Q: Solved: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operati

System Information:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad Cpu Q8200 @2.33 GHz 2.4 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 8.00GB:
System Type: 64-bit Operating System

I get the following error a large number of different times in the Administrative Event log. How do I track down what is causing the problem? The problem device is an external WD My Book 1 TB IEEE 1394 SBP2. I don't understand why there should be a paging operation on this device as it is used only as an external backup for the C: drive. It has been set up with no paging file.

NEW Info: I setup WD My Book drive to have a virtual paging file and guess what - The error messages stopped! Go figure!
If you need more information just point me in the right direction and I will post it.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Solved: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operati

The indicated solution of creating a virtual paging file for the WD MyBook drive did not correct the problem. The problem resides in the IEEE 1394 (firewire) driver. Do the following (quoted from http://social.answers.microsoft.com...e/thread/42085c5a-4f15-4dcd-8a76-9a7860b526c2) to correct the problem stated above:

"Update to my previous post. I updated my IEEE 1394 (Firewire) controller driver from "LSI 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller" (1934ohci.sys ver 6.1.7600.16385 stock driver from Windows 7 64-bit) to "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)" (ochi1394.sys and 1394 bus.sys ver 6.1.7600.16385 also stock from Windows 7 64-bit).
This change seems to have resolved this issues described in my previous post in this thread. My external Firewire disk works normally now (no longer slow during large transfers) and the Warning ID=51 has not recurred (after two days).

To accomplish this driver change, here are instructions:
Control Panel > in control panel search box (upper right) type "device manager", run Device Manager (requires Admin authorization)
View > view by type, then expand IEEE 1394 Bus Controllers (by clicking the arrow)
Double click your 1394 OHCI Host controller (exact name may vary) to bring up "properties", and write down current driver name on Driver tab in case you want to go back later.
Driver tab > "Update Driver" > "Browse my computer for driver software" > "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer" > select "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)" > Next
My guess is that the new 1934 ohci.sys driver has a bug triggered in some configurations. If any MVP wants to point me a the correct reporting form, I'd be glad to ask Microsoft to earn the money I spent on their new OS and fix the bug."

An error was detected on device\Device\harddisk1\D during a paging operation. This is logged frequently in my event viewer. Somtimes it is with "harddisk 2" . Is this my harddrive beginning to fail or is it an error with the external harddrive attached to my PC?

I added a new 500 gig external drive to a server several months ago to use as a secondary backup device. We use a DAT drive as our primary.

I backup 3 boxes to this external drive, starting at 8:00 p.m., and allow 2 hours for each backup. I haven't gone back in the event viewer to see exactly when this started, but I get this message now at the times those backup routines start.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR4 during a paging operation

There is only 1 internal drive in the server and it is HardDisk1. Number 2 is this Seagate FreeAgent USB drive.

Anyone have any ideas as to what that message really means? I can manually copy data to it and erase data from it.

I have noticed however; that some of my backups aren't executing at times on those 3 other boxes for what ever reason.

I'm wondering if this drive is going into a hibernation routine or something like that....

I have 3 brand new WD Black 640g in a raid0 stripe. blazing fast (300mb/s write) and everything is working flawlessly.. except I started playing Call of Duty and it keeping randomly when loading maps.

Event log shows this:

It's shown all drives/partitions. I also got some directX errors when it crashed..

It's only crashed and shown me errors visually when running cod4 and because it has given me Video and HD errors I think maybe my 500watt power supply is at fault, its probably crapping out under heavy load.

maybe it can't power my nvidia 260gtx and 3 hard drives? I am running am physical error scan but its probably going to be fine. who agrees with me on the power?

I have several problems actually, but let's start with this one. When I was trying to figure out why my wifi mouse and keyboard periodically quit working, I looked in Event Viewer and found many, many errors of the Event ID 11 category:  The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.  The first error date is 6/20/2016.  After that they become numerous. Now showing up every few hours.
Can anyone tell me what that means?

Hello to everyone, I Just want to confirm something,
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and not encountering any freezing nor BSOD, but everytime I check the EVENT VIEWER it annoys me to see the error message "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1" ... I check the disk manager and from what I see in there my primary harddisk is located in channel0/Disk 0 while Disk1 is from my removable USB flash drive.
Does that mean the one mentioned in the EVENT was just actually my flash drive? Why was it called a harddisk???

Please someone confirm this for me because I'm getting paranoid if my harddisk is already starting to fail.

Thanks for any helpful reply...

If you have a usb device like a printer connected. I would remove it for the time being.

The above fix is however not related to your problem. I would ask your question in the XP or Multimedia forum as the problem seams to be the quicktime player. Try removing and reinstall the player. Does it happen on any other media types..like avi, mpg...ect? If not..then it's a quicktime related issue with .mov, .qt files. Your log (with the exception mentioned above) is clean.

Could some knowledgable person please help me with an irritating problem? I am setting up a new PC using Windows XP Home. I have loaded a small games program onto the hard drive of the new PC from a very old (10 years old!) shareware CD, and when I try to run the program, a box appears on the screen with the label "ntvdm.exe - No Disk" in the top left corner. After the white cross on a red ground, it shows the message:

"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR2"

Underneath are the buttons "Cancel", "Try Again" and "Continue". Neither those buttons nor the "x" button on the top right of the message does anything until I click on one of them for 6 or 7 times, then the message disappears and I can play the game.

This can't be an internet related problem, because my new PC is not yet connected, so all that's on it has come from a legit copy of Windows XP Home or stuff I've transferred from my old PC, which is clean.

If anyone can unravel this for me, I will be most grateful.

Many thanks

Windows XP has no DOS, only a DOS emulator.
The ntvdm.exe application is the emulation program, it does suggest that the old DOS program is using some non-standard DOS calls at initialisation, hence the errors.

Put a shortcut to the game exe file on the desktop, right click it and select Windows 95 in the Compatability tab.

If that does not work, its about all you can do.

Many old DOS applications will not work without "real" DOS.

I have a datel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
1 gig ram
with WIN XP SP2

Here is what happened to me.

I connected a clients Hard drive through USB to my computer.
scanned the external drive with Norton Antivirus.
Restarted the computer and unpluged the external drive.
The client took the Hard Drive I had connected.

Now when I start windows, windows freezes or it is very slow.
On safe mode I can access available services smoothly.

now on safe mode I go to administrative services and system tools --> event viewer --> systems. I am able to see this error.
"The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D, has a bad block"

because of my particular scenario I have to assume Harddisk1 refers to the external HD I plugged in to scan and didnt wait to reboot or unplug it correctly.

Here is what I have tried:
turned off virtual memory
look on device manager
turned off USB devices

any ideas would be helpful

thanks community

Borrow the USB-connected drive back from the client, plug it in, let Windows recognize it, click the "Safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray, wait for the "It is now safe to remove...", then unplug the USB drive.

You might run chkdsk on it before you unplug it, just in case it does have a bad block.

I'll start with my two questions, then go to the backstory part:

1. How do I force Windows to run a chkdsk on a certain disk, not now, but at bootup?
2. What do a seeming explosion of Event ID 7 (bad block) errors mean, on a disk I believed to be robust?

Now the background.

In viewing my event log yesterday, I noticed, from a week previously, there were two errors "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block."

I guess that's worth another question - I have three hard disks; how do I know which one it's referencing?

My computer configuration has three physical HDs. C is the 250-gig boot drive and has all the software and OS files, and the page/swap file. D is the 500 gig "data" drive with the documents, program data, etc. There's no swap file on it. F, also 250 gig, is mirrored from D using the MirrorFolder software.

I ran chkdsk on C, and of course Windows would only do that on restart. The chkdsk took about 90 minutes on the 250 gig drive, and found no errors, no lost sectors, no bad anything.

This morning before going off to work, I figured I'd check D. To my shock and disappointment, the chkdsk just started running. That's why I asked question 1 above - I'd love to know a way to delay a chkdsk until during the boot sequence.

In a relatively short time, it had gone through the first three of five steps and had started on the file data portion.

There were two "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block.&qu... Read more

The obvious answer is to use the correct driver.

Right when I log onto a particular Win 7 x64 system that performs as a file server I get a System Error 11 logged:

The specific drive is a Western Digital 2 TB MyBook 1140 USB drive attached via USB3 connection, and apparently has something to do with being spun down.  It won't log the above error if it's already spun up.
The system drive is a RAID 5 array of SSDs managed by Intel RST.  No part of RST seems to even know about the backup drive, so I doubt this is an issue.
I'm not sure why Explorer or anything should be trying to access this particular drive when I log in, nor why it being spun down should cause an error even if something does access it.  It's a pretty lean system, without very much that runs upon
I have the latest Western Digital drivers, and the drive is otherwise perfectly healthy.  Every 3 hours a backup runs and it logs no errors at that time - just when I log into the system interactively, either by RDP or locally on the console.
I prefer to have my systems run error-free, and this is one of two classes of errors I'm trying to eliminate (the other being a recurring registry access error logged by Microsoft Security Essentials, which seems unrelated).

Any ideas?

Typically, you have Sata ports 0, 1, 2, 3, then IDE ports 4 and 5. If you have 6 SATA ports then the IDE ports would be 6 and 7. See if you can find the manual for your computer or better yet system board, it should have a layout of the hard drive ports.

This error has to be the most frustrating I have yet to come across. There are tons of writings on this but you never really get anywhere that is understandable to me and most of the folks that have had the same error. I know what device that is causing this because it only happens when I have either my Verbatim external drive or any one of 5 different USB sticks. I am running Windows 7 x64 with a Corsair 220 gb SSD. I have a second hard drive which is all data. I call it my D:\Drive. Everything in Event Viewer is great until one of the USB or Verbatim external drive is plugged in and then the errors start. I have run chk /dsk on all USB's and the external drive and no help. There are no BSODs or Hangs or boot problems, so you may ask why I'm concerned. Well I believe there has to be some sort of explanation for this error and I really would love to get to the bottom of it before it is an issue. It's strange that all the articles from Microsoft that concern this really say nothing. Nothing simple anyway. If anyone is familiar with this error and what it really means please let me know. I actually took this to a repair tech and he said if it's not giving me problems don't bother with it. Glad I didn't have to pay for that.

A:The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR3.

Hard disk 2 would be your third hard disk, or potentially the USB disk. There might be a problem with the USB driver, or hardware (controller).

Have you tried plugging in the USB drives into other USB ports on the machine? Do you have another computer that you could plug these devices into? That would rule out damaged USB devices that may have been damaged by a faulty port on your PC.

Recently I reformatted my HD and clean install win 7 ultimate 32 bit on my computer, bcuz of some problems when booting up, took like forever to boot or 2 to 3 restarts..At first BIOS cant detect my HD so I taught its a hardware issue I did like changing the sata cable also took it to a technician TWICE! maybe the sata port was broken they check all the connection, the last one did fix it but im still having difficulty booting up..He said one last option reformat, so i did reformat it successfully from win xp, now it boots up just fine its running good no problem for like a week yeah just 1 week!. Now my pc has new problem or is it?? Whenever I used it 2 to 3 hours my pc hangs so much even just opening event viewer would take me 5 to 10 mins and 2 errors always flood event viewer the first time i saw it disk error reach 5231 and nvistor32 reach 5366 errors, right now as I am writing this, Disk error reach a waaping 23,145 total. I think this is a serious problem that needs some fixing....

1..Is my HD failing??My pc is fairly new about 1.5 years old. I dont think its the hard drive, if so then why those two errors are always together i know nvistor32 is from Nvidia for the SATA right?...

2..Am I just having sooo much badluck that that the 1st problem i had before reformatting it has nothing to do with this (completely new) problems??

please any help is greatly appreciated..Its driving me crazy and almost goes to the point of throwing it outside yikes!!

The first thing to do is go to the Samsung website and download the hard drive diagnostic tool for your hard drive and run it.

Post back what you get for results.

For the past week this error message has appeared on my screen upon boot:

USB Over Current Status Detected, Computer will shut down in 15 seconds

I've been determined to solve it but it just won't go away. I cannot get my computer started at all, or even access BIOS settings. My computer specification can be found in the link in the top right, the motherboard in question is the ASUS P5K-E.

After reading forum discussions involving the same problem, I've tried nearly everything.

Disconnecting front USB panel,
Removing all USB devices before switching on
Resetting CMOS
Powering up the computer with minimum components connected
Checked for short circuit problems (spare screws/motherboard touching case...)

The remaining suggestions are;

starting it up outside of the case
loosening the screws that connect the motherboard to the case

I'm going to attempt them solutions tomorrow. I would like to know if there are any other solutions to this problem though, as I am quickly running out of ideas. Perhaps the error is not caused by a short circuit and could be something else?

Lastly, I must mention that the computer has operated without the problem for 12 months. HOWEVER; one USB port (onboard) has been unstable for around two months since I tried connecting my keyboard (instrument) to my computer. I seen a message pop up in the bottom right hand corner indicating "power surge on USB port" (or something close). When I seen th... Read more

Problem is this Event ID 11 error whenever I plug in a USB flash drive or external USB hard drive
There are no red x or yellow exclamation marks in Universal Serial Bus Controllers section of the Device Manager.
All devices are USB 2.0 and the motherboard, ASUS M2N-MX has USB 2.0.
The devices seem to work (but sometimes slowly), but the error pops up everything a device is inserted in any of the 4 USB ports
Under the USB section
one USB Root Hub has 8 high speed ports
the other has 5 full speed ports

But the computer only has the 4 USB 2.0 connections

Problems I'm encountering:
1. Arial font disappears every boot-up. Everything that uses an Arial font will be italicized.
2. HDD diagnostic utilities won't work
3. Sometimes, the HDD LED will light continuously, but no signs and sounds of reading from the HDD. After lighting continuously, everything on the monitor will be gone and there will be a BSOD. The computer will restart by itself but will fail to detect IDE drives

System specs (attached)

A:The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.

Well it states a controller error in your first (or only) HardDrive

This can be:
Your HardDrive (sometimes you may notice that it's noisy, or clunking)
Your IDE data cable (can be just a faulty data cable to the HardDrive)
Faulty IDE0 port on Motherboard (you could try plugging it into IDE1 - where the CD/DVD is)
Faulty Motherboard (Oh dear, no comment)
Sometimes it can even be the CD/DVD drive causing the issue (try unplugging it from the M/b)

That's about all

Recently i had some kerfuffle with this Kernel_stack_inpage_error. I sent my PC back to the manufacturer's who incompetently installed a new CPU Fan. I receieved the machine a month later and experienced the same STOP 0x077 errors as before. Under teh advice of my friend ( a knowledgable type) i bought and installed a new SATA HDD (Maxtor 250gb)

Ive recently started getting the errors again, but this time i can actually see an entry in the event viewer, the titular "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D"

An avid gamer, the last time this happened was when i had exited World of Warcraft, and started to load up Steam and TF2. As the program began to load, something mustve gone kablooey, because it bluescreened.

Now im not technologically minded, but i would assume that "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D" means i have a problem with either

a) The <1mth old Hdd,
b) The cabling from Mobo to HDD
c) Something else.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Lord knows MESH doesnt know whats going on.

Hopefuly someone can help me here..

I've been getting these errors in the event log for a while now.. also have a few bsods. I've reinstalled windows a few times and at present it seems stable, however I still get these messages.

I don't think its a particular harddrive as it'l be different numbers, harddisk3/DR3, harddisk7/DR7 for example. Plus two drives are brand new and i've replaced the sata cables just in case.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I dont have my CD Disk drive plugged in due to a lack of wires from my PSU but im not sure thats the problem.
I was made aware of this problem by a Razer diagnostic I ran, link here: (http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg334/jakeebo/rzrdiag.png)

Could it be due to the Kernel error being 32bit and my OS being 64?: (http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg334/jakeebo/osos.png)

I am getting four megasas2 as Source with Event ID 11 errors in succession in Event Viewer on a computer running Windows 8.1 every time the computer goes to Sleep or Hibernates. On the General tab, it says: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort0." I have a LSI RAID Controller using the next to the latest firmware and drivers. I updated drivers and firmware to the latest version for Windows 8.1 and my computer became almost totally unusable! I have an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Rev 2.0 motherboard with the latest AMD chipset drivers but they are for Windows 8.

I have attached a zip file showing the Events, for your reference. I have contacted both LSI and ASUS about this issue.

Does anyone know why am I getting these errors?

Hi All

(Question : How do I verify what hard drive is installed on device5? I am going to try another sata cable once identified. In BIOS Sata 2 is the SSD and Sata 5 is the WD 150gb Raptor. Micron controller in BIOS relates to drives 6/7 & 8/9. Switched these of only impacted my DVD drive and the WD1TB data drive).

I have performed a resintall, restored from an windows image backup back in August which was performed after a fresh install.

Symptoms : Random bsod and some intermittent hanging for 1 to 2 mins. Suspected a new SSD drive which is what led to the reinstall. Ref previous thread :

Most current occurred when perfomering new backup in Windows7 data backup appears crashed during data transfer.

Pre Resintall actions :

Updated firmware to SSD and Bios to latest available from manufacturers websites.
Updated chipset drivers.
Updated all drivers available : Soundcard/GFX/Windows updates.
Ran Setools and all drives report back positive/ok.
Ran Eset Nod32 scan (smart scan) of whole system, all drives. Nothing found.
Ran AntiMalwareBytes nothing found.

Have attached the relevant analysis files and currently checking the following thread :

I know this is something to do with the SSD drive.

I am reluctant at the moment to perform chdsk /r as I believe this will lead to problems as one initiated and running, any problems I can not escape the loop. Reason it crashes an... Read more

A:BSOD :The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort5.

Looking through the Event log, I see that this is a restore from the broken image
I would really suggest that you do a fresh clean install - otherwise things are going to get *really* complicated
(Like, you're already in the WGA grace period, because the hardware has been detected as changed)
Just don't activate the new install until you're happy with it.

How do we solve this problem?

Hi all,
For the last several weeks now on startup on my laptop running Vista I keep getting a pop up stating new hardware has been detected and do I want to install the driver for it. I select yes windows looks for a driver but cannot find one. I have looke in device manager for anything that is amiss. And under other devices there is the yellow mark stating that there is a problem. The only thing I can find out is that it is a plug & play item, no specific name or anything to tell me what it maybe. When I select Properties for the said device the details I am given are \Device\00000025 and that it is not configured correctly. Is there anyway I could find out what this is ? Or should I uninstall it and reboot, and hope that the problem gets fixed on startup.
Thanks. Wizzkid

My daughter (a different daughter than the one whose computer issues are in a thread on the HJT forum) has a Compaq Presario F730US running Windows Vista home edition. When trying to access the internet via our wireless network today she slide the button on the front of her computer that you slide to connect to the internet. The light stayed amber instead of turning green. She clicked on HP wireless assistant and the program did not run. WLAN does not show up in her device manager.

At her apartment she has been using an external wireless modem to access networks in her neighborhood. Her internal wireless was interfering with the external connection so she shut the internal one off via the switch on the front of her computer. This has always worked ok for her in the past. Could that have affected the internal wireless?

She did the disable/enable of the network connection. This did not help. Her boyfriend looked at things and discovered that the WLAN was missing in the device manager.

She then restarted her computer and installed all Windows updates and restarted computer again. At this point she realized that she no longer had audio. When she holds the cursor over the speaker icon on the task bar it says "No audio ouput device is installed".

At this point she got on the phone with HP tech support. Their only solution was for her to pay $300 and ship it to them to see if they could figure out the problem. There are several models of Presario that have this very p... Read more

They include: "Audio device on high def. audio bus"

I downloaded the audio and chipset off of this link http://www.driverthai.com/mainboard/asus-m2n-mx-se-mainboard-driver.html , but still nothing. I've even tried uninstalling the "other devices" and restarting my computer to see if windows would correctly install them, but it didn't.
