

Just ran a utility that scans and repairs bad sectors, but it found nothing wrong.

Obviously something weird is going on here. I also ran something called "PC Inspector File Recovery" and it couldn't touch the drive saying it has a bad boot sector.

I can't run chkdsk either. When I do, it immediately closes the window and quits. Norton Disk Doctor can't access the drive because it's "not formatted."

I know I haven't posted much in the forums but I've been lurking around techspot for ages and I know how great it is but now I need help!

Okay so I have this computer, 3 harddrives, NForce4 DFI-Lanparty motherboard, really good gpu, and an Opteron 148 processor. Just a bit of hardware info to get an idea. Aside from that, 2 of those harddrives, I believe of Hitachi brand, were set up in RAID. I didn't build this computer, but it was a built by someone and I got it for an amazing deal from that guy so I didn't get to build my own like I was planning and learn how everything works quite. Well ever since my problem occured I've researched like crazy and I know more but unfortunately I haven't found a solution to my problem.

The Cause:
I bought 2 gigs of OCZ ram to match my current gig, it installed fine at first but then in order to work I had to reset the CMOS, BIOS, and all other setup functions to make it reallocate the new RAM. Well stupidly, since I bought the computer ages ago, forgot about the RAID setup and forgot to reconfigure it and so, windows started, everything worked, then all of a sudden; my computer found two new drives! I looked, 2 unformatted drives and I knew what happened.

The Problem:
I tried to reconfigure RAID and repartition it but it wouldn't let me make it accessible because it was now "unformatted" or... Read more

A:RAID Unformatted Error - Please Help If Possible

there are several file recovery programs out there. Some are better than others. But a large hard drive with thousands of files can take a long time no matter what. Using linux/unix will not work with windows unless you have some sort of unix program that can access windows directories.

In te future always back up important files offline to a secondary storage device, especially when doing drastic changes. Adding ram should not require changes to BIOS. Read the updating ram guide in the guides forum.

When you tried to reconfigure the raid, you wiped out the boot and directory sectors. your data is still there, provided you didn't format or overwrite it.

i just messed myself up pretty bad.

i was tryign to add a new 60gb hd to my computer which has a 80gb hard drive, but it too me a while to get the master slave jumpers set properly cause i couldnt find the labels. anyways, when i finally got the computer to boot with 2 drives, the startup screen was a mess of colours. despereate to see windows again i got my disc and installed it onto my 60gb hard drive and got it to start up. however, it shows my 80 gb hard drive as RAW type right now and wants me to format it. did turning my computer on and off while trying to get this to work mess up my drive or soemthing?

anyways, is there any way to open up that drive which now is registered as a unformatted drive?a lot of my stuff is on that computer which isnt THAT important but i would still like to keep.

ask me for any clarification. i know this is messed up which also explains why i could turn a simple task bad.

I recently bought a Samsung hard drive from Newegg. I formatted it with NTFS and made 2 partitions. Everything was working great until I woke up this morning to find my computer was not turning on.

I went to run the recovery to find out that the hard drive was no longer partitioned or even formatted. Thankfully I had most of the data backed up and I haven't really installed much.

How does a hard drive go an unformat itself? Does that mean the hard drive may be no good? Is there anyway to recover the hard drive through the repair of Windows 7 or should I just start over and reformat/reinstall everything?

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM is the hard drive I purchased. Seems to have really good reviews.

Hello and thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

A couple of days ago I was downloading some video files and since I wasn't paying attention I clicked an .exe instead of a video file. I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

I have a system with a spanned volume of five 2TB disks. Actually, the "disks" are all iSCSI targets (since Windows XP won't see targets >2047GB on my QNAP array)... but in any case, Windows shows all the disks as being present and the spanned volume as being "Healthy"... it just doesn't appear to be formatted any longer. The array itself (RAID5 with a hot spare) shows as healthy, and the SMART on all the physical drives shows fine as well. So all the components look to be good, I've just lost the NTFS structure.

Any suggestions on how to recover??

Sorry its been so long since I posted, I had . . . personal issues and never got around to coming back (nor reseating my processor but will some time this week.) Anyhow, I just installed a SATA dvd lite scribe burner, which freed up a IDE slot. Well, naturally, I went ahead and put in my old hard drive, so I can get some files off of it. I ensured that the jumper was set to slave, so I wouldnt have it wrestling with the SATA hard drive for boot priority.

Then I booted up and found that the IDE cd burner wasnt in "my computer" and the old hard drive claimed it wasnt formatted. I shrugged, knowing a cable was loose and powered down. After double checking each and every cable that I unplugged to install the drives, and the others just to be safe, I powered it up. Now the cd burner showed up but the hard drive still wanted to be formatted. I went into BIOS and poked around but nothing is amiss, it recognizes everything correctly.

I'm not sure what I should do here. I'm pretty computer savvy but this has me puzzled. Of course I won't format the hard drive, I am almost positive that it still holds my, non mandatory, but still needed data. Should I disable my SATA drive and try booting from the IDE? The computer's configuration is totally different (Win key is the same) so it might not boot up. Or did it get damaged, despite my precautions of putting it in a static free bag and setting it in the drawer with my other old hard drives?

I can no longer boot into Windows XP and when trying to repair the windows installation I am told the C-drive is either too full, damaged, not formatted or formatted with an incompatible file system. As it was working before I can conclude it is either damaged or full. I have a separate D and E drive on a physically separate hard disc but even if I try a fresh install on these correctly formatted drives I get the same error message on the C drive which prevents me from going any further without re-formatting the drive and losing all existing data....don't I feel a fool for not taking an image of the drive now! Anyone got any ideas for me to try? Anth.

A:Win XP boot problem C-drive unformatted

If the drive is full, an install to another partition will fail. The os needs to copy some files to C or the first boot device. You could boot into the recovery console and delete some unneeded files from C; this will freeup some space. While you are in the RC do a fixboot and fixmbr for C.
If you have PM you can boot with the PM boot disks and resize your C [unless C is the only partition on the physical drive]

Hey guys, haven't been around these forums in awhile, hit a problem I can't solve and I'm hoping TechGuy.org can save me once again.

Okay, didn't know what kind of title would best suit this question, but...

I record audio from a sound booth using some kind of rack mount audio recorder. It basically takes in an output line straight from the sound board and records straight to a WAV file on a Lexar Pentium II 80x 4gb Compact Flash memory card. This memory card can be read using the iMac in the sound booth or my home desktop using Ubuntu 10 but when I insert the memory card into my all-in-one memory card reader while booted in Windows 7, I get an error message saying:

You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it.

The dilemma here is that I normally only use Linux to debug and write Java programs, I use Windows for all my audio/video editing. It's becoming kind of a pain to have to unload the memory card in Ubuntu and then reboot into Windows to manipulate the WAV file.

With all that very vague information, could anyone maybe get me pointed towards some software or patches that allow Windows to read that type of memory card? If it's impossible just say, hey, it's impossible and I'll shut up.

Thanks for all the help!!

I am using a Toshiba Satelliate P25 607 with Windows XP Media Edition, 2.8-GHz Pentium 4, 2 Gig RAM, CD/DVD drive, hard drive 75 Gig.

Three years ago, I used Partition Magic to create a Windows 98 SE partition. I did so successfully, but it did not fulfill my purpose. I simply ignored it.

Some months ago, I had some problems that chronically worsened. I backed up critical files and reinstalled from the disk that came with the computer. I reasoned I could just reinstall fresh and eliminate the Windows 98 partition.

I successfully reinstalled, but a Boot Magic command came up forcing me to choose to continue the boot. However, the computer worked O.K. However, after several weeks, it became unreliable so I reinstalled with the same results. About the fourth or fifth iteration, however, it ended up in such a condition that it would not reboot.

I used Fix-It Utilities 6 Professional to reformat the disk entirely, remove any evident vestige of Partition Magic/Boot Magic. However, no matter what variation of reformatting I try (single partition vs. mulitple, NTFS vs. Fat32, active vs. non-active partition), the results are always the same. My original reinstall disk seems to operate perfectly and reinstall everything except that I get the messa... Read more
