Q: ThinkPad W510 RAM Memory Upgrade / Installation

Hi all, My Lenovo G575 is a few years old, but still works. I have only 1 RAM memory slot soldered onto motherboard. Windows 10 is installed, but quite slow on the internet. Can i upgrade RAM memory from 4gb 1066 speed to one single 8gb card? will it use 8gb or just 4gb? Any options to make internet faster, as i do have BT Fibre and only a few metres from router? Thanks all.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

From the parts list of the Maintenance Manual - your computer will only accept 4gb modules. If you only have one socket on the motherboard, you are limited to a single 4gb stick. Usually the system has the option for two memory modules, so I would suggest contacting Lenovo support by phone to discuss this situation.

I think the limiting factor is your budget and not the machine.  I would expect it to work with anything up to 2TB.

I know that the L520 allows a maximum memory of 8 GB. Do I have to use each slot to get maximun memory (4 + 4) or can I install a single 8 GB stick into a single slot and leave the other empty? If I can use the 8 + 0 method, does it make any difference as to which slot I install the stick? Additionally, does it make any difference in speed if I use the PC3-10600 memory or PC-12800 memory? i7 - 2620M processor

A:ThinkPad L520 RAM Memory Upgrade / Installation

I'm of the opinion a L520 will support 16GB, at least my T520 and both X220 I have do so. And they're the same generation as yours

Generally speaking it's better to have two sticks for dual channel, 2x 4GB should be better than 1x 8GB. Although the difference may not be so noticeable in normal daily usage.

I want to upgrade the memory on my Lenovo W510. It currently has 8 GB total and I want to get it up to 16GB. Currently there is 4GB inside under the keyboard. I only found one slot there even though its supposed to have 2 there. The other 4GB is on the underside of the unit. You can see from the photo that the 4GB is installed on the left side. The right side is also supposed to house a memory card but there doesn't exist a holder for the memory card on that side. So basically I have two slots that are usable. Can I just switch the 4GB card with 8GB cards to get to my 16 GB?    No slot holder on the right

Have you checked to see what programs and servcies are still runnning?
Can you start in safe mode and see if the problem persists?
I suspect one of your services is in the background using up a lot of processing.

Since it doesen't even start with only the Battery attatched I don't think it's a Software Problem. Btw the Battery is recognized by the os it's full and status is charging. Any Ideas?

I have a W510 that I put into hibernate. I then pressed the power button to re-start it, but nothing happens. The 'most' that will ever happen is that the green battery light comes on on the outside. What I've tried:  1. Disconnected power and battery  2. 1 + diconnected Bios battery  3. 1 + press and hold the power button for 10+ seconds, with 30+ second breaks (repeating about 15 times)  4. swapped hard drives (didn't expect that to do anything)  5. swapped power cords  6. docked it, and tried  7. power without main battery under various of the above scenariosI have not done any changes to the machine before the problem for a number of weeks. Any thoughts? Thanks!

A:Thinkpad W510 dead

I am assuming when you pulled the BIOS (CMOS) battery, the power and main batteries were already disconnected.  After you pull the CMOS battery, press and hold the power button a couple of times.  Wait 30 seconds and put it back together..

My w510 has a TOSHIBA MK3261GSYN 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz, and 7904 mb ram most of it unused. I am using puppy linux for my operating system and I have tried lubuntu as well, both are very fast but when I browse youtube videos my computer slows down greatly. I want to upgrade the hardware to try to solve this. I found the Kingston 2.5" 120gb SATA III SSD and I want to install it to replace my hdd. Will this be enough to help my computer speed? I don't know what CPU I should upgrade it with or whats compatible with my computer but I will appreciate any reccomendations. I have never touched my computers hardware before, and the installation videos I've seen for upgrades of it on youtube just show removing the screws and parts, then installing the part, but I've also read that you need firmware and BIOS updates. Would I need to update my firmware before I install any of these parts? I will appreciate any advice.

The palmrest of my W510 has some cracks and the trackpad and it's mouse buttons seem defective, so I want to replace the palmrest, including the trackpad.Currently I have a palmrest with the fingerprint reader. Some questions: - the T510 and W510 use the same palmrests, is that right?- can I replace my palmrest with a model without fingerprint reader?- what palmrest of other Thinkpad models are also compatible? T4xx, T520, W520, what ever?- what do I have to take care of to get a compatible palmrest, is there some kind of compatibility matrix? For example, does it matter if the replacement has a color calibration scanner or not? (mine has not) Thank you very much for your help! Roland

hello, I hope this is the right place to ask some Q about the IBM thinkpad G40 .. My son bought a second hand G40 some years back. It had/has only 256M memory. Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? (DDR)Now a cpu-z run on that laptop says the memory is PC2300 (142Mhz) so what gives ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?TIAImbsysop

Welcome to the forum! Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked. If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM. Hope this helps.

Hello all, I have an issue with my Thinkpad W510. Immediatly after installing a fresh windows 10 onto the computer (in order to sell, the laptop already had windows 10/fedora dual booting and everything was fine.) the screen resolution became wacky. Upon booting the screen is repeated 4 times going vertically down the screen. Once booted into the OS there is a split about 2/3 down the screen and the top half of the screen is repeated on the bottom 1/3. Colors are also very dull. I updated windows 10 fully, installed the latest nvidia driver, and rebooted, no results. I then rolled back to windows 8 which is what i got the computer with, updated, updated drivers, and still have no option other than 1024x768 resolution. And the screen is still repeating itself. I have also taken the computer apart, dusted, made sure the video connectors were seated. Put back together and problem persists. However, when plugging in a display via VGA it displays fine. Is this an issue within identifying the display on the latop? Or more likely a coincidence that the fresh install of windows happened along side a hardware failure of the screen/video cable. I'm pretty stuck right now and was really needing to get this sold. Any help is appreciated thank you!

Howdy All! I just ordered a Thinkpad P70 with a XEON 1505-M processor. It comes with one 16gb ECC memory module. I want to add 3 more and when I checked Crucial.com's memory upgrade options, it only list 1x16GB NON-ECC memory modules! So two questions: 1) Can I mix the 1x16GB ECC memory module with 3 NON-ECC 1x16 modules? 2) How hard is it to install memory in the P70? My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)! Thanks in advance! Aggie85

Since non-ECC modules are only slightly cheaper I would not recommend it. About 2: for the P50 it is a piece of cake to install memory, it should be no different on the P70.  As for memory: Lenovo currently uses Samsung modules. So if you want to go for the same 16GB ECC modules check for M474A2K43BB1-CPB. I do not know about Cruicial, but at least Transcend also got 16GB ECC modules (check for TS2GSH72V1B). I cannot say anything about the Transcend modules, but I installed two of the 16GB Samsung modules (besides the 8GB module that was already in) in my P50 had no problem so far (even checked with Memtest86+ for a whole night). Cubbi

Currently I am trying to upgrade memory modules on my ThinkPad P51 of type 20HH. It was planned to have maximum, i.e. 64 GB, instead of original 8 GB. After some research four of Crucial 16 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM CT16G4SFD824A have been obtained. With absolutely no problems two of them have been inserted in slots under the bottom cover. On that stage the laptop starts up and works perfectly with total 40 GB of RAM consisted of new 32 GB and original 8 GB. However, after adding a new memory module under the keyboard and/or replacing original 8 GB memory module with new 16 GB, and/or even putting original 8 GB memory module in the neighbouring slot, the laptop doesn't start up. Several attempts have been done to solve this problem, i.e. BIOS has been updated to 1.47 version, CMOS battery has been removed and returned back to its place, SSD drive has been removed and returned back to its place, the laptop has been turned on with a battery only, with AC power adapter only and with both of them. Nothing of the listed above helped to solve a problem. Did someone face the same problem? Is there a solution for it?

I recently upgraded my Thinkpad W510 to Windows 10 April 2018 Update (v1803). I noticed a message in Windows Defender regarding a problem with the "security processor" which indicated that I should "reset it to fix functionality issues". In looking at TPM (Trusted Platform Module), I see a message indicating that "TPM is not ready for use" and I have the following available options: 1. TPM is not enabled or activated. Please check BIOS settings.2. Turn on TPM and take ownership.3. Restart the computer to take ownership of TPM.4. Click "Prepare the TPM" to provision it.5. You may clear the TPM to remove ownership and reset the TPM to factory defaults. The TPM on my system is from STMicroelectronics not from Infineon which apparently had some issues. Which choice do I make? Thanks,  JohnD

Unfortunately X200's are very picky with DDR3-12800 (DDR3-1600) like the ones you bought.

I would advice to buy DDR3-10600 (DDR3-1333) or DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) RAM. I would also recommend you to avoid the "Value RAM" line from Kingston, the "Value Select" line from Corsair (other lines from those brands are ok) and any no-name brand from eBay and similar shops.

Hello to everybody,Recently I have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and I want to increase the memory, (by default is 4 GB) to 8GB or 16 GB. if it is possible. My question is if this laptop support without any problems or errors 16GB RAM of memory, because officially it is only 8GB.RAM, but I have seen on internet, people with 16GB Ram in this laptop, Are there any problem with this? If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Or the only possibility is to replace the Hard Disc for a SSD Disc?Thank you very much,Regards.

I recently upgraded my T500 to a SSD and 8 gbtyes ram.  The diagnostics recognize the 8 gbyte upgrade but state only 4 gbytes are usuable.  I thought the machine maximum was 8.  Is there anything else I need to do to make the machine use the memory.

The ThinkPad T400 and T500 datasheet states that it can handle up to 8GB of RAM, so it should work unless you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, in which case the maximum RAM that can be addressed by the OS is 4GB regardless of how much RAM you install.       The Windows license key is valid for both 32 and 64-bit, but to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, you would have to uninstall and reinstall Windows. Windows Install Media Download Links,https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Hope that helps,

I recently purchased a Yoga 11e 20d9 model and so far I'm loving it.  However, I wanted to upgrade the memory from 4gb to 8gb.  I purchased Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) as all the reviews I read said this was okay to use, however, everytime I install the memory and I try to charge the laptop at the same time it crashes.  I can run windows 10 perfectly without issue up until I try to charge it.  I can charge ther laptop when the laptop is off but for the life of me I can't get it to coexist.  I installed the original ram and everything works perfectly.   Even if I'm in bios, as soon as I plug in the charger the laptop will crash.  It literally has rips on the screen and everything fades out.  As soon as I unplug it, the laptop works flawlessly.   I returned the memory and got a replacement and it does the same exact thing.  I updated both the BIOS and battery firmware.  I am out of ideas.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

Hi! I have a lenovo w510 which came with 4x2gb samsung modules. I updated my BIOS to latest version (1.45). Then I installed 4x4gb Corsair modules. BIOS identified the RAM corectly. The stats seem almost identical:  When running the Corsair RAM, laptop get's highly unstable. Boots into win10 but then reboots, freezes or just shuts down. Can you identify what is the problem or guide me on? Cheers
