Preferred Solution: Intel chip flaw--but what of it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have just bought on Ebay a Lenovo Thinkpad X201, and run the Intel tool to check if it was vulnerable to the recent discovered security flaw on Intel ME (Critical Firmware Update - Intel-SA-00086) as described on the link bellow: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000025619/software.html The result was that my X201 is vulnerable! So, this is a huge security problem and I need a way to resolve it. I have already run all Windows 10 updates + Lenovo Companion app and it says no more updates are available. I have also search on Lenovo drivers and even on Lenovo dedicated page to this security issue on the link bellow but my model (X201) is not listed: https://support.lenovo.com/pt/en/product_security/len-17297 My question is if anyone knows a solution for this security issue on X201? Any help or advice is really appreciated. Note: On Intel check tool, it says my Intel ME driver current version is Thanks!

A:X201 - How to fix Intel ME Security Flaw

I think the reason its not on the Lenovo list is your processor is not affected.  Based on the intel link you provided it affects 6th, 7th and 8th generation intel chips.  I do not believe the X201 has those chips.

I just read this article on Ars Technica that I find very concerning: The hijacking flaw that lurked in Intel chips is worse than anyone thought | Ars Technica "A remote hijacking flaw that lurked in Intel chips for seven years was more severe than many people imagined, because it allowed hackers to remotely gain administrative control over huge fleets of computers without entering a password. This is according to technical analyses published Friday." Article: https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/05/the-hijacking-flaw-that-lurked-in-intel-chips-is-worse-than... And from what I can tell on the Lenovo Advisory below, Lenovo is listing the P70 as "affected." Does anyone know more about this and if only certain P70 configurations are affected or if they are all affected. I'm building a computer, and i'm having a bit of trouble deciding the processor to buy.

I was originally looking at the quad cores, when i saw the tri-core 2.8GHz AMD chip for $130 (canadian). The model is the AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 7.5M AM3 Bk. I was very satisfied with this buy, until my friend started to tell me that it is important that i buy an intel chip because it is better. No, he did not really give a good reason why lol.

So a near-equivalent Intel chip would be the Intel i5 750 Quad-Core 2.66GHz 8M. This would be about $240.

Can I get some advice? Is there any reason to spend the extra hundred bucks for intel? Give me your thoughts.

A:AMD chip or INTEL ?

Just a personal opinion, but I have always run AMD because
they always have a better price for the performance.
Never had problems with any of them.
I think I am going to go with an X2 6000+ next month and a
new motherboard.
More than enough for my needs and the price is right.

Intel has major security flaws in the Management Engine. You need to read the Intel emergency memo from a few hours ago.
In the memo, Intel links a tool to check if your system is vunerable.
Right now neither Dell nor Intel has posted updated software to remedy this critical issue for the XPS 9560 or 9550.

A:URGENT - Intel Management Engine - critical security flaw

Lol, ok then.  Well if this is how you feel about security vulnerabilities that Intel has acknowledged and is committing to fix, then I can't wait to see your reaction to the other news that broke about Intel Management Engine last week, which they might NOT fix because "it's not a security vulnerability, it's a feature": thenextweb.com/.../

The new heat sinks with the plastic board pins. - While I can't argue with the Intel processor specs, its seems they could have done worlds better with their mode of board attachment.

Expected more from a $300+ processor. The four hold downs remind me of drywall pins, that pinch back through on the opposite side of the board. Stressing the board itself (look closer and it pulls a slight bow as a result.)

I can tell by common sense that these were not designed to pull off-and-on too many times repeatedly (even following their sequence and instructions) as they rely on expansion/contraction of the plastic encasements themselves that seem subject to weakening and I have done so to clean the processor plate with alcohol and add hs paste.

Would have been happier with spring loaded screws or similar. What was ever wrong with screwed fans on the older processors in the first place? Nothing so marginal, they cinch definite and don't not release back through. If adjustable tension was needed they could have easily added screw springs.

Since the processor relies on cooling and if the heat sink pulls way, separating, I wouldn't be stunned if Intel ends up in some form of settlement. They went cheap on this one. Definitely in the wrong area. Of course they mention something about professional installation among the warranty but I don't seem where professionalism enters the picture here.

A:Intel heat sink pins basic design flaw?

If I recall correctly the Intel socket 775 coolers using the composite "push pins" were introduced in 2004, and have proved to be very reliable if locked down properly. There are aftermarket coolers available that use screws instead of the pins that attach to backplates that go behind the motherboard.

The advantage to the through board "push pin" lock down system is the fact that a backing plate is not required, and also if field replacement is necessary, you do not have to pull the board to replace the cooler. In field replacement of the cooler with "push pins" can be accomplished in about 20 minutes total time.

In the event a pin should become damaged from installation or re-installation, replacement pins are readily available, and are very inexpensive. The pins are a composite material and are very "tough". If you have a spare pin, take a pair of side cutter pliers and try to cut one.

I have built numerous socket 775 systems using the standard Intel cooler, and other than installing the cooler on my very first build with a socket 775 cooler, I have had absolutely no problems.

I was just curious because of my own problem lately and noticing I am by far not alone on the issue it seems to affect multiple motherboards from multiple manufacturers.

Anyhow the default multiplier for this chip is supposed to be 9, but it seems a lot of motherboards and systems are defaulting it to 6 effectively making it a 2ghz chip. (it even gets reported incorrectly in some cases until you run cpu-z or check your system specs later down the road)

I was curious if anyone else around here has experienced it?

Was recently looking at Intel's CPU reference at http://www.intel.com/pressroom/kits/quickreffam.htm. Some processor BUS speeds are in MHz, which I understand; but some (why??) are in "MT/s", which is "megatransfers per second".

(a) What's the difference between "MHz" and "MT/s" and (b) why aren't all CPU bus speeds rated using the same measure?

And why did Intel stop providing explicit chip frequencies like they did for several decades so you could instantly compare CPUs? E.g., a Pentium 4 3.2MHz was faster than an Pentium 4 2.6MHz. When you look at buying a computer today, what you typically see is only "E8400". . . and have no idea if that's faster or slower than a "Core i7".

Other OSes will need an update, performance hits loom

A fundamental design flaw in Intel's processor chips has forced a significant redesign of the Linux and Windows kernels to defang the chip-level security bug.
Programmers are scrambling to overhaul the open-source Linux kernel's virtual memory system. Meanwhile, Microsoft is expected to publicly introduce the necessary changes to its Windows operating system in an upcoming Patch Tuesday: these changes were seeded to beta testers running fast-ring Windows Insider builds in November and December.
Crucially, these updates to both Linux and Windows will incur a performance hit on Intel products. The effects are still being benchmarked, however we're looking at a ballpark figure of five to 30 per cent slow down, depending on the task and the processor model. More recent Intel chips have features – such as PCID – to reduce the performance hit.
Similar operating systems, such as Apple's 64-bit macOS, will also need to be updated – the flaw is in the Intel x86 hardware, and it appears a microcode update can't address it. It has to be fixed in software at the OS level, or buy a new processor without the design blunder.
Details of the vulnerability within Intel's silicon are under wraps: an embargo on the specifics is due to lift early this month, perhaps in time for Microsoft's Patch Tuesday next week. Indeed, patches for the Linux kernel are available for all to see but c... Read more

Hi! I have Windows Vista Ultimate running on a MacBook (2.2 GHZ 4GB RAM) with BootCamp and the problem is when I use the battery Vista runs so slow.

Using CPU-Z I realised that the CPU (Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T7500) is thorttling from 2.2 GHZ (2194.7 multiplier x11) to 1.1 GHZ (1197.1 multiplier x6) and use to stay all time on 1.1 GHZ

This throttling issue remains when the laptop is plugged, but is this related with the slow performance when working on battery?
I have to say when I booted Vista on Safe Mode working on battery it performed without problems so it should be Vista or some software causing this.
I checked the programs starting up with Vista and I suspect the Boot Camp software and Apple Drivers can be doing this.

Hope you can help me with this because I'm on the move all time.

Intel unveils energy-efficient 48-core chip

Research chip said to be 10x to 20x more powerful than chips in multicore Core family

By Sharon Gaudin
December 2, 2009 03:46 PM ET

Computerworld - Intel Corp. is honing its sights on many-core chips that are far more powerful than today's dual and quad-core processors.

As expected, Intel took a big step in that direction today by unveiling a 48-core research chip that it says is 10 to 20 times more powerful than current the top end offering in its multi-core Core line of processors. Intel also noted that the experimental chip uses the same amount of energy as two household light bulbs.

With its eye on the data center and the cloud, Intel built fully functional cores in the new chip as part of what it calls its "terascale" mission.

"With a chip like this, you could imagine a cloud data center of the future which will be an order of magnitude more energy efficient than what exists today, saving significant resources on space and power costs," said Justin Rattner, Intel CTO and head of Intel Labs. "Over time, I expect these advanced concepts to find their way into mainstream devices, just as advanced automotive technology such as electronic engine control, air bags and anti-lock braking eventually found their way into all cars."

Today's unveiling of the 48-core research chip comes about two years after Intel showed off an experimental 80-core chip. That research chip had teraf... Read more

Looking in the system event log I can see entries from source Netwtw04, Event ID 7012 stating "radio OFF"
Drivers and bios are all up to date.

Any ideas?

My wife has a twin graphics laptop. With Intel on the mother board and a Nvdia second one. A desktop monitor is used via a Docking Station ACP70EU After the W10 update only the Intell chip is working through the Docker when the laptop screen is off but the desk top one is being used. As far as I know both used to work as some of the graphics programs are setup to use it, They are running but using the Intel one, I expect they are also not using the graphics memory either!
If other display setups having the laptop screen running all?s OK and the Nvidia card is running.
Is there anything we can do are we stuck with it disabled with just the desk top screen working?
