DVD drive in XP, not burning or showing movies

Q: DVD drive in XP, not burning or showing movies

Hello,
Thanks for any help.

I just installed a new DVD burner on my machine (because the old one stopped working).

I didn't have a SATA port, so I bought a PCI RAID Controller and stuck the thing in that way.

Now it will burn CDs and generally view and open data DVDs.

However, it refuses to burn DVD RWs (DVD RWs with data already on them, no empty DVDs at the house).

Also, despite the availability of three DVD decoders (one is Windows Media 10 friendly, the other two are flavors of Roxio) Windows Media Player 11 won't show DVDs.

Media Player Classic just crashes with DVDs.

I reinstalled Roxio , I reinstalled K-Lite Codec Pack , I reinstalled iTunes .

I have no idea what the problem is. I thought it might be hardware, thus the replacement drive, but it seems like the software is bugging out somewhere. This all started a couple years ago when I decided to write over Windows XP Home for HP with a nice copy of Windows XP Professional. If you can't help me, I hope that installing Windows 7 in October will make the pain go away.

I grew up with Macs so speak slowly.

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: DVD drive in XP, not burning or showing movies

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: DVD drive in XP, not burning or showing movies

I should point out...it will show the title of a DVD on the drive.

Also, it likes to switch the drive name between "CD Drive", "DVD RAM", "Roxio...".

I went here for help on this matter, I followed what I think is exactly how to do what I needed.
But when ever I convert home movies or burn them to dvd I get BSOD saying it's doing a minidump. Then restarts. Just started happening last week. So I deleted my burning Software thinking that may have been the issue/s. But dont know. I know some about pc's but don't know anything on how to fix BSOD.

I have some movies I borrowed from a few of my friends several years ago; I was wondering if there is a way I can burn them to dvd? I have them in AVI. I wanna be able to play them on my dvd player; I'd like to get all 4 of them on one or two DVD's with a menu to pick between which one I want. Is this possible?

Also, can you burn movies to CD+R?

Thanks.

Hi all, hope this is posted in the right forum.I burn a lot of movie files to DVD using Ultra DVD Creator.Program works fine always but is a little slow.I have no startup programs when I boot so am not worried about that.I was wondering if I could burn the movies in safe mode with limited resourses running.Would this speed up the process a bit.I go into the Task Manager and disable what I can.It is not a big deal but was wondering if safe mode would speed it up any,Thank-you.

A:Burning Movies

Hi, It appears that you are using a program that converts and burns.

When You pull up task manager without the program running, what does it show the CPU usage as? It should be low, in the 0% to 1% range if nothing is running. If it is significantly higher then finding the problem will help.

If that is the case, then Your CPU is the limiting factor in the conversion process. Converting Video is very CPU intensive.

Ok so i usually burn DivX movies but my parents dont have a divx player. the problem is every time i burn in a dvd format that will play on any player i use nero, but it takes about an hour sometimes more to do.

so my question is, is there any way of burning it faster?

A:Burning DVD Movies

Not really. It's probably not the actual burning that takes all the time, but the encoding to the correct format for burning. The only way to speed that---a faster machine.

Hi. I just got a dvd burner and I wanted to test it out burning some videos and movies to dvd. I'm using the software that came with it (Sonic MyDVD) and I can set up the menus and add the video files, but the only problem is once I add a video file of about 400mb to it, it says the 4.7gb disc is full and wont burn. how come I can't add 4.7 gb of info to the DVD disc when I could burn it to a simple CD disc?

Do I need a different program? If so, what are some good ones?

Or maybe do I need to convert file types? Most of the files are .avi and .mpeg
Thanks in advance

I just have question. I am hoping that someone else has had the same problem! Being new to the dvd burning thing I have run into a problem. I am using DVD shrink and DVD43Free. I have backed up several movies already. What is happening now is the DVD shrink analizes the dvd then encodes it. Then the burning starts. However for some reason it takes the same amount of time to burn as normal. When I take the burnt dvd out and put it in my player it doesn't play. I remove the disc I can see the burnt line, it is only about a half inch from the center. Meaning the burning process is stopped or for some reason it is only burning part of the movies, yet it won't play anything back. I have wasted about 5 discs due to this. I have not changed discs and no changed any of the settings on the DVD shrink. It just started doing it. PLease if anyone has any idea of what is going on can they PLEASE help me. I back up alot of movies for my 4 yr old son to watch. I am using msonic discs I know they are cheap, but I never had a problem before. Also if some knows of a good program other than DVD shrink could they please tell me.. Thank You

A:Problems burning movies on DVD

Hope this helps?

I have been using DVD Shrink for some time now. What I do is that I create a backup using DVD Shrink and then I use a free DVD burning software that I found online. It is called Deepburner and it doesn't have many features but it can burn an iso image; http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download. Simply download the free version. Just create the backup as an .iso and then use the software. I don't see how the discs you are using are causing the problem. Good luck and hope this helps.

hi..

i was wondering how i am able to burn more shows onto a DVD..

i recently burnt three 350mb shows into a DVD which will be playable on a DVD player.. however, each show amounts to 1GB+ when burnt into the DVD and i'm only able to burn 3 of it into a DVD..
seems to be a waste of space..

i've seen that one DVD can hold up to 8 episodes.. how do i burn it that way?

A:Burning shows/movies into DVD

Its called compression. And the type you choose is determined on if your dvd player can play it.

Other methods is to chop up the video, which i don't think you'll want..

I recently purchased a firewire port and Ulead Video Studio 6 to go with my JVC DV camcorder. I also have Windows XP which has Movie Maker on it.
THis may be a dumb question, but do I need to purchase a DVD-RW drive if I want to burn my movies to play on my DVD player? I have a Panasonic DVD player, that says it supports Windows Movie Maker, so does that mean I can burn the video to a CD-R in the WIndows Movie Maker format and it will work?? I am just trying to find the cheapest solution possible so that I can have these home movies playable on a DVD player. I do not want to purchase more expensive items just to do home movies!!! Please help!!!!!!!

A:Burning Home Movies to DVD????

Good news. You do not need a DVD burner.

I assume your video files are in .mpg or .avi format on your computer. What you need to do is convert them to a format call Video CD or VCD. Most DVD players are capable of playing these types of disks.

HI
I've been trying to burn movies ( avi, divx) to cdr, preferably in Vcd, so that i can play then in a stand alone dvd player.
I've been using Nero v.5.5.6.4; and the movies play fine on the pc, but not the Dvd player ( which is vcd compatible).

I have a 4X burner , and the video encoding/burning can take up to 4hrs for a 70 minute movie excerpt. Is that normal?
Is there any way I can get a full movie ( average time 120min) on 1 cd/vcd.
I've been playing movies on pc using win media player, sometimes Alpha divx player. Some movies allow the option of changing video setting, while other don't. anything i can do?

I am using Windows XP, and have been using Nero Express 7 to burn movies, with no problem. I usually burn four movies as data to each DVD. However, occasionally I am told that all four movies have burned successfully, but when I put the DVD in my stand-alone DVD player, only two of the movies show up in the menu. There is no indication that the other two movies were ever burned.

I have tried 2 software programs, Cyberlink Power Director and also Roxio VideoWave 4. Both are easy to use and the DVD burns fine, but in the SP, LP or EP settings, my picture comes out blurry and unsteady. Only difference is I am not using an external disk but should not matter ?

It seems there are quite a few threads started with the same question: "How do I get video from my camcorder to my computer and burn it to a CD/DVD?". I thought it would be good to have this one thread to use and "stick it" so that people can just refer here. Also, the following is my experience and by no means exclusive. Feel free to add your own tips and build this thread into a nice resource. As the cost of DVD burners, digital camcorders, and hard drive space has come way down and the use of DVD players at home gone way up, putting home movies on DVD is something everyone is going to want to do eventually. And needless to say, Mulder has a ton of home movies to transfer to DVD!

You can skip all the detail here and go directly to "Quick Recap" if you are adventurous!

First, for those that do not know anything about getting video from your camcorder into your computer, there are primarily two ways to do it at least these are the two most common ways. If you have a digital camcorder, I would recommend only one way and that is to have a Firewire PCI card (you could also use a harware encoder and/or USB transfer), but I'll leave that for someone else to discuss).
*****************UPDATE --2-13-05************************

I wanted to update this thread because there is finally a product that does a good job encoding to MPEG--an external hardware encoder so this is the method I would recommend:

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop new in Italy in December 2009 from a major computer store. The computer came installed with Windows 7 Home Premium (Italian), and I have installed on it an original version of Microsoft Office XP 2003 Professional Edition (English). The CD-ROM unit is a Matsushita DVD+-RW UJ890.

Since I bought the computer I have sometimes had difficulty burning DVDs with the built-in Windows 7 burner function that I access from Explorer. Often in the past I have ended up with partially written DVDs. Nevertheless by using high-quality DVDs I have been able to burn DVDs successfully most of the time using the Windows 7 utility. I last used the utility successfully a couple of months ago when I burned a couple of DVDs to backup some photos.

Since yesterday I have been trying to backup my most important files onto DVDs. The attempt has failed in every case. First I copy about 3 GB of files from drive C: onto drive D: in Explorer. These are several hundred files divided into three different directories, consisting mostly of PDF, Word, Excel, and JPG files, some of them with names in foreign scripts like Cyrillic, Japanese, or Chinese. Then I insert a new DVD (either Verbatim or TDK) and attempt to master the DVD by selecting the option “write to disk” from the Explorer menu (whether from the menus at the top of the screen or by right-clicking on drive D: in the lefthand pane of the screen). A window pops up asking me for the name of the disk, whether I wan... Read more

It isn't even in any process. What can I do to make the drive stop?

A:Nero Burning ROM crashing caused perpetual burning from DVD Drive

Go to Task Manager...shut the system down from there.

Turn system off....hard shutdown if necessary...disconnect the optical drive.

Sounds to me like it's a hardware problem moreso than a software problem if you cannot manually open the drive.

Burning multiple sessions to a DVD-R disk is most likely the problem. (Ideally, you should be using an external hard drive to backup) You should use DVD-RW, rewritable, disks and just burn everything in one session, close the disk; then move onto next DVD-RW, burn everything, close disk. continue this until you are back to the original disk in a rotation, then erase the disk, and continue on.
As for why you cannot see data on the DVD-R disk, it's most likely because of the multiple sessions. On a DVD-R or +R disk you should burn once, and be done with it. You might be able to recover data with a 3rd party program, but since it's optical media my hopes are not high. Be sure to have the "show hidden files & folders" option ticked on so maybe, if the files are hidden on the DVD-R disk you might be able to see them.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I hope this helps you in the future.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

HDD: Seagate 1TB

Hi guys. I am not sure if the problem with my DVD burner is a software related one or a hardware related one. I am using HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS70 SCSI CdROM device. Of late, most of the times when I am trying to burn a disc, it shows Program Memory Area Update Failure. The errors are random. At times I can burn 2-3 discs before the error pops up. At times it happens during burning the first disc. The type of files I am burning also has no effect as the error occurred as I attempted to write various types of disc. I sed ImgBurn and Nero but the problem persisted. What is the problem and what do I need to do to solve this?
Thanks in advance.

I have a game in my pen drive that is splits second, my friend had given this pen drive to me, but windows explorer is showing that this drive is empty, i have checked it if it is hidden but still it's not showing after i had changed settings for hidden files, and i had checked the drive properties, it is showing that 3.07 GB free of 7.44 GB, please help me...

A:File folder is not showing in my pen drive, showing it is empty.

Hi,

The problem could be because all the data that was present inside the pen drive now have become system files by the virus. This is the reason why they are not visible even with the option “Show Hidden files and folders”.
To remove the problem this is what you need to do.
1. Go to Folder Options -> View tab
2. Make sure that your Show Hidden files and folders option is enabled.
3. Uncheck the option that reads “Hide protected operating system files (recommended)”

Now when you see your pen drive, you will find that your data is present there but in hidden form. There are 2 ways to unhide the data, either right click and uncheck the Hidden box or type in the following command in the command prompt
attrib filename –h –r –s
where filename is the complete location of the file.

Let me know if it solved your problem.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

Are there ways to rip copy protected DVD's with many chapters/episodes etc?
Which software allows me to do it? Is it legal?

There is no legal way to do that in the USA and discussing ways of doing so is against site rules.

Free in this instance might also be illegal! Free is not good particularly for the people who create and then have the fruits of their efforts stolen!
