I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Odd problem cropped up about a week ago. My boyfriend pointed out that the recycle bin has been renamed to "games (1)". I can't just rename it back either so I've no idea how to fix this. I did try going to the customize desktop feature from display>properties and selecting the restore default option but nothing happens so I'm not sure what else to try.

Hello everyone,

Whenever any icon on the desktop is (single) clicked, the recycle bin gets highlighted. If you double click, the recycle bin gets opened.

The shutdown menu only allows you to log off, all the other options are not selectable.

This computer is using Windows XP.

I'm sorry I can't really give any more details - it's someone over on the other side of the country who is having this problem and they aren't very computer literate....

You have permissions issues going on. Probably from an infection of some sort. The easiest way to fix it is to create another account and use that one. You'll still be able to get to anything in the my documents folder of your other account, but I wouldn't delete it until you've gotten everything off there you need for sure.

That registry tweak is for the default icon. You will need to restore the default icon and have ObjectDock relinquish control of the icon for the change to take effect.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

I hope you made a restore point or an image of your drive before you used the iconpacker they can be difficult to restore to the original if you ever want to.

You may need to do Icon Cache - Rebuild for it to show up

Hello I am new here and need a little help

I have Vista Ultimate x64 and when I click start then click on my user name all personal files come up however "Desktop" has a standard icon instead of the Vista default icon

I right click on it hit properties but there is no customize tab so I tried to edit the desktop.ini file it is currently:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

Nothing still the standard folder icon so I think for some reason it is flagged as a system file when it should be flagged as non-system file

I also tried right clicking the desktop -> personalize hit change desktop icon highlight my user name click restore defaults hit apply then then ok and nothing

I did reboot my PC after making all of the above changes

If I could get it back to the default icon that would be great thanks

EDIT: forgot to mention the customize tab is there if I click on other folders clike C:\Fraps for example

I have researched until I am blue in the face and not found out how to do this.

We are getting ready to have house guests, and I have created an account for them to use. I would like to create a desktop shortcut icon which is roughly double the size of the other icons to draw attention to it. The target file will be a basic readme with a couple of short rules for using my computer.

If I cannot find a way to create the single larger icon, I will resort to another idea I have in mind. That idea is to type the rules in Word and use Snipping Tool to capture the text and use the resulting image as a desktop background.

I had a problem deleting an older version of Firefox. The Firefox Setup .exe file was stuck in the Recycle Bin, it wouldn't delete and it wouldn't restore. Believing that the Recycle Bin was corrupt, I used this method from the DOS prompt:

rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin

I refreshed my Desktop and when I clicked on the Recycle Bin. While the file appeared to be missing, the Recycle Bin would not load properly so I restarted my computer.

Now when I click on the Recycle Bin icon, it points to my entire computer (exactly the same as clicking on "Computer" off the Start Menu) instead of the Recycle Bin folder.

How can I restore the Recycle Bin icon so that it shows only the contents of the Recycle Bin?

My gratitude to any and all who can help me.

My initial thoughts would be to change how the icons are aligned on the desktop.

Right Click on an empty spot on the desktop then select 'Arrange Icons by' and remove the tick (if it is on) from Auto Arrange (and Align to Grid if you want to).

After that you should be able to put the Icon anywhere you like and it should, hopefully, stay in the same spot after reboots etc.

By default Windows 7 has desktop icon view set to Medium. I want to change the default user NTuser.dat hive as part of SCCM build so that each new user has small size by default, but can change if they wish (hence can't do it as a GPO)
Does anyone know the registry key(s) to change?

Ian Burnell, London (UK)

A:Registry key to change desktop icon size

Hi,
This view size is controlled by HKU specific user registry. Thus it can't be mapping to another user account.
If you insist, there is a complex workaround(However I wouldn't like to recommend you use this method):
Copy the following registry value to place another user's registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
Note: It can't be imported, just copy its value.

I am running Windows XP SP3. I have many icons on my desktop with the description underneath in the font & size I chose. I was on the Delphi Glass website and clicked on a You Tube Video. I tried to copy the URL to my desktop. I got the message " Do I want to change my desktop". Wihtout thinking, I clicked yes. Instead of pasting the URL, all the descriptions of my icons were now boxed off with a background color that I determined was what was set in the Display Properties under Appearance, Advanced. I right clicked on the desktop, went to properties, looked at all options, changed many things but could not get rid of the border around the icon descriptions. I tried restoring a back-up of my desktop but that didn't work. I went back to the Delphi Glass site You Tube video and this time when I copied and pasted the url, I had no problems. I have up-to-date Norton 2012 running. Can you tell me how I can get rid of this formatting of my destop display?

I think what you're asking is how to use a batch script to change the icons on your desktop? I'm not too familiar with using batch scripts for that reason, though it may be possible.You may want to look into VB Script, a more powerful scripting language than batch.Something like this, I think:Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strDesktopFld = objShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop")
Set objURLShortcut = objShell.CreateShortcut(strDesktopFld & "\blah.exe")
objURLShortcut.TargetPath = "http://www.blah.com"
objURLShortcut.IconLocation "C:\MyIcons\icon.ico
objURLShortcut.SaveBut don't quote me on that.

The tried and true method that worked for Vista and 7 does not seem to work with my Windows 10?using regedit then changing HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics values for IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing which must be between -480 and -2750.

I have changed the values from one end of the scale to the other with no observable difference. I have logged out and back in again and did a refresh. Also did a restart and that made no difference either.

I do know how to make them smaller using the Ctrl + Mouse Wheel but that is not what I want.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have searched online and here but cannot find a solution other than the registry edit that I have tried.
